The seven-seater family van that sips gas at a miserly rate

Drive carefully and you can enjoy as much as 53 kilometres of silent running in the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.

Once the large battery has been exhausted the 3.6-litre V6 engine, aided by a fuel-saving Atkinson Cycle system, kicks in to take you the rest of the way.

In fact, on a full tank the total range can exceed 900 kilometres.

The hybrid power system reduces the horsepower enjoyed by the regular Pacifica, but the two electric motors combine with the gas engine to give you

that acceleration needed when passing on the freeway.

Yes, the battery may be drained enough to prevent pure EV driving but while driving it does recharge through regenerative braking, which recaptures energy normally lost through deceleration. That’s what enables the lift needed during acceleration. On a long journey it’s possible to recharge enough to enjoy more short

spurts of EV only driving. In theory if you are light on the pedal, master coasting and work with the CVT (continuously variable transmission) you could even see fuel consumption drop to a miserly 2.6L/100kms.

The large battery is warrantied for 10 years or 160,000 kilometres. It is a significant fact because many drivers have expressed anxiety about the longevity of the batteries used. Real life experience shows it not to be of great concern. Nevertheless, Chrysler has made a shrewd move here by standing by its product.

On home charge it takes 12 hoursplus to recharge but the new 240-volt chargers – which will soon attract a rebate in BC – will top up the battery in two hours. Interestingly, Natural Resources Canada estimate the annual fuel costs of the hybrid is about half the cost of a conventional vehicle.

On the safety front, there are more than 100 standard features, including 360-degree view rear camera, park assist, collision warning and active braking, plus adaptive cruise control.

The seven-seater offers power to the people front and back plus USBs for all! – as an option, dual screens are available for the rear of the front seats, providing movie entertainment for bored youngsters.

A six-speaker sound system is standard fare, but audiophiles can upgrade to an Alpine system with 14 speakers or even to a premium Harmon-Kardon system with 20 speakers.

It’s a comfy limo for the family and when the kids tire of movies and games they can tip back the seats and enjoy the natural views offered by the fabulous panoramic roof.

Starting sticker price is $51,981 but currently the Clean Energy Vehicle programs grants $5,000 rebates to purchasers of plug-in hybrids.

Class-leading interior refinement; a quiet cabin and a premium feel on the road ...

There are some product introductions that are bigger than others. The recent launch event for the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 was held in sunny Arizona, where Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Canada (FCA) highlighted just how important this new truck is, maybe the biggest vehicle launch of 2018.

The Ram brand represents almost forty percent of all FCA sales in Canada and a big part of that is the Ram 1500, its mainline truck. That works out to be just under 104,000 Ram products sold last year.

A huge number, so this new 2019 model is a big deal.

To be honest it would take five stories to go over all the new features in this truck, there is that much going on. So, let’s jump into the main features that benefit the customer.

Ram believes that a truck should be made of steel, not aluminum or other composite products. Ram customers are loyal because of durability and FCA wants to ensure there is no reason to change brands. With that in mind, the engineering goal was to make this truck slightly larger in every dimension but be lighter than the outdoing model.

An overall weight savings of 102kg was achieved by

switching to ninety eight percent highstrength lightweight steel throughout the chassis and cab. Yes, aluminum is used as well, on the hood and tailgate but the parts that need to be tough, are.

The current Ram truck will still be sold alongside this new truck as a value offering for the foreseeable future. And this was already a wonderful vehicle, offering classleading interior refinement; a quiet cabin and a premium feel on the road. This allnew 2019 model improves on all of these areas and in many ways is the truck to beat in its class.

The interior is a showcase of premium materials, logically designed controls and now roomier. The Crew-Cab is the biggest seller, accounting for seventy percent of all Ram 1500 sales and it has been stretched by four inches, making the rear legroom and headroom, limousine like; the rear seats can even be reclined for long trips. The rear seats also flip up to show a perfectly flat floor, plus the hidden bins under the floor are now much larger. The front seats are treated to available real wood, metal and leather accents that looks right out of a premium sedan. The centre screen is now 5-inches on the base model, including a backup camera. There are two 8.4-inch screens available, one with and one without navigation. The big story is the available 12-inch centre screen on the top trims that is basically the equivalent of two 8.4-inch screens on top of each other. These are fully

adjustable and can be split to show just one feature, like navigation on the huge screen. All screens have Apple Car Play and Android Auto.

