Hawes ‘ready to retire’ after election loss

71-year-old outgoing mayor plans to play more golf and enjoy more holidays Kevin Mills Mission Record

Randy Hawes’ long political career appears to have come to an end. The four-time Mission mayor and three time MLA lost his bid for the mayor’s chair to Pam Alexis on Saturday night. Sitting in his home, Hawes seemed at peace with the results. “The people spoke, obviously, and I guess everybody has a best-before date, so I’m OK with it.” He had said earlier in the election that, “If I win, I win and if I lose, I win,” noting he can now go on more holidays. “Retirement doesn’t look that bad. I’ve been 25 years doing this and, to be honest with you, I’m getting tired.” During his campaign, Hawes said he attempted to engage people on social media. “I had no idea that it was that nasty – that there was so many nasty people – and that’s disheartening.” Hawes said he doesn’t mind if people don’t agree with what he does, but he said a lot of it became

personal. “I find that pretty offensive and what’s much worse is your family is bothered by it.” Even worse, said Hawes, he knows some people who would have run in the election but decided not to, to protect their families from those kind of comments. “That’s what’s wrong with social media today. The keyboard warriors are able to do whatever they want, to say whatever they want, with impunity.” Hawes said he wouldn’t change anything he did in the campaign. “At 71 years old, I’m ready to retire. I’m going to play quite a bit of golf, do some holidaying… If I get bored, I’ll find something to do.” Hawes called Alexis after the results were in and congratulated her on the victory. “She said everything was good and everything was going to be OK. She thanked me, I thanked her and we move on. “Pam’s a very nice person. So I wish her well. I really hope this council comes together quickly and clicks. I mean, it’s got to. We are at a critical time. I wish her all the best.”

Alexis ready for the challenge

‘I like to bring out the best in people, I like to lead in a positive way’ With the election now behind her, newly elected Mission Mayor Pam Alexis can look ahead to the work and planning that awaits. But who is Pam Alexis, and what kind of mayor will she be? “I’m a community builder and have been since I moved here,” she told the Mission Record. Alexis has lived in the community for more than 22 years and became involved almost immediately. When the Clarke Theatre first opened, Alexis was hired to work there, running the front of the house. “Because there were so many people that came down to the theatre to check it out, I met everybody in the community that was somebody, because I was just in the right place at the right time.” She also worked at Mission Community Services and has a long history as an ESL teacher. That marked the beginning of her community involvement, and Alexis soon began to help at a number of non-profit organizations. She also began creating events, most of them in the cultural sector, for the community to enjoy. Her first step into politics was when she ran and won a seat on the Mission school board in 2005. “I learned the role of governance and the importance of process and decision-making.” Alexis said it was difficult. In her first term as a school trustee, from 2005-2008, the district closed four schools. Alexis then made the switch from school trustee to councillor, earning the highest number of votes in the 2014 municipal election Then she decided to run for the highest seat on council, the mayor’s chair. “I realized that there was an appetite for change in the community and I had spoken to many individuals and recognized there was an opportunity to inspire and to lead in perhaps a different way.” Preparation for the campaign started on June 1, 2018. Alexis called on the same team that helped her win a council seat four years earlier. Planning, choosing colours for the campaign and organizing a social media plan: Everything was thought out before the official campaign began. One of her biggest hurdles was to prepare mentally for the new challenge. “I’m a team player and to separate myself from the team, to become mayor, that was tricky.” The planning paid off as public reaction to her campaign was positive. Alexis said the freshness and colours were impactful and captured people’s imagination. “We had some real turning points in the campaign and I think the T-shirt was most effective.” She had more than 60 volunteers sign up immediately and they all received shirts to wear, promoting Alexis. “Towards the end, we were all out on the streets, campaigning wildly, a la James Atebe (a former mayor of Mission).” Alexis said another turning point was when she first saw the correlation between hand delivering post cards and how many hits the website received. “There was one day when we had 500 new visits in a single day. Those kinds of statistics were really important moving forward.” Her Facebook Live video was also a success, attracting almost 4,000 viewers. “Moving forward I’d like to include something

we’re going to have to figure out what the priorities are, and everything can’t be a priority.” She said the learning curve will be steep and quick. Other issues that will need to be dealt with include building community, traffic-calming issues, the waterfront, many applications for multi-family homes and examining the length of time it takes to get things through city hall, to name a few. Alexis and her team will be ready. ‘I’m humbled by all the support. You have selected a passionate council and I think it reflects on the caring community that we are. People really want people that care.”

