Creating holiday memories

nce, many years ago now, it was a few days before Christmas and I found myself rushing up and down the aisles of a grocery store in a joyous consumer frenzy as I plucked oncea-year specialty items from the shelves, reciting the mantra “’tis the season!”

My buggy grew more and more full, and as I passed the poultry section, I tossed a turkey onto the pile. And then I stopped. I’d never, ever cooked a turkey — rarely eat poultry — and both my daughters are vegetarians. Why on earth would I buy a turkey? Sheepishly, I put it back.

In the midst of all the seasonal buying chaos, I try to remember that it’s often the little things — the eggnog and not the turkey-that-I-can’t-cook — that are most momentous at this time of year.

This will be the second year my family has chosen to not exchange gifts. It has become too expensive and timeconsuming for our four mid-20s offspring and their partners. So while I’m not actually purchasing gifts right now, I find myself thinking about the process. And each time I reach into the memory bank, I pull out something that proves some of the best gifts are the simple, unexpected ones.

Years ago, when I was a cash-strapped single mom, my younger daughter had a fervent attachment to a pair of OshKosh overalls that had been handed down to her from a family friend. (This is the daughter who once adopted a shop vac

as a “pet” — so strange attachments weren’t all that strange.) By the time Christmas rolled around, the overalls were threadbare and she was heartbroken at their imminent demise. I looked everywhere for a reasonably-priced replacement pair, scouring secondhand stores, sales racks and even giving in to the fact I’d probably need to fork out the cash for a brand new pair.

But just days before Christmas, I was giving one last used clothing store a perusal and there it was: a one-off, brand new, tag-still-on-it pair of OshKosh overalls in exactly the right size. A Christmas miracle! And of all the gifts I’ve given over the years, that one stands out.

My daughters created their own unique gift-giving tradition. They, who both have magnificent, long manes of golden curly hair, spent years presenting each other with ... wigs. These wigs, usually plucked from vintage or costume shops, have

ranged from blond to pink to black, and curly to straight to tangled tresses.

One year, my younger daughter, who was time-crunched amidst an overwhelming school program, didn’t manage to purchase a wig gift for her sister. So she crept down to the tree on Christmas Eve while the rest of us slept, found the package containing the wig her sister had bought for her and placed her own tag on it. Christmas dawned and my elder daughter ended up opening the wig gift that she herself had placed under the tree. Again, the parade of wigs over the years blend together in my mind — but that memory stands out.

ust across the highway into West Sidney is a hidden gem that is a must-stop for any carnivore with an abiding love of succulent bacon, locally raised ham, smoked sausages or salamis, all made with utmost care in traditional European fashion.

Four Quarters Meats, at 205-2031 Malaview Avenue West, owned and operated by Geoff Pinch, is both a wholesaler and retailer, supplying an array of restaurants, catering companies and specialty shops throughout the Peninsula and the entire Victoria area.

“More and more throughout the industry, people are appreciating the artisanal quality,” says Geoff, and his selection of products certainly reflects that.

The shelves at Four Quarters Meats are varied and oh so tempting.

Local pork from Omnivore Acres gets cut into chops, dried sausages, a whole range of specialty cured meats and even a selection of Christmas hams — be sure to get your name down now if you want one for the holidays.

Smoked sausages range from southern chorizo to a kielbasa flavoured with garlic, nutmeg and marjoram, to turkey cranberry with rosemary, and Andouille Cajun sausage with thyme, allspice, garlic and black pepper.

There’s bacon and cottage rolls and smoked beef. Asian duck sausages. Bratwurst and blood pudding sausages. It’s enough to make a carnivore light-headed with delight. Perhaps the spot where Four Quarters really shines, though, is in the selection of dry-cured salamis.

He has a passion for taking his time and creating the best product possible, perhaps influenced by seeing small scale and local food producers and butchers from a very young age.

Vancouver, surrounded by dozens of cultures and languages, where he learned traditional European methods for curing salamis.

Amidst the rest of the already sought-after meat selection, the salamis have found welcoming homes with many of Victoria’s high-end chefs.

“I came from the restaurant world, and there are a lot of great chefs keen on doing these things,” says Geoff. “It’s nice to make them, but it’s also great to have that connection with them. We’re making the products that, if they had the time and space, they would be making.”

He has a passion for taking his time and creating the best product possible, perhaps influenced by seeing small scale and local food producers and butchers from a very young age.

Geoff grew up surrounded by small game and livestock, thanks to a hobby farmer mom and two sisters in 4H. “We had rabbits, chickens, lambs, the odd pig,” he says. “I remember going to the local butcher, the abattoir. It was just normal to me.”

