Wrap it up!

Yes, it’s time to almost wrap up 2018 and look forward to 2019. It’s hard to believe a full year has passed. It feels like just yesterday we came out with the inaugural edition of West Shore Family and now we are on issue number 5!

But wait, not so fast there’s plenty to accomplish this holiday season, as any experienced parent knows.

Yes, it’s time for gift giving, family visits and entertaining.

For children the holidays are a lot about getting. As parents it’s important to balance all the getting overload with some valued family time.

While it might be hard to convince a 5 or 10 year old that giving is better than getting, you can help them experience the joy of giving by participating in some of the family activities we bring to your attention in our feature, like the IEOA Truck light Convoy coming

to town on December 1st (tomorrow). A truck light convoy like no other, where the main purpose is the food drive. Simply by taking the kids to Westshore Town Centre to donate a gift to CFAX Santa’s Anonymous teaches them about giving.

Traditions are certainly what the holidays are all about, and I’m sure every family has them. Our family tradition

is to celebrate around the woodstove with a glass of wine, or a beer while hanging out with our dad in his garage on Christmas Eve. Not much of a tradition but after 20 years, that’s what we’ll call it. The love that fills the shop that evening makes it a tradition I never want to miss and memories to last a lifetime.

Here’s hoping you enjoy your holiday season, and traditions.

Trucks covered in thousands of multi-coloured Christmas lights and decorations will dazzle residents young and old throughout Greater Victoria next month.

As part of the 20th annual Island Equipment Owners Association’s Truck Light Convoy, which kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 1, roughly 80 truck will begin at Ogden Point at 5:45 p.m. and, with the help of a police escort, wind through Victoria, Colwood and Langford, before ending at Western Speedway at around 8:30 p.m.

The trucks then park and the public is invited to enjoy a hot dog, hot chocolate and see the trucks up close.

New this year, residents will be able to track the convoy’s progress online.

The Q radio station will also be giving updates on how close the convoy is to your area.

“I just get tingles. It’s just such an amazing cause, it’s just such an amazing event,” association manager Wendy Watt said. “The hours that the truck drivers and all the equipment owners put in to do this is just amazing and it’s all just out of the generosity of their own heart … it takes hours and thousands of lights.”

This year’s production, Keeping PACE With Christmas! features more than 300 local kindergarten to Grade 12 students determined to serve up a heaping helping of holiday cheer for people of all ages.

“This show works for the whole family,” said Sandy Webster-Worthy, artistic director for the PACE Musical Theatre Academy.“Everyone’s been working hard to put together a real crowd pleaser, and there is something for everyone.

It’s a fast-paced musical revue that overs a huge range of Christmas music.”

The audience is encouraged to sing along with the cast during a medley of tunes that includes traditional carols like Silent Night, First Noel, Come All ye Faithful and Christmas Hallelujah. More modern favourites such as Grandma’s Killer Fruitcake, 2-Step Round the Christmas Tree and Aussie Jingle Bells should get the toes tapping, Webster-Worthy added. Silver Bells, I’ll Be Home For Christmas and Winter Wonderland are also sure to encourage participation.“Watching the five-year-old performers clutching teddy bears and singing Little Toy Trains

with the Grad 12 cast is sure to elicit tears and smiles, she added.

This year’s show also features musical sets from the popular Broadway shows Buddy the Elf and A Christmas Story.

The shows take place at the Isabelle Reader Theatre at 1026 Goldstream Ave. on Wednesday, Dec. 5, Friday, Dec. 7, and Saturday Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. There are also matinee performances Saturday, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.

Here is a ‘Dattle Brott’ (Date Bread) recipe that my wonderful Mother ‘Nana’ used to make every Christmas.

Ingredients: 150 grams cottage cheese 6 Tbsp milk 6 Tbsp oil 75 grams sugar 300 grams flour Vanilla 1 Tbsp baking soda Directions: Mix/kneed all the above together and roll out on a floured surface, Brush with milk and add 250 grams chopped dates. Roll yo kike a jellyroll and place into a prepared loaf pan.

Brush the top with egg/milk mixture and score the top with a knife. I forgot the temp and time, but assuming 350 till...done or brown on top. With the same dough she also filled it with an almond nut filling. Enjoy!

This Christmas Give Your Family the Gift of Peace Lori Frank The amount of pressure we put on Christmas to provide us with a picture perfect family moment is crazy! It’s as if we expect all of our family relationships to suddenly transform into the stuff that holiday movies are made of.

