A Lake Country couple is saving big on their wedding by bargain hunting and thinking outside the box. Rose Guarnieri and her fiance Jean-François Beaulieu wanted to keep the budget around $10,000 and said finding a venue was one of the biggest challenges. So how did the couple stay within their budget? 6 WINTER 2019

Lots of patience. 1. Shop around for a venue. Finding a suitable venue was challenging for a decent price. Guarnieri wanted it to be held in a backyard setting. The wedding will be held at Okanagan College in Vernon for $750, catering and all the cutlery is included. “I was looking at outdoor spaces and a lot of the vineyards were asking for $5,000 plus… so I was actually going to do it in our backyard,” but the rentals for tables, chairs, linens, salt and pepper shakers were costly, Guarnieri said. 2. Purchase an off-the-rack wedding dress. Guarnieri’s dress, purchased off the rack from Victoria Lane in Vernon, cost $550. She was willing to pay more but found the perfect one by starting below her budget. Off-the-rack sales are a good idea she said, as outlets can find dresses from all over the country. Jean purchased his suit for $250 as part of a sale at Moores. The regular price was $650. 3. As soon as you label rings as “wedding” rings, the price goes up. The couple was able to find something more suitable for their ring style by looking in the clearance section. Beaulieu found his ring in the clearance section for 60 per cent off, for $149, at People’s Jewellers in Kelowna. 4. Use websites and Facebook to create invitations. As a website designer, Beaulieu was able to create a website for free which allowed guests to RSVP. Handwritten letters were delivered to guests for $50 and were printed by Vista Print in Vernon. 5. Find a venue where you can bring your own alcohol. The couple saves money on alcohol by being able to bring their own. While the costs of the drinks at the main events will be provided by the couple, a toonie bar has been set up to offset the cost. “We’re providing all the wine with dinner and at the cocktail reception, and if they want beers or hard liquor they just pay a toonie,” Guarnieri said. 6. Buy local, save money. Guarnieri bought
her flowers from a Sweet Pea Flowery in Lake Country. The freshly picked flowers cost $200 and will be held in collected milk and wine bottles, which the couple will decorate for the event.
cake. It’s a toss-up between a macaroon pile with a little cake on top, or a collection of French pastries from Sandrine French Pastry and Chocolate in Kelowna for Guarnieri.
7. Hiring a band will likely be costly. The band was their biggest expense, but they saved money by hiring Easy Fix, which cost $2,500.
Guarnieri said they went over budget, but the $12,000 includes their honeymoon plane tickets to Paris, which they purchased for $1,281 through a WestJet sale.
8. Get your friends to help out. Wedding photographs and Guarnieri’s makeup were provided as wedding gifts from her friends.
“It was a lot of research and almost like bargain hunting,” she said. The couple were married in August, 2018.
9. Handmake gifts for your guests. Guarnieri will be making shortbread cookies which will cost about 50 cents a person. 10. Choose an unconventional wedding

He has finally proposed? Then your top priority is to tell everyone the good news! Once your initial excitement has calmed down a touch, though, you’ll have to take time to do some serious thinking. There are so many details to plan, a budget to draw up, and deadlines to be met: it seems so overwhelming. If you are finding it hard to get some traction and launch your wedding planning, here are ten tips to give you some direction and help you get moving.

Establish your budget per guest. In fact, this is the perfect time to draw up your guest list.

Book the reception hall. The reception hall is often one of the biggest expenses, so be sure to reserve one as quickly as possible. If you want to keep expenses down, think about holding the reception at a family home or in a garden.
Order your invitations, being careful to include your names, the date, time, and place of the wedding and reception, as well as the date by which you need to receive replies. Being clear about this will help you save a lot of precious time and money. Be sure to include stamped, addressed envelopes if you can.

Make up or order wedding favours for your guests. These are put with their place setting or offered at the end of the reception. Let your imagination run wild: you could offer small homemade soaps, candles, local produce in mini format, bath bombs, or small boxes of candies. It can also be fun to have a “retro” favour, such as a pack of matches with the bride and groom’s names embossed on the matchbook cover.

