Area west of white rock will be accessible to public, while East Beach work expected to continue until the end of April

Section of promenade to reopen Feb. 9 Alex Browne Staff reporter

White Rock’s promenade west of the white rock is scheduled to be reopened to the public by Feb. 9, according to a progress report on storm repairs delivered to council Monday.

But city engineer Jim Gordon noted that significant damage to East Beach from the Dec. 20 windstorm will delay the opening of that section of the promenade for several months more, and will also impact the appearance of the area.

“We removed 60 truck loads of logs from the beach,” he told council.

“The reason we did it is they make a mess of the beach, but they’re also a hazard.

“Some of those logs, during the storm, destroyed our picnic tables and went through the fence.”

Gordon described work remaining to be done on East Beach as “extensive,” with a completion date projected no sooner than April 30.

Amongst work still being done is raising the riprap – loose rock used to reinforce shorelines and other landscape features – in conjunction with completion of four pedestrian railway crossings started last year.

The idea is modelled on the measure now in

place in Vancouver, but unlike that city’s levy, which taxes vacant residential properties at one per cent of assessed value, the vacancy tax, proposed by Coun. Anthony Manning, would go even further.

The motion, unanimously endorsed by council at Monday night’s regular meeting, asks for a staff report on how such a tax could be implemented in the city.

Manning told council his suggestion of a five per cent levy is prompted by White Rock’s

Man alleged to have exposed self to girl, 10 Surrey RCMP are asking for the public’s help in identifying a male suspect in an alleged indecent exposure incident near Sullivan Heights Secondary School on Jan. 10. Police say a male suspect “was reported to have exposed his genitals” to a 10-yearold girl who was walking home from school.

Surrey RCMP received a report that a suspect grabbed the Suspect girl’s hoodie, “tossed her to the ground, and then exposed his genitalia.”

Police say the victim screamed and the suspect – described as Caucasian, possibly a teenager or in his early 20s, wearing a blue hoodie, grey sweatpants and black running shoes – fled.

The provincial government announced this week that it would be investing $1.25 million toward more than 150 new licensed child-care spaces in Surrey, including a dozen in South Surrey.

Five organizations – Creative Moments Child Care, Hope Valley Childcare Centre, Pebble Lane Early Learning, Satnam Education Society of British Columbia and Simply Kids Childcare Centre – are receiving the funding to help create 156 new licensed child-care spaces

at seven Surrey facilities, according to a news release from the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Of the new spaces, 90 are for infants and toddlers, 58 are for children aged 30 months to school age, two are preschool spaces and six are for school-aged children, the release states.

Four of the projects will expand existing locations, while three will create new child-care facilities, it adds.

South Surrey’s Pebble Lane, located in the 16000-block of 8 Avenue, is to receive $32,301 to expand an existing facility and create 12

spaces for infants and toddlers.

Simply Kids, in the 19700-block of 68 Avenue, is to receive $248,250 to create 37 spaces.

“Surrey is one of the fastest-growing cities in the province, and there are not enough child care spaces to keep up with demand,” said Katrina Chen, minister of state for child care.

Surrey-Whalley MLA Bruce Ralston said the investment is good for families and the local economy.

“Parents have been struggling to find quality, affordable child care for far too long, and that is especially true in Surrey,” Ralston said.

Stabbing suspect located A man wanted in connection with what Surrey RCMP described as a “targeted” stabbing in Newton last December was arrested in Alberta this week.

In a news release Thursday, police say the 21-year-old suspect was located and arrested in Edmonton on Wednesday (Jan. 30). The arrest was made the same day that a public appeal was issued for help in locating a suspect in a stabbing that occurred outside of a business in the 13400-block of 72 Avenue shortly after 5 p.m. on Dec. 13.

Police said the stabbing “resulted in serious injuries to a man in his 50s” and that the suspect fled the scene prior to police being called.

Monday, a charge of attempted murder was laid, and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for 21-year-old Anhad Virk.

