When you have a reasonably priced vehicle that can easily carry around your friends and family and your cargo and can then pull along another (up to) 2,272kg of a boat/bikes/trailer, then you could get away with just one vehicle in the driveway. The updated and tweaked 2019 Honda Pilot offers the same 3.5L V6 engine, rated at 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque, but with enhanced driving and comfort features inside and out. While there is no dedicated towing mode, the Pilot is rated to tow up to 2,272kg (5,000 lbs) when equipped with a transmission oil cooler. Say no to the transmission cooler option and the boat & trailer behind you should weigh less than 1,590kg (3,500 lbs). Honda’s fancy name of its AWD system is I-VTM4, which translates to Intelligent Variable Traction Management. The performance lives up to the fancy name, as the Pilot easily handled descents, inclines, medium size crevices, and the infamous mall parking lot speed-bum. The centre differential is capable of sending up to 70% of the power to the rear axle and the active rear differential, with true torque vectoring, can transfer up to 100% of rear torque from one side to the other.

seven devices. I would suggest you don’t read today’s news highlights on your iPad while driving in rush hour trafﬁc. Even more pleasing for the driver is a larger 7” TFT screen as the dashboard. This sharp, clear screen replaces last years’ 4.2” version. When I saw that my test Pilot (groan) was equipped with Honda’s CabinTalk and How Much Further App, I immediately borrowed two kids (okay, my own two) and put the two features to test. CabinTalk allows the driver and/ or front seat passenger to speak to the rest of the occupants behind them, without raising your voice. Your voice is carried over the second and third-row speakers. The How Much Farther app gives the rear seat passengers, usually of the pre-teen, sometimes teen, and even sometimes mid-30’s kind, direct updates of just how farther there is to go to your destination. I can hear my parents

wishing for this feature oh, about forty years ago. The exterior receives a few visual tweaks just before this decade ends. The front end gets an updated fascia along with standard LED low beams and more aggressive-looking fog light housings. Walk around to the back, and you will see a new bumper and tail lamps with integrated LED back-up lights. The Pilot design has always been more utilitarian, than stunning. With these changes, it has inched closer to stunning. Small inches. Across all trim levels, the Pilot includes almost all of Honda’s assist systems; adaptive cruise control, lanekeep assist, road departure mitigation, forward-collision warning, and collision-mitigation braking. Trims labelled EX and higher add blind-spot monitoring as standard. The Pilot stands out as one of my favourite SUV’s, for many reasons, including its ability to carry a bunch of people and stuff in relative comfort and its tech features.

This the first significant refresh of the Pilot since it’s 2016 major revamp. The changes are mostly in the technology side of things, and that’s just fine by me. All Pilots, save for the base LX trim, come with an eight-inch touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The interface is one of the slickest ones I have tested, and comes with the ability to customize the layout. Wireless charging keeps your source device ready to go. Updates to the system are via an embedded 4G LTE cellular chip, which also provides a hot-spot for up to

What to know when you have toys in tow

When it comes to recreation — at least in BC — there are two kinds of people. One likes to board a plane with a suitcase or two, suntanning on a beach and seeking some five-star hotel comfort. The other loves to hit the road in search of the perfect lake or mountain camping in a remote spot. They’ve discovered the joy of connecting with family and friends in the great outdoors, sleeping better, and ditching the stress of traditional travel. They’ve bought their toy-haulers, boats, travel trailers or little tent trailers. But they need to consider how to haul their toys safely and hassle-free. With so many versions of each so many vehicles that have pulling power available t rucks with V6, V8, gas, hybrid and diesel engine choices, 2- and 4-wheel drive SUV’s and even sedans that have towing package options — towing capabilities vary widely.