Book your hair, make-up, esthetician, and manicure appointments several weeks before the wedding. If possible, plan a test run.

Plan the reception down to the last detail: create the atmosphere you like with suitable music, entertainment, and a decor that matches your personality. (Don’t forget to decorate the bathrooms, a place everyone will see at some point!)

Choose a caterer. Creating a good atmosphere is just as important as choosing a caterer, although you don’t want to skimp on food either. To cut costs, consider serving fewer courses, with a focus on excellent quality instead of quantity.

Shop for a wedding gown. Give yourself enough time to find a wedding gown that really suits your personality. It is also possible to rent a dress for the occasion, much as your beloved can buy or rent his tuxedo.
Write wedding vows. Put all your heart into writing down the vows that you would like to make during the marriage ceremony. If you plan to make a speech at the reception, be sure to get that down in writing as well.

Grooms are choosing kilts for their weddings More grooms across the Okanagan are choosing to don a kilt on their big day and the results are stunning.
WORDS: Monique Tamminga PHOTOGRAPHY: McPhail Kilt Makers Amanda and Paul McPhail of McPhail Kilt Makers in Penticton can attest to the kilt craze. “There’s been a huge resurgence in Scotland with 80 per cent of grooms now wearing their family tartan. That has trickled down to North America where lots of Scots live,” said Paul, who moved from Scotland to Penticton as a teenager. “It’s a really classy look,” said Amanda. “We’ve had a lot of couples really happy with the results.” Using the finest wool from Scotland, the McPhails hand-stitch each kilt the way it’s been done for hundreds of years. They trained in Scotland and brought those expertise back to Penticton, opening McPhail Kilt Makers. Since opening two years ago, their unique skillset has been in high demand. A lot of their business has been outfitting pipers, but weddings are quickly taking over, they said. With a custom fit, so many colours to choose and many accessories – it gives a groom a lot of choice in how he wants to look on his wedding day, said Paul. “I’m amazed how guys clean up when they put on a kilt. Everyone looks good in a kilt,” said Paul. But if you aren’t Scottish, can you still wear a kilt? 10 WINTER 2019
“Absolutely,” said Amanda. “There are many tartans people can wear. Canada has its own maple leaf tartan and each province has its own. The kilt is engrained in Canadian culture.” A groom can rent a kilt instead. The McPhails have a full line of rental kilts, jackets and shoes for the groom, groomsmen and family members. A basic rental includes a kilt, a Prince Charlie jacket and vest and shoes called ghillie brogues. At their store they sell everything you need for the full Scottish look -- from socks and sporrans (waist satchels) to kilt pins and sashes. They even have a list of pipers available to play at your wedding. “One piper played Thunderstruck at a wedding last year,” said Paul. There is a lot that goes into wearing a kilt and keeping all its traditions. That’s where the McPhails can walk the groom through how to dress. “For example, the kilt should sit mid-knee,” said Amanda. “The socks are folded just-so and the shoes have very long laces that need to be tied a certain way.” What to wear, or not wear, under the kilt is a matter of personal choice, said the McPhails with a chuckle.
“But if they plan to dance or it’s a windy day, we recommend wearing underwear. But there are always those cheeky guys!” laughed Paul. “When a couple comes here, it’s a full experience from showing them sample tartans and jackets, to helping them pick out their colours, to customizing their outfits,” said Amanda. They have lots of groomsmen gifts as well. If they are making the kilt, they bring in extra fabric so it can be incorporated into the wedding. “The tartan colours can be incorporated into the bouquet or centerpieces and we can also make tartan-laced garters,” she said. Get the most out of bridal shows and wedding events
Recently engaged couples may be excited to get a jump on wedding planning. Bridal shows can be a great way for couples to meet and familiarize themselves with local wedding professionals, all the while introducing themselves to the terminology of wedding planning. • Start small. If the idea of large crowds is unappealing, attend the more intimate, boutique shows that are often held at local reception halls and restaurants instead of the larger installations at convention centers and hotels. • Scout out vendors. Check the bridal show’s website for lists of exhibitors and see if your desired vendors are on the list. But even if they’re not, keep an open mind and use the show as a chance to compare offerings. If an event map is available, marking off must-visit booths can help save time. • Preregister. Preregistering for bridal events saves time at check-in, and doing so may make you eligible for discounted tickets.

