The Fraser Valley’s air has never been dirtier.

The region has been subject to an “unprecedented degradation of air quality” in 2018, according to a new report from the staff of the Fraser Valley Regional District. So far, 21 air quality advisories have been issued this year, with more possibly to come, the report says. That’s more than the 19 advisories issued in 2017, which at the time, was by far the most ever recorded in a single year.

In 24 months, 40 air quality advisories had been issued.

Prior to 2017, the region had never before seen more than 10 advisories in a single year; in the two decades between 1996 and 2016, a total of 65 advisories had been issued – an average of fewer than four days each year.

Smoke from wildfires is the most obvious culprit, and the staff notes that trends suggest wildfire seasons are becoming longer and more extreme.

But the report also notes that many of the advisories were attributable to local factors pushing ozone levels beyond the threshold that triggers a health warning. In late July, for instance, particulate matter counts were low, but hot weather, intense sunshine and a prolonged dry spell caused ozone levels to spike.

Brook Morrison, an Abbotsford resident is less than one U.S. state away from returning to Canada — a trip he estimates will take about a month on foot.

Morrison is around four months into his journey along the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Campo, a small town on the California-Mexico border, up to Manning Park along Highway 3 in B.C. The trail is estimated by its stewards to be 4,265 kilometres, with the average hike at five-and-ahalf months, which Morrison aims to match.

Morrison said he takes his inspiration for the hike from his late father.

“We lost him back in 2013, and I feel like the loss of him in my life has kind of inspired me to go on and do this. I think that was one of the big life changes that came along that kind of pushed me to go and do something big like this. He’s always been my inspiration.

He taught me how to fish and boat, and he took us camping as kids.”

Morrison has been hiking for seven or eight years, and after doing the seven-day West Coast Trail hike on Vancouver Island in high school, he heard about the

“I just thought it would be an amazing challenge and an amazing adventure to go on. And then life changes happened and I thought now was the time to do it.”

He wasn’t wrong — it was a challenge, but it didn’t come so much from the trail itself.

“People call it the NorCal blues up in Northern California, and I had that too,

because that’s when I began solo hiking, and that’s when this huge mental challenge kicks in.”

But the journey has also been one of remarkable natural beauty. Morrison’s Instagram profile is full of pictures of incredible landscapes, sparkling nighttime skies and a sprawling range of ecosystems from towering redwoods to Morrison’s personal favourite so far — the Sierra Nevada moun-

tain range in California.

“It is the most amazing place I’ve been in my life,” Morrison said. “I felt so at home to be suddenly out of the desert and into the mountains. It felt a lot like home to be up in the alpines.”

In an interview last week, Morrison said he expected to be crossing into Washington State last weekend, with about a month left to go to hit Canada.

The News’ analysis found slate members have disagreed with one another very rarely, but also that no vote has come down to four AbbotsfordFirst members on one side and four independent councillors on the other.

Barkman has been the most frequent dissenter on council, casting minority votes on 30 different issues – nearly always either alone or with just one fellow councillor. He had been on vacation and couldn’t be reached

for comment before the original article was published.

“I have nothing against the people in the slate,” he said, before saying independence leads to better decisions. “I think the rest of council can get complacent and maybe not do as good a job on homework or researching things when you know that there’s always five people who can vote the same way.

I don’t think that’s good for Les Barkman governance.

“I just can’t believe that on 99.9 [per cent of] things, everybody is thinking the same way.”

Mayoral candidate Gerda Peachey also says more debate is needed.

“If nine people who were elected to represent all of the city, sit down to publicly deliberate on important matters brought before them, then the public should reasonably be able to anticipate there will be some robust discussion on the motion at hand,” she said.

Coun. Les Barkman says the lack of dissent at Abbotsford’s council table isn’t necessarily healthy, and suggested the AbbotsfordFirst slate’s control of four votes has resulted in less independent thought among local politicians.

Last week, The News reported that Abbotsford council had voted unanimously on 96 per cent of the 2,400 motions cast at public meetings over the last three-and-a half years. The analysis prompted reaction from several people gearing up for campaigns as the fall’s municipal election approaches.