Ask yourself a few simple questions will help you nar-

row your choices. What do you plan to tow? How will you use your vehicle when you’re not pulling your boat or trailer? Are you planning to upgrade your boat or trailer soon? Finding the right car or truck to tow, however, calls for drivers to do their homework and know the weight that any vehicle is capable of pulling your toys or tools safely, especially in our challenging roads in BC. Failing to do so could result in more than just a stall on a hill starts or a worn-out clutch; serious accidents are frequently caused by drivers trying to tow more than their car is capable of. A large camper or boat may double the weight of the towing car. Trying to control all that bulk through a single hinge – the tow bar – is a challenge for both the car’s capabilities and a driver’s skills behind the wheel. Any experienced driver that frequently uses their vehicle to tow will tell you that an excellent tow car is a stable tow car. That means the car

should always be heavier than what it’s pulling.

Hauling such an heavy amount of weight puts a tremendous lot of strain on a car’s engine and transmission. The engine will need plenty of pulling power (or torque). This is where the homework and research come in. You’ll find information on the torque or pulling power in every car brochure, within the technical specifications of the engine. The more torque an engine has, and the lower in the rev range it’s developed is generally a good sign that the car will make light work of towing. If you’re thinking of buying new, and towing something is a part of your lifestyle, whether its for work or place, you might want to consider a factory tow package. Most tow packages include a hitch platform, trailer towing wiring harness, engine cooling capability, transmission cooling capability, and sturdy frame for mounting the hitch. In many cases, factory designers add or upgrade such things as

the rear-end (differential) gearing to make towing less stressful on the engine and transmission. Often they also upgrade the battery, alternator, and charging system wiring to handle the added electrical load of the trailer’s lights. Four-wheel drive is a boon,

particularly if you plan to tow in all weather, in mountainous or hilly areas or on slippery surfaces. However, for lighter loads, you’ll find it’s often not necessary. ICBC offers a towing trailer guide that will help you with your decisions when it comes to towing.

They suggest you compare the size of the truck that you are going to use to tow the trailer to the size of the trailer. Even if a compact pickup truck is capable of handling the weight of an RV trailer, its narrow width compared to the wider trailer width may affect

vision to the rear. If you have a smaller truck you may want to consider side mirror extenders to improve your visibility. Narrower trailers are available for use with compact pickup trucks. It’s best to select a full-size pickup truck to tow a large recreational trailer.

Their guide also has a helpful ‘before you go’ pre-inspection guide. A pre-trip inspection can make the difference between a safe trip and one that ends in disaster. The inspection is to look for possible safety defects and potential mechanical problems that could

Most of my reviews start with the exterior of a vehicle and that too at the front. In this case, I’m going straight to the back, and inside. Why, because as every Trekkie knows, BY AKASH SABLOK space is the final frontier and the 2019 Ford Expedition is the S.S. Enterprise. With all eyes forward, and seats in an upright position (…this is your Captain speaking), you can fit in 593L of cargo in the Expedition and 1019L in the MAX version. Moving forward; tilting the third row of seats down provides you with 1800L and 2254L of cargo volume for the regular and Max versions, respectively. Ask everyone, except for you and one passenger, to stay home, and you have a whopping 2962L and 3439L (base and Max) behind the first row. A pet dog or a small pet elephant, either one would be happy lounging around the back. You might want to check with your local authorities before you bring Dumbo home. Row 1 seats are of the bucket style and they feature 6-way movement with power lumbar support. Row 2 is a 40/20/40 split (Fords’ CenterSlide seating) with recline. And row 3 incorporates Fords’ PowerFold seating system. Legroom is definitely not at a premium here, with your toes sitting comfortably in 1053mm, 1081, and 917mm of space in the rows one, two and three, respectively. Those who have spent any time in a Ford F-150 pick-up truck will

feel right at home here as the Expedition is not only based on the same platform as the sturdy F-150, it shares a whole slew of interior parts.

And yes, the gadget guy in me kept opening and closing the doors to watch the retractable running boards go in and out. That’s fifteen minutes of my life I am okay with not getting back.