The capability and ride have also been improved. Ram has kept what works so well and improved upon it. The new chassis is stronger and lighter allowing the 5-link rear suspension to work with the rear coil springs and new frequency damping shocks to produce a premium on-road feel. There are actuators on the side of the chassis that detect vibration and can produce an opposite vibration to eliminate it. This along with in-cabin noise cancelling technology makes the interior very quiet.

The 3.6L V6 and 5.7L Hemi V8 are back but with new technology called E-Torque. (This is standard on the V6 and optional on the V8.) By using a separate 48-volt battery system, the alternator has been replaced with a generator/motor, which allows the engine to implement automatic start/stop technology. When restarting the engine, the 48-volt system turns the electric motor and provides up to 130lb-ft of torque for initial launch. This helps eliminate any tough restarting and reduces fuel consumption by turning off the fuel as often as possible. Fans of the 3.0L EcoDiesel need to wait a little longer, that engine will return but closer to 2019.

All of these advancements along with improved aerodynamic efficiency have combined to improve fuel economy by ten percent plus improve the payload and towing capacity by twenty percent. The payload is now 2,300lbs and the towing

capacity is 12,750lbs.

One area that I wish FCA, Ford and GM would improve is the way they price trucks.

This new Ram 1500 starts at roughly $46,000 for a base model with 4X4 and goes up to almost $70,000 for a top Longhorn trim. This sounds like a lot of money and it is. The reality is that all brands do this, with a high, suggested sale-price and then putting incentives in place to actually move the trucks. Why, oh why, can’t

all these brands just come to market with realistic prices that people actually pay instead of this incentive driven system. Rant over.

As mentioned, there could be many more articles written about all the new technology and refinement that went into this truck. To be honest, this Ram 1500 moves to the top of the class in terms of ride, interior refinement and mid-pack for payload and towing. The reasons why truck buyers choose one brand over the other has a lot to do with interior amenities and that is where this new truck wins.

Ford has a new diesel F-150 coming soon, GM has all-new Sierra and Silverado trucks arriving soon too. Let the truck wars begin.

Athletic appearance and enhanced comfort

BMW didn’t mess too much with a good thing when it introduced the all-newthird-generation X3. The designers toyed only slightly with its overall appearance and reserved their remake for the interior and under the hood.

Worthy of note is for the first time on a BMW X model, the front fascia features a muscular “three-dimensional” kidney grille and fog lights featuring a hexagonal design.

A downward-sloping roof spoiler and twin exhaust tailpipes add to the bold appearance.

Call this an SUV at your peril, it’s a crossover offering the best of a sports ute and luxury sedan and BMW coined the

term SAV, which stands for Sports Activity Vehicle. The new standard trailer hitch makes you want to head to the lake with a speedboat!

The X3 is available here in two iterations, the xDrive 30i and the X3 M40i, each with an eight-speed auto transmission. Power in the entry-edition uses the brand’s 2.0-litre turbo-four, tweaked to generate 248 horsepower.

The fuel consumption numbers are 10.8 L/100 km/8 L/100 km (city/hwy). The M40i features a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six, with 355 horses at its disposal, and truly uses them to get to 100 km/h in only 4.6 seconds.

The chassis has had a bunch of updates, boosting the aluminum content and adding almost 5.6 centimetres to the wheelbase.

Inside there’s a new layout, more safety and convenience features, improved ergonomics and the fascinating gesture-controlled iDrive infotainment system with a 10.25-inch screen. There’s a full-colour heads-up display and tri-zone climate control, along with a 40/20/40 split-

folding rear seat, optional heated and cooled seats all around, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.

A major enhancement in the comfort zone is the threezone automatic climate control, which adds separate temperature controls for the rear compartment. Newly available convenient functions include front ventilated seats for driver and front passenger to maximize comfort on warm days. A roomier feel can also be realized with the 250 mm longer panoramic glass moonroof.

It’s safety loaded too: blind-spot monitoring, forwardcollision warning with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control and other things too numerous to mention in this space.

To enhance rear compartment comfort, the angle of the standard 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrests can be adjusted individually. This feature also allows the backrests to be released remotely from the load compartment, which expands the standard load capacity of 550 to 1600 litres.

There are some additions in packages, the Luxury Package features a chrome grille, two-tone bumpers and a faux-leather dashboard. The M Sport Package includes an aero kit, gloss black trim bits, larger wheels and a few updated interior pieces.

The starter price is $48,000.

The luxury SUV that turns heads and changes buyers’ minds

The Lincoln MKC has been turning heads and changing minds since its introduction in 2014.

The luxury SUV has introduced more people to the Lincoln brand than any other vehicle, with nearly half of all clients coming from other brands. Women account for more than half of MKC sales and, in turn, are driving growth in this luxury segment, which has increased 29 percent during the past decade.