Now, Geoff works with myriad local farmers, including a number of folks on the smaller islands.

“We do a fair bit of custom cutting and processing,” he says, noting they send back the finished products for the farms to sell.

This February marks five years for the shop, and it’s hit a good balance between having enough supply as a wholesaler and keeping the quality impeccably high.

“It’s hard to be a wholesaler when you’re little,” he says, adding that wholesaling was the primary reason he chose the spot in the more industrial West Sidney. But the shop hit the ground running, and soon had relationships with a number of restaurants and specialty shops throughout Victoria.

“Irish Times has almost been partners with us,” he laughs.

Now, he’s got a staff of three (Brian, Marty and Shawn) as well as his wife Sally, who acts as a “behind-the-scenes partner,” he adds with a smile.

“I’ve been really lucky with the staff I’ve got,” he adds.

As the business has increased, he’s added a new staff member just about every year, and it’s grown into a tight-knit team.

With the holidays (and all their glorious celebration of food) just around the corner, the conversation turns to favourites in store. Though Four Quarters Meats supplies quite a few spots nearby – The Farmer’s Daughter, 10 Acres Farm, The Roost, The Butchart Gardens — for the best selection this side of the

Root Cellar, the shop on Malaview is the best place to go. It has some great grab-and-go options if you’ve got family and friends coming over for the holidays. (And honestly, just get a box for yourself even if you don’t plan on company. You won’t regret it.)

The breakfast box has all the morning classics: bacon, sausages, ham. Everything ready to go for a hearty morning. Break out your frying pan and try not to finish it all off in one sitting. For later in the day, the charcuterie box has a variety of pre-sliced cured meats, salamis and smoked sausages.

“It’ll have all your entertaining cheese and cracker type things,” says Geoff.

Asked what he personally recommends, and he offers up three suggestions: the Spanish dried chorizo, the chicken liver pate, and the Lemon Drop salami, flavoured with lemon zest, sweet white wine and fennel seed. And if you’ve got something special in mind, give the shop a call at 250.508.7654. The team regularly does custom orders. M

y car curves along a quiet country road as I make my way towards Deep Cove.

This region of the Saanich Peninsula has always offered me respite and a sense of calm from my busy, dayto-day life. A pleasant breeze that carries notes of the nearby Salish Sea greets me as I arrive at my destination: Deep Cove Winery.

Set on three acres of land that has been growing grapes for 18 years, and landlocked between Horth Hill Regional Park and Deep Cove, the winery is protected from extreme wind. It is the warmest pocket with ley soil land in the region — making it an idyllic spot for ripening grapes.

While the land itself has a bit of a legacy in the region, the winery was purchased by husband-andwife team Tasem and Elyse Ramaden in 2017 and has undergone some significant changes under their ownership.

“The winery was on the market and we played around with the idea. We went back and forth on it for months and eventually decided to take a chance to build our lives here,” Elyse explains.

The couple previously lived in Sidney with their two young children. At the time, Elyse was on maternity leave from her job as a psychiatric nurse and Tasem, who is originally from New York, had recently completed a degree in biochemistry.

“My husband had just finished his degree and was volunteering with Victoria Distillers and really got into [the work there]. And we really wanted to stay on the Peninsula. We talked it over with my parents and they were very supportive. They are just five minutes up the road. We needed family support if we were to take it on,” says Elyse.

“IT’S A STEEP LEARNING CURVE, BUT IT’S REALLY REWARDING. YOU HAVE ONE CHANCE TO MAKE WINE. IT’S ONCE A YEAR AND YOU HAVE TO DO IT RIGHT. MAKING WINE IS ABOUT DEDICATION, CREATIVITY AND TIME.” Elyse and Tasem moved their family into the house that is on the winery land in June 2017. They started extensive renovations to the winery and held a grand reopening in June of this year.

I had visited the previous winery several years ago, and as Elyse and Tasem tour me around the newly designed space, I’m impressed with the changes. Only the layout remains the same — the grand tasting room, extensive event area with vaulted ceilings and a picturesque vineyard terrace.

The space is now clean, white and modern with rustic, west coast elements, including cedar beams and locally mined black marble. The wine cellar is reminiscent of an ancient cellar in the French countryside, with one wall featuring the same locally sourced marble seen throughout the tasting room and event space above.

“We were doing the renovations with two young kids, while making wine,” recalls Tasem. “We’re putting everything into this.