Police Thursday thanked “an alert member of the community” for pointing them to the suspect’s whereabouts.

The release notes arrangements are being made to return the accused to Surrey for court proceedings.

Freezing temperatures, possible snow on way

The Lower Mainland has so far missed most of the frigid weather that has blasted parts of the country this winter, but Environment Canada says that is about to change.

The national forecaster is calling for freezing conditions starting as early as today (Friday) as an Arctic cold front moves in from the Interior.

“The Arctic air is going to be here for most of the next week,” meteorologist Matt MacDonald told Black Press Media.

Temperatures are anticipated to reach daytime highs around the freezing mark in Vancouver, and as low as -5 C in the Fraser Valley.

With the chill comes the potential for snow, but MacDonald said that depends on how a second system develops as it enters the region on Sunday.

“Most uncertain is how incoming moisture is going to interact with that Arctic air,” he explained.

Extreme weather shelters in Surrey are likely to be busy as temperatures are expected to drop several degrees below freezing in the coming days.

“It may only be a few flurries, or it could be more widespread snow, but it’s really too soon to tell.”

At higher elevations, Whistler is forecast to receive 15 centimetres Friday, followed by another five to 10 centimetres on Sunday.

Despite what has been a relatively mild winter, so far this season Surrey’s extreme weather shelters have opened more than 30 times, said the extreme weather response (EWR) co-ordinator for Surrey, White Rock and Delta.

Jonquil Hallgate said the extreme weather shelters have been called to open 32 days over the winter months.

EWR spaces, according to BC Housing, are available from Nov. 1 to March 31, although sometimes spaces can open prior to Nov. 1.

BC Housing said communities decide what weather conditions warrant an alert and how many spaces to open on a given night, depending on the capacity of existing shelters and the estimated need.

The most dangerous myth

T

hose who are battling a serious illness know they face the fight of their lives.

But in response to that recognition, their loved ones are most often moved to rally in support, lending their strength. They make sure that their loved one knows they are not alone in their fight.

That’s usually the case, at least.

January – Alzheimer’s Awareness Month – has come to a close, but the Alzheimer’s Society is hoping to people will keep victims of this particularly insidious disease top-of-mind yearround – not just during the first 31 days of the year – because the support of friends and family is often lacking.

Dementia of any kind, it seems, has a way of changing the dynamic. Alzheimer’s has the potential to rob a family of their loved one long before the person finally succumbs to the disease.

Memories begin to disappear, and there will come a time when it’s quite possible that the person you’ve known your entire life may not even remember who you are.

Parents can forget their children, and spouses can forget their partners. Unfortunately, these are the same aspects of the disease that can also aggravate the suffering of the person with dementia.

Loved ones sometimes rationalize there’s little use in visiting or interacting with an Alzheimer’s patient if that patient doesn’t know them. But according to those who have braved their way through the disease with a loved one, it’s also the most destructive myth about Alzheimer’s.

While it’s true that, in the later stages of the disease, the person you’ve loved may not be able to recognize you, it doesn’t mean the visits are useless. Those loved ones will have changed, but for periods of time, their suffering can be alleviated through even momentary flashes of memory, or even the feelings of connection they have with the person who visits.

Regular visits to Alzheimer’s patients enhance their lives and no matter how painful those visits may be for family and friends, they are the right thing to do. No one should be left to die alone.

Water is the drink of choice, not juice… and I certainly don’t see coffee in there, darn.

The food guide shows a plate half-full of fresh fruits and veggies, one-quarter filled with proteins and one-quarter whole grains.

At last, plant-protein proponents – a.k.a. vegans – are being included, as are the dairy lovers and all other cultures.

Traditional First Nation foods that are hunted, trapped, fished, harvested or cultivated are being encouraged as well.

Meat is still in this health guide, but the recommended portion is not exactly New-York-steak-size.

