No smoking permitted in any RDN park or trail The Regional District of Nanaimo is closing trails within its jurisdictions effective July 18 due to high risk of fire. This closure affects the RDN’s Arrowsmith CPR Regional Trail that runs from Cameron Lake up to the old Arrowsmith ski hill. Hikers looking to climb Mount Arrowsmith and Mount Cokely are advised that the private logging roads providing access to the back country are being closed by the landowner. Keep apprised of access to private forest lands by following the Island Timberlands blog at blog.islandtimberlands.com. The closure is in conjunction with the BC Wildfire Service’s open burning ban within the Coastal Fire Centre region. The RDN also established a campfire ban at both Horne Lake Regional Park and Descanso Bay Regional Park campgrounds. Outside of the two designated RDN campgrounds, fires of any kind are always prohibited in RDN regional and community parks and trails. Use of CSA or ULC approved propane cooking stoves, barbeques and portable fire pits is still allowed at the campgrounds. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cell. In addition, there is no smoking permitted at this time in any RDN park or trail. The District 69 Recreation Commission has decided to get the regional district to start working on three top priority items now rather than wait after the October municipal elections. The commission at its special summer meeting held July 19 at Oceanside Place
voted to recommend to the Regional District of Nanaimo board to direct staff to begin the process of looking into the minimum Ravensong pool upgrade proposal to address critical user concerns, the replacement of the old track at Ballenas Secondary School to a rubberized track and field faculty, and the search for a suitable land for a future outdoor and indoor sports facility.

STARTING POINT Day in the Life of Parksville On Thursday July 26, the City of Parksville and surrounding areas will be photographed as part of the popular and award-winning “A Day in the Life of ” series, which started as a nationwide project in 1984. On June 8, 1984 in a 24-hour period, 100,000 photographs were shot and then published in book, “A day in the life of Canada.” Since that time, hundreds of communities across Canada have been profiled using this popular photo essay format. This pull-out section is sponsored by the Parksville & District Chamber of Commerce and contains selected images from the photographers who took part in documenting the day. Photographers taking part are: Randy Hall, Linda Matteson, Brian Argyle, Lissa Alexander, Lauren Collins, Adam Kveton, Michael Briones and Peter McCully. The best photos captured that day will be published in print, while all photos will be published online as a Facebook album at Facebook. com/PQBNews. Publication is expected at the end of August. This will be the third time the PQB News has featured Parksville and area, previously Qualicum Beach had been featured twice. The first time in 2011 was in celebration of TOSH 100th anniversary and in 2012 in celebration of the Town of Qualicum Beach’s 75th anniversary. Though originally interested in entering it in the Parksville Canada Day parade, Price said she thought her car could much improve NIC’s parade entry, and it did. NIC won the Best Decorated Car category, with some of the prize going towards a credit on her tuition, said Price. Not bad for her first parade. Price said she hopes to enter it in the Parksville parade next year.
The Town of Qualicum Beach embarked on a pilot project last year that required tracking devices to be installed on some of the municipalities vehicles. This was initiated in 2017. GPS devices were installed in 14 of the town-owned vehicles with the intention of improving staff’s understanding of the how the town utilizes its fleet of vehicles. Town CAO Daniel Sailland reported to council at its regular meeting on July 16, that the pilot project was undertaken for 12 months and during that period data was collected. Throughout the time, tracking devicers were installed in two backhoes, one Vactor truck, one roadside mower, one Volt, five snow removal trucks, two garbage trucks and two general maintenance vehicles. The pilot project cost the town $3,030 for installation and $5,535 for the system for a total of $8,565. Sailland said prior to the pilot project, very little was known about fleet operations and after 12 months they have started to acquire better knowledge based on the information they have collected. The objective of the project was to find route efficiencies for vehicles that have predefined

routes like garbage trucks; review maintenance considerations and impacts; make driver behaviour adjustments and recommendation; address safety and security applications; inform future fleet purchase implications; and improve customer service. Sailland said while they have collected valuable information on a cross section of equipment, they only have a small portion of the larger picture. He pointed out that over 50 per cent of the town’s fleet comprised of Ford F series trucks but had only one representative vehicle in the pilot project. As well, one of the graphs in the report highlighted potential savings from just a few pieces of heavy equipment of over $1,000 per month. To have a full view of the town fleet’s operations, Sailland recommended to council that all vehicles be installed with GPS tracking devices to identify the patterns and significant cost efficiencies that the town can implement. It will cost $8,000 to have all the town’s fleet equipped with tracking devices and $15,000 for the system. Sailland said staff is confident that annual savings will be identified in introducing GPS to the entire fleet and it will outweigh the costs. Council approved the recommendaiton to install tracking devices on the entire town’s movable assets.

