THE BUTCHART GARDENS PHOTO

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! What are the “must-dos” on your holiday calendar? Chances are Victoria has them, and a whole lot more seasonal celebrations besides! Here’s a selection of our favourites ways to get festive... In a spectacle that’s a must-see for locals and visitors alike, the Butchart Gardens presents a magical canvas of thousands of twinkling lights shining over their beautiful 55-acre gardens. Can you spot the all the 12 Days of Christmas displays? In Downtown Victoria, head to the Bay Centre for all the sparkle of the Festival of Trees through January 7, in support of the Children’s Hospital. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet brings the magic of Nutcracker to the Royal Theatre November 30 to December 2, then Ballet Victoria keeps the Christmas spirit going with The Gift, December 28 to 30. Immerse yourself in a fun-filled winter wonderland with Tchaikovsky’s enchanting Nutcracker score performed by the incredible Victoria Symphony. Holiday music takes centre stage when Victoria tenor Ken Lavigne brings his holiday show Under the Mistletoe to the Royal Theatre December 4. Canada’s Tom Jackson also returns December 18, bringing the Huron Carol to Centennial United Church. This intimate evening of contemporary and signature Christmas music along with stories creatively crafted by Jackson is the last of 17 shows that travelled to 15 cities raising funds for local food banks and family service agencies. And for fans of Monty Python, Mr. Bean, and Dr. Seuss there’s Christmas with a comic twist. Grab your teacups – James and Jamesy bring a little holiday humour your way with O Christmas Tea, A British Comedy, at the Royal Theatre December 13 and 14.

Shall we dance? It’s the show Broadway fans have been waiting for: Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I.

Based on the 2015 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production, the touring show opens the 2019 musical season in Victoria, where it make its local premiere at The Royal Theatre January 2 to 6. Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. Key to the production’s longevity is a rich score that features such beloved classics as Getting To Know You, I Whistle a Happy Tune and Shall We Dance.

A SPARK for new theatre

Victoria’s Belfry Theatre celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Spark Festival with new performances, workshops and other related events.

Opening the festival is Mama’s Boy, a poignant story from local writer and performer Mike Delamont, who offers an intimate and beautiful performance told through stories and music. On stage March 8 and 9, Mama’s Boy is a true story about a young boy being raised by a single mother with a life-long struggle with alcohol addiction.

March 12 to 16 brings Good Morning, Viet Mom, written and performed by Franco Nguyen. Part stand-up comedy, part storytelling, part documentary film, award-winning comedianfilmmaker-writer Nguyen takes centre stage to share stories about growing up, living with mom, and a remarkable trip to Vietnam. Boasting accolades like “Bewitching” (Time Out New York) and “A thing of raw, unmisable beauty, (Herald Scotland) Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story comes to the Belfry’s festival stage March 19 to 23. This must-see show from Hannah Moscovitch, Ben Caplan and Christian Barry is a humourously dark folk tale woven together with a high-energy concert. This music-theatre hybrid, starring international Klezmer sensation Ben Caplan, is inspired by the true story of Moscovitch’s grandparents who came to Canada in 1908. Nominated for six Drama Desk Awards (New York) including Outstanding Musical, Old Stock explores how to love after being broken by the horrors of war ... and looking into the eyes of God. GO WILD FOR WILDLIFE One of the most anticipated photography exhibitions of the year returns to Victoria February 15 to March 24 when the Royal BC Museum hosts Wildlife Photography of the Year. Now in its 54th year, the exhibition is a chance to experience the wonders of nature through the lenses of award-winning photographers from around the world. Travelling from London’s Natural History Museum, this exhibition takes viewers on a visual journey around the world, bringing the talent and vision of each photographer closer to all who visit. The images evoke a wide range of emotions but are always visually stunning and thought-provoking – and definitely a family favourite.

Artistic season When the nights grow long, Victoria’s stars sparkle brighter.

Each winter the city celebrates its artistic season, when stage lights illuminate the stars of theatre, song and dance.

Bringing some of the world’s finest contemporary dance to the Capital city, Dance Victoria opens its 2018-19 season Nov. 16 and 17 with Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal’s Dance Me, a vibrant dance homage to poet and musician Leonard Cohen.