Buyers that choose the base model will be quite happy with the equipment level of their Expedition. The XLT model (base) comes standard with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with start/ stop connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Threezone air conditioning with rear controls, an audio system with AM/ FM, MP3, CD, SiriusXM and nine speakers, plus audio, Bluetooth and USB inputs are great items to have, even if they fall into the “all vehicles should have those” category. What’s pretty cool to see was that Ford made a rearview camera with backup grid lines and a washer, multiple airbags, a post-crash alert system for emergency help, and trailer-sway control, power-folding 3rd-row seatbacks, push-button start and keyless entry standard as well.

With you and seven more passengers, and your gear, all settled in comfortably, you can still take along an outdoor activity with you. The Class IV trailer hitch allows you to tow a large boat or camper-trailer, up to 4173kg (9200lb), when equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package.

Want to part with some more cash, and you can order leather seating, 10-way-power driver’s seat with memory, multi-zone automatic climate control, dual-headrest rear-seat entertainment, heated and ventilated seats, and additional safety systems: adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist and alert, and collision warning and mitigation.

Mother Nature has seven terrains that the Expedition has Terrain Management System modes for; snow, wet, grass, gravel, snow, sand, and mud/rut, all designed to optimize driving dynamics for each environmental condition. Time to read that weather report more carefully. Introduced as a 2018 model, the new Expedition is Fords’ return to the large SUV market. With classic, yet contemporary styling, a potent drivetrain, and that high towing capacity, I say welcome back. Now onto to explore new galaxies, I mean parks…

BY MALCOLM GUNN WWW.WHEELBASEMEDIA.COM It is virtually unthinkable in today’s megabuck world of specialized Formula One open-wheel auto racing that any of its drivers could launch his own race team. And design and compete in his very own car. Bruce McLaren not only accomplished this feat more than four decades ago, but the company he founded continues to be one of the more successful organizations in Formula One. All of this despite the fact that its founder died in 1970 at the tender age of 32. In his all-too-brief life, McLaren managed an impressive list of successes. His European driving career began while he was barely into his 20s and his first win came at age 22 at the 1959 United States Grand Prix. Seven years later the talented New Zealander had formed his own team and was driving in a chassis built by his company, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd. The 1968 Belgian Grand Prix would mark the site of McLaren’s one and only victory piloting his own car. Between running his race teams, designing both Grand Prix and Indianapolis customer cars and competing in both the Canadian-American Challenge Cup series (Can-Am) and Formula One, McLaren also found time to help develop the Ford Motor Company’s assault on one of the world’s most prestigious motor racing events: the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race held in France. In fact it was McLaren who, along with driving legend Dan Gurney, piloted a GT40 to victory in 1966, which was Ford’s first at this fabled circuit. In North America, Bruce McLaren’s name and reputation might have been almost unknown were it not for Can-Am, a short-lived racing series (1966-‘74) that produced some of the wildest and most exhilarating competition ever seen. Highly experimental in nature, the series allowed purposebuilt sports cars to run with up to 8.0 litres of displacement (about 480 cubic inches), not to mention nearly unlimited power. Beginning in 1967, fans had grown accustomed to watching McLaren and his running mate, fellow New Zealander Denny Hulme, beat nearly all comers in the series. Can -Am quickly became affectionately known as “The Bruce and Denny Show,” with one driver or the other usually taking the checkered flag, including all 11 contests in 1969, which was the team’s most successful outing. Although the results had become predictable, the sights, sounds and vibrations put out by these Can-Am beasts would literally take your breath away. The series attracted some of the world’s most talented drivers who in turn brought out the fans by the thousands. The simple experience of being a spectator was nothing short of incredible. As a young man, I was fortunate enough to have

You have probably heard of McLaren cars, but how about the man who began it all?

