The annual Live Nativity and Christmas Carols took place on Sunday at Carrington House in Mission. Members of the Mission Donkey and Mule Club, their family and friends all came together to present the scene featuring angels, shepherds, wise men and, of course, Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus. An assortment of animals, including sheep and a donkey, added realism to the scene. During the event, the Christmas story was read, interspersed with carols. After the event, several seniors came out to pet the animals.

The national organization Days for Girls Canada (DFGC) has opened a new chapter in Mission.

The group creates Days for Girls kits that help women have access to sustainable feminine hygiene. One of the major causes of disempowerment of girls and women in poverty is their monthly cycle. Many girls cannot afford feminine hygiene products and, as a result, cannot attend schools. A girl absent from school due to menstruation for four days of every 28-day cycle loses 13 learning days – the equivalent of two weeks of learning every school term.

Volunteers provide their time, skills, sewing machines and often fabric from their stashes, but donations are also needed to purchase the other kit supplies – quality flannel, broadcloth, thread, ribbon, underwear, washcloths, soap, sealable bags and postage.

The local group is seeking volunteers of all ages, from seniors to teens.

We asked the organizers some questions about the new group. Here are their answers: How can I impact the lives of others in a meaningful way?

Get involved in Days for Girls Mission.

We have sewing parties at least once a month and socialize with some really great people through an amazing non-profit organization that has been growing around the world for 10 years and has placed over one million sustainable feminine hygiene kits to girls in need.

Why is it called Days for Girls?

Our group efforts give days back to girls. In many developing countries, women cannot afford feminine hygiene products. During their menses they cannot attend schools or work for about five days every month. That’s two weeks of learning every school term, which means they often

can’t compete in critical exams and end up dropping out. Providing sustainable feminine hygiene kits gives these days back.

Do I need to know how to sew to attend?

Not at all. There is a job for every skill level with DFGC. Volunteers of all ages gather and socialize while we sew, cut and iron for a purpose. Some of our volunteers have health challenges and DFGC gives them a way to make a real difference in the world even though they may be physically limited from more traditional volunteer methods.

How can I get involved?

Follow the Facebook page and attend any of the events posted. All are welcome and you do not have to have a machine. There is a lot more information on the Facebook page and more details about how to contribute.

You can even donate directly from the link to Canada Helps. Be sure to choose Mission BC chapter and your donation will go directly to buying supplies for the kits sewn locally.

WHAT CAUSES LOW BACK PAIN? There are many reasons that can cause low back pain. These include muscular pain, referred pain, nerve pain or due to a psychiatric illness. The most common cause is using your back muscles in activities you’re not used to, such as lifting heavy objects or twisting your back unexpectedly.

Most of these are mechanical causes, such as: • Sprain, strain, herniated disc, osteoarthritis, compression fracture etc.

These conditions have pain which is worse with movement and better with rest.

Rarely these are due to non-mechanical causes, such as: • osteoporosis, infections such as osteomyelitis, cancer, and even referred pain from pancreatitis, etc.

So now we know that most common causes of low back pain are reversible and not serious. So, the good news is that it can be prevented by learning how to improve your posture and exercising.

WHEN IS LOW BACK PAIN SERIOUS? Some symptoms to look out for which may require a visit to your doctor right away are: • pain goes down your leg, especially below your knee.

• you have fever, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain.

• your pain was caused by an injury.

• your pain is so intense you can’t move around.

• your pain doesn’t seem to be getting better after 2 to 3 weeks.

DO I NEED IMAGING? When your doctor is taking history and examining you, he/she is ruling out serious conditions which might need further intervention. Usually imagining is not needed initially because it does not change the management anyways.

You may need imaging such as spine X-ray/CT scan in cases such as: • no improvement after 6 weeks • high grade fever • significant trauma • history of cancer • progressive neurological deficit

HOW CAN I TREAT MY BACK PAIN? Taking 1 to 2 days of rest can help with your pain, but resting longer than this can actually make your muscles to become weak and slow the recovery.

