Indigenous preschool [ BY BARRY GERDING ] Rutland may soon get an Urban Aboriginal Head Start Preschool, courtesy of a partnership between The Central Okanagan School District and the Metis Society.

A proposal for the program evolved from ongoing discussions around the need to build more culturally responsive transition practices for Indigenous families in the school district.

South Rutland Elementary was chosen this week as the preferred school. The Metis Society will need a capital grant to purchase a portable and have it placed on that school site.

Rutland was chosen as the ideal location due to accessibility and having the largest number of urban Aboriginal families within the school district communities.

RUTLAND WAS CHOSEN AS THE IDEAL LOCATION DUE TO ACCESSIBILITY AND HAVING THE LARGEST NUMBER OF URBAN ABORIGINAL FAMILIES The Aboriginal Head Start program was created in 1995 as a national community-based early intervention initiative, designed to deliver holistic programs to enhance spiritual, emotional, physical and social wellbeing among Indigenous children up to age six and their families.

The program targets three distinct Indigenous peoples’ groups—First Nations, Metis and Inuit—and has been established at 134 sites across Canada.

Former school board trustee Chris Gorman said there is still much work to do in working out the program delivery. What’s clear so far is where the school will be located.

[ BY CARLI BERRY ] Businesses are taking an interest in Reid’s Corner, according to the executive director of the Uptown Rutland Business Association.

Recently, a McDonald’s restaurant opened at the intersection at Highway 97 and Old Vernon Road and construction improvements, including construction of a new roundabout, continue along Old Vernon Road as part of the Highway 97 six-laning reconstruction.

“That is all developing… so that’s exciting,” said executive director Andrea D’Andrea said. “(The McDonald’s) is going to be more of an express, kind of like a Dominos (Pizza franchise).”

She expects McDonald’s will see a large influx of people on Saturday mornings due to Kelowna Auction World next door.

“They’re going to do extremely well especially with the auction being there as well.”

D’Andrea said Rutland has seen a five per cent increase of business over the past five years, but the business association doesn’t see a lot of commercial space to lease in the area.

According to the business association’s website, there are eight spaces available, mostly along Highway 33.

“We’ve got a few spots and I get calls on a regular basis for someone looking for space,” D’Andrea said, adding she’s recently received calls for cannabis shops inquiries now that recreational cannabis is

legal in Canada.

Typically, the number of businesses in Rutland will fluctuate over time, she said.

“Some businesses start in Rutland and move their businesses over to the Mission if their family moves there,” D’Andrea said.

D’Andrea believes Gray Road is an up and coming popular street.

Two Rutland men, Greg Greenough and Dale Martell, owners Valley Contract Screenprinting, are behind the growing phenomenon.

Six years ago, Greenough’s nephew was in Grade 11 and for his birthday, the duo made a Straight Outta Rutland shirt for him. The slogan paraphrased the title of U.S. hip-hop group N.W.A.’s song Straight Outta Compton.

“We just made it up as a joke… he thought it was kinda

Rutland cool, Straight Outta Compton, Straight Outta Rutland, that sort of thing,” said Greenough, who along with Martell grew up in the community. But the pair didn’t expect the brand to blow up like it did.

“Everyone at the school absolutely loved it. So we did up a couple for ourselves. A couple of weeks later we put them on our Facebook pages and everyone started commenting on them,” Greenough said.

The pair made around 50 shirts, and it took off from there. Straight Outta Rutland now has its own Facebook page and features pictures of Rutland residents wearing them on their travels around the world.

“We went from 50 likes to 2,000 likes in two days,” Greenough said. “We’ve got pictures of people in

Since their inception around 5,000 to 10,000 shirts have been printed, which Greenough said he never expected. The purchases have been steady as well, with peaks at Christmas season and in the summer months.

“Nobody really relates it to Compton,” said Greenough. “Everyone who buys it for Rutland is for Rutland pride.”

He said the majority of buyers are women aged 40 to 70, who buy the shirts for family members.

And he feels they remain popular because of community pride and because its Rutland-area residents enjoy sticking it to the rest of Kelowna.

been super proud of (their community) and we love the fact that everyone else in town doesn’t like us,” Greenough said.

While Rutland sometimes gets a bad reputation, he describes the area as “just the working class part of town.”

