Tale of a maroon beret Mission’s Monty Marsden spent 25 years in the Canadian military. A maroon beret, Monty made 271 parachute jumps in his career and was part of Operation Varsity, a successful airborne forces operation launched by Allied troops that took place toward the end of the Second World War. After his military career, Monty began to work for the correctional services and eventually moved to Mission in 1985.

I picked up during the war when I used to imitate Montgomery.”

It must have been a good imitation of Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery, as the name stuck with Marsden for the rest of his life.

Born in Longford Mills, Ont., Monty spent the first 18 years of his life in the small town before deciding to join the army. He spent the next 25 years in the service.

“I was looking for excitement, and my cousin came home from the parachute school and he had fancy boots on and a beret and all that stuff. I said, ‘That’s for me.’”

He joined the Canadian military in 1944 in order to fight in the Second World War. “It was exciting for me. You’re a teenager, looking for adventure.”

He joined the paratroopers in the Canadian army, but the unit was too small to be by itself so it was attached to the British 6th airborne army.

That’s where he became a maroon beret.

“I’ve never regretted it,” Monty said.

He explained that maroon berets are members of the airborne unit and received plenty of training.

“We did 25-mile runs and quick marches.

One of the punishments is if you didn’t get

up at 6 a.m. within five minutes, you went out for a five-mile jog in the morning, as a reminder to get up. That was a lesson in itself.”

Monty participated in Operation Varsity, a successful airborne forces operation launched by Allied troops that took place toward the end of the Second World War (March 24, 1945). It involved more than 16,000 paratroopers and several thousand aircraft. It was the largest airborne operation in history to be conducted on a single day and in one location.

It was also the operation during which Monty was wounded. He was shot in the thigh.

Because he was wounded, Monty stayed an extra year in England, where he was stationed at Trafalgar Square.

After the war, he returned home for a month on leave. Uncertain what to do next, Monty happened to meet two fellow officers who suggested that he stay in the military.

Twenty-five years later, he was still there.

“I looked after parachutes for the Canadian army. There were 5,000 parachutes to look after. There were no mistakes allowed.”

Working at the parachute training centre in Rivers, Man., Monty completed 271 jumps in his career.

He said military life suited him; after all, he had a strict upbringing as a child.

He was 43 when he left the armed forces. His wife, who he affectionately refers to as “the boss,” told him she wanted to go to B.C., where she had family.

Once in Maple Ridge, Monty changed careers and became part of the correctional service.

He worked in corrections for 17 years before finally retiring.

In 1985, his wife made another decision.

“My boss said, ‘We are going to go to Mission.

It’s nice and quiet and only four blocks long, a little village.’ But now...”

For the past year and a half, Monty has been living at Chartwell Carrington House. Much to his surprise, he discovered another resident there was also a maroon beret.

“We talk quite a bit,” Monty said.

They share stories and have a collection of old photos and memorabilia.

According to Monty, there were only about Monty Marsden holds an old photo of his comrades. He spent 600 Canadian maroon berets, so the chance of 25 years in the Canadian military.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 450°F. 2. Toss cauliflower, oil, marjoram, salt and pepper in a large bowl.

3. Place on rimmed baking sheet and roast 15-20 min until starting to soften and brown on the bottom.

4. Toss roasted cauliflower with vinegar and sprinkle with cheese.

5. Return to the oven and roast an additional 5-10 min until the cheese is melted and any moisture has evaporated.

Seasonal Flu & the Importance of Flu Vaccine

WHAT IS A FLU? The term flu is loosely used in many conversations to refer to an acute febrile illness. Some of the uses are correct while others such as stomach flu as used to mean gastritis are incorrect. Strictly speaking, a flu is an acute respiratory illness caused by Influenza A or B virus.

HOW TO TELL IF YOU HAVE THE FLU: Influenza virus infection may occur suddenly or develop within several days leading to: A non-productive cough, fevers, headaches, nasal discharge, weakness, diarrhea (especially among children), tachycardia, fatigue and red, watery eyes.