In what has become a holiday tradition for the city, Ballet Victoria returns to the Royal Theatre stage Dec. 28 to 30 with The Gift, a young girl’s Christmas adventure featuring magical dolls, a snow queen and a white dragon! Immerse yourself in a winter wonderland set against a musical backdrop of Tchaikovsky’s enchanting Nutcracker score, performed by the Victoria Symphony. Ballet Victoria bids farewell to winter with the firey Carmina Burana, at the Royal Theatre March 5 and 6. Carl Or’s epic choral masterpiece is one of the most popular musical works ever written. The poetic and dramatic texts will be sung by the 140-voice choir of the Victoria Chorale Society and played by musicians of the Victoria Symphony under the baton of maestro Brian Wismath, while the powerful musically driven choreography will leave you breathless. Come May, it’s time for something a little more 20

Modern music for the ages

PRIDE ON THE BLUE LINE IIHF Juniors bring world’s hockey stars to Victoria

Hockey Canada has hosted the IIHF World Junior Championship 12 times in the tournament’s 40-year history, most recently in 2017 in Montreal and Toronto.

The best of the best junior hockey players in the world arrive in Victoria this December as the city co-hosts with Vancouver the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships!

Victorians will get an early taste of the competition with two pre-tournament games December 19 and 21 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Here in Victoria, games will be played at the Save-OnFoods Memorial Centre, regular rink of the city’s WHL Victoria Royals. Vancouver games hit the ice at Rogers Arena, home to the Vancouver Canucks. A Boxing Day tradition for many Canadian families, opening games of the 43rd edition of the international tournament take place December 26, with play continuing to January 5.

Hockey fans are in for some thrilling on-ice action as Victoria hosts Group B – Sweden, USA, Finland, Slovakia and Kazakhstan. In Vancouver, Group A includes Canada, Russia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Denmark. THE ESSENTIAL CITY NEIGHBOURHOODS

INNER HARBOUR / DOWNTOWN The Inner Harbour is the most often photographed and most easily recognized place in Victoria, and home to several renowned landmarks, including the Legislative Buildings and The Fairmont Empress Hotel. Nearby, Bastion Square is the site of the original Fort Victoria and currently home to shops, restaurants and services. Other downtown attractions include the Royal BC Museum, the National Geographic IMAX Theatre, The Bateman Centre and the Victoria Bug Zoo. Shoppers will love Government Street, LoJo (lower Johnson Street), Fort Street and the Bay Centre. Take in views of the Inner Harbour with a stroll along the pedestrian walkway beginning near Belleville and Menzies streets and following the waterfront over the blue Johnson Street Bridge into neighbouring Vic West and Esquimalt. NEIGHBOURHOODS NEAR DOWNTOWN Several picturesque, historic neighbourhoods surround downtown and

are within easy walking distance. Just south of downtown, James Bay is Victoria’s oldest residential neighbourhood, bordered by water on three sides and Beacon Hill Park on the fourth. Beacon Hill has been Victoria’s best-loved green space since the 1850s, with pathways, gardens and a seasonal children’s petting zoo. On the east side of the park is Fairfield, a residential neighbourhood with a trendy collection of shops and cafés called Cook Street Village. East of downtown, Rockland is a prestigious area of older, stately homes; attractions include Craigdarroch Castle, Government House Gardens and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Northwest of downtown, over the Johnson Street Bridge, Esquimalt is home to CFB Esquimalt, beautiful Saxe Point Park and CFB Esquimalt’s museum. OAK BAY This charming area of Tudor-styled homes, oak trees and manicured gardens is a few minutes' drive from downtown. Oak Bay Village and the Avenue are the main shopping areas

with excellent shops and galleries, featuring antiques, art, gifts, china, fashion and jewellery. Dining options range from English-style pubs and afternoon tea houses to modern bistros and beautiful waterfront dining rooms, including the Marina Restaurant and the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. SAANICH AND CORDOVA BAY Saanich is a large residential area beginning north of downtown. Highlights include Mt. Douglas Park, with hiking trails and panoramic views, Elk/Beaver Lake Park, a great spot for watersports, walking and fishing, the gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, Swan Lake/Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary. Just east of Elk/Beaver Lake Park is the seaside neighbourhood of Cordova Bay, valued for its rural beauty and unparalleled views of Haro Strait and the San Juan Islands.
