Katie & Trevor A RUSTIC FALL WEDDING Story By Keri Sculland Photos By Elora Braden Creative Studios
After living the ski town lifestyle for years in Golden, Katie Jewitt left town to pursue education in Calgary. While she was there, working on a research team, she met her future husband Trevor Hodder. The couple fell in love. They decided to make the move back to Golden together. Katie could work on her research, and Trevor works away as first mate on boat carrier ships. Now, Katie has a job in her field at the Golden Family Center, and the couple can enjoy skiing in the winter and other outdoor activities in the summer. They love Golden so much, and wanted to showcase everything it has to offer at their wedding. With Katie’s family coming from Saskatchewan and Trevor’s family from Newfoundland, they hosted both sides of the family at Hillside Lodge for the ceremony, dinner, and reception. Everyone stayed at the lodge for three days to get the most true Golden experience and get to know each other. 6 | GOLDEN WEDDINGS 2019
“I can’t say enough about how easy and how at home they make you feel,” she said. “Because our guests were coming from two different places in Canada, I really wanted to show off Golden and showcase what Golden is to us, and why and how it has nurtured our relationship. It was really important to us to have those three days at Hillside so everybody could become family.” The day went off perfectly with an outdoor ceremony, live music from local friends Kate Smyles and Chris Dusevic, and a nice sunny fall day. The celebrations later moved indoors for a dinner by Catering By Whitetooth and bar services by Good Libations. DJ Mihajic Touch set the tone for everyone to dance the night away. On the morning of, Katie and florist Anna Jean set up the tables and decorated the lodge with flowers and garlands of eucalyptus and rosemary. Going with the fall theme, beautiful oranges and greens topped the tables and complemented Katie’s bouquet.
Instead of cake, Katie baked pies, and some friends and family brought pies as well. “I wanted people to feel a connection around food and community around food... I think everybody liked it,” Katie said. After the wedding and ceremony, Trevor said to Katie that he wanted to do it all over again, because it was such a fun and special weekend for them. Now, they have settled their married life and continue to enjoy every day in Golden.

Dan & Hannah THEY DID IT THEIR WAY Story By Keri Sculland Photos By Jena Lee Photography
Dan Rose knew he was going to marry Hannah Feuz shortly after they met and began dating. Now, Dan and Hannah Rose have tied the knot, and they did it their way. Hannah, originally from Golden, has a lot of insight about off-the-beaten-path locations around her rural town. Dan, an avid fisher and boater, became familiar with the lakes in the surrounding area. Three Island Lake sits in a remote area south of Golden, and that’s where Dan and Hannah decided to invite a few of 8 | GOLDEN WEDDINGS 2019
their friends and have a small wedding ceremony. A few friends had gotten together the previous year on the largest island at the lake for a Thanksgiving weekend campout. They had such a great time, Dan and Hannah decided to surprise them the following year by having an impromptu wedding ceremony, while many of their friends would be with them. But, shortly before Thanksgiving weekend, it snowed. This foiled the couple’s plans to surprise their friends, and they had to let them in on the secret to ensure they would still come.
Clad in plaid and lace, Dan and Hannah held hands under a snowy backdrop and celebrated their wedding in the most Golden way possible. They took their trucks and boats up to the lake, and made their way across the crisp waters to Big Island, where they were to be married. After announcing their love to each other and being officially married, the small group had a fire on the island and had a short celebration. The wedding was small, and reflected Dan and Hannah’s natural and relaxed personalities. “It was quiet. It was perfect,” Dan said. “We did it just the way we wanted to do it.” Then, the newlywed couple boated back across the lake, and went to their friend’s house south of Golden for a reception and party. They bought all of the fireworks the Brisco General Store had, and set off a big show with their friends. The couple decided to keep the wedding really small and only have a handful of their friends to share the day with. Hannah comes from a big local family, and Dan’s family lives far away, so it made sense to them to keep it small. Although it snowed early and could have impacted their plans, the sun came out and Dan and Hannah had a wonderful day. They even got to bring their two dogs with them, who were happy to come along on a boat ride and explore the island.