Pam Alexis earned almost 60 per cent of the vote on her way to becoming Mission’s next mayor. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO like that in interacting with that sector who is on Facebook and social media.” When the results of the election were revealed, many people were surprised not that Alexis won, but by such a large margin. One person who wasn’t surprised was Alexis herself. She said she was expecting to win, because her team spent a lot of time looking at numbers and they knew there was that kind of appetite for change. Alexis now has to prepare to lead a new council, made up of two incumbents and four newcomers, but what kind of leader will she be? “I like to bring out the best in people. I like to lead in a positive way. I’m perhaps not going to be in your face, but I’m going to be more collaborative and trying to resolve issues with just dialogue and respectful dialogue. And I’m going to insist on that. My style is probably non-confrontational, but to try and find some solution in a non-aggressive way.” Alexis said there were many surprises in the election for council seats. “I wasn’t sure about the impact of Facebook as opposed to community involvement… I believe the community was looking at having a diverse group.” She was also surprised at the number of people who ran for council without having some community involvement. “It was the first time since I lived here that I didn’t know who all the candidates were. There was about a third that I had never met, which I found very interesting.” Alexis said it appears voters are no longer looking at experience; rather, they are looking for vision. An official ceremony is set for Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. in the Clarke Theatre, and then the new council gets to work. “The first order of business is to create a team and get to know each other,” she said, adding they need to discover everyone’s strengths and what issues they are passionate about to put together a list of strategic objectives they want to accomplish in next four years. “The budget is going to be a massive learning exercise for the new council members because there are some big decisions to make. A new Canadian leaf

The recreational use of cannabis is now legal in Canada, and as the second country in the world to do so after Uruguay, we are setting an example for others. Some warn recreational cannabis use will increase now, as businesses do what they do – look for new revenue streams to grow. And that may come in time, with the introduction of marijuana-infused edibles and beverages with THC or CBD. Both are active chemical ingredients, but only the former gets you high. The other is meant to have a calming effect, with anti-anxiety properties. But legalization doesn’t guarantee that consumption will increase. According to Statistics Canada, 4.9 million residents consumed $5.7 billion worth of cannabis – medical and non-medical – last year. Canadians have been using marijuana, in various forms, long before Oct. 17. So they didn’t need a change in law to prompt them to do so. What’s changed? Canadians may or

webt@lk

may not choose, for now, to purchase cannabis – produced by licensed manufacturers – from government-run stores, of which there is one in Kamloops, or online, to be delivered by Canada Post. Legalization amounts mainly to a tax grab for the federal government – taking billions of dollars annually away from the black market. It also ends nonsensical arrests for possession of minor amounts of cannabis for personal consumption. Economic spinoffs also exist, such as job creation and investment opportunities. So there is much good to come from legalization. Domestic issues, such as dealing with youth or drivers who consume, will be addressed in time. But for those who already used, not much will change. They were trailblazers in proving the scope of relatively safe consumption, which led to this historic day. Canada has turned over a new leaf. – Black Press

B.C.’s PR vote is dishonest, misleading Gordon Gibson

Guest Shot I was born in British Columbia a bit more than 81 years ago and have spent most of my life here. It has been a great privilege to live in this province and, like many, I have done what I could to give back. My method was via politics. I ran five times, elected twice as an MLA. I was executive assistant to Pierre Trudeau and then leader of the B.C. Liberal Party in the 1970s. I contested that position again in the 1990s, losing to Gordon Campbell. I have since been non-partisan. In the last election the record will show I gave $2,000 to the campaign of NDP MLA Carole James. Over that time I have learned there are two

parts to politics. Most of the year-to-year decisions belong to our elected representatives, including taxation and spending. That is fine. However some basic things – our rights and freedoms – do not belong to politicians. Central to our rights and freedoms is our electoral system by which we select our representatives. Politicians are hopelessly conflicted and naturally will seek personal advantage in any change. But democratic elections belong to us, and, if the rules are to be changed, they should be changed by us. In 2002, I was tasked by the B.C. government to design the Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. That process was unanimously adopted by the B.C. legislature. It has been studied and copied around the world as the gold standard for making such important changes. All 160 members of that assembly studied, consulted and deliberated for a year and proposed a precise system (it was called BC-STV) that was put to a referendum vote. That is the

way to do it: citizen design, citizen approval. Almost 58 per cent of British Columbians voted in favour. That was not enough for the government of the day, though none of its members could even dream of such support personally. So the initiative support dwindled and died. Now we have a new proposal for electoral change, but with a huge difference. This one is designed by partisan politicians for their benefit, however high-sounding their words. Anyone who follows sports knows the importance of detailed rules. Even apparently tiny ones can tilt the playing field and rig the game. To all but the closest students of the game the tricks are invisible, but they determine who wins. That is the basic problem of the current referendum on electoral change. Specific details like community representation, what bosses will choose party list MLAs, how many votes you will have and how counted – these essen-