After 1-2 days, continue your usual activities as tolerated, hastening for better recovery.

The best position to relieve your pain is to lie on your back on the floor with pillows under your knees, with your hips and knees bent. This takes the pressure and weight off your back.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO FOR RELIEF? Initially ice packs can be helpful, but alternating heating pads and ice packs on a regular basis can be helpful.

Over the counter (OTC) medications that reduce pain and inflammation are quite helpful as well. These include Tylenol, Naproxen and Ibuprofen.

WHAT CAN I DO IN THE LONG RUN FOR MY BACK PAIN? Regular physical exercise, losing weight (if you are overweight) and most of all improving your posture when you are sitting, standing and sleeping can help relieve and also prevent the pain in the long run.

Other options that may help some people include acupuncture, massage therapy and yoga.

The old saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is true for low back pain as well. Thus, lifestyle interventions such as maintaining a good posture and exercising regularly helps prevent chronic disability in many people with low back pain.

Quilt Donations to TRIM

PieceMakers Quilters meet on Mondays at Lifetime Learning Centre Society to work on projects for contributions to our community.

They have recently donated a series of 14 quilts to TRIM residents.

GET INVOLVED in the REASON for Season VOLUNTEER For those wishing to volunteer there will be two shifts to choose from. Our first shift is from 1pm–3pm which will be set-up and supper service. The second shift will be from 3pm–5pm which will be serving dessert and clean-up. The doors open to serve at 2pm and we wrap up our time with our guests by 4pm! Please let me know what shift works for you by email, as that is our main source of communication. This year we would like to invite our volunteers to dress up in the “Christmas Spirit” to add some extra Christmas Cheer to the day!

DONATE To make the meal happen we need the of the following items: Turkey, Potatoes, Ham, Frozen or Canned Vegetables, Gravy Mix, Coffee, Tea and Hot Chocolate Mix, Sugar, Coffee Cream, Butter, Pies/Cookies/Cakes (Dessert), Christmas Candy, Salty Snacks, Pretzels, Chips, Nuts, Crackers, Cranberry Sauce, Whipped Whip Cream, Door Prize Gifts ($10–$20 range), Gift cards or cash would also be appreciated for purchasing last minute meal items... :) This year we hope to raise funds to give each guest a $10 gift card... our goal would be to raise $1500–$2000!

HOW TO IMPROVE

Circulation In perfectly healthy bodies, blood, oxygen and nutrients circulate throughout the body without issue. However, several conditions, including obesity and diabetes, can contribute to poor circulation, which is not a standalone condition but rather a byproduct of another serious health issue.

When the circulatory system is not working at optimal capacity, people may experience tingling, numbness and throbbing or stinging pain in the limbs. Pain and muscle cramps also may result from poor circulation, the symptoms of which vary depending on the causes. For example, someone whose circulation issues are a result of peripheral artery disease may experience different symptoms than someone whose circulation has been compromised by diabetes.

Because issues affecting the circulatory system are complex, it’s important for men and women to learn how to address such issues if they suspect their systems have been compromised.

Visit your physician.

Poor circulation results from various health issues, so people who think they are dealing with poor circulation should not try to address the issue on their own. Rather, the best way to improve circulation is to visit a physician the moment you note a symptom. Doctors will confirm if patients are experiencing circulation issues and diagnose what’s causing those issues.

Doctors also will work with their patients to devise a course of treatment for the issue that’s causing their poor circulation.

Lose weight and keep it off.

Obesity is one of the conditions that can contribute to poor circulation. So many people who are diagnosed with poor circulation may be advised to lose weight and keep the weight off once it’s been lost. A healthy diet that includes fish like salmon that is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to improve circulation, can help people lose weight and maintain healthy weights going forward.

A low-impact exercise, yoga can compress and decompress veins, potentially improving circulation. It takes time to master yoga positions, but even beginners who cannot fully perform poses during a yoga regimen can benefit from doing the exercises to the best of their abilities.
