Honda ODYSSEY defines Minivan Market

While crossovers and SUVs have literally taken over the automotive industry, there are still many situBY DAVID CHAO ations in which minivans play an important role. In fact, there is no better “efficient” and easy way to carry multiple passengers and loads of cargo than minivans - despite attempt by many car companies to introduce minivan-like large SUVs. Simply put, minivans may no longer be popular, but they are still the best way to carry group of people in utmost comfort.

As the LX trim is bare bones, I would highly recommend a trim level from EX and up.

The Honda Odyssey minivan carries over into 2019 with no major changes because it was completely redesigned in 2018. The interior is upscale and well-designed with plenty of room for people and cargo. Specifically, there is a large space below the centre stack for big handbags and the centre storage bin can swallow even larger bags. There are cupholders everywhere to ensure all passengers have access to hydration. Just as expected for a minivan, cargo space is sitting plenty at 4103 L (158 cubic feet) when 2nd-row seats are removed and 3rd-row seats are flat. The Odyssey seats up to eight people easily and in relative comfort.

Truly a family-oriented vehicle, the Odyssey features many family-friendly options like CabinWatch, which is an 8-inch display that allows you to monitor the second row. CabinTalk allows you to broadcast your voice to the 2nd and 3rd row (so you don’t have to shout), and the rear Blu-ray Rear Entertainment system will keep everyone entertained. The “How Much Farther” app is a child-friendly navigation tracking app that allows passengers to track

In fact as I drove the Odyssey around town and on highways, it was easy to forget that I was driving a family van and not a sports sedan, thanks to a a strong V6 engine and sharp, predictable handling. The 2019 Honda Odyssey comes equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, providing 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The fuel economy for the Honda Odyssey measures in at 12.6, 8.4 and 10.7 L/100km for city, highway and combined respectively.

8-in. box now holds 1,781 litres, with compact wall construction creating a 170 mm (seven in) wider bed floor that is also 50 per cent stronger, thanks to high-grade steel construction.

Cargo bed functionality has been tweaked with better LED box lighting, a new available 120V AC outlet, 12 heavy-duty tie-downs now rated at 227 kg (500 lb) per corner and improved box access for loading via larger rear CornerStep openings.

GMC pushes the payload boundaries this year with the Sierra-exclusive, industry-first CarbonPro carbon fibre cargo box, weighing in at 28 kg (62 lb) less than the normal steel box.

And, since cargo-hauling challenges extend beyond the box, a new collection of trailer techs include a ProGrade Trailering System and Trailering App with maintenance reminders, a pre-departure checklist, trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring, along with a trailer light test and electrical diagnostics program. Other towing features include a camera-assisted Hitch Guidance, an auto electric park brake and trailer theft detection through OnStar.

The 2019 Sierra comes in a dizzying array of choices - in regular cab, double cab and crew cab configurations with three cargo box sizes, in 2WD and 4WD, and harnessing six different powertrains with varying payload, weight and tow ratings.

The six engine choices include some carryover 4.3-litre and 5.3-litre V8s with six-speed transmissions. A new 2.7-litre inline four-cylinder turbo with eightspeed transmission and 3.0-litre turbo inline six-cylinder diesel engine with a 10-speed transmission will come on stream later.

The AT4 adds a two-inch lift kit, blacked-out or body-coloured trims, mud terrain-rated tires, a two-speed transfer case, red recovery hooks and other off-road cues and capabilities.

GMC boasts a larger segment share here in Canada than in any other global market and Sierra has been GM’s best-selling nameplate for the past nine years. With new 2019 Sierra’s rolling of the line since late July, even GM’s Oshawa plant facilities have been involved with final assembly of the new trucks.

DURANGO ax towing: 8,700 lbs

When Dodge launched the Durango in 1997 as a 1998 model, it became an instant hit. Based on the Dakota pick-up truck, the

BY AKASH SABLOK Durango offered comfortable seating for up to seven passengers, with room for their cargo, decent styling, and tow capacity of 3,400kg (7,800lbs).

