Weird doesn’t begin to describe it.

The Daytona showed just how far Dodge was willing to go to be the king of NASCAR racing... for racing. The decision was made to make the Dodge Charger more competitive by moving the grille flush with the front bodywork and altering the angle of the rear window so that it followed the contour of the roof line, all in an effort to reduce drag and gain precious speed.

BY MALCOLM GUNN Parked on the showroom floor beside a hulking Monaco wagon or plain-Jane Dart sedan, the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona must have looked like it was from another planet . . . or at least another world.

Truth be told, that wasn’t far off the mark since back in the late 1960s, car sales were heavily connected with racing and, of course, winning.

Since you had to race what you built for street, the Daytona’s slippery shape - and the strange bodywork that went along with it - was solely intended to play along with the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) rules of the day.

Sure, the roof and doors appeared to be regular-issue, but the protruding snout and giant-sized wing that extended high above the trunk were anything but. They were affectionately known as “winged things.”

Who in their right mind would want to be seen driving such an oddball contraption? Chrysler Corp. probably didn’t care at the time since its focus was on race-track speed, not the street cars that had to be built to attain it. A bewildered public could actually thank NASCAR rules makers for the Daytona, so named for Daytona (Fla.) speedway where the NASCAR season kicks off.

That was then. Today’s so-called “stock” cars are all hand-built to a common standard using custom-formed sheetmetal that’s carefully bent and shaped around a stout steel frame, intricate roll cage and other high-tech safety systems.

However, from NASCAR’s earliest beginnings in the late 1940s until the mid ‘70s, life on the track was governed by a different set of rules. Teams couldn’t build a specially prepared race car that wasn’t based on a real “stock” car that the public could purchase from the local dealer.

It was called homologation, and it existed for one simple

On the track, the cars were faster than the stock-bodied versions, but proved unstable at high speeds. reason: keep the “stock” cars “stock” and keep the Big Three playing fair.

Fair? While it would have been relatively easy to build a few specially designed ringers and make them available to a select group of buyers (as was the case for the factory-backed drag-racing racers that competed in the Super Stock class), NASCAR strictly prohibited the practice by setting minimum production numbers.

If automobile manufacturers built a specialized car intended for high banks of Daytona, for example, they had to first create production versions for public consumption. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler were willing to do just about anything to win both the horsepower race and, ultimately the sales race, even if it meant bending the rules, or at least interpreting them to suit their needs.

In the quest for lap speed - then averaging 200 mph on some tracks - it became necessary to look beyond mere horsepower.

However, NASCAR rules prohibited giant spoilers, shovelnosed ground effects or any other wind-cheating devices to be grafted to any race car, unless they were available from the factory. And what self-respecting manufacturer would dare to create such a production model? NASCAR obviously wasn’t counting on Chrysler to pull out all the stops to gain an advantage over Ford and General Motors.

Both Chrysler’s Dodge and Plymouth divisions already had a race-proven engine in the 426-cubic-inch “Hemi” V8. What was needed was a more streamlined street car to homologate

What the Charger actually needed was more down force to keep it glued to the track. The radical solution was to add a pointy 18-inch extension to the nose plus a giant stabilizer wing mounted above the rear deck.

It was outrageous, of course, but very effective and entirely within the letter, if not the spirit, of NASCAR regulations.

Nearly all 505 of the radically altered winged Charger Daytona models (the “500” designation was dropped) built for public consumption arrived with 375-horsepower 440-cubic-inch V8s, while a handful came with the 425-horse Hemi that was capable of launching the 4,000-plus-pound car to 60 mph in around six seconds.

The Daytona was no drag-racer, but in “superspeedway” trim, the monstrous looking Charger proved its worth on NASCAR’s faster oval tracks, winning 80 percent of the races in which it competed, including the season opener Daytona 500.

However, Dodge failed to achieve as many victories as Ford due to the predominance of short tracks on the NASCAR schedule where the aerobody offered no real advantage.

Following the 1969 season, Chrysler moved the program to its Plymouth division (with the SuperBird), which carried on for another year with considerable success until NASCAR, fearing a field of mutant models running around its race venues, legislated the cars out of existence.