Though they’re a great source of information, contacts and samples, bridal shows also can be a bit overwhelming. Learning how to maximize time spent at shows can help couples plan their weddings as efficiently as possible.
• Come prepared. Chances are each vendor is going to ask couples for information so that they can follow up with a phone call or email with more detailed offerings and estimates. Couples attending the show can expediate the process by coming equipped with labels that feature their names, contact information and wedding date. They can then stick the labels on sign-in sheets or use them like business cards.
• Ask questions. When face-to-face with vendors, rely on their expertise but don’t hesitate to ask questions concerning themes, colors, recommendations for honeymoon locations, invitation paper suggestions, and much more.
• Dress comfortably. Bridal expos involve a lot of walking and roaming around. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider a backpack or hands-free bag so you are not weighed down when collecting the swag and other handouts throughout the day.

• Stay for the fashion show. Many shows will offer a runway experience to present the latest gown and tuxedo offerings. This can be an entertaining way for couples to formulate their wedding styles.

A Kelowna business offers an opportunity for men and women to unleash their inner Paul Bunyan and celebrate upcoming nuptials in a safe and fun atmosphere. “That first thunk into the wood just makes you want it more and more,” says Matthew Bibby, the manager of Axe Monkeys, an axe throwing business in Kelowna. “We do everything we can to make it a safe environment with trainers who know all the ins and outs, and different weighted axes for all different level of throwers.” Appealing to all different ages and for all kinds of celebrations, Axe Monkeys started three years ago in Kelowna and has seen the hobby of axe throwing draw more people and all sorts of new crowds. One of those new crowds? The Swedish junior hockey team. They’ll be stopping
in Kelowna for a pre-tournament game at Prospera Arena and some axe throwing at Axe Monkeys. “We get calls from people all over the world when they come to visit,” said Bibby who seemed to be pretty coy about hosting some of the best young hockey players in the upcoming IIHF World Juniors. Axe Monkeys is suitable for anyone, and for any type and size of party, with even a mobile unit available for those who are super passionate about throwing a piece of metal attached to a piece of wood. “Axe throwing is as dangerous as riding a bike in my opinion,” says Bibby. “Our youngest thrower is seven years old and Axe Monkeys can be for everyone. You don’t have to hit the bullseye, or be amazingly skilled, you can just have fun.”

Local vendors are often a go-to choice when couples are planning their wedding ceremonies and receptions. As the “shop local” movement grows in popularity, weddings present a prime opportunity to embrace this movement. Couples may have different ideas regarding where to tie the knot, but local vendors can be hired regardless of geography. Brides magazine says the biggest factor influencing wedding location is the size of the guest list and the number of people

Hometowns might be the traditional choice regarding wedding location, but the XO Group says one in four couples now host destination weddings. Proximity Local vendors can meet with brides and grooms more readily throughout the planning process, making things less stressful on the happy couple. This also makes it easier to drop off deposits, attend meetings, make fitting appointments, or attend styling sessions.
Savings Couples who travel for their weddings and employ local vendors will not have to pack as much. Using local vendors eliminates the need to bring along bulky dresses, decorative items, flowers, and much more. Plus, couples needn’t pay to transport and house vendors brought along from back home.

The experts at Boho Weddings say that, more than ever before, couples are seeking menu ideas that reflect their personalities as a couple as they seek to make a statement at their events. Celebrating with delicious, unique foods can make receptions that much more amazing.
Bite-sized bursts
Tapas and a movement toward small bites has started to take hold at wedding receptions. Such a choice allows guests to try many different flavors without filling up too quickly. From sliders to mini grilled cheese to soup shots to bite-sized pizzas, many of these small bites feature flavors borrowed from familiar comfort foods — just presented on a miniature scale.

