Best Jest is a hilarious comedy about family From January 25 through February 9, Gallery 7 Theatre’s live stage presentation of Beau Jest runs at the Abbotsford Community Arts Addition. “This play is a real charmer,” said Ken Hildebrandt,

Gallery 7 Theatre’s Executive/Artistic Director. “Though set in the early 80s, it explores family dynamics in a real and hilarious way that transcends the decades since the play was written.”

Sarah Goldman has a problem: her parents want her to marry a Jewish man and her boyfriend is not Jewish. Rather than tell the truth, she tells her parents she’s dating a Jewish doctor. Of course they insist on meeting him. Amidst protests from her boyfriend, Sarah hires an actor to play the role of her doctor boyfriend at a family dinner. Hilarity ensues as she attempts to keep the charade going as long as possible. “Beau Jest is lovely fun and an endearing story about family relationships, growing up and what it means to live your life independently from your parents while still respecting them,” said Hildebrandt. Mikayla Wust plays the role of Sarah Goldman. A recent BFA graduate from Trinity Western University, she has appeared in productions of The Cover of Life and The Diary of Anne Frank. Thomas Smith, a graduate of the UFV theatre program and frequent Gallery 7 Theatre performer, plays the doctor boyfriend in Beau Jest. James Lam plays Sarah’s actual boyfriend, Brady Moore plays Sarah’s brother and Sue Backs and Andrew Abrahams play Sarah’s parents. Written by James Sherman, Gallery 7 Theatre’s Beau Jest is directed by Jessica Garden. This

production will be presented on a three-quarter stage with the audience surrounding it, creating an intimate theatre experience. “Beau Jest will warm hearts, tickle the funny bone and inspire some healthy conversation about family and being more secure in who you are,” said Hildebrandt. “It’s the perfect tonic to those post-holiday blues and a beacon of light during those long winter nights.” From January 25 through February 9, Gallery 7 Theatre continues its Back to Classics theatre season with the hilarious and charming Beau Jest at the Abbotsford Community Arts Addition, located at 2329 Crescent Way. Tickets for matinee and evening performances are available online at gallery7theatre. com or in person at House of James. This play is suitable for ages 10 and up. Other shows in the 2018-2019 season include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (March 2019) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (May 2019).

Taco Fiesta Potato Crisps This recipe is made up of 3 parts: the lentil walnut taco mix on top of a roasted potato slice, topped with cashew cream. To Serve: Top each potato slice with 1 tsp. of the cashew sour cream, followed by about 1 tsp. each of the walnut lentil taco meat, salsa, and green onions, in that order. Garnish with pepper. Serve immediately, while still warm. LenTiL WaLnuT TaCo Mix • 1/2 cup chopped walnut pieces • 3/4 cup uncooked brown lentils (or 1 can lentils, drained and rinsed) • 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil • 1/4 cup chopped onion • 1 tsp dried oregano • 1 Tbsp ground cumin • 1 Tbsp chili powder • 1/2 tsp salt (optional if using canned lentils) EASY: Substitute 2 Tbsp. Triple Smoke Tex Mex seasoning for oregano, cumin, chili powder and salt • 3 Tbsp salsa (or vegetable broth, or water) inSTruCTionS If using dried lentils, rinse lentils then add to a medium sauce pot and cover with water by 2”. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 25 min. until tender. Drain and set aside. Heat a large skillet over med. heat and add the walnuts. Toast for 2 minutes, stirring often until walnuts are lightly browned and fragrant, taking care not to burn. Place the walnuts in a small bowl and set aside. Add the oil to the same skillet along with the onion and spices. Cook for 5-6 minutes until onions are reduced and translucent but not browned. Add the cooked (or canned, drained and rinsed) lentils and walnut mixture along with the salsa or broth and cook another 2-3 minutes, gently mashing some