tials are hidden, to be decided only after the referendum. But that is too much of a mandate to give to a saint, let alone your average MLA. In short, this process is dishonest, misleading and wide open to down-the-road manipulation. What MLAs who support this referendum are advocating is an erosion of our rights and freedoms, as the politicians write their own employment contracts. We know the right citizen process in B.C. and have used it in the past. That is the honest way to consider the respectable but very complex question of electoral change. Our current government is following a process that is wrong. I say, for shame. On this self-serving and deceitful question, “No” is the vote for democracy. Gordon Gibson was leader of the B.C. Liberal Party from 1975 to 1979. He was inducted into the Order of B.C. in 2008.

New-look council elected

33154 1st Ave., Mission • 604-289-4867

Voters choose four newcomers, two incumbents Mission council has a new look following Saturday’s municipal election. Voters elected four new faces, along with two incumbents, to lead the district in the next four years. Topping the polls with 4269 votes was newcomer Jag Gill, who said he was “feeling good” now that the election is over. “I’m happy. I didn’t know if I was going to win,” he said when he arrived at Mission city hall Saturday night. “I wanted to say congratulations to everyone that won, and, even for the candidates who ran in the whole election and didn’t win, I wanted to say congratulations to them.” He said he owes everything to the residents of Mission. “I don’t even consider this my win. It’s their win. I’m going to go home. I’m going to actually sleep – because I haven’t slept properly in almost a month… and then I’m going to start prepping, reading files, reading notes, so I can sit at the table and perform my best and use my work ethic to provide for the residents of Mission – to make Mission the best it can be.” Another newcomer to politics, but no stranger to the community, is Cal Crawford, who was second in council voting with 3777 votes. “I’m humbled and honoured by the sup-

port that I received from the voters of Mission and I’m really excited about moving ahead over the next four years, making Mission better,” he said. Crawford said the new councillors have to go through orien-

“It’s going to look different but I’m sure we’re all going to come together and do a great job for this city.” Hamilton is not worried about all of the changes on council. “My mantra is

change is inevitable, growth is optional.” Another incumbent, Danny Plecas, finished fourth with 3486 votes. “I am delighted I got elected. I am surprised by the outcome,” said Plecas, adding he didn’t think Pam Alexis would win with such

a big majority. “I believe she ran a very good social media campaign. It was very positive and I think the public was very satisfied with that approach to the election and realized change was important to the community.” Plecas said, by electing four new councillors, voters showed they were seeking new blood and ideas in the community. Political newcomer Ken Herar won the fifth seat on council with 2847 votes. “I’m a bit surprised. It was a tight vote and I knew we were in the striking zone, but you never really believe it until the results come in.” Herar said he is excited to get to work. “I want to learn my roles as quickly as possible, get abreast of everything I need to know, work with mayor and council to get up to date on major issues in the community and make sure we are not lagging behind.” Earning the sixth, and final, seat at the council table was Mark Davies with 2521 votes. “I’m feeling excited and gladdened at the opportunity to help the people of Mission,” he said. Davies said he is looking forward to working with a new group of councillors. “The group looks fantastic. The voters are wise. I think they’ve picked an excellent council.” The inaugural meeting of the new council is set for

A vehicle crash scenario was set up at the local high school’s bus loop – just off Grand Street – and police, fire and ambulance all responded to the scene, as if it were real, as students looked on. The event was held “basically to expose kids to a scenario that involves all three services working together,” explained Mike Miller, career co-ordinator at Mission Public Schools. During the morning, an ICBC presentation took place on distracted and impaired driving. It was followed by the crash scenario, and questions from the students. Miller said the presentation allows students to find out the things necessary to go down these career paths. Sonia Gill, career advisor at Mission Secondary School, said the school has been trying to host one career event a month. “We had a lot of kids who are interested in becoming, or asking questions about, how to go into the police or fire. “So we thought we would create an event that brings all three first responders together and to have it more hands on so students could see each of them respond to a crash scene,” Gill said.

