As far as automotive ideas go, the Amphicar never really held water, even if it could drive on it. However, this unusual amphibian somehow made it into production and actually managed to attract a small knot of nautically minded buyers. These hardy souls thought nothing of venturing off terra firma in search of an oddball adventure, even though the going was slow and not without some peril. But even with those strikes against it, the Amphicar made people smile.

Watertight door seals, oars, bilge pump and seating for four are all part of the considerations of a car that can travel on both water and land. Two propellers are turned when the Amphicar is on water. On land, the back wheels receive the power. A 43-HORSEPOWER GASOLINE FOUR-CYLINDER ENGINE MADE FOR SLOW TRAVEL ON LAND AND SUBSTANTIALLY SLOWER TRAVEL IN THE WATER. AT LEAST IT COULD DO BOTH. The vehicle was the brainchild of Hans Trippel, a German engineer who helped build amphibious landing craft during the Second World War. After the war, Trippel spent much of his time developing prototypes of a civilian automobile that could also double as a boat. By the late 1950s, the erstwhile inventor had hooked up with Harold Quandt, whose family controlled part of BMW. Quandt put up the money to get the Amphicar project under way, helped secure factory space in what was then West Germany, negotiated the purchase of necessary parts from other manufacturers and helped establish a distribution network for the finished product. Both men agreed that North America offered the greatest sales potential for a leisure-oriented product such as the Amphicar and most of the production and promotion was aimed at prospective buyers on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. For motivation, an English Triumph-Herald-built 43-horsepower 1.2-litre engine was installed behind the back wheels. It was connected to the rear axle via a special Porsche 356-based two-part transmission that provided four forward gears (plus reverse) on land and a two-speed (forward and reverse) gearbox that turned a pair of propellers during the floatation phase. Top land speed was in the 105-115-km/h range, while
around seven knots (about 13 km/h) was all you could expect in the water. Most of the suspension pieces were supplied by Mercedes-Benz, while an Italian company provided the molds used for the stamped-steel body panels.
The Amphicar was launched - literally - in 1961 at both the New York Auto Show and the Miami, Florida Boat Show, attracting much curiosity but few serious buyers at either event. Priced in the vicinity of $3,000, similar to a Chevrolet Impala or a decent outboard ski boat, the Amphicar’s partcar, part-dingy novelty status generated only limited appeal.
The 3.9-metre-long Amphicar was built tall enough and Other than its quirky nature and considerable maintenance given 25 centimetres of ground clearance so it could go up requirements, the Amphicar’s all-steel body was corrosionand down a steep boat launch as well as maintain prone, particularly in the North-Eastern rust-belt buoyancy without being swamped. The Amphicar drove pretty much like a regular car on dry land, although its high centre of gravity and rearbiased weight distribution demanded slow cornering speeds. Getting wet was the easy part. Captains would simply drive into the water, shift the transmission into neutral and engage the props using the separate two-speed shifter. The front wheels acted as rudders, but first-timers had to note that stabbing the brake pedal was useless in the water.
Today, a small but loyal group of Amphicar owners around the world continues to keep in touch, holding rallys (or swim meets, as some are called), sharing restoration tips and swapping stories about the fun times they’ve had with their motorized personal floatation devices. They also keep hoping that the auto/boat concept pioneered by the Amphicar will once again float.

Tips to consider Your journey starts here.
when choosing a new family vehicle ...
Summer is just around the corner, and for many, that means planning for family vacations, road trips and a plethora of other fun family activities.
BY BLAIR QUALEY
Whether you’re gearing up for a cross-country family road trip or looking for an everyday commuter vehicle, here’s some tips to keep in mind if you’re in the market for a new family car. First and foremost, safety should be your number one priority when shopping for a new family vehicle. The website for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) is a good starting point to research which vehicles are at the top of their game in terms of safety. Through repeated crash tests, the IIHS evaluates new vehicles, both on how well it protects occupants in crash situations as well as the effectiveness of crash avoidance technology. For used vehicles, the IIHS site is also a good place to start because crash test results from vehicles going back to 1990 are available as well.
may want to consider purchasing a vehicle equipped with collision avoidance systems to keep your family safe when you’re on the road. The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) emphasizes that forward collision warning, lane departure warning, side assist view and adaptive headlights are systems that are the most effective at protecting vehicle occupants. As a rule of thumb, children under 12 are safest in the backseat, and younger children need to be safely secured in a car or booster seat appropriate for their size and age, which leads us to the next consideration for purchasing a new family vehicle – space and versatility. For parents with two or more car seats in their vehicle, buckling up multiple children while on a tight schedule can be a hassle, especially if your vehicle is also tight on interior space.
Another good resource available is the J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). IQS serves as an industry benchmark for new-vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership. The study models performance and comparison of individual models to similar models in respective segments.
While a two-door coupe is out of the question for many families, a hulking SUV can be impractical for city life in terms of parking and maneuverability. The key is that bigger is not always better – look for vehicles that can easily transform cargo space into passenger space, and vice versa.
In addition to crash test ratings and quality reports, you
The interior should also be as kid-friendly as possible.