of the lentils with the back of your spoon/spatula. You can also use a potato masher to mash ingredients. Or, if you have a food processor, pulse the walnuts first to chop, add rest of ingredients and pulse a few times until mixture is crumbly, resembling taco meat. Put mixed ingredients back into the skillet and rewarm over low heat. Season to taste, adding more salt/spice as needed. roaSTed PoTaTo SLiCeS • 2 russet potatoes, unpeeled, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds- use a mandoline if you have one • 1 tbsp. grapeseed or olive oil • sea salt and freshly ground pepper Preheat the oven to 425 F. Place the potato slices on a rimmed baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Rub the potatoes to disperse the oil evenly. Place potatoes in an even layer, and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Roast the potatoes for 30-35 min., flipping them once halfway through, until tender and lightly browned. Allow the potatoes to cool for 5 min. before assembling. CaSheW Sour CreaM • 1 cup raw cashews • 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar • 1/2 tsp sea salt, or to taste In a bowl, combine the raw cashews and enough water to cover them and soak for 8 hours or overnight. For a quick-soak method, put the cashews in a bowl, pour boiling water over them until the cashews are covered, and soak for 2 hours. Drain and rinse the cashews and transfer them to a blender. Add the lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, and salt and blend on high speed until very smooth.

A trigger point is an area in the muscle that is hyperirritable and when pressed, causes pain to refer to another area of the body. Our muscles are made up of many bands of fibers that help the muscles stay strong and elastic. Repetitious movement or prolonged strain can cause muscle fibers to stick together. If your muscle gets shortened by a knot or trigger point, it affects how that muscle works and the performance of other muscles. When you are running, your legs move your body, your legs are connected to your hips, and your hips are connected to your lower back. If you have a muscle in your hip that has to work harder than the other muscles, it gets tired and

that creates tension in the muscle. As that trigger point develops, it can cause local pain, and as it interacts with other muscles, it can cause pain to travel down the leg or up the back, resulting in Sciatic Nerve Syndrome. The best way to get rid of the pain is to release the trigger point. Massage therapy, acupuncture, and chiropractic are most effective. For chronic trigger points, injections like saline and B12 can speed up the healing. Once your trigger point has been treated, stretches and exercises can help prevent this area of the body from getting tight again. Submitted by Dr. Chris Vallee, DrTCM

HOME LIFE

Must-haves for an amazing kitchen reno Kitchen remodels are among the most popular home renovation projects, whether they consist of swapping out cabinet hardware or doing major demolition. Due to the sheer amount of time families spend in the kitchen, not to mention the number of tasks performed in this space, it is easy to see why Remodeling magazine consistently ranks kitchen renovations as projects that will enable homeowners to recoup a high percentage of their investments. In the magazine’s 2018 “Cost vs. Value” report, midrange major kitchen remodels costing an average of $63,829 recouped 59

percent of that investment. When investing in a kitchen project, it is important to incorporate items that are coveted. • Deep, double sinks: Having a double sink enables you to soak dishes in one side and then wash on the other. It also makes it easy to wash and prep produce for meals. • Kitchen island and bar stools: Even though many meals are enjoyed around the table, there’s something to be said for the convenience of a kitchen island and some well-placed bar stools for quick breakfasts or snacks. • Smart kitchen storage: Work with a contractor to include storage solutions

built into cabinetry and the pantry. Slide-out shelving, nooks for a paper towel roll and custom-designed areas to store stand mixers and other necessities can make kitchens more functional. • Outdoor access: If possible, design a kitchen so it is easy to access the backyard via sliding doors. This can make outdoor entertaining or even coffee on the deck much easier. • Under-cabinet lighting: Fixtures installed under cabinets provide both ambient lighting and task lighting. Such lighting makes it easier to see what you’re working on as well, as even well-placed overhead lighting can fail to illuminate dark corners

and spots on the counters. • Convenient warming drawer: This appliance provides backup to the oven. It’s a slide-out drawer that can keep prepared foods out of the way and warm until they are ready to be served. This is particularly handy for holidays and other entertaining. • Beverage station: Designate one area of the kitchen to beverages, such as coffee and tea. Or make the area an informal bar. This can limit traffic in the kitchen to a single area. Kitchen remodels are exciting to envision, and several choices can make these high-traffic spaces even more coveted.
