In the full-size body-on-frame SUV market General Motors has the lions share of sales thanks to well-known names like the Chevy Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon and the iconic Cadillac Escalade. Ford has hopes to take on the GM stronghold with the first all-new Expedition in twenty years. Yes, Ford has made tweaks around the edges with its truck but leaving a product almost unchanged for that long does slow the enthusiasm for the vehicle. The goal at Ford was to build a truck that was better in every way than the GM offerings, giving potential buyers no reason to consider one. A lofty goal and one that will take considerable energy to get people to switch, but this new Expedition is a compelling vehicle and worth a closer look.

Just like full-size pickup trucks, it almost takes dynamite to get buyers to switch brands; these are the most loyal buyers in the industry. So, the engineers have utilized much of the same technology and engineering found in the best selling Ford

F-150 pickup and built it into the Expedition.

Underneath a truck like this sits a pickup platform with the body bolted on top, which is why it is referred to as a body-on-frame SUV. The latest F-150 is made of aluminum and the Expedition follows suit helping to reduce the weight by over 136kg to improve fuel economy and body rigidity. In fact, everything on the expedition that is painted metal is aluminum, something that luxury brands did not that long ago.

One of the major reasons to buy a big rig like this is to move people around but more importantly tow. The Expedition has a 9200lb towing capacity, so pulling a boat or camper up the Coquihalla will be a snap for this truck.

Under the hood beats a turbo V6 engine, no large V8 as is found in the GM products. Ford invested early in its EcoBoost technology and it has proven to be very popular with F-150 owners with buckets of torque to move a large truck like this and tow. Ecoboost means that Ford uses a smaller engine but turbocharges it. In this case it is a 3.5L V6

with 375hp and 470lb-ft of torque on regular gas. If the buyer chooses the top Platinum trim the output goes to 400hp but this requires premium fuel. Just like the F-150, this Expedition gets the allnew 10-speed transmission that was codeveloped with General Motors. That’s right, the competition. Ford takes it away and programs the shift software to its own needs, which they claim will be very different from GM. All Expedition models sold in Canada come with standard 4X4 traction.

The top Platinum also gets an adaptive suspension on top of the independent rear suspension found in all Expeditions. The GM competition does not use independent rear suspension and having a chance to drive through the canyons, north of Malibu California during the vehicle launch, plus an off-road course, this setup produces an amazingly refined ride.

Styling is what one would expect from Ford; a big grille framing a boxy design with a sharp accent crease down the side. Wheel sizes go all the way to 22-inches on the Platinum model and there is an FX4 model with a factory ready off-road package, which adds skid plates under the truck, added cooling capacity, unique running boards and wheels. The Expedition is sold in two sizes, the regular model and a longer wheelbase (230mm) model called Expedition MAX. The room inside is very spacious and open, and when the Platinum trim is chosen, it becomes almost a luxury truck. To those that want the ultimate, there is a version coming under the Lincoln brand called Navigator, and it will be arriving shortly. Stay tuned for that.

The in-dash technology is almost as important as the mechanical in this day and age and Ford gets it right here. The Expedition is equipped with the latest Sync3 system that is vastly improved over earlier, clumsy efforts. The screen is easy to use, the icons are logical and it works very well. There are USB plugs galore and there is even a wireless charging pad for enabled phones.

Advanced safety is also something that is becoming a buying differentiator for some and unfortunately the base model does not come standard with a pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, it’s part of an additional package. It is only the top Platinum model that gets this as standard equipment.

The Expedition starts at roughly $60,000, $73,000 for the Limited and $84,000 for the MAX Platinum; it’s a lot of money but in line with the GM products.

Ford certainly did throw a lot at their first all-new Expedition in twenty years. It has class leading towing, power and torque plus a wonderful on-road ride, thanks to the available adaptive suspension.

Time will tell if the Expedition can dent GM sales but this is a very good effort that was worth the wait.

One of North America’s bestselling cars received a major makeover for 2017, resulting in more passenger and cargo room and more power from two new engines. The CR-V uses a version of the same platform first developed for the currentgeneration Honda Civic. As a result there’s an extra four centimetres between the front and rear wheels that primarily benefit rear-seat passengers with more legroom. There’s also an extra three centimetres in overall length, but the gain in space behind the rear seats is primarily due to a redesigned body. A new dashboard has been installed in the taller and wider cabin with larger touch-screens and an available navigation

system supplied by Garmin. The CR-V’s standard powerplant is a turbocharged 1.5-litre I-4 (also used in the Honda Civic) that makes 190 horsepower and 179 poundfeet of torque. It’s matched with a continuously variable transmission.