Although Christmas can seem magical you’re setting yourself up for disappointment to expect more from family gatherings than reality can deliver. So this Christmas, why not adjust your expectations? You’ll be surprised by the peace it can bring.

Don’t worry about everyone else’s good time – The only person you can control is you. You are not personally responsible for meeting everyone’s holiday expectations. So if Grandpa is sitting in the corner with complaints about dinner, let it go. You may even find the less attention you pay him the less complaining there is.

Figure out what really matters to you – We often feel torn to attend every party and truck the kids all over the countryside visiting everyone in an attempt to keep everyone else happy. Sit down with your partner or if you’re separated sit down your kids and figure out what

matters to you. What events and activities will make you and your kids happy? And if the answer is sitting at home watching Christmas movies, that’s okay.

Start your own traditions – If you are newly separated or divorced Christmas can feel like a sad time as you grieve the loss of an ideal Christmas season. To combat that feeling start your own new traditions. Involve your kids, they probably have lots of great ideas and it will help them in their grief as well.

You don’t have to do it all – Everything doesn’t need to fall on your shoulders. But you need to speak up and let others know what you would like them to do. They can’t read your mind.

Pre-plan your holiday schedule – Whether you are with your partner or not it’s helpful to plan out the Christmas schedule. Laying it all out on the calendar will help you determine if you have too much scheduled and where scheduling conflicts lie. Have these conversations with your partner or ex ahead of time so you can work out what will work best for your kids and your sanity.

Gift giving is not a competitive sport – The

joy you feel when your child opens the latest and greatest gift on Christmas morning will be short-lived when the January bills roll in. Don’t feel pressure to spend more than you can afford in an attempt to keep up with the Joneses. Trust me, the Joneses probably can’t keep up with their spending habits either. If you are divorced, have a conversation with your ex about setting a gift budget at each home. Trying to outdo one another with expensive gifts is all about you and is not in the best interest of your kids.

Holiday time is not therapy time – No family is perfect. During the holidays conflict you’ve been ignoring can come to a head or seem amplified.

Arguments and negativity are not the memories you want to give your children.

That doesn’t mean ignoring problems. Acknowledge them and make a plan to address them after the holidays are over. Perhaps your New Year’s resolution will be to not be dealing with the same conflicts next Christmas.

CHOCOLATE CARAMEL PRETZEL BITES • 24 pretzels •12 caramel squares, unwrapped, cut in half •3/4 cup semi-sweet or milk chocolate, melted with 1 tsp coconut oil • Christmas sprinkles Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Layer all pretzels on the sheet. Place half of caramel squares on each pretzel.

Bake in the oven for 6 to 7 minutes. The caramel will be melty but not completely filing the holes of pretzels. It will spread as it cools. Cool pretzels completely before dipping in chocolate.

When cool, dip pretzels in chocolate (cover whole pretzels or dip halves). Tap against the bowl with chocolate to help excess drip off back to the bowl.

Place back on the sheet. Add sprinkles. Let cool completely.

Store in air tight container.

VICTORIAN MINCE MEAT Because, Victoria!

Ingredients: 450g/1lb sirloin steak, finely chopped 450g/1lb suet, grated 4 large apples, peeled, core removed, flesh chopped 1.35kg/3lb currants ½ small loaf day-old bread, grated Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste Ground cinnamon, to taste Ground cloves, to taste Ground ginger, to taste Salt and freshly ground black pepper 450g/1lb sugar 2 lemons, zest and juice 3 large oranges, juice only Candied peel, diced (optional) 250ml/9fl oz brandy 250ml/9fl oz ruby port Mix all of the mincemeat ingredients together in a large bowl, using your hands, until well combined.

Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and heat over a very low heat for 3-5 hours, stirring occasionally, or until it has reduced to a thick, dark paste.

CRACKER TOFFEE

(A.K.A. PECAN CHRISTMAS CRACK)

Good luck trying to stop munching after your first bite!

Ingredients 54 Ritz Crackers (or saltines) 1 cup butter 1 cup dark brown sugar 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup chopped pecans Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line an 11x17 pan with foil and grease the foil well. Line with crackers.

In a medium saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar and stir to mix. Bring to a boil over medium heat and let come to a rolling boil for 3 minutes. Once the mixture comes to a boil, DO NOT STIR. (Your toffee should reach 270-290 degrees if using a candy thermometer) Pour brown sugar mixture over the crackers. Bake 4 minutes. Turn the oven off.