“If I had done Straight Outta the Mission, or Straight Outta Kelowna, I wouldn’t have sold 20 shirts,” he said.

“Everybody from outside of Rutland hates Rutland… every demographic. But every age group (in Rutland) loves the fact they’re from Rutland and nobody else likes us. We find it funny.”

Growing up in Rutland, Greenough said the area is no different than other parts of Kelowna.

“I played sports here all my life, and it’s no different (here)” he said.

THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY MAGIC ARRIVES ON DEC. 9 Rutland’s own Christmas Light Up is getting a boost this year.

Anyone can enter to win daily prizes during the 24 Days of Giveaways, the official tree light up Dec. 9 at 4:30 p.m. at Roxby Square. There will be a grand prize drawn on the same day as the light up that will include $150 in gift cards for local Rutland businesses.

The Kelowna Chiefs will then hold a scrimmage and songs will be sung by the Rutland Senior Secondary choir once the switch is flicked welcoming another year of Christmas in Rutland.

Later in the night the street will be brought to life with holiday spirit and on-lookers can decorate cookies, write letters to Santa and visit a Christmas Craft market at Plaza 33 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The family friendly, free evening will end with a special reading of ‘ Twas the Night Before Christmas

by Santa Claus himself.

Willow Park Church’s Living Nativity, a musical drama for all ages, called Through the Wardrobe will be taking place that same weekend from Dec. 7 until Dec. 9. The Living Nativity will also include a walk through Christmas scenes, hot drinks, cookies and a Bethlehem petting zoo.

The event takes place Dec. 9 from 3 to 7 p.m. with the Light Up scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

A local park is takING shape STUDENTS ARE DOING THE HEAVY LABOUR [ BY BARRY GERDING ] Students from three local schools have done the heavy lifting needed to construct the first trail for Black Mountain / sntsk‘il’ntən Regional Park.

The 1.95 km loop trail was completed Oct. 24 and is a catalyst to see the 640-hectare park, larger in size than Stanley Park in Vancouver, opened to the public by next spring.

Students from the Mount Boucherie Secondary School Academy of Indigenous Studies, Rutland Senior Secondary and École Dr. Knox Middle School are donating their time to see the trail project completed under the guidance of volunteers from the Friends of Black Mountain / sntsk‘il’ntən Society, regional parks staff and the Westbank First Nation.

The Black Mountain / sntsk‘il’nən Regional Park is the largest park in the Central Okanagan, at 140 hectares of property the regional district began acquiring in parcels dating back to 2014.

With the land acquisition in place, the RDCO looked for community support to see a management plan developed for the park to allow for public access.

Mountain / sntsk‘il’ntən Society, drawing on a volunteer pool of about 50 people between the society and the society’s associated hiking group.

“This has been a huge project for us to take on … The regional district doesn’t have the budget to finish the park. They can acquire the land but we have to do the rest,” said society member Ian Pooley.

The society also secured another $13,000 grant for a fencing project to protect the natural ponds that exist within the park site.

Pooley said the trail will serve two purposes: Provide access to the public of all ages and disabilities to walk a well constructed gravel trail and also to discourage people from walking on the grasslands which are in a state of rehabilitation.

“The landscape grasses have been degraded over time but creating this park will give the a chance to come back,” said Wayne Darlington, RDCO manager of park planning, capital projects and visitors services.

“This is an important area from a conservation perspective, the last natural grassland of its kind in the Central Okanagan and an important part of the wildlife corridor preservation project undertaken by the Okanagan Conservation Collaborative group.”

The corridor stretches from Kalamalka Lake to Naramata along eastern upper bench of the Okanagan Valley, considered important to preserve because climate change is pushing animals to migrate further north and along higher alpine elevations along the valley.

“This park land is critical to our being as humans in general, we need greenspace to connect with and protect us and the vital services it provides,” Darlington said.

Kyla Winnacott, a teacher at the Mount Boucherie Academy of Indigenous Studies, was one of the many volunteers who worked on the trail.

“They are working harder than probably any time in their lives so far, pushing wheelbarrows uphill and spreading gravel, but it brings them back to their cultural roots because of the importance these lands were to their people,” Winnacott said.

they can show their children years from now of what they did to preserve a significant cultural, historic and geographic landmark towering over the eastern boundary of Kelowna.