MORE THAN AN ICONIC BELL TOWER

The iconic bell tower shines like a beacon to the local community, a sign that you are home, and a calm in the storm of everyday life. Westminster Abbey opens its doors daily to residents and visitors who come from far and wide for a place to reflect and meditate, to see the beautiful church, attend mass and times of prayer, or to walk the grounds and take in the scenic vista. It is however foremost a Benedictine monastery and home to a brotherhood of priests and consecrated religious, who dedicate their lives to God. Established in 1939, this is a daughter foundation from the Abbey of Mount Angel in Oregon, which has a lineage going back to the early 1880’s in Engelberg, Switzerland. Today the monastic community looks to live

Father Braganza a balanced life through prayer & solitude, work & rest, study & reading, following the rule of St. Benedict, which offers a simple and ordered Christian life. If visiting, you are asked to respect this way of life and follow the dress code of no shorts or overly exposed skin when entering the Abbey Church. The buildings are also the campus of a minor and major seminary which the monastic community directs. The formation taught in the seminary focuses on four strategic learning pillars which are designed to develop strong leaders and thoughtful men, through human interaction in community

life, growth in prayer and worship, academic studies, and practical pastoral experience. These lessons are combined with daily and weekly chores, developing skills both inside and outside the classroom environment. With one teacher per two or three students the school invests its energy into guiding these young men, some of whom will continue beyond high school to college studies with degrees in arts and theology. The walking trail network gives a sample of the Abbey’s grounds, from which Fraser Valley vistas or the Abbey’s own farmland can be seen from a distance, with 50 head of cattle, pigs, chickens, fruit orchards and a vegetable garden. While not selfsufficient the monks are able to cultivate key ingredients including vegetables, meat and eggs, providing daily fresh ingredients for the kitchen. Ensure you stay on the designated trails or you may come face to face with a bull or the local wildlife including bear and deer whose wanderings often cross the estate; bikes, drones and dogs are prohibited from the grounds for this reason. If entering the church, note that the ambiance changes as the sun moves across the 64 stain glass windows, with the colors chosen to represent the four elements of water, fire, earth and air. There is also a collection of contemporary art and basreliefs commemorating the lives of saints, created by artist Father Dunstan who resides at the Abbey. If you hear the bells ring before Mass or Vespers, these are ten bells imported from Whitechapel in England, where the famous Liberty Bell and Big Ben were also made. Rich in history and offering a peaceful place for contemplation and prayer, we are fortunate to have the Abbey within our community, and a landmark that resonates across the Fraser Valley. Forestry Friday

All Creatures Great and Small By Kelly Kitsch, RFT

As forest managers of the Mission community forest, our responsibilities go beyond just seeing the forest for the trees. When harvesting is proposed, we complete extensive inventories of creeks, plants, soils, and ecosystems to see how to best manage the site to protect wildlife trees and riparian features. The District hires wildlife biologists to conduct fish testing on many creeks. Cutthroat trout are one of the species that inhabit our riparian areas. While they are very small in size, the genetic diversity of the trout throughout the forest make them regional important to ensure their habitat is protected, including no harvesting, using bridges to cross their creeks rather than culverts, and preventing siltation from entering streams. A resident hiking on the Roy Kittles trail on McCoombs street sent us a photograph of a northern alligator lizard she found during her hike. Alligator lizards grow up to 20cm long and look a lot like a miniature alligator! They are commonly found in fir and hemlock forests, both on the coast and in the interior. These lizards use rocks and roadside features for basking in the sun and they will find a safe place to build their hibernation dens. They are seldom seen and if caught they will force out a bad

Cutthroat trout

smelling liquid from their vent, bite you or as a last resort, they will drop their tail and run away. Alligator lizards feed on various beetles, caterpillars and grasshoppers, as well as spiders, snails and millipedes. Several studies have been carried out in our ponds and wetlands and a number of ideal habitats for red legged frogs have been identified and protected. Red legged frogs prefer the cool temperatures of the coastal forests and live in moist forests and wetlands with trees, breeding in shallow ponds or slow streams that are well shaded. Adult frogs spend much of their time on land, sometimes straying quite a distance from the water if the weather is damp. They will often take shelter under logs or other debris to stay cool and damp. This frog has a limited range in B.C., being found only in the southwestern part of the province. Their range extends southward as far south as California. Red-legged frogs are nationally listed as Special Concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) and they are on the provincial Blue List.

Large mammals are the most easily seen creatures in our forests, and equally important are the small and obscure amphibians and fish that exist here.

Other species you may come across out in our forests are the pacific- water shrew, coastal giant and northwest salamanders, rough-skinned newt, bull trout and many more. Good things come in small packages! If you spot a creature of interest, snap a picture and send the location along to us at forestry@mission.ca. We would love to learn more areas where interesting species can be found.

fun

Keep costumes hazard-free: While many kids love wearing masks and costumes with intricate accessories, these items can actually become barriers when spotting cars and other hazards. Try swapping out the mask for face paint. Also, ensure dresses and capes are short enough so kids avoid falling.