Now in its third generation, the Durango has all of the above, plus modern styling and now a 3,955kg (8700lb) tow rating capability, when properly equipped.

With some minor tweaks from 2018 model, the 2019 comes in five flavours: the SXT, GT, Citadel, R/T and SRT. The SRT should come with a racing helmet with a 475 horsepower 6.4L V8 HEMI resides in the engine bay. Zero to 100km/h happens in about 4.4 seconds and covers the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds. Seats in an upright position, belts on please.

Base models are powered by the hearty 3.6-liter 295-hp Pentastar V6, mated to the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic.

The V6 is rated at up to 295 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and a towing capability of 2818kg (6,200lbs). The R/T version comes standard with the 360-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V8.

All-wheel drive is optional on all models except the SRT, where it’s standard. Have an SRT plate on the rear, and you can order two-piece rotor Brembo brakes and red seatbelts. How cool is your Mom or Dad when they drop you off at hockey practice in the Durango?!

The latest technology for 2019 includes a programmable digital instrument cluster, available class-exclusive 9-inch dual screen Blu-ray and DVD player, available 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen radio with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, new available integrated trailer brake when equipped with the Trailer Tow Package, and a function to view trailed items through the rearmounted camera while the Durango is in motion.

Durango’s available three-row seating offers

Families with three or more children will find the Durango’s available captain’s chairs with pass-through especially helpful as child safety seats can be latched into each second-row seat, and there’s still easy pass-through for passengers to walk between to get to the third row.

Beefier, flashier and tough when the going gets tough Competition in the full size truck world is tough. The trucks themselves are tough as well. Toyotas’ 2019 Tundra is heavy-weight contender in the field. The Tundra is more than enough truck for most jobs -- and it has that famous Toyota-build quality going for it.

Good isolation from the road and robust power from its V-8 engines elevate the 2019 Toyota Tundra, and the ergonomic, comfortable interior makes spending time here easy to do.

The Tundra’s powertrain lineup is simple. A 6-speed automatic, with predictable, smooth shifts, sends power to the rear (RWD) or all four wheels (4WD). Most Tundra’s use a 381-horsepower, 401 lb-ft of torque, 5.7-liter V-8, although a 310-hp, 327lb-ft of torque, 4.6-liter is standard on SR and SR5 trims. Both V-8’s furnish good power matched to a racecar-grade soundtrack, especially with the optional cat-back exhaust. They’re smooth at idle – and when properly equipped, can haul up to 4,535 kg (10,000lbs.) of fun stuff, ie, boats, campers, motorbikes, behind it.

You’ll be able to haul whatever you’re hauling for a long time as the fuel tank is a massive 143 litres (38 gallons) in the Limited, Platinum trims, so the needle will move slowly enough to let you think you’re getting good gas mileage. The bigger V8, 5.7-liter offers of mixed (city/hwy) economy of 19L/100km (15mpg).

The Easy Lower & Lift Tailgate, which opens and closes with

as little as two fingers, can be removed entirely. If you add a tonneau cover or shell, the tailgate can be locked to secure your cargo. Both CrewMax Platinum and 1794 Edition feature a power tailgate lock for added convenience.

The Tundra has a soft, composed ride over most pavement.

The tail end can get bouncy without any cargo holding it down, though this is typical for full-size pickups. Its steering has more heft than some rivals, a trait I appreciate over the too-light, toovague steering of some other brands.

On the highway, the Tundra’s ride is smooth and composed, highway tracking is above average, and most versions are wellisolated.

An updated TRD Pro model for 2019 is taller, beefier, flashier, and more capable when the going gets rough. For off-roaders, the Tundra TRD Pro has upgraded Fox shocks that give it an especially cosseting ride. Its girth means that the Tundra isn’t wellsuited to tighter trails, but it’s fine for bounding over dirt roads, in fields, or on sand. Too bad they’re no sand dunes in the Lower Mainland!

The TRD Pro also gets new 18-inch BBS forged aluminum wheels finished in black and special TRD dual exhaust with black chrome exhaust tips.