ORGANIZING THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY OF YOUR LIVES REQUIRES A GOOD TEAM OF PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER TO COVER ALL OF THE BASES.
Setting the stage for the big day includes many different aspects like sussing out the perfect location that will provide the backdrop for the ceremony, dinner, or reception. Perhaps you’re looking at doing the ceremony here and the reception over there, or doing them both at the same location. Then, you’re looking at wedding commissioners, photographers, florists, caterers, live music, DJs, bartenders… The list can go on forever, depending on what you want. Planning for the wedding day begins months in advance, sometimes even longer. In Golden, there is a great number of services available, run by people who are comfortable working with each other, that will help your day go as flawlessly as possible. Catering by Whitetooth events coordinator Steph Boose knows it is important to work together to make the entire day as successful as possible. She has worked with party rental 10 | GOLDEN WEDDINGS 2019
companies, day-of coordinators, venue bookings, and all different people in different roles. Enjoying that beautiful meal on your wedding day begins months in advance. From menu choices to setting the tables, Catering by Whitetooth will cover all aspects of the meal. In the week leading up to the wedding, Steph will check in with the couples to make sure everything is ready to go, and put the final touches on anything that needs it. The day before, her and the Catering by Whitetooth team will go out to the venue to see what they’re dealing with, and the cooks will being chopping up vegetables and getting ready for the next day. The kitchen at Catering by Whitetooth is humble, and the cooks there have carefully honed their craft of producing big hot meals for whatever size of group they are catering. All of the food comes out freshly made and hot, and spends minimal time in transport to make it from the kitchen to your plate, as
quickly as possible. “It’s a lot of planning. Timing is everything,” Steph says. Services like Catering by Whitetooth work closely with the wedding planner and day-of coordinator, if the bride and groom have one. The planners and coordinators are in constant communications with all of the other services being used at the wedding as well. Having some mid-afternoon bubbly, wine with dinner, or extra elixirs into the evening wouldn’t be complete without a bar service. Good Libations is busy the day before the function purchasing the freshest fruit, getting it ready, and stocking up on mixes for the next day’s cocktails. They are also stocking up on ice, which can be tricky because of transport and storage, but is equally as important as the rest of the operations. Chances are by this point that they have been in touch with the bride and groom or their planners for a while now. On the day of the wedding, Good
Libations packs up everything they need to keep guests happy throughout the event. They pick up any last-minute requests, and head to the venue with two hours to set up before the bar opens. “We usually will have designed a signature cocktail for the event in honour of the couple,” says Mineko Spring. Good Libations offers different types of packages, depending on the needs of the bride and groom. They have also made beautiful sangrias, champagne bars (popping the corks as the “I do’s” are being said), Caesar bars with crazy garnishes, candy cocktail bars with Pop Rocks, whiskey tasting bars, and hot cocoa bars with fun toppings like marshmallows and cinnamon sticks. They also always have non alcoholic mocktails for those who don’t drink. From food to drink, caterers and bartending services will take the stress off your shoulders and ensure everyone enjoys their meals and beverages.