A lot of people romanticize owning a winery, but it’s hard work.

It’s farming at the end of the day.”

The couple hired a renowned wine consultant from France to assist them in their new venture. He has taught Tasem everything from caring for the grapes to designing an impeccable variety of wines.

“It’s a steep learning curve, but it’s really rewarding,” Tasem says. “You have one chance to make wine. It’s once a year and you have to do it right. Making wine is about dedication, creativity and time.”

Elyse and Tasem are committed to maintaining a small production focussed on quality. All of the small lot, hand-crafted wines are produced on site.

“Everyone in the family helps with harvesting the grapes; even the kids love to help. They are the perfect height to pick grapes but they also eat them,” Tasem says with a laugh. “The community has also been so supportive of us. We have been selling out of wines. People are loving it.”

Elyse adds, “We have been so humbled and excited by people’s reception. Their reactions and excitement to our wine has been incredible.”

Deep Cove Winery sells its wines exclusively at the winery and the neighbouring Deep Cove Chalet restaurant. And while the couple intends to keep production small, the two plan to make the winery a big part of the local community. Elyse and Tasem have hosted a variety of events — including paint nights and a yoga series — with the intention of drawing the community together.

“It’s a village here. We have so much support. It motivates us to keep going and have this be a place where everyone in the community can come and gather. That motivates us to have

local events. We want to be a place to host people. It makes our community stronger and healthier,” says Tasem.

A

grand vision helps set Peninsula-based artist Archie Andrew aside from other gifted artists. Although he is prolific — having made hundreds of art pieces, including four totem poles — he’s recently set his goal higher. He is planning a canoe far bigger than any ever built before by the West Coast Indigenous people. It’s an ambitious project but Archie has the vision and skill to achieve it.

We’re sitting on the porch of the house where Archie, a painter and carver of the Tsartlip First Nation, is temporarily renting a flat. A large cedar eagle, looking noble with its wings slightly spread, dominates the table even though it is still unfinished. Archie shows me several other pieces, including a bear plaque painted in bold red and

black, and a rattle in the shape of an eagle, all of which boast fine lines and imaginative designs.

Archie is a fit-looking 44-year-old with a dark moustache, goatee and black hair pulled into a ponytail. Although soft-spoken, his eyes reflect a confident determination. He grew up on the Tsartlip reserve near Brentwood Bay, embedded in Saanich’s Indigenous culture. Archie speaks the SENĆOŦEN language, although he quickly adds, “not very well.”

But he showed a talent and interest for art from an early age, and made drawings for his classmates. He sold his first piece at age 20.

He was guided by two respected carvers, Charles Elliott and Doug LaFortune, and trained with Floyd Joseph for six years, often carving entire days.

“Art is the backbone of my life, and it has kept me out of trouble,” he says.

I can see from the pieces on the table and from pictures he shows me on his cell phone that he has abundant creativity and skill.

Archie moved around the province for 17 years, teaching Native art in the BC school system. During this time, he continued pursuing carving and painting. He makes his own tools and knives, and has produced numerous works. His pieces were regularly displayed at the Turtle Island Gallery in Kelowna until it closed. His favourite piece is a large, killer-whale helmet, which is about two feet tall with the dorsal fin, and is worn on the head.

Most recently, he designed the logo for the World Rowing Coastal Championships held in Sidney in October. It is called “Spirit of the Killer Whale” and shows three stylized orcas with the Orca Spirit in the blow holes.

“Killer whales live in the waters next to the Saanich Peninsula and play a significant role in Tsartlip culture,” he says. “Orcas are powerful.

They respect family, and work well together. Thus, they are good representatives for the rowing teams in their races.”

At present, Archie’s future is unclear, bound in mist. To support his carving and painting, he has a part-time job here, but he misses his 18-month-old daughter, Mara, who lives in Bella Coola. And he adds, “It’s hard to get good cedar here.”

Although Archie is prolific, he presently has no studio or commercial outlets. He depends on word of mouth and private sales. His work can be seen on his FaceBook page, Westwind Carvings, and he is developing a website at westwindcarvingsaa.com.

Our conversation turns to his grand vision — a monumental canoe that is 100 feet long, has two 60-foot outriggers and can hold up to 100 paddlers. Loo Taas, the famous canoe built by Bill Reid, for example, is large at 50 feet, but still smaller than one of Archie’s envisioned outriggers.

“My great-great-grandmother inspired this vision,” Archie explains.

“She came from Hawaii and must have travelled in a boat similar to this.”

