Chamber advocates for Lacombe business in 2018 Chamber of Commerce welcomes 39 new members Innovation seems to be the buzzword of the day.

Everyone from government leaders to local entrepreneurs are trying to find ways to change; alter; transform; revolutionize what they do.

The same goes for local Chambers of Commerce. As with any member-based organization the need for us to be willing to change is just as important as it is for your local business.

If we keep doing things the same way for too long, people will fail to see the value in what we provide and will seek what they’re looking for elsewhere. This forces us to keep thinking forward and looking at what to add or subtract and it forces us to have honest discussions about what is working and what is not.

One of the things we decided to add this year was a quarterly ‘New Member’ event with the goal of introducing members to each other and to the Chamber. Because there are so many different reasons to join the chamber and different benefits for doing so, it can be overwhelming for new members (and not so new) to get a handle on how to really take advantage of their membership.

After some of our existing members asked about attending we decided to open it up to businesses who might need a refresher, or who have new staff in place. Everyone is welcome, and they have been very successful so far.

Speaking of new members, over the last several years we’ve consistently seen our membership grow about 10 per cent annually. There is generally some attrition each year due to several factors, but we are adding more than we lose, which is certainly the goal.

Monica Bartman, Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce executive director, helped welcome 39 new members to the Chamber this year.

2017 was no different, as we added 39 new members.

Something worth mentioning is that 17 of those new members were new businesses to the City of Lacombe. This a substantial number for a community

our size, and we’re excited to see the momentum continue.

Our Board of Directors is committed to continuing our organization’s work in the community in the many ways that takes place. We’re proud to

partner with other groups, businesses and individuals to move ahead and help sustain a positive environment for economic growth.

Steven Schultz believes we all are born with gifts we need to share LCHS teacher named Chamber’s Citizen of the Year

Steven Schultz, an educator at Lacombe Composite High School recently was named the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year after years of serving his community.

“It is an honour, it is humbling and it is a testimony to the environment we have here in Lacombe,” Schultz said.

Schultz has helped pioneer several robotics programs in Central Alberta along with several green initiatives at LCHS, along with his students, that has led to the school recently being named Canada’s Greenest School “If there wasn’t an environment where these innovative projects could happen or if there wasn’t students that have stepped up and committed - I wouldn’t be winning this award,” he said.

Schultz believes it is the obligation of everyone to share their passions with the world.

“I am a very strong believer that all of us are given great things and if we are only receivers, then our society and culture will fall apart,” he said. “I firmly believe we have an obligation to give back and play it forward.”

Part of what drives Schultz is the need to give back to people the way that others have to him.

“There is lots of of individuals in my life from this community and other people in places where I have lived that believed in me. This award is a tribute to those people investing in my life,” he said.

Schultz was quick to credit others for the success of his students, including the community of Lacombe which has invested sponsorships, expertise, advice and invaluable resources that has allowed LCHS to install solar panels, create a greenhouse, urban garden and most recently introduce a beekeeping program.

skills that will go with each of these students for their whole lives, it is important to me and extremely valuable to these kids,” he said.

The success of the green projects, which have been developed through

the schools Ecovision Club, has led to students being able to monetize their results.

“We have endeavoured into trying to teach students business skills. Along with that has come the need to get expertise. Burman University for example has sent professors who have come and given us business supports,” Schultz said, adding that Cilantro and Chive also stepped up to purchase produce from the school.

“After they took that risk, other people have taken note and now we have our honey in Healthfitters, we have our honey being promoted at Head Hunters and Sweet Capone’s is considering purchasing our honey for coffee and tea,” he said.

“If these businesses didn’t believe in my students, they wouldn’t allow our products to be on their shelves or stores. We would only have artificial businesses to promote to the kids.”

Schultz also thanked Home Hardware and Peavey Mart who have made it easier to purchase supplies

through discounts.

The thing that inspires Schultz to carry on is the gift of being able to see young people go from not believing in themselves to being able take risks and being confident individuals.

“They are giving back themselves and there are countless students I could tell you story after story about where they were lost in a sense and then they found their purpose,” he said.