Front-wheel-drive is standard while an upgrade to all-wheel drive is a relatively affordable option.

Also optional is Honda Sensing that encompasses adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert and lane-departure warning with lanekeeping assist.

New 10th-generation sedan for 2018. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that North America’s two leading sedans, the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, are completely redesigned for the 2018 model year. But it’s the Accord that displays the most radical adjustments, in terms of design and propulsion systems. Although the Accord is slightly shorter, Honda stretched the wheelbase by more than five centimetres for greater legroom, while lowering body height by 1.3 centimetres.

The body (sedan only as the coupe has been scratched) is attached to a stronger platform that Honda also says is significantly lighter.

For 2018, the Accord runs with a couple of turbocharged four-cylinder powerplants plus a non-turbo fourcylinder with an electric motor for the Hybrid. The base 192-horsepower

turbo replaces the previous 185-horsepower non-turbo 2.4-litre, while a largerdisplacement 2.0-litre turbo makes 252 horses. That’s less than the previous 278-horsepower V-6 option, but the turbo delivers more maximum torque that’s available throughout a wider rev range.

The base 1.5 gets a six-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable unit (CVT). The 2.0 also offers a manual gearbox, while a 10-speed automatic is optional. Honda is also promising a more efficient engine and battery pack for the Accord Hybrid.

LAMBORGHINI IS BACK IN THE UTILITY BUSINESS IN A BIG WAY, BUT THIS TIME THE COMPANY HAS URUS GONE IN A TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND MUCH MORE SENSIBLE DIRECTION WITH THE NEW 2019 URUS. Don’t think predominantly off-road, think Porsche Cayenne Turbo fighter. It’s a Lamborghini supercar to stress the intestines of the whole family. Instead of a supercar being a secondary purchase, it can be a daily driver for all seasons.

Named for the Spanish fighting bull, the Urus is actually much more sports car at heart than utility vehicle. It has all-wheel-drive, a wagon body, a full back seat and a square rear end that features a conventional lift gate, but the rest is pure pavement-eating high performance.

With its 641-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V-8 engine, the Urus accelerates to 200 km/h from rest in 12.8 seconds, and has a top speed of 306 km/h, or about 190 mph.

All that power connects to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive. There are six selectable driving modes in what Lamborghini calls the Tamburo, allowing the pilot to set the car up for optimum handling on any road surface, or even any non-road surface, including mud, gravel or snow.

The Urus’s basic platform is familiar: Since Lamborghini is part of the VW Group, it shares its platform with the Porsche Cayenne, the Audi Q7 and the Bentley Bentayga luxury liner. The Urus might not be in a class by itself, but it’s certainly in an elite class where it doesn’t take long to call the roll.

Why a family ride from a sports-car maker? Simple.

Utility vehicles sell in much higher volumes than twoseat sports cars. While Porsche purists cringed when the Cayenne was first launched, it sold in high enough volumes to keep Porsche profitable and allow its traditional sports cars to survive and flourish.

Lamborghini is expecting a similar result with the Urus. The company projects that it will sell 3,500 a year, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but only about 1,300 cars were sold in North America in 2016.

Expect the Urus to be a big seller, relatively speaking.

Already, the new Lamborghini is drawing favorable press.

“The jagged lines and typical Lamborghini flare make for an SUV with the presence of a supercar, the performance to match, and the everyday usability of a conventional SUV,” wrote Michael Whiteley for AutomobileMag.com. “You can’t argue with the facts, either - the Urus is the lowest SUV on the market, offers the lowest seating position, and is the fastest. For those facts alone it gets my seal of approval.”

Naturally, though, the Urus has its own special touches, from the aggressive body contours on the fenders to the sumptuous and oh-so-Italian-leather interior.

Christian Wardlaw of NYDailyNews.com cut right to the chase. “With U.S. lawmakers cutting taxes for businesses, corporations, and the wealthiest of Americans, Lamborghini could not have better timed the introduction of the Urus,” he wrote.

“Undoubtedly, this new Super SUV will prove quite popular in money-drenched enclaves stretching from Brookville to Beverly Hills.”

Then there’s the entire suite of technology that allows the Urus to be enjoyed as a daily driver, or as a wicked fast sports car on the track, or even as a

Porsche continues to ramp up to build the Mission E, automaker’s first battery-powered sports car. Porsche officials say the new Mission E will have a range of 500 kilometres, with an 80 per cent battery charge achieved in 15 minutes. It’s fast, too: acceleration to 100 km/h from rest will take less than 3.5 seconds. Porsche is encouraged by the fact that 60 per cent of its Panamera sales in Europe so far are for the hybrid version. That suggests the Mission E will be well received when it launches at the end of 2019.