Couples can spend months or even years planning their weddings. While planning a wedding requires lots of hard work, couples may also want to give some thought to life beyond their wedding day. One of the more important matters couples must consider is how to manage their finances once they tie the knot. Discussing money can be a tricky issue, particularly when couples have long been accustomed to handling their own accounts and being

Responsibilities of bridal party members Being asked to join a bridal party is both an honor and a responsibility. When asked to take on such significant and meaningful roles, men and women may recognize the honor but be unsure of what their responsibilities are as couples move forward with their wedding plans. Bridal party roles can vary depending on certain circumstances, but many couples still want their bridesmaids and groomsmen to perform many of the more traditional tasks associated with their roles. The following are some of the tasks bridesmaids and groomsmen can expect to perform in the months leading up to the wedding and during the wedding itself.

• Maid of Honor: The maid of honor serves as the bride-to-be’s right-hand woman as she plans her wedding and gets ready on her big day. Maids of honor typically go gown shopping with the bride and may even choose or offer suggestions about the color and style of the bridesmaids’ dresses. Once a dress style and color has been chosen, the maid of honor will make sure everyone is fitted on time. A maid of honor will also plan the bridal shower, sending invitations and arranging for lodging for out-of-town guests if necessary. Many brides want the details of their bridal showers to be a surprise, and maids of honor should honor those sentiments when possible. A maid of honor also plans the bachelorette party, though many brides do not mind being involved in the planning of such parties. The maid of honor may be asked to help address save-the-date cards and envelopes as well. Come the day of the wedding, the maid of honor will ensure the bride’s day is as stress-free as possible, helping to address any last-minute issues that may arise. Maids of honor may be asked to serve as the legal witness to the wedding and sign the wedding license before the reception. At the reception, the maid of honor will toast the bride.

• Best man: The best man is the maid of honor’s counterpart, helping to plan the bachelor party and toasting the groom at the reception. The best man also tends to hold the rings during the wedding ceremony, and during the day of the wedding, he will coordinate the groomsmen to make sure everyone is ready to go on time. The best man may arrange transportation for the groom and groomsmen on the day of the wedding and may also return the groom and groomsman’s attire the following day if the newlyweds are departing on their honeymoons. • Bridesmaids/Groomsmen: The bridesmaids and groomsmen serve similar functions, acting as sources of support as couples plan their weddings. Bridesmaids and groomsmen help to plan the bachelorette and bachelor parties and may also be asked their opinions as couples make decisions regarding their weddings. Bridesmaids and groomsmen must be prepared to take pictures once couples have officially tied the knot. They also must help the brides and grooms with any issues that may arise in the hours before couples become husband and wife.
• Flower girl/Ring bearer: Flower girls and ring bearers are often young relatives of the couple, whether they are a young brother or sister or a niece or nephew. The responsibilities of the flower girl and ring bearer are typically limited to the ceremony, during which they will walk down the aisle, either together or individually, before the father of the bride escorts his daughter to the altar or stage. • Father of the bride: The father of the bride walks his daughter down the aisle during the ceremony, and, along with his wife, may pay for the wedding, though many couples now finance their own nuptials. The father of the bride will dance with his daughter during the reception, and some fathers may even share a special toast for the newlyweds during the reception, though such a toast is not traditionally required. Bridal parties play a big role on couples’ wedding days, and those roles are both an honor and a responsibility.