The Tundra bests every rival in its active safety tech: standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive

cruise control with pedestrian detection, and automatic highbeam headlights. Optional equipment available on most trims includes blind-spot monitors and rear cross-traffic alerts.

Inside, the Tundra varies widely, depending on trim level. Base SR models get a 6.1-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system with USB and Bluetooth, but not much else. The SR5 model includes a 7-inch touchscreen, a smartphone-connected navigation system, HD Radio and satellite radio compatibility, chrome bumpers, and an optional power driver’s seat.

The Tundra is available in extended- and crewcab configurations. The latter is far more popular and it has a long cab with wide doors front and rear.

In the past, Mercedes-Benz was a brand most well-known for luxury and elegance, but less so about performance. However, all that changed when AMG sub-brand was launched a number of years ago – slowly but surely changing the image of the

BY DAVID CHAO “pointed star.” AMG performance division is specifically designed to deliver world-class vehicles that may surprise even the loyal Porsche and BMW fans, because AMG’s high-performance vehicles are simply some of the best in the industry.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 45 is no exception, a compact crossover with an astounding – if somewhat raw – power and handling. It is somewhat unique in the marketplace, offering both neck-snapping performance and practicality at the same time. The GLA 45 competes with the likes of VW Golf R (which is much cheaper), Audi RS3, and perhaps even the BMW X2. But most competitors do not offer the functionality of a five-door hatch, though some Japanese automakers such as Subaru and Honda do offer them in lower price range (WRX STI and Type R).

For 2019, the engine is improved and it now pumps out 20 more horsepower and 18 more lb-ft. of torque.

Design A larger-than-life attitude characterizes the AMG GLA 45 and is present throughout the bold design features. New wheels and bumpers round out the changes made for 2019. The new spoiler lip and airflow vent in the rear help to reduce the drag coefficient and improve aerodynamic flow. This adventurous design also features an AMG double-crosswing grille and an optional “Night Package” which shows off many exterior features rendered in a gloss black.

As with all Mercedes-Benz, luxurious amenities and features are found throughout the interior. Power front seats with memory, power liftgate, 12-color LED ambient lighting and harman/kardon surround sound are just a few of these features. The performance seats are highly contoured and snug, and have red topstitching to complement the bright red seatbelts. However, the deep-bucket shape and firm feel can make your morning commute a little less than comfortable.

There is an optional performance steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles to follow the sporty theme.

Innovative technology in the GLA 45 help the driver feel entertained, engaged, but most of all – connected. This includes the “Mercedes me” app that offers Remote Start, 4G LTE wifi, and in-car internet. Data can also be transmitted to the dealer about service needs, remote diagnostics, software updates and accident recovery.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also fully integrated into the infotainment system. The Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 45 is fairly roomy with a total capacity of 1,235 litres, although this capacity is overshadowed by the larger Audi RS3 sedan or BMW X2 SUV. One interesting standard feature is Attention Assist, which is a function that continuously monitors driving behaviour (up to 70 different facets), and will alert the driver on screen and with audible warnings to take a rest if needed.

The GLA also comes with eight airbags (including driver’s knee), blind-spot sensors, lane-departure warning, collision mitigation, and lane-keep assist.

Performance The AMG GLA 45 revs from zero to 100 km/hour in just 4.4 seconds, 2.2 seconds faster than the tamer GLA 250.

The GLA 45 comes equipped with AWD and this seems to be biased towards the front tires. However, power is distributed to the rear tires as required. The handcrafted 2.0L turbo I4 engine for the GLA 45 was given a makeover this year with a new camshaft, new engine management as well as 26.1 psi of boost which provides an impressive 375 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque.

Paired with this powerful engine is a speedshift DCT 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. An ECO Start/Stop system is similar to many other vehicles and is automatically engaged to save fuel and reduce emissions.

Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Race are driving modes that are tailored for every driving situation. The GLA 45 hugs the pavement thanks to turbo-fed traction, precision handling and a chassis with well-developed springs, dampers and stabilizers.