Archie plans to construct scale models first, and has already found a site where he can build the full-size canoe. He announced his visionary canoe at the World Rowing Coastal Championships and hopes to attract fellow craftsmen and supporters.

Leaving, I sense Archie’s quiet determination and feel that with his lofty goal, he is an artist apart. I wish him the best in transforming his dream into reality … and silently hope that one day I can be a paddler in his giant canoe. P

ast aside the image of Buffalo as a run-down, rust-belt city, for it has made a miraculous transformation. Its grand architecture, revitalized waterfront, great eats and culture now rival the best and, as I discovered, it’s a great place to visit.

Back in the late 1800s, Buffalo rivalled New York as the grandest city in the land. Thanks to the Erie Canal it became the “Gate-

way to the West” with grain elevators punctuating the skyline and its stockyards second only to those of Chicago. Steel, car and soap industries thrived using cheap energy from nearby Niagara Falls. Grand buildings and parks designed by leading architects sprouted in those heady days.

In recent years, architectural gems have been restored and former industrial complexes and public buildings turned into hotels, restaurants,

breweries and art centres. A standout is Martin House, one of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s best works. With its open-ended budget, designing the residential complex was a dream for Wright. Finished in 1905, it later fell into neglect but was re-opened in 2017. I loved examining the furniture, a long pergola, stained-glass windows and detailed woodwork.

Hotel Henry, constructed in a grand, sprawling style with towers and turrets in 1871, once operated as an asylum for the insane, and is now a National Historic Landmark. Recently refurbished, it’s one of the most unusual resorts in the country, featuring a labyrinth of grand spaces and perhaps a ghost or two.

Dominated by a gigantic six-pack of Labatt Blue beer cans (painted former grain silos), River Works is impossible to miss. An ingenious repurposing of a derelict area, the enormous recreational facility contains a brewery, restaurant, bars, hockey rink, roller derby and more. I quaffed an ale while watching rock climbing on a silo wall, zip-lining from silo to silo and kayaking on the Buffalo River. This area rocks!

Next, I explored Buffalo’s Cultural Corridor at the north end of the trendy Elmwood Village. The Burchfield Penney Art Center offers a wide selection of art and works featuring the Buffalo and Niagara region. I enjoyed the collection of Charles E. Burchfield, an esteemed watercolourist and landscape painter.

Across the street, I entered the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, which opened in 1862, and is one of the oldest — and best — public arts institutions in the United States.

Curatorial fellow Andrea Alvarez said, “We’re a smaller gallery but can hang with the big ones.”

We passed paintings by Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Pissaro and Jackson Pollock’s enormous Convergence. I was overwhelmed by the number of tall Roman-style columns.

“Only the US Capital in Washington has more columns than here,” Andrea said.

Next, I strolled into Delaware Park, which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, an outstanding landscape architect, in 1868-1870. On the shore of a picturesque lake crowded with boats, I imagined the celebrations and fireworks exploding over the lake during the 1901 Pan-American Exposition when Buffalo was at its zenith. I wasn’t surprised that Delaware Park is considered among the world’s top 10 parks.

At the park’s eastern side, I found the Buffalo Zoo, established in 1875, and wandered past tigers and chimpanzees. The jostling crowds were proof that the zoo remains among the most popular tourist attractions in Buffalo.

History embraced me again at the Buffalo History Museum, which evokes the Parthenon in Athens and is another National Historic Land-

mark. It was built for the 1901 Pan-American Exposition, attended by eight million people, and, sadly, where President McKinley was assassinated. Whereas all other exposition buildings were torn down, this building was preserved.

At the lively Larkin Square, past and present converge.

Formerly the site of the Larkin Soap Company, the square now hosts numerous events such as Food Truck Tuesdays, live musicians and more. I tapped my foot as I munched on a gigantic burrito.

Another symbol of Buffalo’s creative resurgence is the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum, opened in 2001. I learned that Buffalo was prominent in America’s early automotive history; the Pierce Arrow Motor Car Company manufactured innovative cars used by presidents and royals. The museum’s artifacts include the Buffalo Filling Station designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and a 1932 Duesenberg, one of the most expensive cars ever built — with its interior controls gilded in gold.

With the sun sinking, I ambled through Elmwood Village’s boutique shops and galleries. At Coles Pub (established 1934), I sipped a locally brewed Flying Bison ale as my bar neighbour described the endless cuisine possibilities, the thriving entertainment district and the excitement of Elmwood Bidwell Farmers’ Market.

Wiping foam from my lip, I was happy that Buffalo was successfully regaining its gloried past, and I was already planning my return. P