Going through the 62-page report, there isn’t any mention of supplements being recommended over food, only that newfangled fad diets pose nutritional risks.

The main message is eat fresh, and find joy in healthy eating.

That’s a lifestyle I can dig into.

Concrete city by the sea Editor: Over the holidays we had some friends visiting us from West Vancouver and we wanted to show off our beautiful city by the sea.

During a walk along Johnston Road our visitors were surprised by the huge size of concrete walkways, with very little atmosphere, resembling the sidewalks in Shanghai more than in a small cozy town like White Rock.

We drove to the water for a walk along the pier and looked for a parking spot, showing off the new parking facility on the corner of Vidal and Victoria.

This looks like a bunker during wartime, one of the visitors commented.

Standing in front of the building, it was hard to disagree.

Our walk to the pier, along or rather through another large area of concrete, gave rise to the question: “Is your mayor part owner of a concrete/cement making company?”

Well, we have a new mayor now.

But we have to live in the concrete city by the sea.

I never did write the poem I promised for her birthday so am hoping that getting these scarce words printed will honour her and remind those who knew her how special she was to all.

There are many Margarets who do this job daily, and they too often go unnoticed for their selfless acts and passion to keep us all connected.

It’s time to demolish pier Editor: White Rock’s pier should be demolished.

Sixty years ago, the pier was an official port of entry and there was a customs house and federal building across Marine Drive.

Regular trains would leave the station at the beach for downtown Vancouver; my mother would use them to go to Woodwards’ $1.49 day on Hastings Street. That station is now a museum.

Marine Drive used to be a healthy mix of grocery and hardware stores, banks and barbershops.

There was even a curling rink down there.

There was a park on the East Beach where music festivals used to happen – which has been fenced off for so long no one remembers. The string of failing and undistinguished restaurants did not exist.

In short, White Rock’s beach was a place with a reason for being, not the nowhere it is today.

Today, the mall people have fled across the freeway, and why would you eat on Marine Drive when you can be in Yaletown on the #351 in less than an hour?

The short bus to the beach never seems to run on schedule and ends service at 9 p.m.

So investing $15 million for a new pier seems like an exercise in nostalgia for the beach that used to be; it’s kind of like taxidermy for a dead poodle.

That money would be better invested in the developing urban village uptown; in new public parks and squares and fountains, bike racks and bus shelters.

That is where people are moving now, and where young people with disposable incomes will be spending their money.

It is time to let our beach return to nature.

No one goes there in February anymore.

The pier is not the cure for the beach’s issues, and there will never be adequate density and transit down there to support its ambitions, so it’s time to let it go.

Rest in peace, Margaret Editor: All those who met Margaret loved her. She was a brilliant master of building community, knowing many of the hundreds of children and adults that crossed her walk over a 10-year period.

She tracked everyone, even students who were not coming to school, telling their friends that there was a message for them to come to see her.

She was Scottish and grew up building community, and continued to do so. She often made meat pies and shortbread for friends. She passed away on Nov. 16, 2018 and many of us lost a dear friend and a caring human being.

There are fond memories of storms – her hat flying down 16 Avenue and groups of students chasing after it.

She would not miss a day of her duty as she had a passion and love for her job. Her dedication to keep her friends safe gave her an ongoing mission.

Lost parking damaging business Editor: Why does the city allow contractors to spread out construction material, equipment and shacks in parking spaces?

Marine Drive is a clear example of where the city has no concern as to the livelihood of the merchants, lost business, so the contractors can waste parking spots to store material.

Lack of parking means lost revenue for businesses,

whereas the contractors could take space elsewhere some distance away. No cost to the contractor as they just charge the city more for the project.

The same problem existed on Johnston Road during construction.

Lost parking meant nothing to the city, but the merchants suffered. Come on, city, think of where your bread and butter is coming from.

“If you’re going to move over, depending on your service, you’re going to lose it,” he said. “I wouldn’t go over.”