He added, “I believe that we are created with a passion and gift and we are also born to not hold that inside, but to give it away and serve. To see my students learn that it is about making a community stronger, one act at a time, one service at a time, one dream at a time — that is what really motivates me.”

Commitment to customer service sets Lacombe Storage Center apart

For the staff of Lacombe Storage Center, constant attention to optimum customer service is key to the business’s longevity.

Having first launched operations back in the early 1990s, the business is marking another milestone of success with having been nominated in the ‘Small Business of the Year’ category in this year’s Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce business awards.

“It’s a business that strongly believes in giving back to the community and to give support where it is needed,” said Sue Sage, who has managed the business for just over five years now.

“We have heard that people have come to us because we are huge community supporters – we support Big Brothers Big Sisters and local sports organizations (among others), and we also donate portable storage in Blackfalds to sporting arenas there so that the coaches don’t have to take their equipment home every night. They can lock it up at the diamonds,” she explained.

“I think that if you are a community-minded person yourself, maybe you are looking for the same thing in a small business,” she said. “You are going to support who is giving back.”

Lacombe Storage Center, with Center branches in Drayton Valley and Medicine Hat as well, provides all the traditional types of storage spaces including for boats, vehicles and RVs, plus they are looking into providing covered RV storage possibly as early as next year, she said.

“We also have portable storage which we can bring right to the door,” she said, adding the containers can be placed right on a parking pad for example.

“We also have businesses that take all their old inventory and store it with us so that they are then saving office space.

“If we can find anyway to help, we will look into it.”

They also do a $500 cash giveaway at Christmas.

“It’s always in the spirit of kindness - so that’s coming up!

your new Christmas tradition? They have to come up with a story, and some of them are awesome, some are heartbreaking and some are hilarious.

I am so thankful that I don’t ever have to judge these myself!”

A prize is then handed down from each location – a surefire means of brightening the holiday season.

Ultimately, what also sets Lacombe Storage Center apart is that the staff and owners truly take pride in the day-to-day operations of the business.

“We are also consistent – we don’t stop our rates or hike our rates. It matters to us also what the customers’ experience here was. We take great pride in keeping things in line, and in also keeping things as secure as possible,” she said.

For Sage, providing help to folks who need storage is certainly more than a line of work; it’s an important means of helping out a family or individual as well – particularly when customers may be going through a challenging season.

“Sometimes it’s a divorce, or somebody has passed away,” she said of some of the reasons people may need storage space. “We want customers to know that we can help and make things as stress-free and as comfortable as possible, and that we will (provide service) as quickly as possible, too,” she said. “We also try to make it all as personable as we can,” she said of herself and her fellow employee Jenn Dayday.

As for the Chamber nomination, Sage said it was wonderful and affirming to learn of it. The business also took home Best Customer Service in 2016 and Sage was named ‘Citizen of the Year’ by the Chamber in 2015 as well.

“It’s exciting - to me, that’s the reward in itself - to know that people out there think we are worthy of this nomination especially with so many great small businesses that are coming into town,” she said. “And I like that challenge of how do we stay relevant with so many other businesses popping up!”

At the end of the day, accolades aside, it’s all about the customer.

“We aren’t going to grow and expand just by saying, ‘This is our rate, here’s your stuff, move it in and move it out’. We will never be billed that way.” mark.weber@reddeerexpress.com

For a refreshing and peaceful change of pace, check out Bentley’s Earthy Accents - nominated in the ‘Small Business of the Year’ category for this year’s Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce awards.

“I opened Earthy Accents here in Bentley back in July of 2013,” said owner Leslie Pelz, who had studied floral design at Calgary’s Mount Royal College and has also worked in the floral industry for years.

She has also long dreamed of opening up her own floral business eventually.

“When I took floral design, I took it with the intention of one day having a shop,” she said. “Bentley has been my home for 18 years now so it seemed like the right place to do it,” she added.

Pelz said she was humbled to learn of the Chamber’s nomination for ‘Small Business of the Year’. “It’s really good – the recognition is amazing,” she said.

In the meantime, she describes the beauty of flowers and plants as a powerful ‘feel-good’ kind of thing for so many people.