COMPLICATIONS OF THE FLU: Most people recover in days to weeks with no residual adverse effects of the disease. Some of the complications that have been associated with the flu include upper and lower respiratory tract infection such as pharyngitis and pneumonia that are life-threatening and require hospitalization.

PREVENTION OF INFLUENZA A AND B VIRUS INFECTION: This is the best way to control any disease and the easiest way to prevent yourself from catching the flu is to wash your hands often with soap and water or use alcohol hand rubs whenever you get the chance.

However, the single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated against it. This triggers the body to produce antibodies against the virus’ antigens when they gain access to the body.

Travelers to the tropical region should be vaccinated regardless of the time as the flu occurs throughout the year in these regions. A major setback in the efficacy of the virus is that the Influenza virus is remarkable for its high rate of mutation, compromising the ability of the immune system to protect against new variants that arise every season. Consequently, new vaccines are produced each year to match circulating viruses and thus the need for annual vaccination.

Staying away from people who are sick is recommended as it avoids contact with the causative microorganism. Similarly, when you are sick it is recommended that you “return the favor” by staying at home, avoiding crowded places, and covering your mouth and nose when sneezing. This limits your body from shedding the virus to the environment and people near you.

WHAT SIDE EFFECTS CAN YOU GET FROM THE FLU VACCINE? Contrary to previous studies, modern research indicates that flu vaccine

neither causes the flu infection or autism as you might have heard previously.

The researchers who put forward these conclusions have retracted these comments having realized that their studies were flawed and marked with confounding factors.

Some common side effects expected with administration of the drug include: Mild fever, mild rash, redness, or soreness at the site of injection and generalized muscle aches.

These effects are self-limiting and usually go away in a few days.

HOME-BASED CARE DURING A FLU INFECTION: The best thing is to stay home, do not go to school or work until your fever has been gone for at least 24 hours, without taking fever-reducing medicine, such as Tylenol.

For healthcare workers, stay away from your patients until you are no longer coughing.

If you must encounter people, always cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when sneezing or coughing and not the palm of your hand since this exposes the palm to the microorganisms that can be passed to another person while shaking hands.

Remember to practice the prevention methods discussed above as this is the best form of treatment and above all if symptoms persist seek medical advice!

When the days start to get shorter and colder, you know it’s time to prepare your home and garden for winter. To help you out, here’s a handy list of outdoor chores to get done this fall: PLANT AUTUMN BULBS: before the first frost, plant the bulbs that you want to bloom next spring (tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, etc.).

SWEEP THE CHIMNEY: sweep your chimney — or have it swept by an expert — in order to reduce fire hazards. Moreover, check the chimney cap or put one in place. This simple device prevents animals from being able to sneak into your home.

PROTECT WEAKER PLANTS: cover the bases of weaker, dormant perennials with mulch (as required by your hardiness zone). Also, consider pro­ tecting recently planted shrubs and the trunks of younger trees.

CLEAN UP THE GROUNDS: to avoid the possibility of carpenter ant and ro­ dent infestations, remove all dead leaves, branches and firewood you find near the walls and foundation of your home. In taking this step, you’ll also be remo­ ving fire hazards.

FENCE THE VENTS: to keep rodents out of your home, place grills on all of your vents (i.e. extractor fan, bathroom fan, dryer, central vacuum, etc.). If you already have grills in place, inspect them to make sure they’re in good shape. Also, make certain that each valve closes properly.

RELOCATE POTTED PLANTS: if you have plants that need to stay warm, it’s time to bring them inside.

CHECK THE FOUNDATION AND EXTERIOR WALLS: locate and seal all cracks to prevent water from see­ ping in and causing damage to your home.

CUT THE WATER SUPPLY: empty then store garden hoses and shut all outdoor water outlets to prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting over winter.

CLOSE THE POOL: drain the water, remove the skimmer basket, empty the filter, remove the pool ladder and set up the winter cover.
