What is Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock?

C

ops for Cancer Tour de Rock is a two-week bicycle journey in which a team of police officers and other first responders ride the length of Vancouver Island, visiting 27 communities, raising money to fight childhood cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society, Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock is proud to be the largest charitable supporter of childhood cancer research in Canada.

Since 1998, Tour de Rock has raised more than $24 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. The story goes back to 1994, when a group of Edmonton police officers shaved their heads in support of a boy who had lost his hair due to chemotherapy. By 1997, the Cops for Cancer head shaves had reached Victoria. The local police wanted to try something bigger and the Tour de Rock was born.

Through research funded by Vancouver Island through this amazing fundraiser, childhood cancers can now be detected earlier, better treatments are available, and more children are surviving and thriving. amp Goodtimes looks like any other kids’ summer camp, but this camp is a refuge for cancer-stricken children and their families. Run by the Canadian Cancer Society, about 600 children attend camp each July and August, without charge. It costs approximately $1,500 to send a child to camp and in the 21 years of Tour de Rock - you Vancouver Island - have sent over 9,000 kids to this magical place! Thank you.

Why We Ride

ancer changes lives. It is a devastating disease. But to hear the words, “your child has cancer” is unimaginable in its pain.

Childhood is gone in one moment and replaced with tests, chemo, radiation and so much more. This is why each year the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock rides Vancouver Island; to make a direct and significant difference in the lives of kids battling cancer.

Each of the 22 Vancouver Island 2018 Tour de Rock riders has their own motivation to apply to ride and spend months fundraising and training. Some apply after seeing the power of Tour de Rock and what it can do. For others, it’s the people they know, the ones who have fought cancer. In one case, the fight is personal.

Nicole Emery, a volunteer with the Oyster River Fire Department and one of the 2018 Tour de Rock team, was first diagnosed with cancer when she was just three years old.

“I had a tumour in my sinus behind my eye that was also pushing

on the roof of my mouth,” she said.

“It was inoperable because of its location, so the treatment option was radiation followed by chemo.”

Nicole Emery It would take a year-and-a-half to get rid of it and only spurred more medical treatments.

“Unfortunately, radiation at that age is quite damaging,” explained Nicole. “The bones that were radiated in my face remained the size of my 3-year-old self.”

Reconstructive surgery started when she was 11 and went on until she was 18. Nine years ago Nicole learned that she had thyroid cancer as a result of the radiation she received when she was a child. “Guess what? More surgery to remove my thyroid this time,” she said.

Today, Emery is “thriving and well,” and eager to make a difference.

“I want to be a beacon of hope for all the kids battling cancer and also for their parents. I feel hope can make a huge difference in someone’s daily outlook and happiness,” Emery added.

Next we go to Victoria Police Sgt. Derek

Tolmie who has been part of the fight since Tour de Rock first came together in the mid-90s.

It all started when a friend asked him to take part in a mass head shaving fundraiser against cancer. It was 1996. His policing career was just starting out and coincidentally his mom had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

“This diagnosis hit our family hard,” said Tolmie. “I felt helpless and I wanted to do something to support my mom through her health challenge.”

So when he was asked to shave his Sgt. Derek Tolmie head in exchange for donations, Tolmie jumped at the opportunity, raising more than $200 in one day.

His work in the fight against cancer didn’t stop there. In 1997, Tolmie, along with Oak Bay Police Constable Mark Knoop and Peter Dawson, volunteer President of the Canadian Cancer Society, went on to help coordinate Victoria’s first Cops for Cancer mass head shaving event. It involved 188 volunteers and raised more than $125,000 in four hours.

The first Tour de Rock ride was in 1998 and has since raised more than $24 million for pediatric cancer research and support programs.

Then, just last fall Tolmie was personally affected by a cancer diagnosis again.

This time it struck his father who was vacationing in Germany.

“One month to the day after his diagnosis, he was gone,” he said.

“I am not riding this year because cancer took my dad,” explained Tolmie. “I’m riding because cancer did not take my mom.”

Police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and special guests are all united hoping to make a difference one ride, one fundraiser at a time.

While some ride in honour of the friends and family taken too soon by cancer, others - who are fortunate enough to have not felt cancers touch – ride for the opportunity to improve the life of a child suffering from cancer. Any parent, aunt, uncle, sister, brother, and friend can imagine the heartbreak they would feel if a child in their life was diagnosed with cancer. Above all, we ride so that kids can be kids. Cancer changes lives. So can you.