New McLaren has a big name to live up to:

British automaker McLaren Automotive has named its latest supercar after one of the greatest drivers in Formula One history, the late Brazilian legend and three-time World Driving Champion Ayrton Senna. The McLaren Senna is “legalized for road use, but not sanitized to suit it,” and “… deliberately compromises McLaren’s trademark breadth of supercar daily usability,” the automaker said. In other words, the 789-horsepower, 1,200-kilogram Senna is best suited for track use only.

BIG MOTOWN SHOW IS ALL ABOUT TRUCKS AND SPORT-UTES

BY KEITH MORGAN DETROIT - The granddaddy of all auto shows is underway and it’s back to the future on the show floor at Cobo Hall.

Ram is offering a much-revamped 1500 series pickup and Ford has come to the party with a reintroduction of its Ford Ranger and update of the F-Series.

Yours truly got a pre-show sneak peek at the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado at an offsite location. The full-size truck is a celebration of 100 years of making these popular work horses. The early trucks were inspired by Chevy factory workers, who modified vehicles to haul around heavy supplies.

Eco-friendly electric and hybrid vehicles are wellrepresented but the excitement is being generated with good old fashioned trucks and sport utes (well, not old fashioned in style but you get my drift).

Light trucks now account for almost two-thirds of vehicle sales and the domestic brands are rolling out updated and new versions of their flat beds.

They are still trusty steeds for the workers and trades. But today they are loaded with the hi-tech driving aids and creature comforts one usually associates with premium brand sedans. And nowhere is this more in evidence than under the hood, on the flat bed and in the cab of the rugged looking Silverado.

Eight models, each tailored with distinct features and attributes, are offered to cater to a range of customers with differing needs.

It has a longer wheelbase, more passenger and cargo volume, but the use of lighter but equally strong materials has made it more than 200 kilos lighter. The Silverado 1500 bed features the best-in-class cargo volume of 1,840 litres (65 cu ft), which is around 20 percent greater than the competition.

There are six engine/transmission choices, including an all-new Duramax 3.0L inline-six diesel. Both the 3.0L diesel and 6.2L engines are paired with a new HydraMatic 10-speed automatic transmission as well as start/ stop technology to improve fuel economy.

“Truck customers told us they want the perfect truck for them and not a ‘one size fits most’ truck, compromised for the masses,” said Mike Simcoe, vice president, Global Design, General Motors. “That insight shaped our design strategy with eight distinct models, each with a unique personality to fit different customers, from the affordable Work Truck to the luxurious High Country.”

The interior design was also strongly influenced by customer feedback. Truck owners use their vehicles for both hauling cargo and transporting people, so top priorities were more comfortable seating, more interior cargo storage and more functional, easy-to-use controls.

Accordingly, the cab has been stretched, with crew-cab models now offering 3 inches of additional rear-seat legroom for an impressive 44.5 inches of front legroom and 43.8 inches of rear legroom.

The Silverado was already the first pickup to offer 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, wireless phone charging and OnStar safety and security features.

The Silverado prices will be announced later prior to its availability this Fall.

General Motors is Cruising into the near future with an autonomous driving vehicle, lacking such basic controls as steering wheel, pedals and all manual controls.

The Cruise AV, based on the successful Bolt Electric Vehicle (EV), is set for mass production in 2019 if the US Department of Transportation approves this radical departure from traditional car manufacturing.

GM says it’s a world’s first production ready vehicle capable of operating safely without a driver intervention. As GM cutely notes: “It doesn’t drink and drive, doesn’t text and drive, doesn’t get upset, doesn’t get tired, never gets

distracted and doesn’t produce any emissions.”

With its advanced sensor systems, the Cruise AV ‘sees’ the environment around it, in 360 degrees, 24 hours a day. It identifies pedestrians in a crosswalk, spots an object darting into its path and responds accordingly. It can maneuver through construction cones, yield to emergency vehicles and react to avoid collisions.

GM says it combined the best of Detroit, Silicon Valley and its teams around the world. The Cruise was developed in one of the most complex environments possible — San Francisco — to ensure that it would drive safely even in the

most unpredictable circumstances and conditions.

The vehicles swap information with each other about road conditions and even detect and record potholes! Its real world introduction will be as a ride share and delivery vehicle.

Ford had built a time machine with styling that managed to skip the 1980s altogether ...