Markus Delves, the president of the AbbotsfordFirst elector organization that boasts four council members, wrote to The News to say the unanimity was a sign that city hall “is functioning well, both at the staff level and at the council table.”

Mayor Henry Braun and AbbotsfordFirst Couns. Kelly Chahal, Brenda Falk and Sandy Blue only found themselves in the minority on an issue on three occasions or fewer. And Coun.

Ross Siemens only dissented a few more times.

Independent Coun. Dave Loewen, whose found himself in the minority on a similar number of issues to Siemens, wrote on LinkedIn that the agreement stems from work early in the term to lay out an agenda and vision for the coming four years.

“Speaking for myself, if I know that a given proposal matches council’s priorities and meets all the requirements set out in policies and bylaws that we as council have already accepted, it becomes a more straight-forward process of approval and eliminates frivolous debate,” Loewen wrote on LinkedIn. “In short, this council has been the most effective council

Shouldn’t be a legal ruling It’s been observed that a measure of legality is not the same thing as a measure of morality.

Thursday’s decision by the Supreme Court not to hear the appeal of the class-action lawsuit against the government on behalf of disabled Canadian veterans – championed by the White Rock-based Equitas Society – is likely on the same basis as the BC Court of Appeal’s dismissal of the same case last December. Namely that courts can only enforce actual legislation.

That’s a triumph of legalese, and, no doubt, considered a victory by Department of Justice lawyers who have been arguing that Canada owes “no duty of care” to its disabled veterans.

But is it a victory for Canada, and for the young men and women – often sacrificing life and limb – who have served their country selflessly for generations? Can any of us look in a mirror and truly say we owe those injured in the service of our country’s democratic ideals no duty of care?

There was no doubt for politicians in the aftermath of the bloodbath of the First World War that we owed disabled veterans something.

That’s when the Pension Act was brought into law, providing disability pensions for veterans for close to nine decades afterwards.

Then, in 2005, the Martin government introduced the New Veterans Charter – embraced by the Harper government the next year – replacing pensions with lump-sum payments. If it was supposed to be a new deal for veterans, it was a bad one – something that is hard not to see as a cost-cutting measure instituted by our leaders comfortably remote from combat zones.

During the 2015 election campaign, current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the pensions ought to be reinstated. The same year, the House of Commons unanimously endorsed a resolution calling on the government to establish a “moral covenant” to provide compensation and support services to disabled veterans.

But these were words, not laws.

Equitas vows to continue the battle to establish a duty of care and reinstate disabled veterans pensions. Perhaps, in time, they will sway public opinion to such an extent that politicians can no longer retreat behind legal excuses.

B.C. Views Employers in B.C. are nervously awaiting the results of the B.C. government’s overhaul of the Labour Code, to see if the traditional swings of provincial politics repeat themselves.

Since the minority NDP government took office a year ago, they have seen the shift to a new payroll tax to pay for health care, increases to the minimum wage totalling 34 per cent over four years, phasing out the alcohol server wage, increasing corporate taxes and imposing the first hike in the carbon tax on fuels in seven years.

Now the government is awaiting a report from

its appointed committee on whether to do away with secret ballot votes for union certification, prevent employers from communicating with employees during a certification, and generally reverse changes made in 2003 after the B.C. Liberals took office.

Labour Minister Harry Bains tells me the report was delayed for a month at the committee’s request, and should be out shortly. He wouldn’t comment directly on the long-standing demand by the B.C. Federation of Labour and others to do away with secret ballot certification votes, except to say employees should be free to choose “without interference from anybody.”

We’ve seen how that’s going to work in public construction, where every employee will be forced to join one of 19 selected international unions for the duration of the job. One obstacle faced by Bains is that B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has indicated he won’t support

scrapping certification votes.

B.C. Liberal labour critic John Martin isn’t reassured.

“Last year, Andrew Weaver kind of drew a line in the sand on that one, and we did see the NDP back down,” Martin told me. “But since then, there’s been a realization that there’s a lot of huff and bluff from Andrew on that. So I expect them to bring that one in.”