They realized the need to address some of the pressing recreational and sporting needs of the community now. “I thought it was a smart idea to say ‘Hey, we don’t have to do everything at once and let’s get the essentials done,’” said McVey. “We hear other people talking about doing it after the elections… February. It’s not good enough. We’ve got to get going. There’s no reason why staff can’t be working on some of the basic pricing and stuff right now.” Jane Waite, head coach of Oceanside Track and Field Club, appeared as a delegation to the commission and touched on why an upgraded rubberized surface is a good investment, the pros and cons of a cinder track versus a rubberized track, what the minimum and maximum cost wold be and also a funding formula using recent track surfacing company

at annmcvey@shaw.ca. “These are very tough issues but they are very, very important with our community growing so rapidly right now, is to have these things developing” said McVey. “With all the people coming to the area, they would want to have these facilities. It is important to their families, to their style of life. If we don’t have them, we are going to lose out.” The commission has also made it a priority to find land around 20 acres in size where an outdoor and indoor facility can be built. There’s not a lot of open land available in the area but Electoral Area F commissioner Reg Noseworthy said it would be prudent for the RDN to start looking now.

There was a range of kites to check out at the event at Parksville Community Park, including a giant dog that attracted attention. Members of the B.C. Kitefliers Association put on demonstrations of kite flying, showing the agility of their kites and the acrobatic possibilities of kiteflying. The festival continued Sunday, July 22. Bowser residents who are against the marine outfall option of the Bowser Sewer Project plan to show up in big numbers at the Regional District of Nanaimo board meeting on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to protest third reading of the rezoning of two properties located in Electoral Area H to permit a wastewater treatment plant to be developed in the area. The Stop Bowser Ocean Sewage group is encouraging people who oppose the rezoning to attend the meeting to demonstrate their opposition and make it known to other
directors prior to voting on the amendment bylaw. The properties to be rezoned are located on Pitt Road and Shaughnessy Drive. The group’s campaign director Thomas Gates, in his mass email sent to residents and members, stated that they should fill the chamber rows from the front to the back with people carrying signs as they are no longer allowed to send further correspondence or appear as a delegation. The deadline to comment was at the public hearing that was held at the Lighthouse Community Centre on July 9, where more than 200 people attended with majority of the residents who attended speaking against
the marine outfall and the proposed rezoning. “It is ludicrous that after the July 9th Lighthouse Center hearing that the RDN staff say it is recommended that ‘Regional District of Nanaimo Land Use and Subdivision Amendment Bylaw No. 500.420, 2018’ be considered for third reading,” Gates said. “This is a direct insult to 99 per cent of the 210 people who attended, 99 per cent of 159 people who provided written opposition statements, and 99 per cent of the over 100 people who spoke-out against this boondoggle at the hearing. Consultation has failed.”

B.C. gov’t protects Coastal Douglas firs The B.C. government is protecting more Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem land from logging near Bowser, Qualicum Beach, Nanoose Bay and elsewhere on the coast. That makes the total of Costal Douglas-fir ecosystem now protected from logging to more than 11,000 hectares, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural resource Operations and Rural Development made Friday, July 20. Scott Fraser, Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, and MLA for Mid Island Pacific Rim, said in a news release that the Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem is rare and not much of it is on public land. “I’m glad that our government has protected more of this precious ecosystem for conservation. Many endangered plant species grow within these newly protected lands, and it’s good to know they will flourish in the future. Fraser added that both the SnawNaw-As and Qualicum first nations were consulted. In the announcement, the ministry explains that, “The Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem is ranked both globally and provincially as a

high priority for preservation, and is home to many endangered plant communities. “Of the global range of Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystems, 80 per cent occur in the southern Strait of Georgia area,” reads the announcement. Of the ecosystem found in B.C., nine per cent is provincially owned. The new protection for the additional land comes after consultation with 19 First Nations on the proposal, and the proposal was advertised for public review and comment from Nov. 2017 to Jan. 2018, said the ministry. Out of the more than 1,078 submissions received, 98 per cent were supportive of the proposal. “The protection has legal authority by way of amendment to the Coastal Douglas-fir Order under the Land Act. Under the Coastal Douglas-fir land-use order, the protected lands are managed for enhanced stewardship and conservation,” reads the release. Other areas that see increased protection for Coastal Douglas-fir ecosystem from this announcement are Cedar on Vancouver Island, and on Galiano and Salt Spring islands. — News staff B.C. Government