Remove from the oven and wait 1 minute. Pour chocolate chips over the top and let sit 4 minutes or until chocolate is soft (or place 1 minute in the warm oven). Spread chocolate evenly and sprinkle pecans on top.

Cool on the counter slightly and then place into the freezer to cool completely. Break into pieces.

Three fun crafts to keep kids busy Birdseed Ornaments The trick with these is using a gelatin to hold everything together. Here’s the recipe we use, though you can definitely make modifications or bigger batches as you see fit.

SUPPLIES 1/2 cup water 3 tsp unflavored gelatin 3 Tbl corn syrup 3/4 cup flour 4 cups bird seed Directions Heat water, gelatin and corn syrup together over a low heat. No need to boil. Mix flour and seed together and then slowly add to gelatin mixture.

While cooling, put out parchment paper on our counter, and choose your favorite cookie cutters. Spray those cookie cutters with cooking spray. Next, fill the cutters with the gelatin mixture, pressing in the mixture tightly. Before you remove the ornament, use a straw or toothpick to poke a hole through the ornament (for hanging). Then remove from cookie cutters and let dry for several hours. Once dry, you can attach ribbon or string and hang for the birds!

Directions Pour your glue into a cup, add the tbsp. of water, food coloring and glitter and mix well with the craft stick. Add liquid starch. Keep stirring and it will start to form. Then take out of the cup and begin kneading.

If the slime is too sticky, add a little bit of starch at a time (about 1 tsp or less).

Store in sealed container that has no air.

If your slime is exposed to air too long, it dries out.

Wrap the mason jar in blue felt, and glue together.

Stack the pieces and you already have the gnome shape — all you have to add are the details! You could also glue the foam cone to the lid of the jar to have a way to seal it.

Decorate by hot glueing on felt faces, beards, feet and a washi tape belt. Use the sharpie to draw a cute face and you have a gnome to love!

Express ourselves in a way others can hear Sometimes, when we are emotionally triggered, we let our inner drama kings and queens run rampant. While it may be momentarily satisfying to let off a zinger at someone, it almost always damages the relationship. If someone feels attacked by a statement, they may get defensive and emotional and will not be able to hear clearly.

Learn to speak assertively—that is, with respect for both ourselves and the other person, and without trying to make them feel ashamed or guilty.

Make allies of our conflict partners If a long simmering conflict has erupted, recognize that we can only control ourselves, try to remain emotionally grounded, empathic, curious, respectful and assertive. While the conflict probably won’t get resolved over the holidays, we can acknowledge our part in it, and invite the other person to work with us towards resolution after the festivities. Share the mental picture of working together against the problem, instead of against each other.

When we build shared purpose and understanding in this way, we strengthen relationship and create stronger bonds. Constructive approaches to conflict really can help the holiday season be “the most wonderful time of the year.”

The holidays can be a beautiful time of year, with the soft glow of twinkling lights near a roaring fire while the smell from fresh baking fills the room.

But the combination of holiday decor and traditions can have devastating results.

Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey offered some advice for West Shore resident to help prevent holiday disasters from occurring.

“Cooking is the number one cause of house fires,” Aubrey said, regardless what time of year it is. But since the holidays can be hectic, with lots of baking or cooking, it’s easy to become distracted while something’s on the stove or in the oven.

While Aubrey said he didn’t want to discourage anyone from these great holiday traditions, he noted “we want to make sure people are safe while doing that.”

Although he said they are seeing fewer fires directly related to Christmas, there is always that risk associated with decorations as well as cooking.

“Never leave a candle unattended … I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been to a fire where someone lit a candle and walked away and came back to the entire room on fire,” Aubrey said.

A lot of holiday traditions come with some added risk but Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey offered some tips to help keep your family safe this Christmas. (PIXABAY) “They’re beautiful and often come with beautiful scents that make your house smell nice but we do have to treat them with respect.”

If you are burning candles, he suggested avoiding long, tapered varieties and instead opt for something with a thick, sturdy base. He added it’s also important to make sure candles are contained in a non-combustible container, that way as they burn down they continue to be protected by the container.

The holidays are also a great time to speak with your kids about fire safety and candles.

And while Aubrey joked firefighters are fortunate that the majority of residents are no longer using candles on live Christmas tree, there are still some concerns that come along with bringing a tree inside your home.