In his mandate letter appointing Bains to cabinet, Premier John Horgan also directed him to update the Employment Standards Act, unchanged since the last years of the previous NDP government. One of the demands made by the union-backed B.C. Employment Standards Coalition is to end the “second-class status” of farmworkers, setting a “minimum-wage floor” that would be imposed on the traditional piecework rates.

“When [business and labour] work together they create wealth,” Bains sai . “That’s the kind of business environment that I would like to facilitate, working with them both.

“I think we are in a good position to do that.

We have a strong economy, we have a lot more jobs than there are people.”

As was confirmed last week by audited financial statements, B.C. managed a big surplus for the fiscal year that ended in March, despite $3 billion in additional spending by the new government.

One thing for sure about good economic times, they don’t last forever.

This unanimous decision by the Federal Court shows how flawed our National Energy Board (NEB) process was.

We argued three years ago that the NEB had not adequately addressed the concerns of many First Nations stakeholders, along with countless other groups and individuals directly affected by the KM/Trans Mountain expansion plans. If the NEB had done it’s work properly, they would very likely have denied the application based on serious safety issues and environmental consequences.

That would not have been politically acceptable. Instead, they chose to ignore concerns. Lengthy court challenges ensued. Instead of waiting for the decisions of these trials, KM and our Canadian government unwisely moved ahead. Now we taxpayers are on the hook for a hopelessly flawed project.

The only reasonable way forward now is starting the NEB process over, respecting the concerns of First Nations, corridor saftey issues and environmental consequences.

Josh Reynolds running for council Founder of local marketing agency

The founder of a local marketing agency is running for Abbotsford council.

In a press release, Josh Reynolds says he hopes to focus on affordable housing and the development of small businesses, while hoping to increase representation of the thousands of college and university students that live in the city..

Reynolds is founder and director of Illustrate Collective, and also works at Summit Pacific College in Abbotsford.

He is executive director of the War Zone Education Project, a non-profit that funds educational initiatives in South Sudan and refugee camps in neighbouring Uganda.

Reynolds say he also wants to see more progress tackling homelessness in Abbotsford.

According to his website, Reynolds is originally from Ontario, but moved to Abbotsford in 2012 to attend college.

He is currently pursuing his Masters of Business Admin-

Man sentenced for domestic assault, crashing into cop truck

A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to an additional four months in jail and a two-year driving ban in in relation to a domestic assault in Abbotsford in April that ended with a police pursuit and a collision.

Daniel Staples-Taylor was sentenced Aug. 24 in Abbotsford provincial court on three charges to which he previously pleaded guilty: assault causing bodily harm, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and fleeing from a peace officer. Charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and kidnapping were stayed.

A 36-year-old man who is alleged to have kicked a car without provocation and then robbed the occupants of their cellphone has now been charged.

Johnathan Rath has been charged with robbery and uttering threats in relation to the incident on Aug. 25.

“We contained the residence and made some calls. The subject of the complaint came

out of the residence, so he was compliant, and was taken into custody,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Dhillon following the incident.

Police at the time

said the arrested man is known to them and has a history of violence.

According to the provincial court database, Rath’s criminal record includes convictions for assault, mischief, using a forged document, and breaching his probation and bail conditions.

He is also before the courts on several other charges in Abbotsford this year: theft under $5,000 in May, two counts of assault in June, and one count of mischief in August.

$15K to Foundry Abbotsford supports walk-in counselling

Envision Financial Community Endowment grant The First West Foundation has awarded Foundry Abbotsford with $15,000 through its Envision Financial Community Endowment.

Foundry Abbotsford provides local youth and their families with support for their mental-health, substance-use and overall wellness needs.

The grant will support walk-in counselling for an estimated 300 local youth at Foundry Abbotsford, which opened in June 2018.

“Being able to offer same-day walk-in counselling allows youth to get help when they need it and can prevent problems from escalating,” said Simone Maassen, the manager of youth services at Abbotsford Community Services.

“We’re so grateful that the First West Foundation is supporting this innovative service.”

Walk-in counselling is currently offered Wednesdays and Thursdays at Foundry from 3 to 6 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

After identifying the most pressing issue in a youth’s life, the counsellor assists them using a strengths-based approach.