Each of the 500 or so private-citizen Charger Daytona buyers probably endured much derisive laughter for making such a seemingly imprudent purchase. Today, though, the highly sought-after Daytona basks in the aura of its own lore and legend, a remnant of headier times when NASCAR’s competitors literally ran amuck.

Born out of necessity the Jeep has become an icon not only in name but also in functionality.

The new Wrangler has been spruced up inside and out adding a new level of comfort and sophistication with technical enhancements not normally associated with a rugged off-roader.

Gone are the really awkward zipper connections on the soft top and are now replaced with a new slide-in configuration that makes going topless so much easier.

A new addition on the hard top is the Sky One-Touch powertop that is now available on Sahara and Rubicon four-door models. By simply pushing a button a full-length canvas cover mounted into the hardtop slides back opening the full roof to the elements.

The windshield has been raked back by seven per cent for better aerodynamics and a new four-bolt release design (down from 28) has been added to the to the top of the windshield enabling it to be folded down much more easily and quickly.

Under the hood the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 that produces 285 hp and 260 lb/ft of torque is still available as the base engine.

The belt line has been lowered with windows being increased in size making for better all round visibility. New lightweight, high strength aluminium doors have been added that reduce weight by nine kg in the front and seven kg in the rear and now feature new door pins of dif-

The new optional 2.0-litre turbo inline four-cylinder pushes out 270 hp and 295 lb/ft of torque.

There is a six speed manual transmission as well as an eight speed automatic transmission available.

The 4WD system still uses a two-speed transfer case and still includes your choice of Command-Trac or Rock-Trac, but new to the 2018 model is the addition of the available Selec-Trac - Jeeps full time system.

The new interior is considerably more refined than previous models, the fit and finish is very much improved with the dash being more driver centric now than utilitarian.

Depending on the option package there are a choice of infotainment screens ranging from the basic five- to seven-inch and the top of the range 8.4-inch and all come standard with fourth generation Uconnect.

Seating comfort is much improved with support and comfort levels leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessors.

On the road the Wrangler has become far more civilized.

I spent most of my drive in a Sahara four-door, 2.0-litre with the eight-speed transmission. This new Jeeps road handling surprised me immensely, road noise has been reduced dramatically even on the highway (I was in the hard top with the power top open).

Changes to the front and rear suspension have vastly improved Road feel and ride comfort. Steering is now crisp with handling way more civilized, which makes for a more relaxed drive.

Not that all these new refinements have taken anything away from the Wranglers main function — off roading.

Jeep has done a great job with the new Wrangler.

They have done enough refining of the interior and the on-pavement driving characteristics to make this Jeep more appealing to mainstream.

New Car Dealers Practical Approach to Clean Growth Strategy

The provincial government recently invited submissions towards its clean growth strategy, seeking feedback in a number of areas from buildings to industry and of course transportation. As one might expect, electric vehicles

BY BLAIR QUALEY (EVs) and the clean energy vehicle program (CEVs) was a major focus of the New Car Dealers of BC Transportation Intentions Paper Submission.

Over the last few years, New Car Dealers Association of BC (NCDA), in partnership with the Province, has played a pivotal role in reducing the percentage of BC’s greenhouse gases (GHGs) that directly comes from new light duty vehicle sales and the on-road light duty vehicle fleet (14% of all GHGs in BC).

Through the CEVforBC™ Program, incentives are provided at the time of purchase of eligible hydrogen, battery electric vehicles (BEV) or plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) vehicles.

Administered by the NCDA on behalf of the Province, sales processed through the Program have increased by more than 20% between 2016 and 2017 – and are up a further 110% during the first half of 2018.

BC leads the country in per capita EV adoption and has achieved results as good as, and even better than California has achieved - even with California’s years of regulation and changing zero emission vehicle (ZEV) supply mandates.

As part of the Clean Growth Transportation Intentions

strategy, Victoria is planning to continue current investments in CEV purchase incentives until CEVs make up 5% of all new light-duty vehicle sales by 2020, and then potentially phase them out. Also, under consideration is the adoption of a “California or Quebec Mandate” which will force automakers to supply an increasing percentage of CEVs for the light duty vehicle market.

Ideally, an electric vehicle would be a solution for every individual and family. However, in a resource-based province such as ours, we need more options and flexibility and an electric vehicle is simply not a viable option for everyone at this time.