attended a 1970 race held at Mosport Park near Toronto, and recall positioning myself on a hill overlooking Turn Three, waiting for the event to begin. The slow-moving train of about 20 mid-engined cars made a deafening sound during the warm-up lap, but when the race began, the ground literally trembled as the shock waves from the car’s monster motors penetrated the earth’s crust. Nearby, a trio of young children who had accompanied their parents, screamed in utter terror. The two bright orange Chevrolet-powered McLaren M8Ds (nicknamed the Batmobiles for their wedgeshaped appearance) competing on that warm day in June led from wire to wire. Sadly, though, the man I had come to watch was not there to take the checkered flag. Bruce McLaren had died in England two weeks before while testing the M8D. Although it was a pleasure to watch Dan Gurney win that day (he and Englishman Peter Gethin drove for the team that year), the victory was a bittersweet moment. While the decision was made to withdraw Team McLaren after the 1972 campaign to concentrate on Formula One, several other private entries kept the brand alive and consistently winning for another two years until rule changes forced all McLarens from active competition. Naturally, the success of the McLarens on the track led to several orders from other teams desperate for some of the McLaren magic, thereby substantially adding to the company’s coffers. Since his death, and under the leadership of men such as Teddy Mayer, Ron Dennis and supported by a host of talented engineers, designers, mechanics and drivers, McLaren race cars have remained competitive on the world’s Grand

Prix circuits, capturing numerous constructors titles along the way. The results are a fitting tribute to this quiet man who saw no limits to the goals he set for himself, achieving much in life and honoured many times over in succeeding decades.

20 Range Rover 18 VELAR style AND technology Land Rover vehicles have been around since 1947, providing over 50 years of quality. The newest debut for the Land Rover family is the 2018 Range Rover Velar. The Velar (pronounced “vehlaar”) sits in-between the Evoque and BY DAVID CHAO the Range Rover Sport models and it has already won an award for the best small premium utility vehicle in Canada - the first of three awards for Jaguar Land Rover this year. The Velar promises to be a very important vehicle and could take sales away from its competitors such as the Porsche Macan, BMW X4, and Mercedes GLC. The name “Velar” refers to the original 1960’s Range Rover prototypes. The meaning of the name is to veil, or cover – it was what they used to camouflage their prototypes. The Velar unsurprisingly looks like a Range Rover, but more trendy and “tech” looking, inside and out. The words that come to mind when looking at the new Velar are refined, sophisticated, and intelligent. . Deployable flush

At the rear, quad tail lights flank the iconic Range Rover script. The Velar is filled with LED lighting both inside and out (head, tail and fog), lighting the road up to half a kilometre away. The resulting look is proud and streamlined, without appearing too brutish or flashy. The clamshell-shaped hood and black “floating” roof are meant to pay homage to the Range Rover lineage. Inside the cabin, it is clear that designers wanted to provide a sense of calm elegance. This is accomplished through minimalist controls, simple lines, a customizable ambient lighting feature, and a panoramic roof that floods the cabin with natural light. Drivers have the option of Windsor leather with a signature diamond pattern for added flair, or a “Kvadrat” textile made up of Alcantara and a polyester/wool blend. This is gaining a lot of interest as the car industry loves leather. Established car makers depend on leather to give a “premium” feel. However, not everyone is sold because leather is expensive, hard, cold, and unforgiving. Cloth seats, by contrast, will often give a budget or “cheap” appearance - however, with the Kvadrat option, Land Rover is trying to change this. In a premium “luxury” vehicle, this textile is the first of its kind to be offered, and it is unlikely to be the last. The infotainment interface is impressively simple and elegant. Touch Pro Duo featuring two 10-inch touchscreen TFT displays - makes its new home in the Velar’s centre stack. One is located in the middash area, and the other is found just near the drive selector. The lack of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay capabilities is disappointing, to say the least. However, the quick processor time and crisp graphics are impressive and create a great system. Under the hood, Canadians have a choice of two engines: a 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 180 horsepower and 317 lb-ft. of torque, or a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine with 380 horse-