If youth need further assistance, they are referred to other longer-term services, many of which are available at Foundry.

“It’s exciting to see Foundry Abbotsford’s innovative approach to wellness coming to life and we’re proud to support their important efforts to build strong and resilient communities,” said Susan Byrom, executive director of the First West Foundation.

“Their integrated, collaborative and accessible approach to

mental-health programming is going to have a significant impact on youth and families in the Fraser Valley.”

The Envision Financial Community Endowment awarded $367,000 to 33 different B.C. organizations.

This year, grants in the Envision region are primarily for projects and programming aimed at those who are affected by a wide range of socio-economic factors.

A group of about 30 current and former drug users turned out at an Abbotsford park to do a cleanup and bubble release Friday morning to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. The event, put on by the Abbotsford chapter of Drug War Survivors, included lunch from local businesses, and cleaning supplies from the Fraser Health Authority and the City of Abbotsford.

Harvey Clause, a member of the DWS steering committee and one of the organizers of the event, said he had hoped to see a few more people, but was still happy with the turnout.

“Not bad. I expected maybe a Vidleione little bit more, but not bad for on ws.com abbyne the time we had to organize this.

We only had a couple of weeks to organize this and we got it done.

Not bad for having literally no money to do it with,” Clause said.

“We had a pretty good group of people, here, today. Everyone pitched in and helped.

That shows a community and that shows a sense of helping.”

That sense of community, Clause said, is one of the important factors for the safety of the homeless population in Abbotsford. Prior to the former tent city being formed, Clause had lived in Grant Park, where the event was held. Now, since the tent city has disbanded with bylaws that no longer allow homeless to keep tents in parks during daytime, he said that community is missing.

“We had a little bit of a community, you know? We had a group of people that were together. We were just starting to be a community. Then they broke us up, basically, and sent us out to be out of sight, out of mind,” Clause said.

He said being “out of sight, out of mind” means not being able to call any place home or to keep their possessions in one place and not having that consistent community around, watching out for one another.

During Friday’s event, prior to the bubble release, Mayor Henry Braun had made an appearance and spoken briefly with the group.

Following the cleanup, members of DWS spoke over a small speaker about their experiences with friends dying of overdose and with the overdose crisis, while the group listened and blew bubbles, a symbol for releasing the souls of friends fallen to overdose.

Ian Thompson of Langley was getting a little fed up with working as a long-distance trucker when he talked to a friend about working in the television and film industry.

“I got tired of driving all night, every night,” Thompson said.

Then the friend, who worked in film and TV production, showed him a pay stub.

“I have to do this,” Thompson thought.

His career path was a familiar one for people in the rapidly growing film and television production sector in B.C. He went to a union hall to see about employment and soon began working as an on-call driver.

“I started gradually getting phone calls.”

After working the minimum number of days to become a union member, the workload increased.

The hours can be extremely long and irregular, but people who are willing to work hard will do well, Thompson said.

Eventually, he started his own company, 911 Filmcars Inc. which provides police, fire, military and other specialty vehicles to television and movie productions.

Everything from pumper trucks to big rigs, motorcycles, buses and ambulances are available at the company, which has become the largest supplier of emergency vehicles and transit buses to the film and TV production business in Western Canada.

Thompson’s advice to people considering a career in the industry is to go for it.

He said when people think about the movies and TV, they sometimes make the mistake of assuming they aren’t qualified.

Graffiti Flags and Money Games exhibit opens at Kariton Art Gallery

This pieces by artist Christopher Friesen is on display at Graffiti Flags and Money Games, which opens Sept. 15 at the Kariton Art Gallery.

Kariton Art Gallery’s newest exhibit, Christopher Friesen’s Graffiti Flags and Money Games, opens Saturday, Sept. 15.

An opening reception takes place that day from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery, at 2387 Ware St. The exhibit explores the evolution of currency, from gold to paper bills to the many cryptocurrencies that exist today.

Inspired by Friesen’s financial back-

ground, the show’s aesthetic is a striking contrast to his works featured in Search by Image or Scroll Through History (at The Reach and Mennonite Heritage Museum in Abbotsford, respectively).

