Abbotsford going for “five blooms” in 2018 Communities in Bloom contest Inspired by their 2017 “four blooms” rating, the Abbotsford Communities in Bloom Community Team is looking to improve in all areas in order to qualify for the national contest.

“This is our second year in the provincial competition and our goal is five out of five blooms,”

said Co-Municipal Lead Susan Federspiel. If Abbotsford receives five blooms at the provincial level then they advance to the national Communities in Bloom contest.

On July 19, provincial judges will visit Abbotsford, looking at the city as a whole. From businesses to residences

and institutions, Communities in Bloom judges score participants in eight areas: heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape, turf and groundcovers, floral displays, tidiness, environmental action and community involvement.

Comprised of 13 members from different organizations, Abbotsford’s 2018 Communities in Bloom Community Team is asking for the community’s help in improving their score.

Happening in June and July, they have planned a number of activities to support this year’s contest.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on June 23, eight residential gardeners are opening up their

gardens to the public as part of the Communities in Bloom celebration.

Tickets for the Garden Tours are $20 and available from Tanglebank Gardens, Tourism Abbotsford and The Reach Gallery Museum.

Proceeds will support Abbotsford Communities in Bloom, Auguston Community Garden and Abbotsford Community Services’ Garden Project.

Get Your Bloom On! Residential Garden Showcase is an easy and fun way for residents to participate in Communities in Bloom.

Until July 20, residents can upload horizontal pictures of their garden or container garden and be entered to win a grow pack. More information is at abbotsfordcity.ca/

collaborate on enhancing their community, the BC Communities in Bloom is a province-wide recognition and award program.

The program provides a framework for participants to reinvigorate and enhance their community’s livability.

Communities in Bloom is a Canadian non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national contest.

Easily recognized by their unique pink eyes, the delicate BC Warba New Nugget Potatoes are harvested before they set their skin. Refrigerate until ready to cook to keep them from discolouring.

ON THE NOSE Very aromatic with notes of Anjou pear, fresh cut pineapple, jasmine, and lemon custard.

ON THE PALATE Impeccably balanced, with a surprisingly creamy texture and weight to the mid palate, followed by citrussy acid that helps the wine finish dry, but with gobs of tropical fruit.

INGREDIENTS 2 lbs BC Warba New Nugget Potatoes, or use any Nugget Potatoes later in season 1/2 Tbsp salt for boiling potatoes + 1/2 tsp more for seasoning the sauce 1 Tbsp olive oil or butter 1/2 medium onion finely diced 1 garlic clove pressed 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 1/4 cup fresh dill chopped INSTRUCTIONS Rinse gently under running water, if necessary. As BC Warba New Nugget potatoes are harvested before they set their skin, there’s no need to scrub. Choose potatoes that are all the same size to ensure even cooking. You can cut them in half if desired or leave them whole, as I prefer. Place potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water.

The Farmer and the Foodie My parents cultivated a large vegetable garden on our farm, the potato patch easily taking up half the plot. Thankfully we all enjoyed this inexpensive way to feed our family of nine. The dying foliage in mid-summer signaled harvest time, and Dad, with a pitchfork in his work-worn hands, would make his way up and down the rows carefully digging at the mounds to unearth the potatoes.

We children followed closely behind, our hands sifting through the warm dirt and calling out in victory whenever we thought we had discovered the largest one. The harvest was stowed in wooden bins in the root cellar, covered in burlap sacks and lime dust for winter storage.

How to create an eye-catching gallery wall

Gallery walls, also called moment walls, are one of today’s hottest home decor trends. Gallery walls enable homeowners to create visually appealing groupings of photos, frames, wall art, and much more to dress up any room in the house.

Gallery walls can make a statement in the living room, add finesse to an entryway or showcase special items along a staircase. One need only do a quick internet search or browse through lifestyle magazines to see examples of gallery walls for inspiration.

Anyone with a little determination can design a gallery wall.

• Find your muse. The first step to creating a gallery wall is to choose a theme. If floral prints are your thing or you love abstract art, build your gallery around these elements. You can even use colour or frame style as the coordinating factor.

• Take your time. Some people rush into creating gallery walls, and that can be a mistake. Spend time picking out pieces and trying different combinations before you take out the hammer and hardware. The mix should be captivating and look like it was a curated collection. Some pieces can be high-end, while others may be picked up at flea markets or even be your own artwork or photography.

• Experiment with dimensions and levels. Gallery walls need not be restricted to flat photos on a wall. Texture and depth can be used in wall designs. Intersperse shelving, sconces, wooden letters, clocks, and more to make the gallery even more eclectic. Feel free to build the gallery around items that are in the house, such as windows or televisions. This can help electronics blend into the design.

• Establish your focal point. Pottery Barn suggests making the center of the display at eye level, roughly 66 inches off the ground. Then build the gallery out from around that focal point. There are many patterns that can be built into the gallery, from “spiral” to “centered” to “reflection” designs.

• Create a template. Lay the gallery design on the floor and cut newspapers or other paper to the size of each piece. Use masking tape to position these guides on the wall, trying a few arrangements until you are happy with the finished product. Then replace the paper with the artwork.

• Hang items with precision. Don’t skimp on technique.

Use a ruler, level and the right tools. This ensures pieces are straight and in line with others.

Gone are the days when large pieces of artwork fill empty walls. Gallery designs add statements and can balance rooms in creative ways.

Garden’s roots first planted almost 40 yrs ago Karen Burke returns to property first purchased in 1981 and transforms backyard into ‘a really neat place’ This is the second in a series proudly highlighting some of Abbotsford’s most amazing backyard gardens.

Karen Burke’s garden has truly been a labour of love.The roots of the project go back almost four decades, when Karen and her husband Michael had their house built in 1981 on a former farm property in Abbotsford.

But the garden as it is now didn’t develop until this decade. The couple sold that home and lived in three others before returning in 2010.It was then that they decided to turn the backyard into what they really wanted – “a really neat space,” Karen says.

They hired Timmermans Landscaping and collaborated on what should be done with the sloped area, which was mainly just grass with a large Douglas fir – planted in 1981 – taking centre stage.“I wanted something I could play with and change and dig up and just do what gardeners do –

they move plants around instead of furniture,” laughs Karen, whose love of gardening was inherited from her grandmother.The result was a tiered garden featuring plenty of greenery surrounded by vibrant pops of floral colour.This year, Karen is particularly enjoying the peonies that blossom every June, when she normally isn’t able to enjoy them because she’s away on vacation.She also loves the dahlias that she plants every year throughout the garden, and often shares those and the peonies with friends.