Tips for Outdoor Weddings in the Mountains ª Be warm
Mountain weather changes suddenly. You could look at the weather report every day leading up to the big day, and change what you’re going to wear 30 times, or you could prepare to bring layers that match your outfit and will keep you cozy. Especially in lodges and mountain-top nuptials, the air gets colder the higher up you are.
ª Take cover
Having shelter available in case of changing weather conditions is always a good idea. You never know if it is sunny in the morning, the weather might suddenly change to pouring rain, to snow, and right back to sunshine again. Plus, if you have adequate shelter, it can act as a shade tent in the summertime.
ª Dress to impress
Dressing warm is included here as well, but also think about the footwear you will sport during the ceremony and reception. Is this event outside? It could be rocky or grassy, and stiletto high heels don’t always agree with that type of terrain. Try to opt for something with a clunkier heel, or better yet, flat shoes that will be comfortable all day, no matter what.
ª Hydrate
If you and your guests are going to be outside for a long time, you might want extra refreshments. On a hot sunny day, ample water or juice like lemonade can make all the difference. Plus, those enjoying alcoholic drinks throughout the day and night will need the extra hydration. Having water or juice on hand can also encourage people to stay sober longer, and ensure they make it into the evening celebrations. Prevent dehydration in the summer heat and everyone will be a lot happier throughout the day.
ª Background noise
Everybody has gathered to celebrate one of your most important days, so make sure they can hear it too. Background noise can be caused by anything from wind, to cars, to rivers. Ensure that everyone can hear the important parts by looking for a speaker and microphone for the minister to use, and for you to use as well, if you want everyone to hear those vows. Setting up tents or understanding where the noise comes from can also help block out any distractions in the background.
ª Music
Maybe you have some live performers coming to play, or you’ve selected some music from a playlist, or brought a DJ to provide the backdrop to your celebrations. Whatever the case, these people will likely need a large enough area for all of their equipment, and shelter to fend off summer heat or rain and snow. night, ensure they are well taken care of so they can continue to provide great tunes the whole way through. Musicians and DJs will need a place to plug in, and you can sort that out ahead of time to make sure the beats are bumpin’.
ª Prepare guests
If you have people coming to your wedding from out of town, or from other parts of the world, make sure they know what to expect. Even if you’re an experienced mountaineer, they might not be. Prepare them by giving a list of items they should bring. Do you plan on hanging out by a lake in the summer? Guests will want to bring light clothing for the daytime, maybe a swim suit, and warm clothing for night. Temperatures in the mountains change quickly, so make them the most comfortable they can be by knowing what to expect. Getting married on the mountain top? Some people might not be aware in the change of temperature up top. Even if the weather network says it’s a hot sunny day in Golden, the air can be a lot cooler on top of a mountain, and even in the summertime, sometimes it snows or rains heavily, and wind can be a factor too.
ª Have back up plans
Leading up to the big day, maybe everything looks like it is going to go as planned. But, with changing weather patterns, it is always a good idea to have a back up plan. Does your venue have an alternative in case it starts to pour rain or dump snow unexpectedly? These are good questions to ask when planning your celebrations. Sometimes it can be easy enough to find a party tent rental just to ensure you have coverage in case the worst happens.
ª Permits
Check with the municipality about what you can and cannot do on public ground. Fireworks can be a really fun way to celebrate, but those definitely require a permit. If you’re hosting your event at a venue, they should know what is allowable. Consulting with a wedding planner and with the town can resolve any legal issues before they occur. The last thing you want is a fine, or any type of trouble on the big day.
ª Have fun
Weddings are meant to be a fun way of celebrating the love between two people, so make sure you have all of your bases covered so you can enjoy a stress-free day. Having everything lined up beforehand can make it go smoothly, but even when it doesn’t, remember not to stress. Enjoy this day for yourselves. Hiccups can happen along the way, and having someone else worry about them is a good way to focus on the celebration. Bridesmaids and best men are great people to use when something starts to go off track. If you have a day-of coordinator, that person can act as a great tool to resolve anything. Above all else, enjoy the day, and try to take everything in stride. Congratulations, and have fun with everything this mountainous area can provide.

Amanda & Jeremy WHERE TWO RIVERS MEET Story By Keri Sculland Photos By Kaihla Tonai
Amanda Roy and Jeremy Grey planned out their wedding celebrations to say their “I do’s” where the two rivers meet, and make their way from there to the pedestrian bridge in downtown Golden. The confluence of the Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers symbolized the love the two have for each other.
They really wanted to showcase to their friends and family all Golden has to offer, since they have become integral parts of the the community and it means so much to them. The couple met when Jeremy was living in Golden, and had opened up a store. He was speaking to Amanda’s mother, who had offered a lot of support
to his band. Amanda came riding her bike across picturesque Spirit Square, and he thought to himself, “wow.” As they got to know each other, Amanda and Jeremy soon fell in love, and the rest is history. Their wedding took place at Confluence Park, and they held their reception at the Riverhouse Tavern in Spirit Square.

They went with a wildflower theme, which worked out very well, because many of the ladies who came to the wedding had packed very similar dresses, totally unplanned. They built a teepee out of small logs at Confluence Park and adorned the top with eucalyptus from Mountainside Gardens. Amanda wore a eucalyptus crown, which matched her bouquet. At the reception, little succulents added a wild vibe from Mountain Meadows.
Riverhouse, which added to the whole vibe of the wedding, Jeremy said. “It made it feel like a wedding… The night before was showing rain, and we woke up in the morning and it was sunny, so it just became beautiful overnight,” Jeremy said. “The tent was there anyway, and then the fire ban lifted that night, so we were able to have a fire.”
“Our song was Wildflowers by Tom Petty, so it was very laid back that way,” Amanda said.
With many musician friends on the guest list, there was no shortage of talented music to fill the evening. Artists and friends gathered from the far reaches of the province to come out and celebrate with Amanda and Jeremy.
For the dinner, friends and family cooked a big harvest barbecue feast with veggie and meat burgers, corn, and salads. Leading up to the big day, the weather called for rain, so at the last minute, they got a tent to use at the