Stick together: Kids should be accompanied by adults at all times. Hard to keep track of which are yours? Try dressing up in group-themed costumes.

Stay bright: The brighter and more colourful the costume, the better. That could include attaching reflective tape, buttons and lights to kids’ coats and goody bags – anything that makes it easier for drivers to see them as they cross the street. Carrying a flashlight is also a good idea.

Follow the yellow-brick road: Draw a trick-or-treat map with your kids and ensure everyone sticks to the route. Discuss a plan with older children so you know where they are at all times, which could involve using a cell phone.

Check candy: Adults should check all treats be wary of unsealed or broken wrappers and unwrapped candies. If you’re not sure, simply throw it out.

Drivers, slow down: Crashes spike by 25 per cent on Halloween, according to ICBC. More children will be on the streets and sidewalks in the evening — many of them distracted by the night’s festivities. Drivers are urged to slow down, drive safely and not drink and drive.

Mission’s next school board is going to have a very familiar look. Four of the five members are incumbents, with only one newcomer on the board. Incumbent Tracy

Loffler led the way with 4931 votes, followed by Randy Cairns with 4849 and Rick McKamey with 4298. Newcomer Julia Renkema finished in fourth spot with 4279 to beat out challenger Doug McNeill, who failed to win a seat on the board, with 4006 votes. Tight races in the FVRD

Recount called for in Area C Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) chief election officer Jaime Schween is calling for a judicial recount of Electoral Area C votes. Saturday’s results were delivered past midnight and showed candidate Annie Silver winning the role of director by a single vote – 136 votes to opponent Wendy Bales’s 135. Mel Waardenburg finished third with 99 votes. A press release from FVRD states that Schween determined one ballot that was rejected should have been accepted as a valid vote – meaning the election resulted in a tie. The actual results won’t be determined until the provincial courts declare election results at the completion of the ballot recount. Municipal election ties can be broken by drawing by lot or by runoff election. If the local government’s election bylaw doesn’t specify which it uses, then a runoff election must be held. In Electoral Area F – McConnell Creek and Hatzic Prairie – Hugh Davidson has been declared the new director, defeating Ray Boucher 165 to 115 for the director’s chair. In Electoral Area G – Nicomen Island, Deroche, Dewdney and Hatzic Island – Al Stobbart has been named the winner (218 votes to 96 votes) over challenger Laurie Larson.

BPS LOWER SUCTION DENTURES! Lower dentures don’t have to “float” anymore! Most denture wearers struggle with a lower denture because it doesn’t suction down as an upper denture does. This means that a typical lower denture lifts and floats, allowing food to collect underneath and making it very challenging to eat and chew properly. The only effective treatment option to stabilize a lower denture has been Markus Fischer with dental implants but many patients are either afraid of dental surgery, they can’t afford them or they aren’t good candidates for implant therapy. In order to overcome theses problems, Dr. Jiro Abe from Tokyo, Japan, has developed a revolutionary new technique to achieve suction in lower dentures! In March 2015, Markus Fischer traveled to Japan to become the first Canadian denturist to become certified in the Lower Suction Denture technique (SEMCD). He returned in 2016 and 2017 to become a clinical and technical instructor and leader in the technique. Markus and his denture clinic team have literally traveled around the world to learn this new technique, so they can provide the best possible dentures for all our patients.

FUN BY THE NUMBERS

Q. What is the difference between SEMCD and conventional lower dentures? • The way a traditional lower denture is made hasn’t changed much over the past fifty years and results in a lower denture that doesn’t fit very well and floats in the mouth. • The lower suction denture technique (SEMCD) uses a revolutionary new impression technique that records the soft tissues of the cheek mucosa, sublingual tissue and the tongue. Using these soft tissues, the mandibular denture is being cradled and thus the mouth has created a custom fitted denture. Q. How is a Lower Suction Denture made? • Dr. Abe’s revolutionary new impression technique uses slow setting, high definition impression materials to captures the soft tissues of the lips, cheeks and tongue • This impression technique creates a seal of the oral mucosa that surrounds the lower denture and thus achieves suction. • Each denture fabrication step is essential to create a lower suction denture, such as size and placement of denture teeth, high precision acrylic injection system is used to minimize material shrinkage and the dentures are carefully trimmed and polished to ensure best possible fit. Q. Will it work for me? • 80% of patients are candidates. • An exam will be performed in a consultation to see if you’re a candidate, but the level of suction will be known after the final impression is taken.

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Do you have lower dentures? Are your dentures loose? Find out how Lower Suction Dentures can benefit you.