Blair-NewCarDealers_mayHP.indd 2
Look for vehicles with lots of cup holders in the back seat to avoid spills and messes. And while some spills and messes are bound to happen, you can ask your dealer if there are options to have fabric or leather protection on the seats. Having the kids comfortable and entertained during those long family road trips can also save you the headache of backseat sibling squabbles and complaints of boredom. Having 12-volt power ports for charging tablets and other electronic devices are an option available in many vehicles nowadays. Good audio systems and air conditioning can also make for fun and comfortable car rides. Lastly, it’s important to shop around and test drive vehicles before deciding what will be a good fit for your family. Bring the kids along for test drives to get their feedback and bring any strollers and car seats to the dealership to see if the vehicle can easily accommodate those items. 2018 Audi S5 Audi S5 brings back the style with performance By David Chao After almost 10 years in existence, the 2018 Audi S5 receives a bumper-to-bumper redesign that enhances its past classic design with modern touches. Audi claims that this 2018 version is “all-new” with regards to both the exterior and what’s under the hood and the body. In almost every aspect, the Audi S5 shines, though it does deliver a slightly different “flavour” than its predecessor. The S5 is a high-performance version of the already well-designed Audi A5. The models available for the S5 are the coke-bottle coupe, the even sleeker sporty Cabriolet, and - for the first time in North America – a five-door “coupe” called the Sportback. Of course, there is also the ultimate version, RS5, for those who aspire to have the “best of best” in the Audi mid-sized lineup. The introduction of the Sportback is a significant one, because we’ve been wanting to see the five-door version here in North America for a very long time (Europe and Asia always had that model). In essence, the S5 and the A5 five-door models are like shrunken A7/S7; with similarly fashionable designs.
fit-and-finish cuddle the driver and the passenger in “Audi” way. The Virtual Cockpit is both innovative and crystal-clear, providing a digital dashboard that both wows and delights the driver and the passengers. The 3D graphics are shown in vivid colour at 60 frames per second which enhance one’s driving experience. Additionally, there is an MMI touch feature with handwriting recognition to make entering commands and addresses easier than just using the rotary dial. However, the rotary dial is large and exceptionally useable as well. Other improved functions are online traffic and weather info, new headlines/tweets read-aloud, internet radio and podcasts - all at your fingertips. The interior is generous with regards to space. The S5 offers plenty of trunk and passenger space for a coupe design, though the rear seat area is always tight in the coupe – no issue with the space in the Sportback. The interior also features an elegant but somewhat over-used diamondquilted leather, carbon fiber dash trim, Alcantara leather door panels and contrast stitching for a bit of spice (some are optional features).
DESIGN The exterior looks athletic, simultaneously strong and sleek. The creases sculpt the hood and the body in all the right places and the 7-point LED headlights flank a low chrome grille. The slightly bulging hood lines are unique to the new A5/S5 – not sure if I really like it – but the overall look and feel is still trendy, fashionable, and simply elegant. This is something that Asian competitors just can’t seem to replicate when it comes to design. Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura, for example, are brands that “try too hard” when it comes to exterior design, often resulting in interesting but complex car styling that looks unnatural. Audi pioneered interior design trends and the 2018 S5 doesn’t disappoint. Natural curves, intricate patterns, and seamless
PERFORMANCE This year’s S5 has a new engine and new transmission under the hood. Replacing a supercharged 3.0-liter V6, the 2018 S5 all-wheel drive quattro contains a redesigned turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. This gives the S5 over 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This new turbo engine is surprisingly 31 pounds lighter than its supercharged predecessor. It has switched over to an eight-speed automatic transmission from the seven-speed dual clutch system. Audi has claimed that most purchasers of this vehicle opt for the automatic transmission and so a manual option is not available. In some ways, it’s unfortunate that both the supercharged engine and the dual clutch system have been replaced, because they ultimately delivered sensational performance with a unique character with
the previous model. But in today’s world of fuel efficiency, emission requirements, and focus on comfort vs outright performance, it’s all understandable. Don’t get me wrong, Audi didn’t sacrifice any performance by “switching” over to the new turbocharged engine and 8-speed auto – in fact the performance has been enhanced in many aspects – but the sort of “raw” feel that was so amazing about previous S5 is somewhat gone. Still, the S5 delivers sharp handling with just the right amount of road feel. Mixed with great acceleration and flat cornering, the S5 is superior to many of its competitors such as BMW 3 series (has numb steering), Lexus IS/RC (boring character), and Mercedes C-class (not as fun). The S5 roars from 0-100 km/hr in just 4.4 seconds, which by our accounts is faster than both the BMW 440i and MercedesBenz C43. SUMMARY With stunning looks, great handling and an array of luxurious options to boot, the all-new Audi S5 will make the driver feel both practical and indulgent. Pricing starts at $61,500 for the “Progressiv” package and $65,600 for the higher end “Technik” package (for the coupe). Full pricing and specifications are available at www.audi.ca. The only real question you have to ask is whether you want to consider the two-door or the five-door version – which comes down to personal taste of course. But with higher resale value, more practicality, and frankly better proportion (in my view), the five-door S5 Sportback is the one to get.