Its bold new design and driver-focused technologies, such as automatic emergency braking and pedestrian collision avoidance, could well drive still more into Lincoln ownership.

The unmistakable signature grille and one-of-a-kind front design sets it apart from other prestige SUVs with which it shares the road. Detailed LED headlamps are designed to illuminate the road brightly enough to ease eyestrain.

Love the luminous Lincoln “welcome mat light” that appears beneath both front doors to greet driver and passenger. The available panoramic roof is a great option for those who yearn for lots of natural light during daytime travel.

Inside, soft- touch materials abound, and available heated and cooled seats guarantee all-season comfort.

A suite of driver-assist technologies includes Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. This system is designed to reduce the severity of – and in some cases eliminate – frontal collisions, including those involving pedestrians.

It uses advanced radar and camera sensors to provide a collision warning to the driver. If the driver does not respond in time, the system can automatically apply the brakes.

Ford’s 50th Anniversary Mustang revives silver screen legend

The all-new limited-edition Ford Mustang Bullitt honours the classic Steve McQueen Bullitt movie car from 1968, which featured a memorable car chase through San Francisco streets.

The Bullitt features a retuned 5.0-litre V8 engine that packs at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque and tops out at 260 km/h.

As a special-edition model due out this summer – the all-new Mustang Bullitt is equipped with a manual

transmission, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original. The vehicle packages all Mustang GT Premium and Performance Package content into a vehicle that maintains the original Bullitt’s understated persona.

An active valve performance exhaust system is standard with new Black NitroPlate™ exhaust tips, and retuned to give the car a signature burble.

Other standard equipment includes a heated leather steering wheel and a 12-inch alldigital LCD instrument cluster, identical in function to the cluster introduced on the 2018

“This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “As a designer, it’s my favourite Mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything – it’s just cool.”

Exterior paint choices are limited to Shadow Black and the classic Dark Highland Green – as worn in the movie.

Other features that pay tribute to the car McQueen drove are subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminum wheels, red painted Brembo™ brakes, and a unique black front grille.

“When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. “It has to have the right attitude, it has to be

unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass.”

That reputation was born after a Mustang GT fastback played a prominent role in the 1968 movie, and most notably in a chase scene that set new standards in filmmaking. The film’s nearly 10-minutelong sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco. Two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the classic Warner Bros. movie “Bullitt” that debuted in theaters on Oct. 17, 1968.

Qashqai offers plenty of SUV features for less cash

The 2018 Nissan Qashqai SUV is just arriving in Canadian showrooms, but it was worth the wait.

The five-seater has been a top seller for years in Europe and many Canadians have already been exposed to its versatility as a popular rental car during visits to the ‘old country’.

Kia Forte5 Turbo

2 0 1 8 I tackled over 350km of urban, suburban, highway and dirt roads within a day and did it easily with Kia’s Forte5 SX Turbo.

The ‘5’ means it has five doors. All five points of entry lead to a roomy interior, that’s quite well designed and appointed for an econo hatch. And it’s stylish - red accents on the sharply seats and the dash hint at the sportiness of the vehicle (think VW GTI), but they are comfy as well. In the middle of winter, I hit the heated seat switch many a time. I am sure the vented seat option will be a hit in summer.

On the road, the Forte5 Turbo handled highway speeds with ease, with the lane-keep assist. The system senses that you are crossing over the line, and if your turn signal is not on, will gently turn the steering wheel to put you back on track. If you do use your turn signal and

Around town and on small twisty roads, the Forte5 Turbo felt planted, without being too stiff. In fact, the Forte5 was fun to toss around a little.

The 1.6L DOHC 16-valve Inline 4 cylinder engine puts out 201-hp at 6000RPM and 195 lb-ft. torque at a low 1500RPM. Mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch Sportmatic automatic transmission, the four-cylinder helped me get ahead of traffic anytime I wanted to.

Navigation is made easy with Apple CarPlay. My music, phone book, and even text messages, appeared conveniently, and safely, in the dash. The Forte5 can also be used with Android Auto.

Like most hot hatches, the Forte5 Turbo was designed to provide practicality and everyday livability as a compact car while packing extra performance for discerning drivers. The extra luxury features and slew of safety features pushes this car into the top group.

Seating for four adults is the norm here, and a fifth adult can fit, as long as they place nice with their seatmates. With 657L (23.2 cu. ft.) of cargo capacity, with the rear seats up, you can take along enough sandwiches and drinks should the five of you decide to have a picnic.