THE

We all want the best possible health for ourselves and going to the doctor’s office can be stressful. Being aware of our own health can really ease the anxiety when we go for a check-up. Here are a few tips to think about every time you are seeing your doctor.

ears. Knowing about your condition might help you manage it better.

3. IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP? Many diseases have by lifestyle factors these days such as your diet, how much you exercise, if you smoke or drink etc. Asking this question really lets your doctor know that you care about your health. It makes your healthcare provider happy because it lets them know that you actually care about your health.

4. WHEN WILL MY MEDICATION START WORKING AND WHAT ARE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?

You might be tempted to say that have started a good diet, are exercising well or have stopped smoking. After all, you don’t want your doctor to think that you don’t listen to them. Your doctor needs all the facts to give the right treatment to you and even one bit of information can change your treatment goals.

Lots of medications do not start working right away and many patients may feel frustrated about that. Some of the side effects go away after a few weeks so it is important to inquire about side effects and its timings. Make a habit to ask your pharmacists questions such as “Do I need to take it with food?”, “Does it interfere with my other medications?” “What time of the day should I take it?”.

2. PRIORITIZE YOUR TOP CONCERNS

5. WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP ME?

1. BE HONEST

You may have multiple questions or concerns that you might want to talk to your doctor about but your doctor has limited time. Pick your top two to three concerns, write them down and let them know at the beginning of the appointment. This way they can work accordingly.

3. YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT KNOW ALL THE ANSWERS Sometimes your doctor may not be able to answer your questions, which is totally normal. He may be able to help you find the information, provide you with the information in the next visit or refer you to a specialist. This is a sign of a good doctor. If they usually brush off your questions or tell you that your symptoms are simply a part of aging, think about getting a second opinion. Your doctor shouldn’t be the only one asking questions. Some questions to ask your doctor are:

1. WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK ABOUT MY MEDICAL TESTS? Clinics are usually very organized but the system can get behind sometimes. Before leaving, it is always important to ask your doctor how and when your test results will be informed to you. Sometimes your results are back and the clinic forgets to call you, that is why it’s very important to keep in touch and follow up if you don’t hear back after a certain period.

2. WHAT DOES THE DIAGNOSIS ACTUALLY MEAN? Doctors may assume that you might know what your condition might signify to you. It is important to ask questions such as, “What may have caused my condition?”, “Is it permanent? If so, can it be treated or managed?”, “How can I learn more about it?”. You may make another appointment, have your questions pre-written and may even bring your family member with you for a second set of

Doctors are a link to a multidisciplinary team and are involved with a team of professionals such as a social worker, psychologist, physiotherapists, dieticians etc. They are also aware of community resources such as HealthLink BC, FETCH, BC 211 etc. Many organizations are there for specific diseases, for example, BC Cancer agency, Alzheimer society of BC etc., which your doctor can help with providing the information. Empowering yourself and working towards managing your condition is the best way to help your doctor help you out. Best decisions are made when we work together.

Mission’s Bill Allenby beat the odds to get a perfect hand in crib last week. Allenby was playing at the Mission Senior’s Association when it happened. It is well known that 29 is the highest possible count in a cribbage hand. It is realized when you get three fives and a jack (with different suit from those three fives) in your hand and the fourth five is the up-card (same suit as the jack). The odds of being dealt a perfect hand is estimated to be 1 in 216,580. Allenby may want to go out and buy a lottery ticket with that kind of luck.

Buying a snowblower: types and features Are you on the hunt for the perfect snowblower? Wondering which one you should buy? Here’s what you should know about the different available types. • Electric shovels: ideal for small areas like balconies, sidewalks or very small driveways. They can remove snow up to 10 centimetres deep. • Electric snowblowers: best for small, flat driveways. They’re typically unable to remove icy or heavy snow. • Single-stage snowblowers: also best for small driveways with trouble lifting icy and heavy snow. They can remove up to 20 centimetres of snow. • Two-stage snowblowers: suited for long, wide or sloped driveways. They

have no problem moving over 20 centimetres of snow, even if it’s heavy or mixed with ice. However, they take up a lot of room, so make sure you have sufficient storage space. • Three-stage snowblowers: perfect for large driveways and areas that regularly get huge amounts of snow. They can be up to 50 per cent more powerful than two-stage snowblowers. Now that you’ve determined the type of snowblower you need, you can start looking at the different models that are available. Some have heated handgrips. Others come with power steering, a feature that makes using a big machine much easier.

It’s best to invest in a popular brand because if replacement pieces are ever needed, they’ll be more readily available. Always buy the best model of snowblower you can afford. Inexpensive ones tend to require more in the way of maintenance and repairs.

