With more than one million built by the 1960s, was Chrysler really the creator of the mass-market minivan?

1947 with Ben Pon, a Dutch businessman and hopeful VW importer.

He saw the need for an inexpensive commercial vehicle and showed a rough sketch to the British authorities who, following the end of the Second World War, were in charge of VW manufacturing. Pon was inspired by the Plattenwagen, a very basic flat-deck VW truck that was used to shuttle parts to different factory work stations. He saw it as the perfect truck to help Germany, Holland and the rest of the war-ravaged European nations get back on their feet as all manner of commercial transportation was in great demand.

By 1948, full-scale development of Pon’s concept, originally dubbed the Type 29, was well under way and the first completed prototype, officially called the Transporter, was shown to the press at the 1949 Geneva (Switzerland) Motor Show. The 25-horsepower air-cooled horizontally opposed “boxer” four-cylinder engine and non-synchro four-speed manual gearbox came straight from the sedan, but the brakes and steering were upgraded and the unitized (frameless) shell was considerably beefed-up to handle a maximum 1,650 pounds (750 kilograms) of cargo.

With a minimum of horsepower, but a maximum of fun, reliability and adventure on a shoestring budget, Volkswagen’s boxy vans carted people to and from school, transported families on cross-country vacations and became the focal point for a generation of disaffected 1960s-era youth who shunned mainstream automobiles in favour of these rolling political and cultural icons.

Chrysler’s minivan might have struck with more ferocity in 1984, but Volkswagen got the wheels

rolling decades earlier and for different reasons.

As with the Beetle that spawned it, the VW bus appealed to frugal North American buyers who appreciated solid construction and prized superior fuel economy despite the fact that gasoline was as cheap as dirt.

In Minden, Germany, Volkswagen’s homeland, the rationale behind the van was a different story. The idea of creating a cargo-based carrier from existing Beetle running gear originated in

Mounting the spare tire on the outside, below the windshield, became a popular safety-inspired modification, even if it presented only the illusion of safety.

The Transporter was bare-bones basic (for example, only the driver’s side of the split windshield was equipped with a wiper), but its king-size space behind the front seats was perfect for a wide variety of commercial duties and carrying needs.

By the mid-1950s, more than 100,000 delivery

vans had rolled off the factory floor. Most were in Europe functioning as emergency vehicles, refrigerated food carriers, bread vans and service vehicles. The pickup version, launched in 1952, featured hinged sides that turned the traditional box into a flat-bed for carrying wide items. As well, a double-cab introduced in 1958 became one of the first four-door pickups on the market, predating North American Crew Cabs by several years.

VW’s planners began experimenting with passenger-bus versions for the family market, including the Kombi, essentially a commercial van with added side windows and a bench seat bolted behind the front buckets.

A wide variety of van types were sold in relatively small numbers on our shores, but buses, both regular and dual-purpose camper models, became increasingly popular. By far the most attractive was the 21-window Micro-bus DeLuxe, complete with two-tone paint, canvas sunroof and eight tiny windows positioned above the side glass that made it look like a miniature Greyhound Scenicruiser.

By the early 1960s, more than one million Transporters were built and the low engine output, the Achilles heel of all VWs at the time, eventually reached a whopping 44 horsepower.

By 1967, the last of the Volkswagen “splitties” (for split-windshield), as the original vans were nicknamed, were replaced by models that were bigger, safer, more powerful, even if they lacked the charm and style of the originals. However, they were priced right and sold in plentiful numbers until their replacements arrived 12 years later.

Fast forward to 1984 when then-Chrysler boss Lee Iacocca took credit for inventing the minivan when he introduced the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan. It seems remiss not to acknowledge the contribution of Volkswagen’s efforts to bring its affordable work-and-play vehicles to the masses.

This is a special time of year for many people, as holiday festivities occur involving family, friends and co-workers – and many of us will be enjoying the spirit of the season.

However, if your activities may involve drinking or consuming cannabis, plan ahead for a safe ride home. Arrange a designated driver, call a taxi or friend, or take transit – but do not get behind the wheel.

Sadly, each year in B.C., 65 people die in crashes involving impaired driving. Almost half of those deaths happen during the summer. However, other deaths happen during what should be joyous celebrations during the winter holidays.

According to ICBC, an average of 340 people are injured in 1,200 crashes in B.C. each year between December 24-26 alone.

For those who may believe this cautionary message only applies to those indulging in alcohol, think twice. Transport Canada reports the percentage of Canadian drivers killed

in vehicle crashes who tested positive for drugs (40%) now actually exceeds the numbers who test positive for alcohol (33%) – and impaired driving is the leading criminal cause of death and injury in Canada.