For those who wish to test out the Velar’s off-roading capabilities, there is a bevy of technological assists at your disposal. These include All-Terrain Progress Control, and a 360-degree camera system that show all regions around the vehicle. But more importantly, the Velar has all the off-road capabilities expected in a Range Rover; so even though you may never this luxury vehicle off-road, it will go to places you can’t imagine. And if you wish to use their Velar to tow goods, you will be happy to hear that the Velar will pull up to 5,500 pounds. The base model Velar S starts at $62,000 (with the 2.0-litre engine) and at $64,200 (with the V6 engine). If you want a completely decked out version, the Velar R-Dynamic HSE with V6 will set you back $82,600. And for the collector, a premium first edition Velar costs a whopping $95,000. With such an impressive array of features, sleek design, luxury components and rugged, strong capabilities, one can only assume that it would also come with an impressive price tag. About the only thing to keep in mind is that traditionally, Land Rovers have not been as reliable as its Japanese competitors, so you may want to buy that extended warranty after all. While this may deter some from the 2018 Range Rover Velar, it is very clear that you get a lot of value for your money. The Velar is definitely a vehicle to keep your eye for this year.

With a drag coefficient of only 0.32, the Velar is the most aerodynamic Ranger Rover ever. According to Land Rover, the Velar can go from 0 to 100km/hr in only 5.7 seconds with the V6 engine. The engine is smooth and solid, though perhaps not as refined as engines found in BMWs. The handling is good and predictable, but not as sporty or fun-to-drive as the Porsche Macan. The bottomline is that the Velar provides a silky driving experience expected from a Range Rover and should satisfy anyone who drives this cruiser.

The emergence ofQUALEY clean energy vehicles over the past two BY BLAIR decades has been a gradual one – but the trend that has emerged over the last several months demonstrates we may be entering the dawn of a new era in electric, hydrogen and plug-in hybrid vehicle sales. BC has the highest per capital EV adoption rate in Canada and also lead in market share of electric vehicle sales in this country at 3.7 per cent. In 2017, the CEVforBCTM program saw almost 1,800 CEVforBCTM program applications processed for clean energy vehicles – a 20 per cent increase over 2016. Between April and June of this year, more than 1,400 applications were paid out to consumers. This is an exciting, but equally challenging, time for auto manufacturers, dealers, governments and consumers. We are seeing an increasingly positive response from consumers but, adopting new technology takes time and requires proper infrastructure, such as charging stations, to be in place. As the Association representing new car dealers across BC, we recently conducted independent research involving 500 drivers, province-wide - to get a snapshot of opinions on the issue of EVs and factors that may motivate or hinder greater adoption of clean energy vehicles.

Some of the more interesting findings, include the following: • 6% of drivers report that their primary vehicle is electric, a proportion that jumps to 15% among those aged 18-to-34 • More than nine-in-ten drivers of electric vehicles (92%) are satisfied with their choice • Two-in-five drivers (40%) are “definitely” or “probably” considering purchasing a new vehicle in the next 12 months • More than three-in-five drivers (63%) say they have “definitely” (27%) or “probably” (36%) thought about purchasing an electric vehicle. • Price (39%) is the most important consideration, followed by fuel consumption (20%), reliability (also 20%), safety (8%), comfort (5%) and the environment (also 5%).

Chrysler award marks 40 years at Willowbrook Chrysler

Back in the late spring of 1978, new BC resident Doug Seal proudly opened the doors to Willowbrook Motors at its then much smaller but still current location on Langley Bypass. The newly opened Willowbrook Motors had a staff of 8 people including 2 mechanics and displayed a range of vehicles from American Motors (AMC) made up of the Jeep, Hudson and Nash vehicle brands. Two of those brands have long since gone but Jeep remains a market leader in its sector. Fast forward 40 years and Brian Walsh, District Operations Manager for FCA Canada was on hand to thank Doug and his team at Willowbrook Chrysler for their commitment to the brand over the past four decades. Besides having a great range of trucks, SUVs and cars to sell,