Lani and Timmy Middlemiss have known each other for a long time, and have been a couple for 10 years. It was important to Lani and Timmy to bring their friends together for a fun-filled evening celebrating their marriage, so they invited everyone to a camp out at the Eco Ranch, just south of Golden, and hosted their ceremony and reception there. Weddings should be fun, so Lani and Timmy did things a little bit differently to ease the stress and maximize the celebrations on their

big day. Since they have been together so long, they took their wedding photos in the morning to get rid of the down time in between ceremony and reception. Instead, the wedding just blended together, with a few family photos in between. The two were actually officially married on their deck at their house before the ceremony. They shared the private and personal experience at their home, but it didn’t really feel like they were married until they did it all again with their friends and family.
Their close friend Marc solemnized their marriage in front of the barn at the Eco Ranch. “The best part of the day was the ceremony. Marc did such a great job of it,” Lani said. “We didn’t really feel like we got married until we got married with all of our people.” Together, with their dog Mabel, Lani and Timmy worked to make their wedding as unique as they are. Timmy’s sister makes gorgeous hand made jackets, so Lani was able to wear a beautiful blue jacket over her dress to add a pop of colour and match Timmy’s blue attire. Both Timmy and Lani wore funky shoes, and mom made her a shawl. Her mother and God mother worked together to make a sash to go with Lani’s dress and outfit.

Because Timmy is a hang glider, a friend came up with the idea to fly little wooden planes in the air in place of confetti. Kids and adults had a great time catching the breeze with the little planes. Lani and Timmy also decided to hold their wedding at the Eco Ranch because that is the landing pad for hang gliders launching from Mount 7. After enjoying the nice weather outside, everyone headed in for dinner, presented by Catering Services by Paola Fedow, and drinks served by Good Libations. the Night Life
Work hard, play hard. Golden prides itself in its culture and night life. Whether you want to catch a quiet night of open mic, or attend a big DJ concert, there’s always different events going on around town. Weekly jam nights take place pretty much year-round at a couple different locations. Being located on the Trans-Canada Highway has its perks, bringing large acts into small venues, creating a really fun, up-close and personal time. In the summer and in the winter, Kicking Horse Culture hosts a multitude of world-renowned performers. The schedule is available at www.kickinghorseculture.ca.
The local pubs and bars bring in a variety of music from DJs to punk rock, and everything in between. We’re lucky here to always have something to look forward to, and we hope you will join us to share the experience. Good food and drinks are always easy to find in Golden. We have restaurants and pubs galore, all you have to do is decide what you’re craving. Pub grub, casual atmospheres, or fine dining are never far away in Golden. It is always best to call ahead for large groups, and most places are able to accommodate small and large group sizes, for whatever your occasion is.