Unlike the common cold, the flu can be incapacitating to the point where it prevents people from continuing with their normal daily activities. Most people are exposed to this virus during the flu season. However, depending on a person’s immune systems, he or she might catch the flu while another person will not. During an outbreak you should wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose, which are the entry points for the most common flu viruses. Immune systems can be strengthened in several different ways. Having a healthy diet, avoiding stress, and getting regular exercise and plenty of sleep are good preventative practices. In addition, many health experts recommend the flu vaccine as a source of protection. Ideally, the vaccine should be given before the winter months, but it is never too late to be vaccinated, even during the flu season itself. The vaccine is particularly recommended for people at risk of catching the flu or who present a higher risk of complications, such as: • children aged between 6 and 23 months; • seniors; • people with chronic illnesses (i.e. asthma, diabetes, heart disease); • healthcare workers. Studies clearly show that the flu vaccine reduces the frequency of hospitalization and medical consultations, that it can prevent death from bacterial complications caused by the flu, such as sinusitis, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, and pneumonia.

Mission runs straight through Kelowna Roadrunners improve to 4-1, look ahead to first-place battle this afternoon Ben Lypka Abbotsford News

The Mission Roadrunners’ offence continues to cause headaches for teams in the AAA’s Eastern conference, and that trend continued on Saturday at

Roadrunner Field. Mission controlled the line of scrimmage and bulldozed their way to a 36-13 win over the Kelowna Owls to improve to 4-1 in regular-season action. The first half saw both teams slug it out

defensively, with Roadrunners quarterback Jackson Trask putting Mission up 8-7 after one. The second quarter saw the war of attrition continue, but great time management by the Roadrunners saw Trask connect with

wide receiver Tyson Bongo on a 30-yard major to put Mission up 16-7 at the half. The offence plowed its way to touchdowns from running back Keegan Royal and Trask again to build to the 36-13 win. Royal

collected 102 yards rushing on the day, with Cody McMahon adding 98 and Matt Roadhouse contributing with 32. “We go into each game with a game plan and when it works it feels good,” said Roadrunners head coach Danny Jakobs. “We wanted to push them around and I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage for the most part. In the second half we made a few adjustments and it worked out well so we’re quite pleased.” The Roadrunners’ offensive line was a black and green wave on Saturday, overwhelming and confusing the Owls defence. Jakobs said that’s exactly the way his team needs to play.

Mission’s Tyson Bongo fights for extra yards during B.C. high school football action on Saturday BEN LYPKA PHOTO “It’s all about getting as many guys to the point of attack as you can,” he said. “Some of our plays have nine guys blocking and it’s frustrating for a defence because you can be there but you either can’t find the ball or just can’t get to it.”

Mix those aggressive rushing plays with the deep threat of a star receiver like Bongo and it becomes a recipe for success for the Roadrunners. That recipe will be put to the test later today (Friday), when the undefeated Lord

Tweedsmuir Panthers (5-0) from Surrey come to Mission. The firstplace showdown kicks off at 3 p.m., and Jakobs said he wants his team to be ready. “Our goal is to win the conference and we can still do that with a Continued on A31

Slide hits four games Outlaws return home on Saturday Ben Lypka Abbotsford News

The losing streak has now reached four games for the Mission City Outlaws. The club went 0-2 last week and continue having difficulty producing offence. Mission has scored just 36 goals in 13 games, or about 2.77 goals per game, which often isn’t enough to win in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. The Outlaws fell 3-2 to the Delta Ice Hawks in Ladner on Tuesday. They battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game midway through the second, but the Ice Hawks grabbed the lead back just

minutes later and held on for the win in the third period. Chase Newman and Tristyn Olson scored the goals for Mission, with both players recording two-point games. Mission’s Isaac Elias made 17 saves in a losing cause. The Outlaws then travelled to Burnaby on Sunday, losing 5-2 to the Grandview Steelers. Mission led 2-1 midway through the second period on a pair of shorthanded goals from Cobin Genge and Michael Nemeth, but Grandview scored four unanswered goals over the last 25 minutes of the game to earn the win. The Outlaws also allowed two power plays in the loss,

with Matthew Trulsen making 33 saves. Mission’s record dropped to 3-7-3 on the season with the pair of losses, and the club is tied for 10th place in the PJHL. The Outlaws began a busy week on Tuesday, when the Abbotsford Pilots came to town, but results were not available at press time. Mission then travelled to Richmond on Thursday. The team returns home on Saturday, when the Port Moody Panthers come to the Mission Leisure Centre. Faceoff is set for 6:45 p.m. For more on the team, visit the team’s website at missioncityoutlaws.com.