Doug attributes much of their success to his team’s desire to treat all customers fairly. The business now employs over 90 people and has recently expanded to open Willowbrook Used Car Centre occupying the adjacent lot. This convenient addition means they can now better display one of the biggest used vehicle inventories in the Lower Mainland Another reason people come from far and wide to Willowbrook Motors is the prestigious Dodge Viper. Doug has been a Viper enthusiast since the car’s introduction in the early 90’s and having this sought after performance model in his own showroom has further fueled his passion. It’s no surprise that since 2002, Willowbrook became the biggest Viper dealer in Canada adding further to their industry reputation. Although currently out of production there are always several

prime examples of this modern day classic in their showroom. Over the years the original location has doubled in size to accommodate the huge new vehicle inventory that Willowbrook Chrysler maintains to keep up with current demand. They are regularly one of the top performing Chrysler Dealers in Western Canada and on pace to sell well over 1000 new vehicles again this year, a far cry from the 143 they sold in their first year in business! A SURPRISING STAR

HYUNDAI Believe it or not, the Hyundai Elantra GT was first introduced back in 2001, when compact hatchbacks were popular and SUVs were still relatively rare. Now in fourth generation, we have an all-new Elantra GT in the Hyundai lineup for 2018. This time, Hyundai BY DAVID CHAO has drawn on the company’s European counterparts to help design the vehicle and tweak the performance, and it has paid off handsomely. Somewhat different from the Elantra Sedan, the Elantra GT is a sporty, compact hatchback with a lot to offer. The Elantra GT is a bit of a “sleeper car,” as many people simply wouldn’t notice it when they see one on the street – partly because of the generic design – but the overall packaging and fun-to-drive factor are fantastic. While the Elantra GT doesn’t look unique in any way, it is handsome enough for the average driver with modern touches and curves. This hatchback has a sporty feel and was originally designed in Europe, even though Hyundai is a South Korean automaker. Clean lines and a brand-new cascading front grille mark the redesigned Elantra GT. The interior is surprisingly well designed and well equipped with standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel - a highly sought-after feature during a Canadian winter. The interior appears very practical and well-laid out, with soft touch plastics and big, easy-to-use buttons.

Safety standard features include only blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert and a backup camera. Upgrading to a higher trim level will afford you other such options such as 17-inch or 18-inch wheels, keyless entry, dual exhaust tips, lumbar leather seats, LED headlights among others. A giant, panoramic sunroof option is another upgrade-worthy item. With regards to the technology, the Elantra GT comes standard with an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a real bonus for the new generation of younger buyers who expects these features. The touchscreen is perched atop the front console rather than tucked away inside of the dash for better visability. New for 2018 is the Hyundai “BlueLink Telematics”, which connects your car to an app on your phone. This allows you to do such things as remote starting, “find your car,” send an emergency alert in the event of a crash, and even locking and unlocking. This feature, while convenient, is currently only available on the top-level Sport Ultimate trim. With 705 litres of cargo capacity, the Elantra GT has plenty of room for storage. The 2018 Elantra GT comes in 4 trim levels in Canada: GL, GLS, Sport and Sport Ultimate. The GL and GLS trims come with a standard 2.0-litre four-cylinder GDI engine that generates 162 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft of torque. Opting for the Sport trims will get you a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine that produces 201 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft of torque. Drivers have the option of a six-speed

manual or a six or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. All Elantras are front-wheel drive, and therefore all wheel drive is not available as an option. Fuel consumption is excellent and is estimated at 9.4 L/100km (city) and 7.2 L/100km (highway) for the automatic transmission, and 9.8 L/100km (city) and 7.3 L/100km (highway) for the 2.0L with manual transmission. With a combined dual-clutch system the fuel economy is 8.7 L/100km and 8.4 L/100km. The chassis was designed and engineered in Germany, where the Elantra GT is known as the i30. A McPherson strut front suspension with 11-inch front rotors paired with a coupled torsion beam in the back make up the underbody. The GT handles better than cars like the Ford Focus or Toyota iM, but I would say that the VW Golf still performs slightly better and the Honda Civic isn’t too far behind the VW. All in all, potential buyers will be surprised at the level of performance and feel that the GT offers, especially at this attractive price point.

BY KEITH MORGAN There are no backwoods, bush whacking, pretensions about the all-new 2018 Nissan Kicks compact cute ute.