The Surrey Board of Trade this week staged two forums on contentious issues – the other one was ride hailing, which McCallum opposes in Surrey.

McCallum, who was at the big city mayors’ meeting in Ottawa with the prime minister earlier this week, wasn’t at either Surrey event.

Big marijuana producers struggle to meet demand for legal cannabis

Black History Month A Message from White Rock Mayor and Council Over 20 years ago, in December of 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. A former Surrey councillor is heading a new venture to bring people licensed to grow their own marijuana into a co-op to supply the legal cannabis market.

Barinder Rasode is CEO of the venture, a partnership with Grow Tech Labs (GTL) and Victory Square Technologies based in Vancouver. With supply shortages across the country since Canada legalized recreational cannabis last fall, the company hopes to step up to the national and international markets.

The B.C. Small Cannabis Producer and Processor Co-op is planning to incorporate under provincial cooperative legislation to “help maintain the province’s historic position as a global cannabis leader,” the company

Local chapter of Canadian Federation of University Women offering $10,000 award for post-graduate studies

A group of Peninsula women want to add a particular sparkle to 2019 for someone, as part of efforts to mark a milestone year and honour “a true lady.”

Joined by a desire to make a difference for other women, members of the Canadian Federation of University Women White Rock/Surrey plan to present a $10,000 bursary this spring to a woman pursuing post-graduate studies.

The “one-time” award is in celebration of the chapter’s 60th anniversary.

It also honours a longtime club member who died unexpectedly last fall.

Elizabeth Bordeaux, a founding member of the local chapter’s bursary program, was “a driving force in the organization,” said club vice-president Jenny Lindsay.

“Very passionate about what the club stood for and what we did.”

Bordeaux died in November at the age of 82. At the time, she had been a CFUW member for 54 years.

Lindsay said Tuesday that she credits her membership in the club to Bordeaux, who brought her to a meeting as a guest two years ago.

“I just started playing bridge with Elizabeth and she started talking to

me about the club,” Lindsay said.

“Now, I’m on the executive.”

Lindsay was the newest of three members of the local chapter to visit Peace Arch News Tuesday, but her years, combined with those logged

by Maureen Buchholz and Carolyn Oram, represent more than seven decades of devotion to the cause.

The CFUW is a non-partisan, self-funded organization that strives to ensure that all girls and women have equal opportunities and access to education in an environment where their human rights are respected.

The national body formed 100 years ago. Since the local club’s launch in 1959, more than $300,000 in bursaries has been awarded to students who have entered a post-secondary program. The first bursary was $100; for the past several years, the awards have each been valued at $3,000.

The $10,000 Jubilee Bursary, to be presented in May, is to go to a woman from the community who is in financial need and has a proven track record of impacting women’s lives through health care, community service, arts, science, technology, education, engineering, mathematics or law.

Jenny Lindsay, Maureen Buchholz and Carolyn Oram hope to raise awareness of the Canadian Federation of University Women’s club, which is celebrating 60 years this year. she knows firsthand the difference financial assistance can make when pursuing an education.

Her own education “50-some years ago” was funded by scholarships and bursaries, she said.

“I don’t remember the groups (that the money came from),” she said. “I know how much it meant.”

Lindsay, Buchholz and Oram are also hopeful that word of the milestone bursary award will help raise awareness of the club as a whole.

While membership is around 90, many people “either don’t know we exist or don’t understand what we stand for,” Lindsay said.

Thanks to Bordeaux, she said,“now I am seeing how the club is involved in the community supporting women.”

In addition to fundraising for bursaries and lobbying for women’s rights, the club promotes fellowship.

Special-interest groups and committees meet regularly, and include Dames who Dine, Club Cuisine, The

Bridgets-Afternoon Bridge, Stitch and Chat, Golf for Fun and more.

It’s “more than just lunch and movies,” Lindsay noted. “We do that, but there’s a little more substance.”