“I provide floral designs for all occasions – weddings, funerals and special events. And then I also do lots of living decor, like potted plants or terrariums or just interesting creations botanically with bark, twigs, moss and the like for example.”

Intricate and colourful arrangements and designs are of course custom-made as well.

“I am independent and will always be independent,” she said. “So everything is really ‘one of a kind’.”

“I’m also pretty passionate about providing Alberta-made or Canadian-made products,” she added of the range of products featured in the attractive store. “I like to support other small business as much as possible, too.”

As to the name, it may not bring images of at-

tractive floral arrangements immediate to mind, but it does speak to her commitment to being eco-friendly. “I think that applies to everything here.”

Meanwhile, from the get-go, feedback from the local community has always been really positive.

“I think people appreciate that I do support other small businesses,” she said. “They also like the eclectic mix of things here, and they appreciate the design aspect to have something different in terms of flowers,” she explained.

Other products featured in the store are a range of delectable Rogers’ Chocolates, many decor items to choose from, unique containers and vases for plants plus an array of candles.

She’s also busy all year long.

“I try to switch things out for the holiday season, and I also have local vendors come in and do pop-up shops and display their goods every once in a while,” she said of the weeks heading into Christmas.

She also does more workshops through the winter months as well, including terrarium and floral classes, for example. “I also try to offer the space to local artists to come in and do workshops as well.”

For Pelz, seeing others grow passionate about plants and flowers and the possibilities of how they can beautify pretty much any setting is part of what inspires her.

“I want to set you up for success. I want you to love plants, so I like to educate people and send them home with the right plants so they do well,” she said. “I think people appreciate that.”

Ultimately, it’s the glory and the wonder of nature that also inspires her continual quest for breaking new grounds in terms of design and arrangement ideas.

“Every flower is different,” she said. “To me, that is so interesting. You can have 20 sunflowers, and every single one has its own characteristics that make it different from the others. The diversity of what our planet provides is amazing.” mark.weber@reddeerexpress.com

Reds Sports is listening to the Lacombe sports community Two-year-old sports supplier nominated for Small Business of the Year

Reds Sports has been nominated a finalist for the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year.

Reds Sports is quickly becoming a premier sport destination in Central Alberta and that stems from the staffs passion for minor sports in Lacombe.

Tammy Derowin, co-owner of Reds Sports, said the idea behind Reds — which opened in Nov. 2016 — came from hearing members of the community on the sidelines.

“We saw the need after hearing parents talking on the sideline and the arena about how frustrating it is not be able to get the products they need in the city they lived,” Derowin said. “We decided to open it and then take feedback from our customers to meet their needs as they came up in order to bring in quality brands.”

Reds, according to Derowin, is constantly focused on building their brand around community feedback and Manager Matt Van Der Heide said this has led to the store being primarily a team sports supplier, but also provides something for all athletes.

“We have everything for hockey, soccer, baseball — everything in season,” he said. “We have our apparel as well which is a nice add-on because the apparel and footwear really appeals to everyone.

You can come in looking for your specific sporting equipment, but then we the general accessory items you can use for everything.”

Saving a trip to the city is one of the many things Reds hopes to achieve based on feedback from the community.

“We have taken a tiny little store and we have packed it full of relevant product that meets the needs of what people are coming in and asking for.,” Van Der Heide said. “We aren’t forcing our product on people. We are listening and saying, ‘What do you need?’, and then we go and get it.”

Listening to the community has also led Reds to supporting the community they supply. Derowin and her staff has achieved this by allowing customers to pick their own non-profits and sporting associations to support, which allows Reds to wire

their charity sponsorships in the right direction.

“The community is what keeps us open,” she said. “Without the community coming here, we wouldn’t have a business. It is also what keeps our kids active and developing healthy habits.

This city is amazing with all their sports. Minor sports here blows my mind with all the volunteers that come out.”

Being a part of the business community and being recognized as one of the best small business in Lacombe by the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce is something Derowin was a happy thing to hear “It is fantastic because we haven’t even been open two years.,” she said. “Obviously the need we saw must be at least starting to be met. We have been very busy, we have received great feedback and we have teams and families coming in.

