Finding poetry Joy Barratt creates new works from First World War letters

Mission poet Joy Barratt has created a book of found poetry by using old letters sent by First World War soldiers. Barratt has taken different sections and phrases from the letters and created poetry and visual art pieces to tell a story. Barratt said this style of poetry has given her the freedom not found in other, more restrictive poetry style. For more, see page 20

‘The words just jump off the page’ Kevin Mills Mission Record
Mission author and poet Joy Barratt has found a new artistic style that has given her “license to expand.”
It’s called found poetry and Barratt has created a new book, Chaos Great & Wide – which focuses on letters written by First World War soldiers – that uses this style.

BPS LOWER SUCTION DENTURES! Lower dentures don’t have to “float” anymore! Most denture wearers struggle with a lower denture because it doesn’t suction down as an upper denture does. This means that a typical lower denture lifts and floats, allowing food to collect underneath and making it very challenging to eat and chew properly. The only effective treatment option to stabilize a lower denture has been Markus Fischer with dental implants but many patients are either afraid of dental surgery, they can’t afford them or they aren’t good candidates for implant therapy. In order to overcome theses problems, Dr. Jiro Abe from Tokyo, Japan, has developed a revolutionary new technique to achieve suction in lower dentures! In March 2015, Markus Fischer traveled to Japan to become the first Canadian denturist to become certified in the Lower Suction Denture technique (SEMCD). He returned in 2016 and 2017 to become a clinical and technical instructor and leader in the technique. Markus and his denture clinic team have literally traveled around the world to learn this new technique, so they can provide the best possible dentures for all our patients.

Q. What is the difference between SEMCD and conventional lower dentures? • The way a traditional lower denture is made hasn’t changed much over the past fifty years and results in a lower denture that doesn’t fit very well and floats in the mouth. • The lower suction denture technique (SEMCD) uses a revolutionary new impression technique that records the soft tissues of the cheek mucosa, sublingual tissue and the tongue. Using these soft tissues, the mandibular denture is being cradled and thus the mouth has created a custom fitted denture. Q. How is a Lower Suction Denture made? • Dr. Abe’s revolutionary new impression technique uses slow setting, high definition impression materials to captures the soft tissues of the lips, cheeks and tongue • This impression technique creates a seal of the oral mucosa that surrounds the lower denture and thus achieves suction. • Each denture fabrication step is essential to create a lower suction denture, such as size and placement of denture teeth, high precision acrylic injection system is used to minimize material shrinkage and the dentures are carefully trimmed and polished to ensure best possible fit. Q. Will it work for me? • 80% of patients are candidates. • An exam will be performed in a consultation to see if you’re a candidate, but the level of suction will be known after the final impression is taken.

We all want the best possible health for ourselves and going to the doctor’s office can be stressful. Being aware of our own health can really ease the anxiety when we go for a check-up. Here are a few tips to think about every time you are seeing your doctor.

If they usually brush off your questions or tell you that your symptoms are simply a part of aging, think about getting a second opinion. Your doctor shouldn’t be the only one asking questions. Some questions to ask your doctor are:
1. WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK ABOUT MY MEDICAL TESTS? Clinics are usually very organized but the system can get behind sometimes. Before leaving, it is always important to ask your doctor how and when your test results will be informed to you. It is well known that 29 is the highest possible count in a cribbage hand. It is realized when you get three fives and a jack (with different suit from those three fives) in your hand and the fourth five is the up-card (same suit as the jack). Flu is a contagious illness caused by a virus which attacks the respiratory system. It has repercussions on the entire human body, including muscle pain, headache, and loss of appetite. Unlike the common cold, the flu can be incapacitating to the point where it prevents people from continuing with their normal daily activities. Most people are exposed to this virus during the flu season. However, depending on a person’s immune systems, he or she might catch the flu while another person will not. During an outbreak you should wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose, which are the entry points for the most common flu viruses. Immune systems can be strengthened in several different ways. Having a healthy diet, avoiding stress, and getting regular exercise and plenty of sleep are good preventative practices. In addition, many health experts recommend the flu vaccine as a source of protection. Ideally, the vaccine should be given before the winter months, but it is never too late to be vaccinated, even during the flu season itself. The vaccine is particularly recommended for people at risk of catching the flu or who present a higher risk of complications, such as: • children aged between 6 and 23 months; • seniors; • people with chronic illnesses (i.e. asthma, diabetes, heart disease); • healthcare workers. Studies clearly show that the flu vaccine reduces the frequency of hospitalization and medical consultations, that it can prevent death from bacterial complications caused by the flu, such as sinusitis, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, and pneumonia.
