POWDER CHAIR While the aptly named Powder Chair has long been a favourite THE NEW go-to location for skiers and FOUR-PASSENGER snowboarders at Big White, the antiquated triple chair that had serviced LIFT HAS REPLACED the area since 1979 had outgrown its ability to keep up with demand. So, over the summer, Big CANADA’S OLDEST AND MOST White invested close to $4 million to replace it with a POPULAR TRIPLE CHAIR. new fixed grip quad chair. Eric Bobert, Lead Hand in Mountain Operations for Big White Ski Resort explains, “Everything from the original lift installed in 1979 has been removed – the top, the bottom, the 14 towers, and the assemblies.” In an effort to better service passengers, the new lift travels a different route up the mountain. “We re-aligned it,” notes Eric, “and it’s now closer to Powder Gulch at the bottom station and the top station is higher than the old one was so it should create easier access to get to Corkscrew, the Powder Bowl and Falcon access.” The new lift required 12 towers to be flown in by helicopter for installation and as these towers are taller, its enabled Big White to create a new run underneath where the old chair line used to be. “It always was a great run,” says Eric, “but there were places where you couldn’t ski under it due to height concerns. The new lift is tall enough that there should now be full clearance to ski under it all season.” The new four-passenger lift has replaced Canada’s oldest and most popular triple chair.
While in service, the old three-passenger Powder Chair provided an estimated 15,868,476 rides.
Chances are people won’t feel too sentimental or miss the old lift once they’ve hopped onto the new quad that not only increases upload capacity to 2400 passengers an hour but makes it easier to access the Falcon and Gem Lake areas. As for the old triple chair, it won’t just rust in peace. It’s been purchased by another Canadian resort to be repurposed and will hopefully be up and spinning again soon.

Growing up as a third generation Kelowna resident (his family arrived in 1914), Flynn started skiing at Big White in 1982. But as an avid skateboarder, he became increasingly interested in the new sport of snowboarding and in 1984 when he was finally able to get his own board, he couldn’t wait to ride it. His only problem? Snowboards were not allowed on the lifts! “We used to have to hike up,” recalls Flynn, Director of Terrain Park and Outdoor Activities. But after giving a demonstration to the Transportation Ministry of Lifts and Railways during the 84/85 season to prove they could safely get on and off the lifts, Flynn and friends opened the gates for snowboarding on the hill. And in 1987, he became Big White’s first snowboard instructor. Once the sport was established, Flynn left Big White and headed to Whistler where he pursued a career competing at the World Cup level for several years, but returned to the mountain in 1994 and has been here ever since. He organized the first banked at Big White in 1988 and got it going again upon his return in 1994. “Then in 1997 our friend Neil Edgeworth was killed in an avalanche in Chamonix France and we renamed it the Neil Edgeworth Memorial Banked Slalom and we’ve been running it ever since.” DIRECTOR OF TERRAIN PARK AND OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES He’s been a pivotal player in the development of the sport of snowboarding, helping establish Big White’s first terrain park in 2002 and TELUS Park in 2004. He also cemented Big White’s position on the Para World Cup Snowboarding circuit and this February marks the seventh time we’ve hosted their event. “We also do a lot of work with amateur snowboarding, ski-cross and freestyle ski development,” notes Flynn. “It’s been a real blessing for me to work for this family-owned resort for 27 years and to have such an amazing opportunity to grow the sport of snowboarding and now, ski-cross and freestyle skiing,” he says. “From the early days when it wasn’t even a sport to what we have now with TELUS Park – one of the best ski and snowboard event venues in Canada,” he recalls. “Big White can be proud of TELUS Park. It shows the true commitment to snowboarding and ski sports that the Schumann family has invested in our youth.”

This year’s winner is Shane O’Dwyer with his winning concoction, Peaches & Dreams. Although it was Shane’s first time winning, it’s the third time a member of his family has walked away with the coveted cup. “My brother Karl won in both 2015 and 2016,” notes Shane, who hopes to try again next year to equal his brother’s number of wins. The Globe also clinched the award in 2013, when manager Johanne Audette designed the winning drink. Shane first began tending bar and creating drinks while living in New York. Originally from County Meath in Ireland, his love of skiing has led him to Big White and the bountiful Okanagan, where we grow some of the best peaches in the

The contest, sponsored by Okanagan Spirits, requires mixologists to create a cocktail that includes wine as one of its ingredients. “I added a 2016 Riesling from Summerhill Winery,” notes Shane. The rye-based cocktail also boasts blueberry liquor, peach puree and hints of cayenne and chipotle to give it just the tiniest kick. The drink paired perfectly with an appetizer created by the Globe’s chef Joshua Buckle. For Shane, one of the perks of working at The Globe and Blarney Stone at Big White is getting to be creative behind the bar. “The bosses here trust us to do it right and give us some free reign,” he smiled. Co-owner Jude Brunt notes, “Having staff like Shane, who love to be creative, is inspiring to all our other staff who join the team from around the world each year. Many of our young bartenders have already learned so much to develop their craft, working alongside our talented managers like Shane and his brother, Karl before him. And that in turn makes our guest experience even better...which then makes restaurant ownership something to be proud of too!” Shane and the rest of the crew at The Globe are known for their Old Fashioned’s, which they make in advance and store to age for three weeks in barrels to enhance the flavor. The Globe & Tapas Bar is located in the Village Centre above The Market. In addition to having an award-winning bartender, you’ll find live music there every Thursday and Sunday nights starting at 7PM.