Oram – a member since 1974 – also co-ordinates a literacy program that sees volunteers work with students at H.T. Thrift and Peace Arch elementaries.

An interesting, but perhaps little-known, change in the organization that she, Buchholz and Lindsay hope will help boost membership is that, as of two years ago, there is no longer a requirement for prospective members to have a university degree.

“It used to be quite, not open,” Oram said of the long-held restriction. “Even if you had a degree, it was, ‘Oh, where’s it from?’”

For Lindsay, who trained in-house as a medical technician, the change opened up a door to involvement that she found “gives me a sense of selfworth.”

“I’m trying in my own little, tiny way to make a difference for women.”

A speaker series aimed at helping people learn more about Canadian democracy and engage with community leaders is set to return to Ocean Park Library Feb. 22, with an opportunity to hear from Surrey-White Rock MLA Tracy Redies.

The Cornerstone Community Forum is a monthly program launched this year by the newly formed Surrey-White Rock Political Engagement Society.

The society’s mission, according to a news release, is to spread knowledge of Canadian democracy, enhance Chinese Canadians’ support and participation in community politics and encourage Chinese Canadians to embrace and enhance Canadian multicultural identity.

The monthly forums aim to “help attendees engage with community leaders and learn

Master painter Mike Svob shares his expertise on camera

I

nternationally-known and respected South Surreybased landscape painter and instructor Mike Svob is poised to become a personality of the home screen, thanks to a new online video series that launches this month.

Called Create Paintings You Love with Mike Svob, the 17-part subscription series follows a free YouTube mini-course which will be available until Feb. 11.

With a 120-minute segment length – and professionally-lit, multiple-angle coverage – the course will give subscribing artists and aspiring painters a clear, upclose view of Svob’s techniques and process that would be impossible to duplicate in a public workshop, and on larger canvases than would be practicable in that setting.

It also offers subscribers the chance to pause and review the course, which can be accessed around the clock, allowing them to paint according to their own schedule.

But – as agreed during a recent conversation with White Rockbased wife-husband production team, Sylvie Peltier and Greg Nosaty, and Svob and his wife Nancy – the ultimate core of the course’s appeal is Svob himself.

An acknowledged master of colour, form and composition, he has long been in high demand for workshops from coast to coast, not only for his insights and wealth of experience, but also for his informal, story-telling style of instruction.

Part of that comes courtesy of Nosaty’s photographic eye and some 29 years of production expertise, but Peltier – herself a painter – also knew what she wanted.

She took Svob’s painting workshop in August 2017, and when she and Nosaty were contemplating branch-out projects using other media platforms early

last year she suggested Svob as an ideal subject.

“I felt it was exportable – his work was strong enough to be appreciated by people everywhere, and he attracts not only the beginner, but also the advanced painter,” she said.

“He truly is a master painter. I’ve watched him paint a lot – as I took his live workshop, as we filmed him for eight days, and, again, as we edited the course, and I never cease to admire him and his work.”

“You were able to capture the same feeling as a workshop,” Nancy Svob said.

Knowing what she wanted to see as a student helped determine what angles were chosen, Peltier said.

“I made the course I wanted to see.”

“That’s good because that’s the course I wanted to teach,” Svob said.

But the painter admitted he was a reluctant participant at first.

“It took them a while to convince me.

“When they first asked I said no, mostly because I’ve just got too much to do, and I’ve learned to say no over the course of my career.”

But, as his wife pointed out, the

suggestion to film the course came at a time when travelling to and from workshops across the country and internationally was becoming an increasing strain.

“An online course could fill some of that demand,” she said.

And Svob said he was also struck by the inconsistency of online painting demos to this point.

“They’re all little bits and bites – I haven’t seen anyone anywhere where they’ve put it all together.”

That’s one of the strengths of their book For Better, For Worse: Discovering the keys

to a lasting relationship (HIS Publishing Group), based on the Strengthening Marriage Workshop they conduct and the work Ed did in gaining a doctorate in ministry focused on Dr. Murray Bowen’s Family Systems Theory.