And for those who simply aren’t getting the message, consider that BC has the toughest drinking and driving laws in Canada. If you’re caught driving impaired, you could face these penalties: • Driving suspensions from 24 hours to 90 days • Vehicle impoundment • Fines, from $600 and up to $4,060 • Jail time • Mandatory rehabilitation • You may have to pay a Driver Risk Premium, on top of your insurance.

Furthermore, if you crash while driving impaired, you’re likely in breach of your insurance policy. That means you could be

personally responsible for 100 per cent of the costs if you damage someone else’s property or injure them.

When you drink or consume cannabis and then choose to get behind the wheel you not only risk your life but those of others on the road. With so many options to get home safely, there is no excuse to drive while impaired.

And a final caution to all drivers. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted. Put down your cellphone or any other device that may take your attention away from the road. When you are behind the wheel, focus on the road. Allow everyone to enjoy the holiday season – because the alternative is simply not worth it.

Are there other costs to cash back?

Some dealerships offer cash back as a part of a vehicle purchase. It may not feel like it, but this is the same as asking if you want cash back when you buy groceries. It’s clear the money is coming from your credit card or bank account at the grocery store. They are not giving you free money. That’s true when you buy a car, too.

You’re also going to pay interest at the same rate as your car loan on the cash back, negative equity and sales tax. Your payments will be increased, or the term may be extended, to cover the added interest and the additional borrowing. Your end of term payment may be higher. Be sure you include the impact of the added sales tax when you compare interest rates.

How is cash back processed?

Cash back is not done as a separate transaction or loan.

Instead, one way is for the price of the vehicle to be increased to include the amount of any cash back. This is how negative equity on a trade-in is also handled. The price of the trade-in also gets artificially inflated. (Negative equity is when you owe more on a car than it’s worth.) That difference in value needs to go somewhere. It gets added to your loan and now your loan amount is more than the value of your vehicle.

Are there other impacts of getting cash back?

If you don’t have negative equity already, adding cash back will likely put you there. If your vehicle is damaged or written off, most insurance policies pay out only the value of the vehicle, not the loan amount. You will be on the hook to pay any difference to the bank or finance company.

Is there a loan fee for cash back or negative equity?

Does the VSA regulate cash back or negative equity?

When cash back or negative equity gets built into the vehicle price, you’ll pay at least 12% in BC sales tax to borrow that money. Based on the final price, the tax rate could be as high as 25%. This is because the luxury vehicle tax rates are based on the declared value of the vehicle on the purchase agreement. You could think of this as the loan fee.

If it’s proven that you were aware that you were accepting cash back or including negative equity, the authority of the VSA to assist you may be limited. The consumer protection laws of British Columbia offer significant protections when you buy a vehicle for personal use from a licensed dealer. This may include the assistance of the Vehicle Sales Authority in resolving a dispute.

gets down and dirty digging up the news.

The production Santa Cruz will likely be a much tamer version of this show vehicle, but the most important thing is that the automaker will finally have a pickup in the lineup. P H O T O : H Y U N D A I

The Hyundai Santa Cruz, or something like it, is a still a go: Among the evolving hot categories is the mid-

size-pickup segment, especially since Ford is bringing back the Ranger nameplate following a long absence. Hyundai teased truck buyers with a Santa Cruz small truck concept in 2015 and now The Sleuth’s sources hear that it — or something quite similar — is definitely production-bound for the 2020 model year. What’s more, the related Kia brand is expected to have its own pickup a year or two following the launch of the new Hyundai. The Santa Cruz is expected to stick with the sport-truck theme, which means it will come only in extended-cab format, while Kia’s version would use the same platform but likely have totally different look. Both trucks would share the same powertrains that would likely include turbocharged four-cylinder and hybrid drive systems.

Toyota to add more sportiness to some unlikely sedans: The

Sleuth hears that Honda is Toyota’s target as it looks to increase the visibility of the TRD brand. Those initials, which stand for Toyota Racing Development, are currently attached to special-edition Tacoma and Tundra pickups with greater off-road capability. For the 2020 model year, both the Camry and Avalon sedans — yes the Camry and Avalon — will receive the TRD treatment, including sport suspensions, body cladding, front and rear spoilers, special wheels and interiors.

Apparently, TRD models will eventually include all-wheeldrive and a bit more performance under the hood. UltiA sporty Avalon? Both it and the Camry mately, nearly every vehicle in will be available in performance-tuned Toyota’s lineup will offer the TRD models. P H O T O : T O Y O TA TRD treatment ... just as Honda is rumoured to be contemplating with the Si designation that so far is only used for special-edition Civic small cars.

The Type S is a go for Acura: The Sleuth can confirm that Honda’s pre-

mium division will launch its first really serious performance sedan in mid2019 as a 2020 model. The TLX Type S will arrive with a turbocharged 3.5-litre V-6 that is rumoured to make about 360 horsepower. All-wheel-drive will also be a Type S staple. Sporty body trim and interior fittings are also expected, but it doesn’t appear likely that a manual transmission will be part of the Type S package.