And the Japanese manufacturer is proud of that; declaring upfront that this five-seater sport utility lookalike is not for fording streams but for navigating the urban jungle. Small crossover utility vehicles are all the rage among new car buyers, especially among urban dwellers. They provide lots of space for loading up sports gear and offer drivers that desired commanding view above traffic . . . unless surrounded by similar vehicles! Interestingly, other car makers have hedged their bets by offering all-wheel-drive configurations, but the Kicks is front wheel drive only, bringing with it the desired frugal fuel economy. Indeed, those of us blessed with driving AWD crossovers through the backwoods on product launches often comment that’s the last time those tires will get muddy! “This emerging CUV class is exploding with new entries for a very good reason – the combination of flexible utility and high value is ideal for active, urban new vehicle buyers,” said Steve Rhind, director of marketing, Nissan Canada Inc. A cousin of mine describes this new breed of car as an urban assault vehicle, which always elicits a chuckle. But he’s right and Nissan must have overheard and taken his witty description to heart in designing the Kicks. Its designers took a long look at our urban infrastructure and built a vehicle equipped to take on the worst. As Nissan explains in its media briefing notes: “The Kicks has a ground clearance of 7.0 inches, allowing it to tackle poorly maintained roads and speed bumps with ease, without having an adverse effect on the handling.” Even the base Kicks S model, which sells for two bucks under 18-grand before taxes and delivery are added, is equipped with a standard features that rival big utes priced thousands higher. We’re not talking about cutesy add-ons here but such features as standard Automatic Emergency Braking with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), traction control, Hill Start Assist and a RearView monitor. All ideal for those challenges of urban driving, when one minute you are sailing along, the next encountering stop-start conditions. There are also fog lights, rear

passenger under seat heater ducts, a Bluetooth Handsfree Phone System, three USB ports and Intelligent Auto Headlights (I-AH). Step up to the SV for another $3,000-plus and the extras are loaded on, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Nissan Intelligent Key, heated front seats, Automatic Temperature Control, Easy Fill Tire Alert, a 7.0-inch display to name but a few of the most desirable. My guess is this will be the top seller. The top-of-the-line SR will take another $2,000 from you and in return give you LED low beam headlights, heated

outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Rear Cross Trafﬁc Alert (RCTA), Bose Personal Plus sound system, Intelligent Around View Monitor (I-AVM)3 equipped with Moving Object Detection (MOD) and Remote Engine Start for those chilly mornings. For the arithmetically challenged, that’s $22,798 for the SR, plus taxes and delivery. Think I’d be forgoing a few morning deluxe javas and saving for the SR. Nissan says the Kicks is aimed at a younger market, but this aging test driver would suggest the lines are blurring. Nissan loads up on the aforementioned infotainment features, arguing the target market demands them. Agreed, but so do I! Nissan describes the dashboard as that of a “gliding wing”: wonder how long it took them to come up with that description. Honestly, unless the look is clunky and old fashioned I never “ooh and aah” over cabin design. I want a functional and clear-line interior and the Kick delivers that, along with a sporty a ﬂat-bottom

steering wheel. The 6-way driver’s seat, 4-way adjustable front passenger seat and 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, offer many positional options for those aboard. Ample room for a family of five though I think it might be a squeeze on a journey for five amply-proportioned adults, if I can put it that way. I won’t waste words on describing the external appearance in minute detail other than to say it is a head turner. I’ll let the accompanying pictures help you visualize whether you see yourself in a Kicks. Every 2018 Kicks comes with a standard 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder, 125 h.p. engine under the hood with Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS). The steering wheel design is about as sporty as the Kicks gets. That’s not to say the Kicks is not nimble and peppy enough to get you out of stalled traffic and into the next lane quickly enough without fear of being rear ended by traffic approaching from the rear. It’s powerful enough for purpose! Loved the tight turning circle, ahem, not that I would attempt an illegal U-turn on a city street. Early numbers for this new model suggest the combined city/highway fuel consumption is going to be around 7.1 L/100kms. Around town that will likely creep up to around 7.5 plus, which was my real-world experience in hilly Kitsilano!