The property also has additional significance to the syilx/Okanagan people for its wide variety of animals, plants and medicines along with resources for tool making found in the area.

“It is service to yourself and the environment, but they also take from this years from now a respect they will feel for this place because they were a part of making it. If they respect it, their children will learn to respect it, and so will the people they know. I think that is huge,” she said.

Pooley added the park also has historical significance to long-time Kelowna residents as it was the location of the ski bowl in the 1950s, the predecessor to the Big White Ski Resort.

PROVINCE ANNOUNCES END OF $67 MILION PROJECT TO SIX-LANE 4.5 KILOMETRES OF THE BUSY HIGHWAY [ BY ALISTAIR WATERS ] The widening of Highway 97 at the north end of Kelowna is finally done.

The B.C Ministr y of Transportation recently announced the six-laning project between Highway 33 and Edwards Road is complete, making it easier for vehicles to travel through the area by both because of the road widening and the upgrading of several busy intersections.

The $67-million project was cost-shared between the province, the federal government and the City of Kelowna, with $18 million from Ottawa through its Building Canada Fund and close to $1 million from the City of Kelowna. The city also expanded the bus, rapid transit and cycling networks in the area to reduce traffic congestion.

Highway 97 widening complete “The widening project and intersection upgrades have enhanced our transportation infrastructure for the long-term and will reduce congestion and improve safety in this vital corridor,” said Colin Basran, mayor of Kelowna. “We’re ver y pleased to see this project complete.”

THESE UPGRADES SHOULD MAKE IT EASIER AND SAFER FOR PEOPLE TO MOVE THROUGH KELOWNA The stretch of Highway 97 sees approximately 40,000 vehicles a day, and according to the ministr y. Kelowna’s continued growth will mean that number will keep increasing, causing heavier traffic. The completion of this project is expected to help make travel times shorter.

The improvement work included expanding 4.5 kilometres of the highway to six lanes between Highway 33 and Edwards Road, an increase in high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes and intersection upgrades to Leathead, McCurdy, Findlay/Hollywood and Sexsmith roads. Crews also re-aligned Rutland Road with a new roundabout at Old Vernon Road for better traffic flow, along with other side-road improvements.

“These upgrades should make it easier and safer for people to move through Kelowna,” said Claire Trevena, B.C.’s Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “They also create a better connection from the downtown core to the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus and Kelowna Airport.”

ANNUAL FALL INVASION CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING CARD [ BY BARRY GERDING ] One of the events that continually draws crowds to Rutland’s Centenial Hall is Invasion Championship Wrestling, a fundraiser for families in need.

The annual wrestling card was held this fall, benefiting the Okanagan Boys’ and Girls’ Club, and Okanagan YMCA Strong Kids program, and the North Okanagan Neurological Association autism house in Vernon.

Rhonda Zakala, with the Okanagan YMCA, said since the wrestling events began in 2014, $30,000 has been raised for the Y, which has directly benefited 280 children living in poverty or low-income family situations to access Y membership services from recreation programs to after-school care.

“Those are dollars that are changing people’s lives,” said Zakala.

Mike Rizzo, the driving force behind the Invasion Championship Wrestling along with organizing partner Mike Chisholm, said hearing how kids benefit from the wrestling hi-jinks in the ring strikes a personal note of satisfaction for him.

“For me it’s about starting out at the grassroots level to try and help kids out, to be off the street and be active in sports or other activities,” said Rizzo.

“In my opinion, kids who have those experiences growing up learn to be more resourceful and be better members of society when they grow up. We want to do what we can to help all kids grow up to be productive adults.”

Since 2013, Invasion Wrestling has raised more than $200,000 for local charities.

The revenue is generated from ticket sales, concession stands and sponsorship support, as Rizzo says now the wrestling cards draw about 1,000 people between Kelowna and Vernon.

“Basically, from all the money we take in, we pay out for the hall rentals, insurance, pay the wrestlers and for their travel, all the money left over, the net proceeds, is donated to charity,” Rizzo said.

For Rizzo, the wrestling card takes on an added dimension since he is an active participant in the proceedings playing a bad guy character, something he has been doing for some 20 years.

“It’s about as much fun as you can imagine,”
