After a slow start, things are about to get hectic at the Mission Christmas Bureau.

Fortunately, a strong team of volunteers is prepared for the challenge of helping those in need this holiday season.

One of those volunteers is 81-year-old Shirley DiPrimo.

This is DiPrimo’s first year with the Christmas Bureau, but she has a long history of volunteering in this community and others.

“I do volunteer with TRIM (The Residence In Mission). I go on bus trips and to dinners and I did help with bingo there. I have done volunteering since about 1972,” DiPrimo said.

Most of her volunteering has come with ANAVETS – the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans group.

When she moved to Mission in 2012, DiPrimo immediately began searching for a local cause to volunteer with.

“I had to find something because I’m not a home, home person.”

But why does she dedicate so much of her time to volunteerism?

“Well, I grew up in foster car – that wasn’t very nice – back in West Vancouver, way back, when I was six years old.”

When she was in Grade 10, her foster family decided to move to California, but DiPrimo wanted to stay in B.C. She remained in Vancouver, eventually studying practical nursing.

“But I got married and had five children in six years so I was a stay-at-home mom until I lost my husband in 1974.”

DiPrimo started working as a janitor at the Vancouver International Airport and left there 18 years later.

That’s when she got involved in the ANAVETS. “We did this kind of thing every Christmas. We made hampers and delivered them to people’s homes. I just have to be with people. I’m not a stay at home one-on-one person.

“Because I have been in the place where most of these people are – I’ve never had to stay on the street but it came close – and if it wasn’t for the help of a couple of people ... that’s what got me a little more outgoing. So I wanted to be doing things for other people – that’s what life is about.”

DiPrimo actually tried to work with the Christmas Bureau two years ago, but she said she never got a call back.

Last year she was set to volunteer again, except her new husband became sick and she needed to care for him.

“This year I was determined that I would be here, to hear the stories because I know the feelings these people have when they receive help and it takes a lot of courage to ask for help.”

DiPrimo is serious about her volunteering. She is at the Christmas Bureau six days a week, usually from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and she’ll work until the bureau closes for the season.

“It makes you feel useful and makes you feel needed.”

Christmas Bureau leader Mika Brosseau said they would not be successful without volunteers, and DiPrimo is one of the best.

“Shirley is amazing. She is so busy.

Absolutely wonderful.”

Frank Federici and his wife MaryAnn on their wedding day and today.

Frank Federici and Dave Buker celebrated their joint 90th birthdays on Nov. 17 with friends and family.

Both Frank and Dave are deeply rooted in Mission, as both of their parents were farmers in the Dewdney area.

Frank had one sibling, his sister Marion.

Marion Federici married Dave Buker in 1949. The next year Frank married MaryAnn Schneider.

Dave Buker and his wife Marion on their wedding day and today.

Ironically, both Frank and Dave were born on the same day and the same year – Nov. 17, 1928.

Frank and MaryAnn had three sons and three daughters and Dave and Marion had five daughters.

All 11 children were present to help celebrate.

THE

There are over 100 different types of arthritis affecting all races, genders, and ages, caused by various mechanisms, but the most common type of arthritis affecting many adults is osteoarthritis. It causes long-term disability in adults due to pain and altered joint function.

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS? The place where 2 bones meet is normally covered with a rubbery material called cartilage.

It was previously thought to be due to simply “wear and tear” of the joint cartilage, but it is now known that it is much more complex than that. The term osteoarthritis has “itis” which means inflammation. There is inflammation of the joints which is followed by loss of the articular cartilage and abnormal bone formation which causes the symptoms.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Symptoms are gradual and take months to years to develop.

• Initially, people usually get minimal morning stiffness in the affected joints.

• As the disease progresses, it is followed by stiffness and pain in the joints with activity.

• There is usually bony enlargement, crepitus with movement and limitation of motion.

Almost any joint can be involved but it most commonly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine.

WHO IS AT RISK OF GETTING OSTEOARTHRITIS? There are multiple risk factors that may cause osteoarthritis. These are: • Previous injury to the joint • Repeated stress on the joint • Overweight • Family history • Older age WHAT CAN I DO TO IMPROVE THE SYMPTOMS? Some steps you can do to prevent symptoms from getting worse are: • Rest for several minutes when your pain is at the worst.