In 40 years of marriage, they have had plenty of time to make what they frankly

acknowledge as “painful mistakes” and gather humorous and embarrassing anecdotes they are willing to share to illuminate their points.

“Authentic, non-judgmental story-telling is one of the keys to healing of relationships, especially in marriage,” they write in their introduction to the book, published late last

year.

The couple recently relocated to South Surrey after 30 years in North Vancouver (where Ed was the Rector of St. Simon’s Church and Janice was its music director).

“They tried to script me, gave me cue cards and teleprompters,” he said, adding that what ultimately worked was sticking to the same conversational style he uses in live workshops.

Nosaty noted that properly marketing the course meant creating a YouTube channel and providing content for that, too.

“Sylvie said, ‘we’ll be done in a week’ and here it is a year later,” Svob said. “But I think it’s well done – way, way better than what you would get attending a workshop.”

“The only thing lacking is the interaction,” Nosaty said.

A five-day painting challenge Svob offered to artists on YouTube in early January has already given a strong indication of demand for the course.

“We had over 2,000 painters participating from Prince Edward Island to Kansas and from Penticton to Reykjavik,” Peltier said.

“The response was amazing,” said Nosaty.

“Seeing the paintings they were working on was really exciting – my expectations were low, but they were blown through the roof by the calibre of work.”

“Everybody is finding something in there to make them a better painter,” Peltier said.

A young Langley-based curling team – headed up by skip Tyler Tardi of Cloverdale and vice-skip Sterling Middleton – etched its name in the record book last weekend.

The duo won their third New Holland Canadian Junior title in a row – a feat never before accomplished.

“It’s unreal the fact that this has only been done twice before and how this is such a rare feat,” Tardi said of his accomplishment with Middleton. “It’s an incredible feeling and to be doing it with one of my best friends is extra special.”

The B.C. team is made up of Tardi (who plays out of the Langley Curling Centre), Middleton (the third who hails from Fort. St. John and curls out of New Westminster), Matthew Hall (second, who lives in Cloverdale but also plays out of the Langley rink) and Alex Horvath (the lead who plays out of Victoria). The coach is Tyler’s father, Paul.

Manitoba was the only team, who in the week leading up to the finals, was actually able to beat B.C. But Manitoba couldn’t do it a second time.

When it came to the gold-medal round Sunday at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert, Sask., Tardi and his team triumphed over J.T. Ryan’s Manitoba team by a score of 7-5.

Team BC opened the scoring in the second end with an angle raise takeout for three.

But Manitoba’s Ryan took control of the middle portion of the game. Ryan, vice-skip Jacques Gauthier (Tardi’s cousin), second Jordan Peters, lead Cole Chandler and coach John Lund scored two in the fourth and followed it with a steal of two in the fifth to lead by one point heading into the fifthend break.

“We’re no stranger to giving up threes early. If you’re going to give up a three you want to give it up in the second end. We know we’ve been resilient all week and we knew if we could string some shots together we could battle back, and that’s what we did,” Ryan said.

But B.C. took control in the latter part of the game with a deuce in the eighth and a steal of one in the ninth end to lead 6-5.

Manitoba had the hammer in the final end, but over-swept its final attempt, causing the stone to clip off another and give up a steal of one.

“They played unreal and we played one of our best games I’d say we ever played together, too. It just wasn’t enough. It was an inch here or there,” Ryan said.

Middleton said of his second’s reaction to winning the national title.

“That’s how we all felt on our first one and I’m really excited he was on the right side of that one this time, because there’s no worse feeling than losing a big game like that.”

The pair returned as part of the B.C. team in Shawinigan, Que., in 2018 and defeated Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan in the final. While all three victories were sweet, Tardi believes they all hold a part in his memory for distinct reasons.

“It’s hard to pinpoint one that’s most special,” he said.