“Customer service was something we wanted to focus on, so we work really hard to serve the customer when they walk in the door.”

Van Der Heide added, “Everyone who works here, lives in town and we know there is a lot of great companies here.

“We are in good company by saying we are near the top of that. To say that among these great business and community members that we are right up there with the best is a huge compliment.”

Reds, according to Van Der Heide, will continue to refine what they have built.

“Even though we are two years in, we are defining what categories we need to be stronger at for the community,” he said. “We need to know what categories we have maybe gone to deep with and cut back a little. It is about getting more and more focused on what we actually need in this community.”

One of the next big things for Reds is building on what they have in terms of outdoor supplies, but they will continue to listen to the community.

“If we can get better at managing the categories we have, then we can add in based on what people are asking for. We have a pretty good beat on it todd.vaughan@lacombeexpress.com right now,” he said.

ATB Financial continuing to invest in the community Financial institution nominated for Large Business of the Year.

ATB Financial in Lacombe continues to serve the community and has been nominated for Large Business of the Year by the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce.

Zeke Pipke, branch manager at ATB Financial for six years, said it is a honour to be recognized and that the branch always is trying to look after their customers.

“The different spin we have than traditional banks is that we are Alberta-owned. All the money we bring in or lend stays in Alberta,” Pipke said. “All of our decisions are made in Alberta and our head office is in Edmonton, which is nice because we can get answers quickly.”

A huge part of serving the community of Lacombe for Pipke and his staff is giving back through charity.

“We pride ourselves on doing what we can.

As everyone knows, budgets are tighter, so our donations are somewhat more limited than they used to be so we try and get out and be involved.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters is one we try to be involved with locally and The United Way is one we do at the provincial level.”

Pipke said it is important to support local initiatives because that is what keeps the community going.

“Everyone is searching for the same dollar from everyone and as we know, oil companies in Alberta were very successful in giving money for various non-profit organizations,” he said.

“That has kind of went away, so now we have to look at it from our point of view because these non-profit organizations are very important.”

Pipke said the branch also has community-minded people on staff.

“We have two or three staff that has been with us 30 plus years,” he said. “They are local people who live here right in Lacombe. We have some staff that are from Blackfalds and Ponoka but Lacombe is where we spend most of our time and we try to get involved with Lacombe as much as we can.”

Pipke said the key for ATB Financial staying competitive has been adapting to the needs of their customers.

“We came up with a new advertising technique a few years ago,” he said. “It is called ‘Listening’, so what we try to do is really listen to people and understand people. We want to get away from the competitive role where we advertise interest rates. You can see that everywhere. What we do is put our customers first and try to adapt what we can to their needs.

“We have a simpler approach to mortgages. We have a simpler approach to day-to-day banking.

We customize what to what our customers need.”

We try to stay as informed as we can with the Chamber and

have an active role with the Chamber.”

Pipke added, “We are very honoured to be nominated. We feel we aren’t different than any other financial institution but we have the right people. We try to look after people when they come in the door and we try to accommodate todd.vaughan@lacombeexpress.com the best we can.”

Best Western Plus Lacombe Inn & Suites still growing in Year 3 Hotel nominated for Chamber Large Business of the Year

Best Western Plus Lacombe Inn & Suites has only been in Lacombe for three years and has already been nominated for a Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Large Business of the Year Award.

Jacqui Corkery, owner/operator, said it has been an honour to be nominated considering they only opened in Sept. 2015.

“It is quite an accomplishment and I am pretty proud of our team,” she said. “We are pretty excited to be acknowledged because this team works really hard everyday trying to do the best we can.”

Corkery is grateful for the connections they have been able to make and personally thanked Monica Bartman, Chamber CEO, for here time.

“Monica is awesome. She is really easy to work with and being an outside person, it is good to have a go-to person to network and navigate a new community,” Corkery said. “We are from Ponoka and all of our

The decision to open a hotel in Lacombe came from some

familiar connections and also a recognized a gap.

“There was not really branded hotels here. Lacombe is growing and vibrant and after being part of it, I consider it a very vibrant community,” she said.