“You just have to make sure they’re well watered,” he explained. While it may

Besides making sure trees are a safe distance from heat, it’s also important to check the wiring of all lights – including your outdoor strands. If any wires are frayed, split or shorting out, Aubrey noted they need to be disposed of.

He added it’s also important to “limit the use of powerbars and extension cords so they’re not overloading your house.”

If you have guests or family members staying with you during the season, make

sure they know all of the emergency exits and where any fire extinguishers and alarms are placed.

Caring for the outside of your home can be just as important in the event of a disaster. Make sure all driveways and walkways are clear of leaves, debris, ice or snow.

This provides easy access to your home for you and anyone visiting, including first responders.

If you need to be on a ladder or your roof in the coming weeks, Aubrey suggested waiting for a clear day that’s not icy to tackle outside jobs such as clearing gutters and hanging Christmas lights. He added you can utilize a break in the weather now when it’s safer to hang lights but don’t have to turn them on until later in the season. “Just take precautions when putting the lights up,” he said, adding it’s also important to make sure someone is home and holding the ladder.

SWEET POTATO SWEETHEARTS FOR DOGS • 1 cup boiled mashed sweet potato (can substitute with pumpkin or butternut squash) • 1 1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal • 1/4 cup dried cranberries • 1 tsp nutritional yeast • 1 tbsp honey Preheat oven to 370 F and butter a large cookie sheet. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix very well.

Scoop small balls (1 tsp size) on cookie sheet approx 1 inch apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes.

RASPBERRY AND ALMOND SHORTBREAD THUMBPRINTS • 1 cup butter, softened • 2/3 cup white sugar • 1/2 tsp almond extract • 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1/2 cup seedless raspberry jam • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar • 3/4 tsp almond extract • 1 tsp milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a medium bowl, cream together butter and white sugar until smooth. Mix in 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Mix in flour until dough comes together.

Roll dough into 1 1/2 inch balls, and place on ungreased cookie sheets. Make a small hole in the center of each ball, using your thumb and finger, and fill the hole with preserves.

Bake for 14 to 18 minutes in preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Let cool 1 minute on the cookie sheet.

In a medium bowl, mix together the confectioners' sugar, 3/4 teaspoon almond extract, and milk until smooth. Drizzle lightly over warm cookies.

RICE KRISPIE TREES 12 Miniature Reese’s Cups • 1/3 cup M&M Minis 12 Candy Stars • 3 cup Powdered Sugar 3 tbsp Milk • 3 tbsp Corn Syrup Make Green Krispie Treats (on Rice Krispies Box) Butter a your hands and form mixture into cone shapes. Form to shape of trees. Place cones onto prepared pan. Allow to cool and firm up for several hours.

Mix powdered sugar, milk and corn syrup in a bowl until smooth. Transfer to piping bag or zippered bag to pipe onto cookies. Pipe like a garland around each tree. Space M&M minis like ornaments onto the garland. Pipe a dab of icing on top of tree to act as glue and attach star.

Place a Reese’s upside down on pan. Pipe icing on it and place tree on top.

• 1 large egg • 1 cup sugar • 2 tsp baking powder

Cream butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla.

Mix all dry ingredients and add slowly to butter cream mixture until incorporated. Roll out on lightly floured board to desired thickness. Cutout 2-1/2” hearts and bake at 400 degrees for 7- 10 minutes. Should be light in color with light browning on the edges.

SUGAR COOKIE ICING • 1 cup powdered sugar • 2 tsp milk • 2 tsp light corn syrup • food coloring • 1⁄4 tsp vanilla extract or 1⁄4 tsp almond extract DIRECTIONS: Stir the powdered sugar and the milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and vanilla until icing is smooth and glossy. If it’s too thick, add more corn syrup. Divide icing into separate bowls and stir in food coloring as desired. You can dip the cookies, paint them with a paint brush or spread them using a knife or the back of a spoon.

MELTED MARSHMALLOW SNOWMEN • 200g fondant icing sugar • 6 white marshmallows • 6 large cookies • 24 mini chocolate beans • 6 pretzel sticks Put the icing sugar into a bowl and add cold water a teaspoon at a time until the mixture is runny but thick enough to coat a spoon. Snip the marshmallows in half using wetted scissors. Spoon a little icing onto each cookie and attach half a marshmallow. Using a little icing, stick the other half on top at an angle. Drizzle a little more icing onto the cookie to make melting snow.