Friesen’s screen-printing and gestural painting technique used in his pieces is a commentary on the increased production of bills in the developed world, specifically

the United States.

“Every piece in the exhibition is an original that … contains gesture and aesthetic decisions unlike the traditional print-making process where flaw-free reproduction is valued,” he says.

The eighth annual Touch a Truck event rolls into the parking lot at the Abbotsford Centre (33800 King Rd.) on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dick, Padgham earn national baseball silver Pair of Abbotsford baseball products compete on national stage

A pair of Abbotsford baseball pitching talents recently excelled on the national stage.

Local players Raine Padgham and Cardel Dick were part of the silver-medal-winning Team B.C. squad at the Baseball Canada 13U AAA National Championships, which wrapped up in Ontario on Aug. 26.

Padgham, who recently helped her club team, the Burnaby Braves, win the 13U AAA provincial title, became the first girl to ever pitch against boys at the 13U AAA National Championships.

B.C. opened with an 11-5 win over Manitoba on Aug. 23, with Dick collecting a team-high three hits in the victory. B.C. continued its strong play with a 10-0 win over Prince Edward Island on Aug. 24, Dick produced two hits and drove in four runs, while Padgham also drove in one.

Ontario defeated B.C. 3-1 on Aug. 24, but B.C. bounced back with a 13-1 win over Quebec Grey on Aug. 25. The wins continued on Aug. 26 for Team B.C., with a 12-0 thrashing of Nova Scotia to advance to the national final later that day and a re-match against the Ontario team that handed B.C. its lone loss.

after three innings, but B.C. tied the game up only for costly errors to lead to an eventual 8-5 win for Ontario.

Dick finished with a batting average of .474, nine hits and a teamhigh eight runs batted in during the six games. Padgham contributed offensively with three hits and two runs batted in.

Dick made two starting pitching appearances, and was credited with one loss, 11 strikeouts and just two earned runs in eight total innings pitched. Padgham started one game, but allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning. She also recorded two strikeouts in her one history-making appearance.

Padgham’s appearance at nationals comes off the provincial win, which saw the Braves win all five games they competed in to capture the crown. They won the championship with a 6-0 win over the White Rock Tritons on Aug. 11 at Abbotsford’s Exhibition Park.

The Braves opened the event with a 10-5 win over the Tri-City Thunder, a 12-2 win over the Ladner Red Sox, a 10-0 win over the Abbotsford’s Raine Padgham helped Team B.C. earn a national silver medal at the U13 AAA national baseball championships.

Cowichan Valley Mustangs, and a 10-2 victory over the Chilliwack Cougars in the semifinal on the morning of Aug. 11.

DAVIES Fred Joseph May 3, 1922 – August 27, 2018 Fred passed away peacefully on Monday, August 27, 2018 at the young age of 96. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Gwendolyn, and his 5 brothers. He is survived by his sons Bill (Joyce) and Terry (Shirley); 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and extended family and friends.

NAWROT Robert Ryan William January 4, 1999 - August 28, 2018 We are devastated by the sudden and unexpected loss of the life of our beloved son, brother, and extended family member. Robert Nawrot passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2018. He is survived by his loving family, parents Kyle and Cyndi, his sisters Stephanie Ohlmann, Jacqueline (Landon) Rempel, Chantelle and Breanna Nawrot and his dog Dante. He is also survived by his nephews Geoffrey and Teddy Rempel, his grandmothers Judy Heinrichs and Clara Nawrot and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his grandfathers Robert Heinrichs and William Nawrot. He was a bright light in our lives. He loved deeply, had a soft and compassionate heart, and a smile that lit up the room. Everyone who knew him loved him, and he loved and cared for all of them.

Robert was an incredibly talented hockey goalie. Whether he was a player, a referee, or a student mastering his next skill, Robert loved to be on the ice. Through hockey he was able to impact the lives of so many people far beyond our city. Beyond this, he had a passion to train his dog in protection, tracking and detection.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gateway Community Church, 2884 Gladys Avenue, Abbotsford, BC.