Santa will be taking a break from his hectic Christmas prep time by coming to play in Big White’s Tube Park on Friday, Dec 14th from 3:30PM to 5PM. Come and invite Santa to ride with your group or even challenge him to a race! In between runs, you’ll find him enjoying the free hot chocolate around the bonfire at the bottom of the tubing runs. It’s a great chance to get a photo and maybe even a candy cane. After a quick trip back to the North Pole to make sure the elves have everything under control, Santa will be back at Big White to meet you in his special workshop, located in the Village. Guest Services Manager Bethan Wetheral notes, “Santa’s Workshop will be set up Dec. 21 to 24, inside the Telus Igloo in the Village and we’ll be offering free photos with Santa for anyone who comes in.” On Sunday, Dec 23, you can have a buffet breakfast with Santa in the Moose Lounge in Happy Valley from 8AM to 10AM. The kid’s pancake bar with festive toppings will no doubt please even the pickiest little eaters and other offerings include fruit salad and yogurt, fresh baked pastries, maple bacon and more. Christmas Eve this year offers some regular favourite activities along with some new ones. If you’ve never experienced Pastor Jack’s Christmas Eve church service in the Village Centre Mall, then you’re in for a beautiful surprise. Complete with the Big White Ski School Choir, it begins at 4:30PM. Make sure to arrive at least an hour beforehand if you want a good seat as it gets packed. Following the service, guests can enjoy the new Christmas Eve Festival. Bethan notes, “It will feature a
bunch of different booths where you can go do different activities, such as write postcards to home or have some roasted chestnuts.” You’ll also find our ‘Merry Christmas From Around The World’ photo booth and a decoration station where you can create your own Christmas ornament. And because Christmas is a time of giving, we’re having a clothing and food donation drop-off station so you can share with the less fortunate. There won’t be a parade this year but we plan to finish off the evening’s festivities by lighting up the sky with fireworks to help Santa find his way back. After he finishes delivering toys around the world, Santa loves to relax by getting in a few runs here at Big White. You can meet up with Santa in the Village at 10AM Christmas morning and go do a few laps with him. If you’re lucky enough to have secured accommodations for our busiest time of the year, you’re in for a real treat with our annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display. Every year, Big White’s pyro-technicians pride themselves in going a wee bit overboard with not one but two firework shows. The first, designed so that little ones don’t have to miss out on the fun, is set to fly in Happy Valley at 8:15PM with the second show at midnight in the Village. We’ve also got Cosmic Skating, a disco skating party happening with laser lights and a DJ on Canada’s highest outdoor rink in Happy Valley starting at 6:30PM New Year’s Eve. 2. A Quiet Walk in the Woods
If you’ve never been out our snowshoe/wilderness trails, then you’re in for a wonderful treat. Snowshoes are recommended but not necessary providing you have good treads on your boots and stay on the welltrodden paths. Once you get out into the woods, then stop and listen to the wonderful sound of silence. Take a few deep breaths of fresh mountain air and suddenly the world might make sense again. There’s a $15 trail fee but if you’ve already got a lift pass, it’s included free of charge. Make sure to leave a note for your family so they know where you are, then enjoy some solitude in the woods.
3. Massage
Without a doubt, one of the best ways to alleviate stress is by having a pair of professionally trained hands knead it out of your muscles. Here at Big White we have two great options for you. Her Big White career started with the transformation of the Moonlight Bistro AUD RE Y at Gem Lake upon her arrival in 2013. Audrey then moved over to open the Black Forest D E ME R S & Day Lodge in 2015 and ultimately, implementing a new menu at the Clocktower Café Co. a year N A TE G A R D later. Well known for her baking and desserts as well as her ability to put a fresh slant on much loved standbys, Audrey notes, “We hope to add a more global twist to the side dishes and specials. Tag-teaming with Audrey is Chef Nate Gard. With 25 years of experience, primarily working in Sydney Australia’s Manly Beach circuit, Nate has created his own eclectic style by combining the knowledge he’s gained from so many different ethnic cuisines. A grilling master, he is also passionate about creating savoury sauces. “I’m predominantly a saucier – I can create a sauce for just about anything,” he says. So, while Audrey gets to focus on her forte of side dishes and desserts, Nate will be the one ensuring your medium rare arrives at the table medium rare, on time, and accompanied with his own secret sauce. Nate joins Audrey in praising what the previous chefs have done, building the Black Diamond into the highly regarded fine dining restaurant it is today and notes they don’t want to mess with the consistency of what people have come to expect and enjoy. “We just want to enhance it,” he says. Owners Don and Theresa Hickson are excited to have this dynamic duo working in their kitchen. In addition to their great food, Black Diamond is also known for their homemade gluhwein and milkshakes – both non-alcoholic and those with a kick. “We sold thousands of them last season,” remarks Don. Already sold out for New Year’s Eve before they’d even opened for the season, reservations at the Black Diamond are always encouraged. “Last year we had nights where we had to turn away over 100 people,” recalls Don. The Black Diamond is located in the Village Centre, inside Chateau Big White. They’re open for breakfast each morning starting at 8AM, with lunch service beginning at 11AM and dinner starting at 4PM. The kitchen is set to officially close at 9PM but has been known to remain open a little longer so as not to rush anyone. First Chair OF THE SEASON!
The early bird might catch the worm, but it takes a night owl to catch the first chair up of the season. “We were out here at 9PM last night and pitched a tent to sleep in,” noted Lewis Brunt as he and his brother and two friends stood at the front of the line to ride up the Ridge Rocket Express chairlift on opening day, Nov. 22, 2018. While it was Lewis’s third year getting to ride up first, he needs to do it a few more times to do to catch up with his brother Owen, who was celebrating his fifth season of being on the first opening day chair. Joining the two brothers were Luciano Buarducci and Adam Isfan – both of whom were finding themselves on the first chair of the season for the second time. Luciano admitted, “It was freezing cold last night, not pleasant at all,” he smiled, “but it was fun.” Getting onto the second chair didn’t require quite so much effort as the rest of the line didn’t start forming until about 40 minutes before opening. Regardless of where people were in line, most were stoked to get those first few runs of the season in and happy to have Big White open again for another year of Champagne Powder!