On the other hand, some may feel that the stiff suspension and overly aggressive shift program make the GLA 45 a bit difficult to drive smoothly. The baby Benz accel-

erates like there is no tomorrow and the exhaust sound is a music to ears (if you are sports car fans), but the car can be quite bumpy over rough roads and the transmission shifting could come across abrupt under hard acceleration.

If you don’t mind buying a non-luxury brand, the VW Golf R and Honda Civic Type R present interesting alternatives.

They don’t compete directly per se, but the performance levels are comparable and they are cheaper and far easier to drive as a day-to-day vehicle.

Fuel consumption for the GLA 45 for highway/city is 8.3L/100km and 10.7 L/100km respectively, and CO2 emissions combined are 193 g/km.

Summary The 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 45 starts from $53,100 and this means that it’s definitely at the top of the price range. There are numerous add-on packages available, which means you can customize your ride and truly make the GLA 45 your own.

Can the GLA 45 distinguish itself well enough from the more economical hot hatchbacks with similar performance abilities? I think so, because with the AMG GLA 45, you will not need to choose between performance and luxury, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Getting tough

with risky drivers

As weather patterns change, roadways are becoming slick as they are greeted by rain or snow, depending on where you live – and while many drivers will take a little extra time to get to their destination and adopt a more cautious approach, that does not extend to every motorist.

It is also worth noting, drivers who fail to pay the premiums will not be allowed to renew their driver’s licence nor purchase vehicle insurance through ICBC. They’ll also be charged 19.6 per cent in interest after 60 days without payment.

All too often there are close calls or worse because drivers are speeding or simply not adhering to some of the very basic rules that accompany the responsibility that comes with getting behind the wheel.

High-risk driving behaviours such as speeding, failing to yield, ignoring traffic control devices, following too closely and improper passing, all increase a driver’s chances of being in a crash and putting not only themselves at risk, but other drivers as well.

To those who refuse to defer to common sense, the Provincial Government is taking a tougher stand against dangerous driving.

As of November 1st, in addition to any fines associated with an infraction, dangerous drivers now face a 20 per cent increase in the Driver Risk Premium (DRP), which is charged annually to drivers who are convicted of dangerous driving offences and the Driver Penalty Point (DPP) premium, which is a penalty for collecting four or more points from traffic violations.

According to police statistics, these behaviours contribute to nearly half (43 per cent) of all crashes that result in injuries or death in BC. In fact, on average, 143 people die in crashes involving high-risk driving each year.

The new rules come on the heels of measures that were introduced last spring to combat distracted driving, through which the Driver Risk Premium (DRP) program was adjusted to include convictions for distracted drivers who continue to put road users at risk by using electronic devices while driving.

I would hope the threat of a significant financial penalty will cause drivers to think twice about their driving habits before getting behind the wheel. It’s a message that needs to get through to dangerous drivers, because keeping our roads safe is all of our collective responsibility.

Thirdly, the Parallel mode predominantly uses the gasoline engine with assistance by the electric motor when extra power is needed.

By 2020, Mitsubishi has set a goal to have 20 per cent of its sales as either plug-in hybrid or completely electric vehicles – a very ambitious goal indeed. However, if the Outlander PHEV continues to sell well, Mitsubishi will have no problem meeting its goal.

a polished gem BMW is a car company with a long history of delivering performance and luxury. BMW is also an intelligent company, with an ability to “read” the market extremely accurately and offer something that competitors sometimes cannot.

The whole X series of SUVs is a proof that BMW knows its customers, as it attacks the marketplace from every

BY DAVID CHAO angle – BMW now offers the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, and soon X7. And each of these models offer numerous trim levels, ranging from the “standard” models to the high performance “M” series in some cases.

Among these, the X3 is the most important model of all, as it is squarely aimed at the high volume mid-sized luxury SUVs – competing against the likes of Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC, Lexus RX, and Acura RDX.