• Lose weight (if you are overweight) • Physical therapy and exercise to strengthen the muscles • Use shoe inserts, splints, canes, etc. to help your joints with stability WHY IS EXERCISING BENEFICIAL IN OSTEOARTHRITIS? Many people with arthritis do not exercise often because of joint pain or weakness, but it can be broken down into two to four 10-minute sessions per day to avoid too much discomfort.

• Moving your joints everyday through a full range of motion can maintain flexibility and slow deterioration of cartilage. If your knees are affected, bend and extend them as far as you comfortably can.

• Strengthening exercises can be helpful as strong muscles help protect the painful joints and maintain balance, thus preventing falls.

• Low impact activities such as biking, swimming and tai chi are very helpful.

HOW CAN I PROTECT MY JOINTS WHILE EXERCISING? • Walk on flat, level surfaces.

• Wear supportive footwear such as athletic shoes with good cushioning to reduce impact on your hips and knees.

• Listen to your body and never ignore pain. A sign that you have exercised too much is that your joint hurts longer than 2 hours.

• Pay attention to posture and alignment WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE? As there is no cure for osteoarthritis, the treatment goals are to: reduce pain, maintain joint mobility, and limit functional disability. Some options include: • Some medicines help reduce the pain and some help reduce the swelling.

These include pills, creams and gels that you can put on your skin to reduce pain. There are steroid injections you can get in your joints to help with pain as well.

• There is no strong evidence that any supplements help with the arthritis, including glucosamine and chondroitin.

• When other treatment options are not helping, some people benefit from getting a surgery such as getting a surgery to replace a knee or a hip.

1. Preheat the oven to 350 °F (175 °C) 2. Using a hand mixer or a whisk, blend the butter and sugars.

3. Add the vanilla and almond extracts as well as the egg. Mix well.

4. Add the flour, baking soda and salt slowly until the dough is smooth.

5. Stir in the while chocolate chips and dried cranberries.

6. Make balls with about two tablespoons of dough, and place 5 centimetres apart on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

7. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until light brown.

8. Let cool at least 5 minutes before serving.

Don’t leave your home looking unoccupied. Don’t announce trips away from home on social media. Arrange to have newspaper deliveries stopped while you’re away, and have someone pick up the mail and mow the lawn (or shovel the snow).

Prevent falls. Make sure all your rooms and stairways are well lit and that things aren’t left lying around on the floor. Remove area rugs and use assistive devices (a cane and grab bars in the bathroom).

Manage your medications appropriately. Clean out your medicine cabinet regularly. Never take more than the prescribed dose of a medication, and don’t take any over-the-counter drugs or natural products before talking to your doctor or pharmacist. Use a pill organizer to stay on track with doses.

Think “fire safety.” Install a smoke detector on each floor and near all the bedrooms.

Don’t leave a hot stove unattended. Don’t smoke in bed, and avoid using candles.

Be prudent when driving. Lock car doors even when you’re in the car. Park in well-lit parking lots, and take out your keys in advance so you can get into the house or car quickly. Avoid driving for long periods of time or when visibility is poor.

Prevent fraud. Don’t sign a contract without having it checked by a lawyer. Never lend your credit card or give out personal information (address, date of birth, SIN, credit card number, etc.) over the Internet or phone, unless it was you who initiated the call.

Protect your property and your assets. Sign a proxy giving a person you trust the power to make decisions on your behalf regarding your assets and your healthcare when necessary. Have a will drawn up, and don’t keep large sums of cash in your home.

Secure your home. Have an alarm system and good locks installed, and always lock your doors. Install a peephole so you can see your visitors without being seen before opening the door.

Be prepared for emergencies such as a fall or an illness. Keep a list of emergency numbers in a conspicuous place. Make a list of people to contact in case you need help, especially people who are close by or are readily available. Find out about emergency response systems such as wearable alert buttons.

Use all necessary assistive devices. Look into getting a walker, a large-keypad phone, a doorbell indicator light, and a cell phone that you can keep with you at all times. Use a calendar and checklists to help you remember important things.