Adopting mandates for EV’s also fails to recognize that newer model gasoline powered vehicles can also play an important role in the reduction of GHG’s, as new internal combustion models become more fuel-efficient with each passing year.

As British Columbia families wrestle with affordability issues, having and an incentive program like CEV available is what provides a family or individual the means to transition to a newer and more environmentally friendly vehicle. However, incentives will be required beyond 2020 to maintain momentum until a demand-tipping point is reached.

We will continue to work with the BC government to further the approach that has been working - using carrots, not sticks.

In our feedback to government, we have recommended:

• Continuing to fund the highly successful Clean Energy Vehicle for BC (CEVforBC™) Point-of- Sale Incentive Program; • Facilitate sustainable funding for the BC Scrap-It Program, which during its 22-years of existence, has removed over 44,000 older, heavy polluting vehicles from BC roads; • Continuing to support and develop a broader electric vehicle charging network; • Investing in education and marketing campaigns, in partnership with the automotive industry, to further the knowledge and understanding of the advantages of new clean energy vehicles; and, • Expanding the range of clean energy vehicle incentives, such as discounted rates on BC Ferries, like other jurisdictions such as Norway.

ACURA RDX The Acura RDX is an important compact luxury SUV first released in 2007.

For Honda/Acura, the RDX was the first production vehicle for North America with a turbocharged engine. Since then, the RDX has undergone many changes to become what it is today,

The 2019 Acura RDX projects a much sportier feel inside and out, particularly in the first-for-RDX A-Spec trim – thanks for blacked out rims and bold front design. The fancier design of the A-Spec carries into the interior with sports steering wheel, paddle shifters, metal sports pedals, and a red glowing instrument panel.

As a luxury SUV, the RDX has a premium feel to the cabin with soft leathers, brushed aluminum accents and upscale touches everywhere.

Acura used the concept of “Kime” - a word in Japanese martial arts meaning “focus and power” - to develop the new True Touchpad Interface (TTI) for the infotainment console. With a 10.2-inch centre display, this puts the in-car touch experience directly under the driver’s control.

This is most apparent when driving uphill or accelerating on the highway; there is plenty of “pull” power to make the RDX competitive with cars costing much more. The steering feel is also improved, but the overall feel is a bit numb in comparison to the new BMW X3 or the Audi Q5

With sensible features, a sporty style and luxury flair, the 2019 Acura RDX is a solid vehicle with a great value and performance. The base price for the 2019 Acura RDX is $43,990 and climbs up to $54,990 for the Platinum Elite package. With sporty styling and performance strength at the forefront, the new Acura RDX is already one of the top selling luxury compact SUVs on the market, competing with the BMW X3, the Infiniti QX50, the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes GLC300. Taking into account the value-for-money factor, the 2019 RDX blows the doors off these competitors.

The Acura RDX comes with four driving modes, including the Comfort mode, Sport, Sport + and even “snow” driving modes. There is a new 10-speed transmission as well, delivering an efficient fuel economy. Fuel economy is 11/8.6/9.9 L/100km for city, highway and combined respectively.

The RDX comes with Super Handling AllWheel-Drive, which means that the system can provide up to 70% of the engine’s power to the rear wheels and up to 100% of that power can be transferred to either right or left. The Acura RDX shares some design similarities with the iconic NSX supercar as well, showing that performance runs in the family. Similarities

The 16-speaker ELSE Studio 3D sound system in the Acura RDX was designed by an award-winning engineer and producer named Elliot Scheiner. The audio quality is truly like a symphony within the cabin – Acura even included on a flash drive songs that have been produced exclusively for the RDX. Listening to them in the RDX is like having a full orchestra playing all around you.

The 2019 Acura MDX has a 2.0-litre 16-valve Direct Injection DOHC VTEC turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This engine produces 272 horsepower and can pull 280 lb-ft of torque, impressive numbers indeed. The Niro combines a hybrid powertrain with a subcompact crossover for the best of both worlds.

It will also offer a total estimated range of more than 900 kilometres when the electric and gasoline systems are working together. A full charge happens in about 2.5 hours via a 240V (Level 2) charger and under 9 hours via a 120V (Level 1) charger — which puts it in a pretty exclusive class of affordable and desirable cars. But it really sucker punches the others with its styling — also being the most desired of things: a crossover.