The interior of the X3 is plush and extensive attention to detail is apparent throughout. Optional 40:60:40 split-folding rear seats and a power tailgate cater to every configuration one can imagine. Cabin ergonomics are perfectly designed and cabin fit and finish is excellent. Only the surprising wind noise and tire noise come to attention as detractors.

Optional extras for the X3 include a large panoramic sunroof, BMW Gesture Control (touch-free interaction with the infotainment system), large heads-up display, a 10.3inch touchscreen, and a bevy of others. For improved safety, the Driving Assistance package can be added

All-wheel-drive is now standard on all BMW X3s but diesel is no longer an option on any X3. Drive modes are controlled by an optional add-on adaptive damper system and are available in Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Adaptive modes. The more expensive M40i model comes with an exciting and edgy Sport+ mode as well. Fuel consumption for the X3 M40i is listed as between 8.4-8.2 l/100km for combined highway and city driving. At this point in time, there are no electrified or hybrid options for the X3.

On the road, the X3 handles smoothly and in a most polished way possible. The steering is improved over the 2017, with better road feedback and linear feel. Even the standard engine is superior to many competitors.

With the all new 2018 BMW X3, BMW is going to prove that it’s still at the top of the market, offering state-of-the-art features and highly refined chassis. The new X3 is the most refined and advanced X3 ever and will also be the first time to offer an authentic “M” model: the X3M. The third generation of the X3, still built in the US, resembles the lineage of the past but with many notable changes.

Design

The BMW X3 strikes a dramatic profile with a long hood, tapered roofline and rear end that rises up, reminiscent of the original 2004 X3 design. Some differences noted from previous models would include the addition of air intakes mounted low on the front fascia, large rear taillights emphasizing a shapelier backside, and a higher 19.6-inch clearance from the ground.

As far as safety ratings are concerned, the IIHS rates the base trim level 2018 BMW X3 a Top Safety Pick+.

Performance

BMW’s trademark grille rounds out the front but is now larger and includes air vents to reduce aerodynamic drag.

While the base trim level comes with attractive aluminum and silver exterior accents, the luxury trim level upgrades the exterior to two-tone finish, additional chrome trim and a different bumper cover.

The 2018 BMW X3 xDrive30i comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-litre inline-four engine, while the x3 M40i comes with a six-cylinder turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six.

These engines are new to the X3 line, although they are shared with other BMW vehicles within the 3 and 5 series.

The xDrive30i engine provides 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and the M40i engine provides 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque – plenty in either case.

Moving up to the flagship M Sport package will soup up your X3 with flared fenders and a sportier body. While the X3 is not as “attractive” to some when compared to fashionable vehicles such as Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace, it’s a stellar vehicle nonetheless.

The M40i engine packs a real punch and jumps from zero to 100 km/hr in 4.8 seconds according to BMW - and if true, it’s the best in class (matching acceleration speed of the 400 horsepower Porsche Macan Turbo). Both engines are combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission

The only thing to keep in mind is that the X3 – at least in the base trim – is not really a “sporty” SUV as it emphasizes ride quality and smoothness above all else. It trails slightly behind the Q5 for steering feel but outperforms most of the Japanese competitors such as the Lexus RX and even the new Acura RDX for handling. The Germans somehow manages to deliver a more performance-oriented handling year after year despite the Japanese claiming to be better. On the other hand, no BMWs, Mercedes or Audi can compete with Lexus and Acura for reliability and overall smoothness.

I would say the new Acura RDX is the closest in feel to the X3, but somehow Acura put strange “fake” engine sound onto the new RDX and it just doesn’t feel as natural as the X3. So all in all, the X3 is a hard car to beat; the only car that I feel is truly better is the Porsche Macan with its excellent world-class handling.

Summary

The 2018 BMW X3 comes in two trims: the xDrive30i or the M40i. The xDrive30i starts at $48,000 MSRP and the M40i starts from $61,500. The much anticipated X3M has not been officially announced yet.

With high level of versatility and all the available options, it’s easy for the price tag to jump up significantly. BMW as a company is not just looking to tomorrow or a few years from now, but instead BMW has its sights set on the “Next 100 Years.” And the new X3 certainly feels like it’s moving towards that vision.