Parskville residents are being asked to complete a survey that will help develop a new comprehensive Parks, Trails and Open Spaces Master Plan. The City of Parksville has teamed up with Vancouver Island University, Master of Community Planning Program and Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute in creating the plan. Engaging residents about their vision and priorities for parks and open spaces within the city is one of the key elements of the project. A survey has now been posted on the home page of the city website (www.parksville.ca) with a series of questions to assist Parksville and the VIU team to identify goals and pri-
orities for the future of parks, trails and open spaces and also guide the development of the Parks, Trails and Open Spaces Master Plan. City staff is hoping to learn what it is about these spaces residents enjoy, what might be missing and also what changes residents wish to see in the future. The survey should take about 10 minutes to complete and will be open from July 17 until Aug. 10. Survey responses are anonymous and staff is requesting just one response per person only. Student-led open houses will be held in the atrium, Parksville Civic and Technology Centre on Wednesday, July 25, 3-6 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 31, 2-4 p.m.
The purpose of the open houses is to assist residents with the survey and answer questions about this project. A large-scale map of city parks, trails and open spaces will be available to help anyone wishing to complete a paper copy of the survey. At the Wednesday, July 25 open house, VIU students will present the consultation data completed to date and engage with residents to refine recommendations for the parks, trails and open spaces network. The Regional District of Nanaimo is always looking for new innovations and other sustainanable approaches to improve the transit system. The regional district is doing this in partnership with BC Transit. Superintendent of fleet and transit Brandon Miller stated in his report to the Transit Select Committee at its meeting on July 12, that they are currently examining right-sizing of the fleet, electric buses, and three-position bike racks. Currently, the RDN fleet has 50 new flyer, 40-foot, compressed natural gas heavy-duty buses and 18 ARBOC, 30’ diesel light-duty buses. The majority of the conventional transit routes in the RDN are being serviced by heavy-duty buses, and all of the custom transit (handyDART) routes are being serviced by light-duty buses. The real-time technology and
automatic passenger counters that were installed on the RDN fleet last May, aims to capture and analyze passenger boardings and alightings. The data collected will be applied by staff to make better informed future decisions on fleet size, routing, run-times, and bus stop locations. BC Transit began developing an electric bus trial program which consists of five phases. They are preparation, discovery, testing service, revenue service, and report. From the trial, BC Transit aims to learn about the state of e-bus technology, range of buse and time required to charge the bus, required infrastructure and operational implications. Since the RDN’s fleet is in year three of its current CNG investment cycle, exploring electric buses now will put the regional district in a good position because it still has ten years to go before they replace the buses, according to the re-
port. The RDN is hoping that if the technology meets the standards, the regional district would be in a favourable position to transition to electric buses. Another improvement BC Transit and the regional district are currently reviewing is 3-position bike rack. At present, the RDN uses two-position bike rack on conventional fleet. The evaluation for an additional space for a third bike was initiated earlier this year and a report is expected at the end of July, 2018. Staff assessment of the three-position bike rack includes ensuring it does not contravene the BC Motor Act or the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard. If the results of the evaluation proves to be positive and there are no safety issues, RDN Transit could install a 3-bike rack with the to be shared with BC Transit.

Investment brokerage Edward Jones Parksville is working to feed the community twice-over with a series of free barbecues this summer. The company has planned three free events, with one barbecue having already taken place in June at Nicholls Park, where the company also collected donations of money and food for the Parksville Food Bank. So far, a pile of food and $90 has been raised after 24 families attended, said Tom Kinred with Edward Jones Parksville, but added that he hopes to reach $1,500 in addition to even more food collected with help from individuals as well as from other businesses.
The next free barbecue is taking place Saturday, July 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Foster Park (at the corner of Sanderson Road and Pym Street). Kinred said he’ll be spending a good chunk of this week (starting July 23) leaving door hangers at hundreds of homes in the Foster Park area letting them know about the event. Kinred said the company is planning its third free barbecue for Aug. 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lowrys Road and Yellowbrick Road. For that barbecue, attendees as asked to park at the Oceanside Elementary School overflow parking at Wembley and Lowrys roads. This is the first time Edward Jones Parksville is organizing these kind of events, and Kinred said that, if they barbecues are successful enough, he hopes to make them an annual fundraiser.

Never too young, Never too old The BC Summer Games recently held in Cowichan saw close to 2,500 of the province’s young athletes competing with the average age of participants being 14 years old. It was great to see the athletes excel in different sports disciplines. The young atheletes are the future and some of them may eventually become elite athletes and represent Canada in world and Olympic events. They competed for medals, but the true value of their involvement was establishing a culture of being active. There are studies that have concluded that children and young adults who are in sports or exercise regularly are likely to seek physical activity and fitness all through their lives. The chances of them staying physically active and healthy are greater even when they reach their senior years. One only needs to look at the seniors in Parksville Qualicum Beach as a clear example of this. The region has been called the seniors’ capital of Canada, but it can easily brag about having the most physically active seniors in the country thanks to groups such as the Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association, which has more than a thousand senior members, whose average age is 75. PGOSA just celebrated its 25th anniversary, a milestone lauded by Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell, and Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre who declared July 20 as PGOSA Day in Parksville. Most of the organizations members love sports and have played one or more types of sports during their youth. PGOSA has provided them a means to continue to be active by organizing a myriad of sports, recreation and social activities. The group has become a shining example for seniors to continue being physically active, regardless of age and abilities. — Parksville Qualicum Beach News