Break the pretzel sticks in half and place on the cookie for arms. Stick orange chocolate beans on for the noses. Stick three chocolate beans on each cookie to represent buttons.

Using the writing icing, pipe small blobs for the eyes and mouth. Leave to set.

TRANDITIONAL TOURTIERE(FRENCH-CANADIAN (FRENCH-CANADIAN MEAT PIE) TRADITIONAL TOURTIERE MEAT PIE) Pie Pastry (makes 2 double crusted 9-inch pies) Combine in large bowl and place in fridge: 1928 g all purpose flour, 50g sugar, and 7g salt. In separate container, combine and place in fridge: ¼ cup lemon juice and 2 1/2 cup cold water.

In a third container, cube 1205g of unsalted butter and place in freezer.

Process by hand with pastry cutter or in food processor, cubed butter and flour mixture in bowl, until butter is the size of small peas. Gradually add water mixture until dough just comes together. The key is not to over mix the dough and it will appear crumbly at first.

Divide dough into two. Wrap and refrigerate to rest for at least 1 hour.

Make the filling in the meantime…

Traditional Meat Filling: 2 Tbsp butter 1Tbsp oil 1 large white or yellow cooking onion, diced (roughly 2 cups) 4 cloves of garlic, minced 1 lb lean ground pork 1 lb lean ground beef ½ cup chicken stock 1 tsp salt ½ tsp ground pepper ½ tsp ground allspice

¼ tsp ground clove ¼ tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground nutmeg 1 cup yukon or yellow potato, peeled and cut into small cubes.

In a large heavy frying pan, heat butter and oil, over medium low heat. Add onions and garlic, sauté until onions are translucent. Add pork and beef, cook until there is no pink, using a wooden spoon or fork to break up large clumps.

Stir in stock, salt, pepper and spices and potato. Reduce heat to low and cook until potato is tender, about 30 minutes.

Cool meat mixture slightly.

Preheat oven to 425F. Meanwhile, roll out pastry onto floured surface. Line two 9” pie pans with ¼” thick pastry (use one half of dough for 2 pies) Keep any trimings and add to other half of dough.

Fill both pies with meat mixture.

Using the other half of dough, roll out two more 9” circles to cover pies. Crimp edges, using a fork or your fingers. Cut in centre a couple of slits or alternatively using a cookie cutter (a star, heart, circle, etc) You may also use up any pieces of leftover pastry and arrange on top (some decorative leaves or shapes) *At this point you can freeze the pie.

You can bake the pies from frozen, adding 10 to 20 minutes of baking time.

Combine one egg yolk and 2 tbsp light cream and brush over top of the crusts.

Bake pies for 20 min. then dropping the oven temperature to 350F and continue to cook for another 20 to 30 min. until pastry is crisp, cooked thorough and lightly browned. Serve hot with your favourite artisan ketchup, relish or steak sauce. For an even more traditional tourtière, replace potatoes with ¾ cup old fashioned rolled oats.

The pastry recipe is versatile for any pie, sweet or savoury. Meat pies are also an easy way to use up leftover meats, from the holidays: Replace cooked turkey for ground meats, add peas, carrots to the onions.

Switch the spices to traditional turkey seasonings: sage, savoury and thyme.

Add leftover turkey gravy and use up any leftover yams or potato (instead of adding raw potato and chicken stock).

One thing I always crave around this time of year, are my grandmothers’ tourtières. Before it gets too crazy, I like to make a few ahead and freeze them. making it an easy meal to enjoy during the holidays with a little less stress.

Ingredients 1 cup icing sugar 1/2 cup peanut butter 3 Tb butter, softened 1 pound white candy coating, coarsely chopped Directions 1. In a bowl, combine the sugar, peanut butter and butter.

Shape into 1-in. balls and place on a waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Chill for 30 minutes or until firm.

2. Meanwhile, melt the candy coating in a microwave-safe bowl. Dip balls and place on waxed paper to harden.

A tasty take on turkey just in time for the holidays As tasty as turkey can be, this flavorful fowl doesn’t find its way onto many families’ dinner tables unless it’s December 25th.

Secret family turkey recipes may reign supreme in some households, but holiday hosts with no such resources can consider this unique recipe for “Holiday Turkey” from Andrew Schloss’ “Cooking Slow” (Chronicle Books). By slow cooking the turkey, cooks can ensure it’s evenly cooked

skim the fat from the surface of the liquid in the pan. Put the roasting pan over two burners and bring the pan drippings to a boil over high heat. Cook until the juices reduce and thicken slightly, enough to coat a spoon, about 10 minutes. Taste for seasoning. Carve the turkey and serve with cider pan juices.