Also noticed was the under-the-hood punch. Nestled between its broad flanks was a 303-cubic-inch “Hy-Fire” V8 that was capable of 240 horsepower, which was 40 more than the next-strongest Plymouth engine.

The Hy-Fire-equipped Fury gave Plymouth the kind of performance it had craved for years. The car was capable of zero-to-60mph (96 km-h) times of about 10 seconds, and it could reach a velocity of 110 mph (175 km-h) riding on its skinny bias-ply tires. In fact, a specially modified Fury hit a top speed of 145 mph (232 km-h) on the sands of Daytona Beach, Fla., shattering two records in the process.

THE BEST V8 FOUND IN THE LATE-’50S FURY WAS LIKELY THE 305-HORSEPOWER 361-CUBIC-INCHER FOR 1959. PREVIOUS TO THAT WAS A 350-CUBIC-INCH “GOLDEN COMMANDO” THAT DISPLACED 350 CUBIC INCHES.

Fury followers were treated to greater performance in 1958. Displacement of the new “Golden Commando” V8 reached 350 cubic inches, while horsepower reached 305.

That year, a few Furys received mechanical fuel injection, but problems with these 315-horsepower versions significantly limited production. Other than the adoption of quad headlights and other minor tweaks, the ’58 Fury was nearly indistinguishable from its 1957 counterpart.

All good things eventually come to an end, and so it was with the Plymouth Fury. In 1959, the car ceased to be a single model and, instead, became an entire line of two- and four-door hardtops along with a convertible that was available in various colours. A new Sport Fury, complete with a 305-horsepower 361 cubic-inch V8 and fake spare tire bulge on the trunk lid, stoplight matchups throughout the land. All owed took centre stage.

As the decade ended, the Fury might have lost its special charm, but Chrysler had succeeded in creating a bona fide Plymouth performance machine and, most importantly, a newfound image for its previously underachieving marque.

Future horsepower-laden Plymouths would become the toast of NASCAR, NHRA drag racing and impromptu jackrabbit stoplight matchups throughout the land. All owed a debt of gratitude to those early Furys that paved the way with their eye-popping style and superior substance.

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a very different type of SUV

Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo has history that dates back to 1910, when Cavalier Ego Stella acquired the shares of an Italian factory of a French carmaker. At that time, he decided to rename the plant “Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili” or ALFA.

Since then, Alfa Romeo has built a reputation as one of the most desirable cars to drive in the world, filled to the brim with emotion and passion. Simply put, there are no other brands like Alfa (save Ferrari, also owned by the same company), especially in the mainstream segments.

In the case of the new Stelvio SUV from Alfa Romeo, the ride and handling is absolutely top notch and world-class. In fact, when you drive the Stelvio back to back with the likes of Audi Q5, Lexus NX, BMW X3, or even the brand new Acura RDX, you really wonder how Alfa managed to squeeze-in this much “fun to drive” character that is really lacking these days in the mid- and compact-sized SUV market. About the only model to come anywhere close to the Stelvio is the Porsche Macan, which is significantly more expensive, though the Macan has an excellent reliability history.

This mid-size SUV is produced in Alfa Romeo’s Cassino Assembly Plant in Italy. Only in its second model year of production, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio remains virtually the same for 2019, save for a few minor changes.

The Stelvio is a reflection of Alfa’s highly cultured birthplace and this shines through both in the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Bold grille, curvy lines, and sculptured shape

give the Stelvio unique and a sporty appearance.

screaming 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine that pumps out a heart-racing (best in class) 505 horsepower and 443 lbft. of torque. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed transmission.

Genuine wood, real leather, carbon fibre, aluminum and high quality fabrics are found in each trim level and reflect a luxurious and elegant interior. The only drawback in the interior is the thick roof pillars that limit visibility to a degree.

Everything looks like they are well built in terms of material quality, but it’s hard to judge how the Stelvio will fare in terms of mechanical or electrical reliability over time.