WHEN THE TAURUS WAS REPLACED BY THE FIVE HUNDRED, NEW FORD BOSS ALAN MULALLY WAS DUMBFOUNDED AND ORDERED A REWORKING OF THE CAR AND A REINSTITUTION OF THE TAURUS NAME IN 2007.

THE SECOND-GENERATION TAURUS WASN’T NEARLY AS POPULAR AS THE FIRST, ALTHOUGH IT WAS JUST AS GROUND-BREAKING. PERHAPS THE STYLING WAS TOO FAR OUT THERE FOR THE 1990S CROWD.

“Have you driven a Ford . . . lately?” was a catchy musical jingle in the 1980s, but before the release of the company’s ground-breaking Taurus, the answer from many prospective buyers would likely have been, “no.”

By the mid-1980s, Ford was having trouble moving the kind of passenger-car iron necessary to maintain a healthy balance sheet. The full-size LTD and Marquis models were slumping and its high-volume-low-profit Tempo and Topaz compacts, although popular, were being outsold and outclassed by the massive incursion of Japanese imports.

The arrival of the Taurus, along with its close-relative Mercury Sable in the autumn of 1985, gave the beleaguered corporation a much needed shot in the arm and introduced true “Euro” styling in a North American-built car. Smooth and modern looking (at least compared to the other boxy machines on the road), the Taurus soon became the car every family wanted to own and one that couldn’t have come at a better time for Ford.

Available in four-door sedan and wagon body styles, these cars eschewed the conventional squared-off look that, at the time, was popular with nearly all foreign and domestic manufacturers, adopting instead a design that came to be known as the inverted soap dish or jellybean body.

Other body features included side glass that was positioned flush to the aircraft-style doors, which were cut into the roofline. There wasn’t an opera window to be found anywhere and padded vinyl roofs were definitely not included on the option sheet.

The Taurus interior had plenty of space for five passengers and their luggage, something many competing midsize cars were lacking. The various switches and knobs were large and easy to find and the dials and the control panel lacked the plastic wood trim, pretend-chrome paint and other tasteless garnish

from the past. Ditto for the exterior, where the only brightwork was on the wheel covers.

On base models, motivation was supplied by a 90-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder powerplant borrowed from the Tempo/Topaz line. However, the most popular choice was the 140-horse 3.0-litre V-6 connected to a four-speed automatic transmission.

Supported by a heavy schedule of print and TV advertising, the new Taurus struck a chord with buyers who scurried to their nearest dealers to scope out this radically different Ford. Demand shot through the roof and the company scrambled to fill the orders. A major surprise was the popularity of the wagon, which would eventually represent nearly one-third of all Taurus sales.

The automotive press heaped considerable accolades on the new model, praising its forward-thinking design, roominess, comfortable, controlled ride and Euro-style handling qualities. By the end of its second year, the Taurus was North America’s top-selling passenger car, a position it would enjoy for many seasons.

In 1988, a larger and torquier 3.8-litre V-6 became available, followed shortly after by the performanceoriented Taurus SHO, short for Super High Output.

At a time when most automakers were hard-pressed to come up with 150 horsepower for their bread-andbutter V-6 models, the SHO delivered an impressive 220, thanks to a 3.0-litre 24-valve DOHC V-6 designed

by Yamaha that was attached to a Mazda-built fivespeed manual transmission. At a price about $20,000, the SHO cost about $5,000 more than a well-equipped LX sedan.

The SHO was never designed to be a big-volume model, which was a good thing as its five-speed gearbox and almost complete lack of visual identification limited the car’s popularity. A four-speed automatic transmission would replace the five-speed

a few years later. But for enthusiast sedan pilots, the SHO’s competency in the acceleration, handling and braking departments was a treat for the senses.

The original Taurus/Sable bodies and interiors were spruced up for 1992, prior to their complete replacement three years later. By that time, the smooth look had been copied by nearly every manufacturer, making it difficult to discern between most makes.

What was once a unique and novel style had turned into a plague of copycats. Sedans had become boring again.

With the launch of the second-generation “ovoid” (oval or egg-shaped-theme) look in 1995, Ford attempted to repeat its breakthrough success of the first Taurus. This design, however, was widely criticized and the Taurus ultimately surrendered its Number One position to less audacious sheetmetal.

A revamp based on the Ford Five Hundred platform paled in comparison to the original’s ground-breaking nature and the current Taurus, as sharp looking as it is, is fighting in one of the toughest categories there is, ironically made that way by the original Taurus.

In the three decades since its launch, however, Ford’s original styling leader barely warrants a glance today. That’s what happens when a revolutionary crowd-pleasing upstart like the Taurus becomes the benchmark for an entire industry.