The standard Acura TLX, pictured, has up to 290 horsepower, and will be joined by a higher-performing Type S model with about 360 horsepower.

More GT500 details have come to light: The Spy Guy’s agents in the

field have ferreted out more details concerning what will be the most potent production Mustang model to turn a wheel. They confirm that GT500 will have a supercharged 5.2-litre V-8 with an output in excess of 700 horsepower to go after the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye.

The final number could actually be as high as 750 horsepower, which is a good idea considering the SRT Hellcat Redeye makes 797 horsepower. Along The Ford Mustang GT500 is on track with the monster motor, the GT500 is rumoured to eschew to make well over 700 horsepower with a supercharged version of the a traditional six-speed manual 5.2-litre V-8 engine from the GT350. transmission in favour of a pad- P H O T O : F O R D dle-shift setup that will deliver blisteringly quick zero-to-60mph times. Whatever the final numbers, the GT500 is expected to go on sale by spring.

Is there a 911 utility vehicle in Porsche’s future? As far-fetched as that seems, it’s entirely possible, say The Spymaster’s contacts. Although not necessarily a utility vehicle in the true sense of the word, such a 911 would come with all-wheel-drive plus more ground clearance, not unlike the competition 911s were entered in the grueling East Africa Safari rally events back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In fact, the car would likely tie into that heritage and be given the 911 Safari name. Other likely features would include unique flared fenders, skid plates and other specialized gear. The 911 Safari would also likely come with a bank-account-busting price tag, which makes The Sleuth wonder if anyone other than a Middle Eastern potentate or professional rally race team would ever take it off-road..

UPS AND DOWNS Extended-version Paul Walker documentary: The

star of the Fast and Furious movie franchise who died in a car crash five years ago is the subject of “I Am Paul Walker.”

The documentary was first shown in August, but a version that runs an extra 30 minutes is now available on DVD and can be downloaded on iTunes.

Manual-transmission BMWs: For people who fear

that manual transmissions are the way, they’ll be pleased to hear that the Germany-based automaker will continue to outfit the next-generation performance-oriented M3 sedan and M4 coupe with, you guessed it, manual transmissions.

New versions of the M3 and M4 are expected in late 2019.

Another good question.

Even before the economic crash of 2008, Detroit’s auto climate had gone through a rough ride, shedding jobs, slashing product programs and changing executives. But, Mulally was already making changes for the better.

He brought back the Taurus, changing it from the Five Hundred name that didn’t resonate — at all — with buyers.

Later there was a brand-new Taurus.

Mulally, in an interview with The Associated Press, said the Taurus’s demise was one of the biggest disappointments he discovered as he began work. It’s a mystery why the company gave up on the name of a car purchased by seven million buyers since its introduction in 1986. All he knew is that the decision was wrong and needed to be resolved.

“Think of how much time and attention and money it takes to establish a brand,” Mulally said. “It’s going to take unlimited effort and time to try to build up the brand that we have with the Taurus. So we fixed it.”

As a jet guy, he gave Ford what it needed at the time: fresh perspective

The learning curve was steep.

Mulally worked to understand the dealer world, spending time actually selling cars at a California dealership. He juggled the product lineup and he got Ford thinking of itself the way he thinks it should have years ago.

It is one company. It should have one vision.

“There is no reason why attractive cars in Europe can’t be sold in North America,” he told the press in 2007. “We are one Ford.”

The results of that simple statement can be seen today with the Fiesta and Focus and the new Escape, all of which sell in other countries.

“Why in the world did we get rid of the Taurus?” he asked his managers gathered in Dearborn, Mich., that day.

Good question.

It didn’t take Mulally long to make an impression at Ford.

He might have been a guy with a long and distinguished background in the aerospace industry, but the question was not rocket science. Or jet planes, for that matter.

Long before Mulally entered the automotive world in 2006 as chief executive officer for Ford during troubled times, the automaker had decided to shelve what was once the most popular car in North America.

Mulally didn’t know what to think about that. But even a non-car guy knew it wasn’t right.

Mulally made it his personal mission to get the Taurus back on track after a wishy-washy period for the brand around 2005.

In Detroit, pretty much anything goes.

And with Mulally, anything seemed possible, like not taking government bailout money in 2009 — when others were on the ropes — and earning the respect of a nation in the process.

How did it all work out? Under Mulally, Ford became a company that seemed to have a crystal ball. It led the way switching to smaller engines that used turbochargers to “Ecoboost” their power levels. It built cutting-edge hybrid and electric powertrains as well as a 662-horsepower version of the Mustang. Today, that crystal ball sees a future without sedans such as the very Taurus that Mulally brought back from the dead.