“An opportunity was present-

ed and we decided to go ahead with it. Lacombe is awesome. I really enjoy the things this community has to offer and we are excited to be a part it.”

Despite being under the Best Western brand, Corkery is proud that her hotel is locally

owned and operated.

“We all operate under a certain set of standards but we are local,” she said. “From our perspective, and Best Western would agree, our job is to provide the best customer service and product to the guests that come here. Every guest, every time is their mantra and that is what we try to push forward.”

Being able to fulfill their mantra involves insuring the right people are in place.

“I will say to anyone, it is pretty easy to build a hotel but it is the team you create and the people that surround you that makes the business what it is,” Corkery said. “We have a pretty good team here that are committed and working towards the same end goal.”

Since arriving in Lacombe, Corkery has looked to ensure that Best Western is contributing to the community.

“It is very important to be involved in the community, participate and get your name out there,” she said. “We try to work closely with the organizations that are here. We have

done stuff with AFSC, Burman University, we have been involved with golf tournaments, we have supported the Rotary Club since we arrived here and teams give us a lot of business so we try to support them.

“Best Western also supports Curling Alberta and Alberta Minor Hockey.”

The next goal for Best Western will be to attract a restaurant to the west end of their property.

“It would be an asset to the customers we serve,” she said.

“We are always looking to improve what we have going on here and we are building on some of our corporate groups and doing more meetings and banquets.

“Even in Year 3, it is still about getting our name out there. We are still in growing mode.”

Corkery added, “We would be nowhere without the support we had from the community.

Royal LePage Lifestyles dedicated to the Lacombe community Realtor nominated for Chamber Large Business of the Year

Royal LePage Lifestyles has been nominated for the 2018 Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Large Business of the Year Award.

Royal LePage Lifestyles has steadily grown from an independent small business in Lacombe to being nominated for the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce Large Business of the Year.

Michael Gouchie, along with his wife Sandi Gouchie have ran the business together since 2003 and were not expecting to hear they were nominated.

“It was surprising,” Michael said. “I wasn’t expecting it and it is humbling. It is nice to know that people in the community see what you are doing and value what you are doing.”

Royal LePage Lifestyles in Lacombe really began in 1996 when Sandi and Michael opened First Choice Realty. After running First Choice independently for four years, Michael and Sandi joined together with their friend John Nichols — who was running the Royal LePage franchise in Lacombe at the time.

The three of them ran the company together until 2004 when Michael and Sandi bought the business from Nichols and rebranded it as Royal LePage Lifestyles.

The company since then has grown considerably.

“We have always had a relatively small company. We were downtown for awhile and we had two offices, one in the Lacombe Mall. We have plugged away and then last November we acquired 18 more realtors and now have other

offices in Sylvan, Rimbey and Ponoka,” Michael said. “By real estate standards, we aren’t a huge company but we are not a small company anymore. We are mid-sized in the realty field but large for me.”

With the growth over the years, Lifestyles needed more space and chose to move to where they are now located at 5820A AB-2A. “In 2011, Sandy and I built this building and we are honoured and blessed to have something like this. It has been good ride in Lacombe and the community has been good to us,” he said.

Being involved with the Lacombe community is what Michael believes his company stands out for.

“Each realtor in my office is dedicated to many different charities but our main one is the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation,” he said.

“The Foundation helps over 30,000 women and children escape family violence.

“Our little office through commission, donations and other activities have raised over $70,000 for Lacombe Victim Services.”

He added his realtors are involved with various other Lacombe charities including the Rotary Club, Kinsmen, Knights of Columbus, church clubs, minor hockey, the Lacombe Food Bank and A Better World to name a few.

“What makes my office stand out is the realtors in the office really are dedicated to giving back to the community. A lot of realtors and companies do that but I think our company is very focused on being a community-oriented company in Lacombe,” he said.

Being part of the community has also meant supporting other businesses in Lacombe and the Chamber has provided an easy avenue for that.

“They have done a good job of connecting and keeping businesses connected. It is all synergy with all the businesses coming together to have this small town mentality where everyone helps everyone,” he said.

Gouchie said he intends to continue to stay humble in the future.