Resting tip: Slow-roasted meats need far less resting time (pretty much none) than those that are traditionally roasted. The

reason for resting meat that has been roasted at a high temperature is to allow juices that have collected in the cooler center time to migrate back into the dryer (hotter) exterior sections after it comes out of the oven. Because slow-roasted meats are cooked evenly and a temperature that keeps most of the juices in place, a resting period is largely unnecessary. A brief resting time does allow the meat to become a little firmer as it cools, making it easier to carve.

Makes 15 servings

1 fresh turkey, about 15 pounds, preferably free-range 1 Tb olive oil 1 Litre apple cider 2 tsp dried poultry seasoning Coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Remove the giblets from the turkey and discard (or save for another use). Rinse the turkey inside and out and pat dry with paper towels. Rub it all over with salt and pepper.

Refrigerate, uncovered, for at least 12 hours and up to 24 hours. During that time, the surface of the turkey will become visibly dry and the skin will tighten; this encourages a nice crisp skin on the finished bird.

Remove the turkey from the refrigerator 1 hour before you plan to start roasting.

Preheat the oven to 450 F. Put the turkey on a rack set in a large, flameproof roasting pan. Drizzle the oil over the top.

Roast for 1 hour. Reduce the oven temperature to 175 F. Pour the cider into the roasting pan and sprinkle the poultry seasoning in the liquid. Continue roasting until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of a thigh (but not touching bone) registers to 170 F. 5 INGREDIENT DOUBLE CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINT COOKIES • 1 box Devil's Food Chocolate Cake Mix • 1/2 cup (1 stick) room temperature butter • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup milk chocolate chips, divided • 1/2 cup peppermint bits, divided Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Stir together cake mix, butter and eggs until combined. Stir in ½ cup chocolate chips and ¼ peppermint bits.

Using a cookie scoop, divide dough onto baking sheets. Top with remaining chocolate chips and peppermint bits, if desired.

Bake at 350 degrees for about 13-15 minutes or until cookies are puffy and no longer glossy.

Cool for a few minutes on the baking sheets before transferring to cooling racks. Makes approx 24 cookies.

Convoy set to dazzle thousands Nineteenth annual event takes place Saturday, Dec. 1 News Gazette staff

Trucks covered in thousands of multi-coloured Christmas lights and decorations will dazzle residents young and old throughout Greater Victoria next month.

As part of the 20th annual Island Equipment Owners Association’s Truck Light Convoy, which kicks off on Saturday, Dec. 1, roughly 80 truck will begin at Ogden Point at 5:45 p.m. and, with the help of a police escort, wind through Victoria, Colwood and Langford, before ending at Western Speedway at around 8:30 p.m.

The trucks then park and the public is invited to enjoy a hot dog, hot chocolate and see the trucks up close.

New this year, residents will be able to track the convoy’s progress online.

The Q radio station will also be giving updates on how close the convoy is to your area.

“I just get tingles. It’s just such an amazing cause, it’s just such an amazing event,” association manager Wendy Watt said. “The hours that the truck drivers and all the equipment owners put in to do this is just amazing and it’s all just out of the generosity of their own heart … it takes hours and thousands of lights.”

While residents cannot hand food to drivers during the event, there will be a number of drop off locations set up throughout the various municipalities.

A number of local groups, businesses and firefighters will be collecting donations the night of the event.

Some include View Royal Fire Rescue collecting at Helmcken Road and Watkiss Way, Colwood Fire Rescue at Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre and Sands Funeral Home, Thrifty Foods

in Colwood, Langford Fire Rescue at the corner of Verterans Memorial Parkway and Goldstream Avenue and Millstream Village.

More drop off locations will be released about two weeks before the event. Donations benefit a number of food banks including the Goldstream Food Bank, James Bay Community Kitchen, Mustard Seed, and Salvation Army. Over the years, the association has donated more than 154,000 pounds of food.

“We just want to create awareness in the community of how important it is [to donate] any time of the year, but Christmas and the winter time especially,” said Watt, noting many residents will set up their chairs along the 35-kilometre route around 3 p.m. the day of to ensure they get the best view possible. “I’m just really proud of the association and all that they’ve accomplished over the years in giving back to the community where we all do work and play.”