From a jet guy, to running a car company, to signing on with Google in 2014. Just like Ford, changing with the times and rolling with punches.

One Ford and one Mulally, a guy who is a difference maker in an operation that seemed to be struggling to find a vision.

Mulally was hired from his post at Boeing Co. to help find that vision and turn it into profit.

Although Mulally was not a “car guy” at heart, the Ford family recognized that a slide in sales and the shift by North American buyers away from trucks and large utility vehicles such as the Ford Explorer meant that the once-proud company was in a dangerous position.

Enter Mulally, a guy who made Boeing into a powerhouse against the equally powerful Airbus airplane corporation.

When he came to Ford, he studied the teambased approach to building the original Taurus and used some the tenets acquired in producing the Boeing 777 passenger jet.

While at Boeing, Mulally drove a Lexus luxury sedan, which he said was among the finest automobiles in the world.

The so-called Efficiency Leaves ‘grow’ on the display as you brake and accelerate gently. Vines bearing tell-tale leaves intertwine as your driving style, aided by the start-stop technology, reduces gas consumption.

Be aware though, release that lead foot or climb a hill too aggressively and they wilt away before your eyes! – Just hope some interfering back seat driver doesn’t see evidence of your failings from over your shoulder.

Drive smoothly on a long journey and beautiful apple blossoms appear as you further decrease Big Oil’s profits. And they stay on display permanently unless humility drives you to clear them.

Some chance, ha.

Silly novelty or a real aid to driving? – Every manufacturer of Hybrids has some novel way of coaxing the Good Driver out of you. Truth is, such visual commentaries on your driving habits work. It’s like competing for a Gold Star at school, it’s irresistible or was I just yearning to be the teacher’s pet?

The permanent flowers take psycological trickery to the next level. Now everybody can see how much of a road angel you are... or not.

All that said, anybody who can afford the $48,450 base price for this mid-size luxury sedan is unlikely to worry about the gas savings enjoyed by driving this latest example of a car with a electric/gas power plant. No, owning a Hybrid of any kind makes more of a statement about your eco-sensitivity, than your need to save cash at the pumps. Only the least expensive Hybrid models make any economic sense and only over a four or five-year period.

U.S. Government regulators estimate the fuel cost of the 2018 MKZ Hybrid FWD, powered by a 245-hp, 2.0L GTDI four-cylinder engine coupled with a 280V Li-Ion electric motor, to be $950US per year (more here, of course). This estimate is based on 15,000 miles driven (approximately 24,000 kms), 55 per cent

city driving and 45 percent highway driving. That’s an average of about 40 miles per US gallon – 5.88 L/100kms in Canadian lingo. Therefore when compared with other similar non-Hybrid vehicles, an owner spends $2,250US less (again, bigger numbers here) over five years.

But let’s get back to the green desirability factor, which is fascinating and tells a bigger story about Hybrids in general, beyond the Lincoln line.

The same U.S. source reports that the sample MKZ therefore consumes about eight barrels of petroleum per year. It emits 222 grams of CO2 per mile, or roughly 3,330,000 grams per year. To put this into perspective, a normal tree absorbs about 21,000 grams of CO2 per year, so it takes about 159 trees to offset these emissions. That’s a lot of apple blossom and Efficiency Leaves!

Yours truly, drove the MKZ down to Seattle and back and therefore did appreciate the gas savings as I didn’t lay out the $62,500 for the test vehicle. Yeah, add a magnificent panoramic roof, tech package, upgraded sound system and those adaptive headlights, with a mind of their own, and the additional ten grand soon grows the price. But I digress.

I’ve seen a number of reviews that describe it as a little sluggish in take-off. Hello, this is a Hybrid not an F1 car. I found the takeoff perfectly fine and it positively purrs at highway speed which does not take an age to reach, believe me.

Forget the Hybrid label and it drives like its fellow luxury marques. It’s quiet, extremely comfortable, has all the audio bells and whistles desired for a concert experience on wheels and loads of trunk room for a major road trip.

While the process of swapping your stock 16-inch wheels for a set of 20-inchers would appear to provide instant handling benefits, that’s not usually the case. Toy Mountain grows with Applewood Auto Group donations

It’s cool to have some metal sitting on the mantel place for guests to see, but it’s more important to enjoy the metal attached to four wheels and a steering wheel on the street. The 2018 Mazda3’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0 L DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder, in the GX and GS model, knows how to get full advantage of its 155 horsepower. Ask for the optional 2.5L engine of the GT version and ye shall receive 184 horses. Power is sent down to the front wheels either through a smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic or a very smooth 6-speed manual, a unit inspired by the go-kart like MX-5 Miata unit.
