Recognition

Langley’s Best of the Best listings an ‘invaluable tool’ Roxanne Hooper rhooper@langleyadvance.com

When Alexis Parks moved to Brookswood years ago from Metrotown, she used the listings in Langley’s Best of the Best to find a doctor, dentist, and optometrist, not to mention several of her now favourite retailers.

The listings proved “invaluable,” she said. And even though she and her family have lived here for eight years now, she still reads the section every year – searching for new and different places worth checking out.

“It’s a good tool. I like to support the little guys, and this is a great way to see what’s out there, and what’s new. I look forward to it every year, and I’m not selling it,” she said, when the Langley Advance surprised her with a call telling her she was the 2018 Best of the Best prize winner.

The Best of the Best titles are selected based on votes cast by Advance readers. Parks was one of hundreds who went online this year to vote and share which Langley businesses stood out for her in terms of customer service and quality products or services.

The faithful Langley Advance reader said she votes most years, and believes she picked at least 20 businesses this time out that she felt worthy of a Best of the Best title.

Those, like Parks, who voted this year were automatically entered to win a $250 Willowbrook Shopping Centre gift card. She hasn’t figured out what she’ll spend it on yet, but looks forward to going shopping.

Readers voted

In its 21st year, Langley’s Best of the Best has always been about honouring Langley and Aldergrove retailers and service providers who go above and beyond, said Advance Publisher Lisa Farquharson.

But there’s more. It’s about encouraging people in Langley to shop local, and it’s also about having readers share news about their good shopping experiences, Farquharson elaborated. She continues to be thrilled by the level of reader engagement in this annual competition.

“It’s our job to highlight these businesses in the community and give a voice to our readers,” she said. And once again, the readers have spoken.

Recognition key

Each of this year’s gold-winningbusinesses will receive certificates they can display in their stores and offices. They will also be invited to a private reception this fall designed to spotlight and celebrate their accomplishments, Farquharson said.

She’s been in business for 10 years, and her company has been a winner each year. She’s frequently asked about their certificates, which are proudly displayed in the front of their Walnut Grove shop.

“I think it has a big impact on people’s confidence in us. I really do,” she said. “It’s very important to us, because, sure, it’s something to brag about. But it also, I think, says something too about our quality,” Lucas-West added.

Their company uses the tagline “customer driven, dedicated to qual-

ity,” and being picked by people in this community as being the Best at what they do locally helps assure her and co-owner Katy Mayrs they’re doing something right.

“This is our 10th year in business and we’ve won 10 years running,” she said, thrilled with this year’s gold-place finish for graphic design and silver-place award for printing.

“Getting it all 10 years is pretty fantastic,” she said.

Similarly, Clipper Street’s Deanna Hutchison is rejoicing in the fact that her company was picked again.

For at least the past six years, the paper craft business in the Willow-

brook area has been selected as the best craft store, best card and stationery store, and best specialty store.

“We’re on a roll,” Hutchison said with a chuckle.

“Honestly, for us, [these awards] show customer support. It shows that we’re doing something right with our customers and customer service, because they believe in us,” she elaborated.

“When people are coming to our store, we feel like they’re coming to our house, and we treat them like that… they’re part of our family.”

While most of their “loyal customers” continue to come from throughout the Lower Mainland, more and more people are travelling from other B.C. and Washington State communities to shop and take classes at Clipper Street.

“It’s huge for us,” Hutchison said.

With big box stores and online shopping impacting their industry in the U.S., Hutchison said she and her staff pride themselves on being flexible enough to adapt and committed enough to ensure their customers have a memorable experience. And those efforts are paying dividends in many ways, including this recognition.

“We feel humbled and honoured to have won, especially when we’re up against a lot of big names,” she concluded.