Squad enjoys hot start Ben Lypka Abbotsford News

It’s early, but the Mission Roadrunners senior girls volleyball team is off to a red-hot start. The club sits atop the Tier 1 girls east standings with a perfect 3-0 record. Mission picked up wins over G.W Graham (3-1 on Sept. 24), Sardis (3-1 on Oct. 10) and Yale (3-0 on Oct. 17). Head coach Andrew Hale said the recent win over Yale was a big night for the entire Mission volleyball program. “The girls started strong in front of a large and

loud crowd and went up 14-1 to set the tone for the match,” he stated. “Janelle Matthysen hit .715 for the night and was player of the match, and Mo Likness led the way offensively with 10 kills.” Several players from last year’s team that finished seventh overall in the AAAA provincials are back this year, including key seniors Makenzie Rourke, Matthysen and Anna Kvist. Hale pointed out that Oct. 17 also saw the junior girls go a perfect 3-0 in their games and the senior boys sweep Yale 3-0. For more information on all the teams, visit fvvc.org.

Spooky good time in Silverdale Hundreds attend opening of annual Nightmare Haunted House

FROM PRINT TO DIGITAL,

A crowd of well over 100 people were lined up for the opening of the Nightmare Haunted House at the Silverdale Community Hall (8760 McLean St.) on Saturday night. The hall was transformed into several scary rooms, including a graveyard, witches’ cauldron, execution room, and children of the corn. By the end of the night, 276 people attended the haunted house, which organizers say makes it one of the largest crowds ever in a ART_00_ASCP78922E_OptB_4.33x3.5.indd single night. The haunted house is open Oct. 24-28 from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are ART_00_ASCP78922E_OptB_4.33x3.5.indd $7, or $5 with a non-perishable ART_00_ASCP78922E_OptB_4.33x3.5.indd food item donation. Pete was a brother in ILWU Local 502, and will be missed by many of his colleagues as well. He is the first of our family to pass on, and we are shocked by his loss. Peter was born on August 1st, 1967 in New Westminster to David and Jo-Anne. After spending his early childhood in New Westminster, our family moved to Mission. Throughout his life, Peter lived in both Mission and Surrey, and he maintained strong emotional and social ties to the community of Silverdale. He was fond of saying that his heart was in our small community and that he felt most at home when here. Pete graduated from Mission Secondary and went on to a career in mechanics, construction and, later, longshoring. Peter was a natural and charismatic leader and an incredibly earnest and driven worker. He was often tasked with leadership duties in his work, and was applauded for his innovative thinking and high standards. Pete was an accomplished gardener, collector and shade-tree mechanic. He was devoted to his pets and they loved him back. Most of all, he was a dedicated and loyal friend who would use his assets to help others without hesitation. He insisted on helping people by fixing cars for little or no money. He often shared his most treasured finds and passions with others. He was particularly happy to do that for his family. Memorial Service is scheduled for 12:30 pm November 3rd, 2018 at Bethel Pentecostal Assembly (32729 7th Avenue, Mission). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peter’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Together We Can at https://twcrecoverylife.org/donations Condolences and memories can be sent to peterhornmemorial@gmail.com

MACKINNON Ronald June 27, 1931 – October 15, 2018 It is with a heavy heart that we say good-bye to our father, papa, great papa, senior papa, grandpa and great grandpa who passed away on October 15, 2018. Ron was predeceased by his wife Bette in 2008 after 55 wonderful years. Ron left a legacy of family values and memories with his children, Larry (Georgia), Pat (Roger), Shirley (Shane), Richard (Shari), Debbie (Ken), 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other cherished friends and relatives. Ron lived many years with his wife and five kids in Coquitlam. Raising a family of 5 was no easy task. Whether it was sports, academics or other endeavors, besides Mom, Dad was our biggest supporter. Once the family home was void of kids and Ron retired in 1986 after 37 years with General Motors, Ron and Bette moved to Lake Errock where they had summered since 1961 making many lifelong friendships. Ron became a member of the Sasquatch Lions in 1989. He served a year as Club President and many years as Club Secretary. He received the 2 highest awards a Lions Club can bestow on a member. The Melvin Jones Fellowship and Lifetime Membership. Until last year, Dad was actively on the go 5 days a week, including time spent at the Mission Lawn Bowling Club. To say Dad loved cards is an understatement. If he wasn’t playing a game of patience or crib with one of his kids or grandkids, he was out at the Seniors Center or Carrington House with his dear friend Marianne. Ron was a true gentleman, a generous, happy and caring man that made a lasting impression on all who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life is being planned for the Spring of 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ron’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice (cancer, diabetes, MS) “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years”