Tyler Tardi and his team were back on the ice Tuesday – this time playing in the men’s provincials in Quesnel.

However, there were some familiar faces on the opposing team for Tardi’s first match.

In day one of competition, the Tardi brothers – Tyler and Jordan – went head-to-head.

In Tardi vs. Tardi (or Team Wenzek), Tyler beat his older brother by a score of 8-5.

The 2019 B.C. Men’s Curling Championship features a dozen teams vying for a chance to represent the province at the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier, which is to take place March 2-10 in Brandon, Man. The provincial championship men’s final is to take place 10 a.m., this Sunday, with the women’s final following on the same day at 2 p.m.

Both finals, as well as the men’s semifinal and the women’s 3-4 page game, will be livestreamed on cbcsports.ca and broadcast on Shaw Spotlight.

The White Rock Whalers added another ‘first’ to their inaugural season record book – this time as host – of the annual Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) top prospects game.

In front of 300 fans in Centennial Arena, the league’s best players were separated by their respective conferences, the Tom Shaw Conference and the Harold Brittain Conference.

With two-and-a-half minutes left, Brittain prospect Ryan Denney, from the Ridge Meadows Flames, streaked in on the left wing and roofed the puck for the gamewinner in a 5-4 win.

Another Brittain prospect, Mason Smith, from the Abbotsford Pilots, scored a hat trick.

For the Whalers, three players laced up for the Tom Shaw Conference. Defensive forward Saul Khalifa led the charge for the Shaw prospects.

“It’s really awesome to see all youth from [across] the league showcase their skill,” he said.

“Nice to see some familiar faces out there.”

Logan Shirley Johnson (nee Kay) July 28, 1930 - December 13, 2018 Shirley passed away peacefully at her care home in Surrey, BC. Shirley lived a long and full life in several locations, with many hobbies and interests. She was born in Chatham, Ontario to Hilda and Jack Kay. The family moved to Vancouver, BC where Shirley attended nursing school and met her first husband. The couple made their home in Portland, Oregon.

In 1979, Shirley moved to Seaside, Oregon where she worked as a nurse and then sold real estate, She enjoyed golf and traveling.

She was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, the Seaside Ambassadors and was instrumental in founding Seaside and All That Jazz, which she then organized each year until her move to Canada.

Shirley married Harold Logan in 1992 and they resided in Vancouver, BC before moving to White Rock, BC. They spent many winters at their home in Mexico. In White Rock she was active with the jazz festivals and the Kent Street Seniors, where she organized the annual talent show for several years.

Music was an important part of her life. She was very involved in the Jazz community and attended many festivals throughout the years.

She was an avid quilter, with a wonderful sense of colour, and also dabbled in other creative arts such as painting and jewelry making.

She is predeceased by her husband Harold Logan and is survived by her brother Douglas, his wife Jane, her children Karen, Eric, Victoria, Ross, Thomas and Rod, 12 grand children and 3 great grand children.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Harrison at Elim Village in Surrey for their kindness and care.

Al passed away peacefully on Sunday December 30, 2018 at the age of 90 surrounded by his family. Al was born and raised in Toronto and was the youngest of 8 children. He met the love of his life, Julia and soon after moved to her hometown of Montreal. In March 2014 they moved to White Rock, BC to be close to their children.

Al loved spending time with his family and was a big hockey fan. He followed his son’s hockey careers and travelled far and wide to attend most of their games. Al worked in real estate and the service industry for many years. Later in life he opened up his own restaurant named “Chez Julie�. Al was a great cook and loved to eat good food.

Al is survived by his wife of 68 years, Julia, his children, David (Emmanuelle), Larry (Sam) and Laura (Jim), his grandchildren, Lani (Matt), Tristan (Megumi), Jordan and Jasmine and his great grandchildren Kyana, Trinity and Mika.

He is also survived by his sister Marian and his many nephews and nieces. He was a great father and husband and will be sadly missed.