If you were up here on the mountain during the month of November and looked up at the gondola, you might have done a double take wondering where you were as the movie crew from Hallmark took over parts of the resort to film scenes for the movie Winter Princess. They spent three weeks in pre-production and another three weeks filming. “We hired locals as background performers and at times we had 60 people as extras – it varied from day to day,” says the film’s producer, Kim Roberts. The film stars Natalie Hall (TV – Charmed, NCIS: New Orleans, Shades of Blue; Film – Only the Brave, True Blood) and Chris McNally (Altered Carbon, The Weetest Heart, Rocky Mountain Christmas and The Orchard). It is being directed by Allan Harmon. In order to fit the script, Big White was transformed into Snowden Peaks, so a lot of the signage was changed around for filming, including some of the gondolas. Wondering what the plot is? Kim replies, “It’s about a princess from Landora, a small country in Europe, who has been working at a ski resort to get experience as a commoner. Her boss quits and she has to decide whether to return to Landora or stay and put on the big event she’d come to work at in the first place. The brother of the resort’s owner returns to help with the event and while working together, the two of them fall in love. Her father and brother both come to the resort because they’re concerned she won’t return to do her duties in Landora. Hopefully it will all end up happily ever after.” Jon Summerland of the Okanagan Film Commission notes that Big White was the perfect location for this film. “The producers, cast and crew had nothing but great things to say about the management Big White Ski Resort and how accommodating they have been.” Watch for the Winter Princess movie to be released next year.

With 15 lifts and 119 different runs across 2,765 acres of terrain, it could take a person several weeks to explore all that Big White has to offer. For those arriving new to the mountain, one of the best ways to learn your way around is to take advantage of our free Snow Host tours, offered every single morning of the season. If the thought of being stuck in a slow group is stopping you from trying one, fear not! We are careful to match people up with those of similar ability levels so nobody is left feeling like they’re causing everyone else to wait or standing around wishing they had not been paired up with a snow-plower. Bernie Cundliffe is one of 26 people volunteering this season as a Snow Host here at Big White. It’s his eighth year Snow Hosting for us. “I really enjoy skiing and enjoy being up here. My wife is not a skier,” so rather than skiing alone, he says, “this gives me the opportunity to ski with people from all over the world.” Anyone interested in trying our Snow Host tours is asked to meet in the Village Centre outside of Dizzy’s starting at 10:15AM, in anticipation of a 10:30AM departure. There are usually six or seven Snow Hosts on duty each day so that groups can be formed according to ability or, for those who prefer, to keep a family together. For Bernie, it’s all about helping others learn to love this mountain as much as he does. When asked what his favourite run is, he replies, “It’s more like a favourite area than a favourite run, and that area is Gem Lake.” You’ll also spot our Snow Hosts out every morning from 9AM to 10AM at the top of most chairlifts, handing out maps or offering directions for those with questions. They’re easy to identify, sporting their bright yellow Snow Host jackets. Questions ranging from, ‘How can I ski back to my condo?’ to ‘Where is the yoga studio?’ can be answered by our amazing team of Snow Hosts volunteers. They are truly a great resource if you want to learn the easiest way to get around and take advantage of all Big White has to offer.