Honestly, you have to drive the Stelvio to believe the fact that it’s possible to design a SUV that drives like a real sports vehicle. The handling is sharp, light and easy to touch, and the ride just perfect. The car handles like a dream and other than the Porsche Macan, nothing else comes close. Even the base 2.0 litre engine is impressive, with plenty of torque and get-up-and-go power throughout the rev ranges.

Technology is smart and intuitive in the Stelvio, and both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported. That being said, the voice control option is hard to use and frustratingly inaccurate.

The driver has full and personalized control with the Alfa DNA Pro Drive Mode Selector, featuring Dynamic, Natural and Added Efficiency (DNA). For those driving the Quadrifoglio, there is also a Race mode available.

Solid 1600 litres (56.5 cubic feet) of cargo space is available in the Stelvio, balancing out the luxury and fun nature of the mid-size SUV with a very practical and responsible features as well.

Fuel economy for the Stelvio and Stelvio Ti is 10.8/8.3/9.6 L/100km for city/highway/combined. Fuel economy for the Quadrifoglio is 14.1/10.4/12.4 L/100km, not bad for a super sports SUV.

I would recommend adding the Driver Assist Dynamic Plus package to maximize safety. This would add automatic high beams, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control to your Stelvio. Speaking of packages, I would also recommend the “Cold Weather Package” for cold, Canadian winters. This would add heated front seats, heated steering wheel and heated washer nozzles to keep you and your Stelvio nice and warm.

For a car company that has a long history full of ups and downs, it remains to be seen if it pays off for Alfa Romeo.

With the longstanding mindset of “never second,” Alfa Romeo has a clear goal and a long and exciting road ahead.

Engines remain unchanged for 2019, and include two options. The first option with the base model Stelvio and the Stelvio Ti is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which produces 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft. of torque. The second option is only available with the top-level Quadrifoglio and it’s a

Available in both five and seven-seat passenger configurations, the Kia Sorento can haul a big family but still avoid feeling clunky or oversized. Even though Kia is thought of as an economy brand, you get a lot of value – including the generous five-year limited and 10year powertrain warranties. Keep in mind though, that the Sorento isn’t in the same league as the benchmark vehicles like the Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9, or the Toyota Highlander. The Sorento can’t match these vehicles in terms of refinement or powertrain smoothness.

The cabin is well appointed and the interior feels solid and upscale. The Kia Sorento provides a plush and comfortable driving environment with soft-touch plastics, Napa leather options, and heated seats that offer a cooling option in the summer. The third row folds down with

Golden Ears Way

The Kia Sorento comes with many trim levels, including the base LX AWD, LX AWD, LX Turbo, LX V6, EX Turbo, EX V6, EX+ V6, SX Turbo, SX V6 or the SXL. While this may seem like an incredibly complex, you will not be let down by the dazzling array of options Kia offers.

Kia offers a choice of three GDI engines for this model, including a 3.3-litre V6 engine that provides 290 horsepower @ 6,400rpm and 252 lb-ft of torque @ 5,300 rpm.

The vehicle comes with a six-speed automatic transmission and provides up to 5,000 lbs. of towing capability.

Fuel economy for the base model is reported to be 11.2 L/100km in the city, and 8.3 L/100km on the highway.

While not as exciting to drive as other crossovers, the Kia Sorento is competent if not a little stiff. There is a pronounced body roll on curvy back roads, but this lends to the Sorento’s relaxed character more so than being a

With regards to safety, The 2018 Kia Sorento was awarded the Top Safety Pick+ designation by the IIHS. This was due to major improvements to its headlights, a Superior grade on front crash prevention, as well as a Good score on all crash tests. The available Smart Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Parking Sonars and 360 degree camera monitoring system provide further safety.

Kia’s infotainment system is easy to use and is compatible with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. While there is no control knob, the touchscreen is responsive and highly functional. There is an optional 115V electrical power outlet, meaning you can plug in larger electronics such as a laptop or portable gaming console.