When it’s warmer:
The weather is getting warmer, perhaps the snow has melted, and there’s fresh growth coming up all around us. White water rafting usually begins in the first few weeks of May, and it’s a wild ride first thing in the spring. The water is melting off of the mountain tops, and rushing down the Kicking Horse River, providing thrills for rafters seeking adventure. Some companies in town even offer stag and stagette parties, with options for thrill seekers or milder trips. Getting out on the water is always an exciting adventure in the spring. If white water rafting isn’t your thing, or if you’re looking for something a little more relaxing, some outfitters in town offer stand up paddle board rentals. You can go on a guided tour on the rivers, or check out the many lakes around. As the weather gets nicer, it might be time to shake out the sleeping bag and tent. With ample camping available, and being surrounded by four national parks, Golden is the perfect home base for your overnight wilderness excursion. Pick up your firewood at one of the many locations in town, grab the marshmallows, and head out into the woods. If you’re lucky, there might still be snow on Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. With rentals available up at the ski hill, it could be a fun idea to go out on the slopes for the day, hang out along the river in the afternoon, and retire to your tent in the evening. If roughing it isn’t your style, there are many hotels and motels available at affordable rates to keep you cozy indoors. There’s a multitude of activities in and around Golden throughout the spring, summer, and fall.
This could be the perfect time to get out on the greens and practice your golf swing, enjoy some refreshing beverages, and a nice lunch at the restaurant at the Golden Golf Club. Or, have a sociable time at the driving range, seeing how far you can hit the balls. For something a little more rip-roarin’, there are ATV tours that will take you up logging roads and to beautiful locations you might not have thought to get to. If you’re not afraid to get a little mud on the tires, these tours are available as soon as the snow has melted, and go until the snow in the fall. Getting more into the wild side of things, there are a number of activities that are fun for all ages and get you up close and personal to wildlife. You can hike with the wolves and become a part of the pack just west of Golden, down the Trans-Canada Highway, or meet the friendliest grizzly bear there is up on the mountain. On a regular day, visitors can follow Boo Bear around during tours, while he bathes in the pond and stands on his hind legs to give everyone a show, scratching his back on his favourite tree. Turning it up a notch, take to the sky for an adrenaline-filled day in the air. Companies in Golden offer paragliding from the top of Mount 7, which will take you out, soaring over the Valley and getting a birds-eye view of the entire area. Skilled and experienced gliders take you out on this wild adventure that is sure to impress. If you’re really itching for that adrenaline, hop in a plane or helicopter and jump out! Skydiving is available, and takes off on trips by appointment from the Golden Airport. Anytime you’re adventuring up a mountain, don’t forget to wear extra warm clothes. Even in the summer, the change in temperature can be surprising.
When it’s colder:
Frost is in the air, and you’re ready to get out and enjoy all the Rocky Mountains have to offer in their most glorious state: winter. Some people love the thought of beaches and patio drinks, but you’re more of a thrill seeker, enjoying cozy suites and outdoor activities that will keep you warm, no matter the weather. Well, you’re in luck. Golden is the epicentre of all things fun in the winter. Already known as a skiing town, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s technical slopes and deep powder live up to the reputation. Golden is an obvious choice for skiers and snowboarders alike who are looking for a good time up in the mountains. But we’re more than that. You don’t have to be a top athlete to have fun in Golden. Snowshoeing is a great leisurely activity that gets people out of the house and into the wilderness. With trails at the Golden Golf Club, Dawn Mountain, and all through Cedar Lakes, there are plenty of places to breathe in the crisp air, and bask in the glory of our mountains. For getting the heart rate going just a little more, cross country skiing is a popular and easily-accessible activity for the whole family. Rentals are available in town, and there are many trails around. From the top of the mountain at Dawn Mountain, to the Valley below at the Golden Golf Club, there are nicely groomed tracks to choose from. We just love activities on snow and ice, and we hope you do too. For more team-oriented experiences, take in a Golden Rockets hockey game. This Junior B team is sure to impress, with high-octane talent coming from all over B.C. and Alberta to compete against other teams in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League
(KIJHL). Home games are usually on Fridays or Saturdays, and the tickets are cheap. Or, try some team building with drop in at the curling rink, one of the most Canadian sports (after hockey). Everything is provided, and all you need to bring are clean sneakers, which makes this an easy activity for anyone who is visiting from out of town - it doesn’t even require special equipment. Just bring yourself, your team spirit, and have a good time. If you have your own pair of ice skates, check out public skating at the arena. The Town of Golden offers many times during the week to get out on the ice. The schedule is available on the Town’s website, www.golden.ca, along with all of the other programs offered. Maybe waiting in lift lines isn’t your thing. That’s totally cool, and heli skiing might be right up your alley. You’re guaranteed fresh tracks all the time when you get up into the air and skiing in remote areas. Get out to enjoy untouched terrain in a completely new experience. Multi-day trips are available to some of Golden’s most pristine backcountry spots, or you can just take a day or two, whatever you decide. Golden’s backcountry is one of the most gorgeous places to experience and enjoy. There are many popular snowmobiling spots around, and rentals available in town. Choose from places like Quartz Creek, Gorman Lake, Silent Pass, and more. Trails cater to first-time riders, extreme riders, and everything in between. So, there’s no excuse to stay indoors this winter, except after a nice day of playing in the snow. Then, cozy up to a warm fireplace, or decide where your adventure will lead next.