Wedding unity ceremony ideas Weddings celebrate the joining together of hearts, families and homes. The unification of a couple pledging vows to each other is the key component of the ceremony, and unity rituals are common during both traditional and nontraditional weddings. Unity ceremonies represent the magic of two people coming together as one. Unity rituals may be built into certain religious or cultural weddings as a normal part of the festivities. Other couples may want to embrace the idea of a unity ceremony to add something extra special to their ceremonies. Couples seeking creative options for unity rituals as part of their wedding ceremonies can explore these clever ideas. • Candle lighting: The lighting of a unity candle is one of the more recognizable and traditional unity rituals. During this ritual, the bride and the groom each light an individual candle and then together light a larger candle, which celebrates them coming together as one. • Sand pouring: The pouring of sand into a vessel also is a popular unity ritual. In this ritual, couples choose two sands of different colors and then pour their respective colors into a vessel, allowing the different hues to mix together. This ritual can be expanded to include other family members, with a rainbow of colors blending for a now unified joining of families.
• Tree planting: Planting a tree or shrub that can grow with the marriage is a green idea and one that takes unity rituals to a different level. Couples can place the sapling in a decorative pot and then take turns watering it. Later the tree can be planted outside the couple’s first home. • Lasso ceremony: This ritual is traditional in many Spanish- and Filipino-speaking countries. After vows are exchanged, the officiant wraps a floral garland or rosary around the couple. At the end of the ceremony, the garland is saved as a symbol of unity and love. • Handfasting: This ritual comes from an ancient Celtic tradition that bounds the bride and groom’s right hands together during the wedding ceremony. Handfasting symbolizes couples’ commitments to one another. • Flower ceremony: In this ritual, couples can exchange roses or a favorite flower and then place them in a vase or basket. All members of the family also are invited to place a single flower into the vessel, which ultimately results in a beautiful floral display. Couples can create their own unique unity ceremonies. The blending of any two materials, such as wine, tea, glass beads, or paint, or even the traditional tying of knots will convey the symbolism of joining as one.
• Unity cross: Christians may enjoy a unity cross ritual at their ceremony. A unity cross is a decorative cross with a holder, and the cross is held in place by three pins, which symbolize the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. significant when you’re buying everyday items, but the taxes add up quickly when paying for a wedding. How to incorporate flowers in various ways Weddings are special moments for couples and the guests they invite to share their happiness on their big days. Beautiful weddings require substantial planning, as every last detail must be considered for couples to enjoy the wedding of their dreams. Flowers play a big role in many weddings, and couples can add beauty and ambiance to the event by using floral arrangements in various ways. Modern floral arrangements are stunning, and many couples may not know that herbs, spices and flowers have been used in weddings for centuries. Today, flowers are used to decorate wedding venues, impart sweet fragrances and complement formal attire, but in ancient times they were used differently. Flowers were used to bestow good luck on the couple and keep bad omens away. Brides carried aromatic flowers and spices to keep evil spirits from spoiling the festivities, and some even tucked bulbs of garlic into their bouquets. In ancient Greece and Rome, both the bride and groom wore garlands made out of strong-smelling herbs flowers around their necks or heads. These wreaths were considered gifts of nature, and thus extremely appropriate for a wedding. Traditionally, bridesmaids would be responsible for fashioning these floral components. In ancient Sweden, young girls would carry small bouquets of fragrant herbs down the aisle and the groom would put thyme in his pocket. These aromatics were thought to help keep trolls at bay.

Besides warding off spirits or hungry trolls, flowers also served more practical purposes throughout history. During the Middle Ages, people bathed less frequently than they do today. Bathing might only have occurred twice a year, once during summer and then again at Christmastime. Because many weddings took place in the spring, flowers were used to mask bodily odors. Not only were flowers and herbs carried, but they also would be sewn into clothing. Modern brides and grooms may no longer see their wedding days as times for opportunistic evil spirits. But that doesn’t mean that couples cannot borrow from ancient traditions and incorporate flowers into their weddings in various ways.

• Wreaths and garlands: Ask the florist to weave small flower buds, berries and vines to a headband, wreath or piece of twine so that the bride and groom can wear these flowers in the way they were worn by ancient Greeks and Romans. When coupled with Grecian-styled wedding gowns, brides can look like beautiful goddesses on their wedding days. • Fragrant favors: Tuck dried rose petals and other fragrant flowers into sachets that are embroidered with the wedding date and couple’s names. Guests can use these sachets to keep clothings smelling fresh in drawers or as subtle air fresheners around the house. • Edible flowers: Ask the caterer to make meals flower-friendly by including some edible blooms in the salad or as a garnish on meals.
• Raining petals: In lieu of bubbles or birdseed, guests can shower the newlyweds with rose petals after the ceremony. • Memorial: Some couples like to honor departed family members. Floral arrangements with small placards can make for fitting memorials.