Choosing a base model Niro would save you an estimated $667 over 12 months ($921/year). It might not be the fastest car on the block, and it doesn’t have AWD, yet, but for design, features, energy efficiency and a real competitive pricing structure, we think Kia’s done a great job with this new entry.

Since then, the RAV4 has become the household name in the family SUV segment. The RAV4 is now in its fourth generation cycle; last year, Toyota revised and updated both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. Perhaps one of the most exciting things about the refresh was the debut of the hybrid model.

A big improvement was made to the interior by upgrading to higher quality materials, including more soft-touch surfaces. Toyota added such items as digital display in the instruments gauge cluster, a 7.0-inch (optional) touchscreen, and a 12-volt outlet for the rear plus another USB port.

In true Toyota tradition, the RAV4 is a crossover that’s easy to live with. The ride is quiet and comfortable for everyday use. The driver’s seating position is car-like and supportive.

The stitched grey leather-look on the dash and seats are upscale in design and soft to the touch. This premium feel continues with the addition of chrome door handles, a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. There is a new seven-inch touchscreen with Navigation as standard in the SE and Limited Hybrid versions. There is plenty of room upfront, but adults sitting in the back row might feel a bit cramped if there are 3 people sitting on long road-trips.

The smaller back seat was due to the battery pack for the Hybrid system. As far as cargo numbers are concerned, there isn’t much difference between the hybrid and non-hybrid version. Behind the second row is 1,008 litres of cargo space which increases to 1,999 litres when the backseat are folded down. This is only 79 litres less than the non-hybrid version, so there is almost no compromise. The SE Hybrid version comes with a power lift gate as standard and is available in the LE+ Hybrid.

The RAV4’s exterior went through changes too. Its design became a bit more modernized with a bolder grille and redesigned LED headlights. Hybrid badging can also be found throughout the car.

Overall, the car retains its good looks and it continues to look up-to-date, despite the fact that the basic body hasn’t changed for a number of years.

DESIGNED TO RUN ANY RACE The second-row seats recline and slide back and forth. Slide forward and the trunk space grows, from 880 litres to 1,048 litres. Fold it down and you’ve got 1,822 litres of loading space. How on earth do you assess the value of the amount litres in a car? – I don’t really know, but relative to its rivals, the QX50 is roomier than virtually all of them! It might be more helpful to know that with all seats in place, it accommodates three golf bags, or a stroller stored lengthways, with space for additional cargo.

If the all-new 2019 Infiniti QX50 were an Olympic athlete it would be running for gold in the 100 metres and the marathon.

Funny thing about owning a pick-up truck, especially one as versatile and practical as the Ford F-150, you make a lot of ‘close’ friends, really quick.

Motion for lumbar support and a soothing massage to help reduce lower back and leg fatigue. Yes, a massage system. Those old fridges are heavy.

When a pick-up truck shows up in your driveway, there is almost always a phone call from a neighbor or friend, saying “hey, I just need to move one small item, can I borrow your truck for a little bit?” A mattress, dresser, and an avocado green old fridge later, you will have your truck back. If you had to help your friend move the items, there better have been pizza and fizzy beverages included in the deal.

A heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated captain’s chairs provide additional comfort in the front. Each new F-150 Limited includes a laser-etched plaque on the center console armrest bearing its serial number.

For 2019, Canada’s number one selling vehicle (it’s the top for cars and trucks sales), the Ford F-150, has some cool upgrades, inside and out.

The Limited version adds a high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, giving the F-150 status as the most powerful light-duty pickup in North America. Add to this the optional Pro Trailer Backup Assist to the 360-degree camera system with split-view display and dynamic hitch assist to simplify the hitching process, and FordPass Connect 4G LTE, providing Wi-Fi access for up to 10 devices, and you have tech bed on wheels.

Inside the tech continues, Ford’s SYNC 3 with AppLink, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto compatibility, ensures that you are connected, regardless of which device you connect to. Music to your ears is courtesy of the standard B&O PLAY audio system by HARMAN. Besides your hearing, your senses of touch and sight will rejoice as well. and power operation, with a lock and release. Move forward into the bed, and you can utilize Ford’s Boxlink Interchangeable Cargo Management System. The system adapts quickly to different uses, whether you are hauling an ATV, lumber, a ladder, or even your weekend picnic gear.