LETTERS MUST SECURE ENTIRE FOOD CHAIN TO HELP THE ORCAS
Robert Tritschler nailed it on the head in his letter dated July 19, 2018 (Herring needed to feed orcas). It should not take a genius at DFO to figure out that in order for the orca population to succeed and flourish, they need to make sure the entire food chain is secure all the way down to the food that herring feed on. The chinook population only come down the inside because there has been feed here for them in the past few years. I am curious to see what they will do with the salmon farms. STILL AWAITING A RESPONSE FROM THE DFO As a wildlife photographer I end up in many places to capture some of what nature has to offer. This spring, I personally witnessed a disturbing situation. A pod of orcas were feeding directly in front of my position. Although they were some distance away, I could clearly watch the pod through my professional equipment. A short time later a commercial fish boat came upon the pod, slowed to view their feeding and continued to make its way past. Although its position was close, I felt that the whales were not put under undue stress. One crewmen did go to the bow to takes photos once it was discovered that the boat was quite near a pod. The second time the fishing boat approached the whales and steered into the pod. The skipper at this point is moving the boat so that they could get close for the benefit of the photographer. Then the skipper actually maneuvered his boat to port (left turn) to follow two whales for a close-up again. You could see that the pod was now scattering due to some of his intrusive behavior. It is common knowledge that the DFO wants the general public to report any such action, so a detailed report was presented to them by email.

SAYING THANK-YOU AFTER A TIME OF NEED There are no flowers or cards of thanks that can express how deeply grateful my husband and I are for the outpouring of concern, help, kindness and yes, even love, that our neighbours in our little corner of Fairwinds (Renwick Place and Rockhampton Road) gave us when my husband suffered a heart attack on the morning of June 12. As if by magic, while waiting for the ambulance, our very dear neighbours answered our call for help, rushing in to tend to our very worried and confused dog, contacting another good neighbour and friend who was willing to look after him at a moment’s notice, watering the garden, securing the house and offering us so much kindness we are overwhelmed with gratitude. As well, thank you to Jean and Lyn at the Nanoose Library and cashier Brenda at Thrifty’s Parksville who also offered so much care and support and a wee bit of humour too to lighten our load. APPRECIATION FOR FIRST RESPONDERS It is a stifling hot, breezeless day… no relief and not a cloud in sight. Most of us employ our air conditioning or a fan to try and escape the summer heat. Another day is one of heavy autumn rain. Windshield wipers work overtime while we

struggle to peer at the wet and slick roads. And then comes winter, probably the most challenging of seasons on the road. Ice. Snow. Sleet. Reduced traction. Just what do all these seasons have in common? No matter what the weather or conditions, emergency personnel are there for us in our darkest moments. They serve our communities in places most of us try our best not to go to or in, situations we try to avoid, accidents, violence, fires… all manner of unenviable, life-threatening and frightening events. They comfort us, treat us, transport us and offer compassion, skill and professionalism. They are a rare breed dedicated to two things: alleviating suffering and doing no harm. And so I write this letter with the hope it will bring them some of the respect, funding and appreciation they deserve. A Qualicum Beach artist is showing work again after a hiatus from painting, and has a new focus with her first floral series. Birgit Coath, a Signature artist with the Federation of Canadian Artists, is exploring new territory for her work, having told herself for years that she’d never do floral art. “I’m not a flowery person,” she said with a laugh. “I’m a tomboy.” Though her work had focused on people, architectural details and some land-
scapes, she said a challenge from her teacher and coach Donna Zhang had her discovering that perhaps she’d been wrong about petaled plants. “She was teaching us colour mixing, and she (Zhang) assigned me a floral and I put it on my drafting board… and I started seeing the patterns and the uniqueness in there. I thought, this is really something…. I love architecture, (and) they have a structure and depth… I thought, I like this.” Back at painting for about a year, Coath has certainly taken that new interest to heart with her floral series done in oil now showing at The Gallery at Qualicum Art Supply (206 First Ave. West, Qualicum Beach), as well as the colour-mixing, with Coath using a variety of Continued on A15

A roots-rockin’ scientist with a PhD and an album named Bandit Queen is headed to Parksville and Lasqueti Island July 26 and 27 for a pair of performances. Hamilton, Ont.-based musician Sarah Beatty is on a North America tour with guitarist Peter Horvat to spread some upbeat,
rootsy tunes telling the tale of one bank-robbing, horse-theiving woman and other ladies of interest, and even a few songs based on science. A musician since childhood, Beatty said she’s always been compelled to make noise, but also discovered an interest in maps early on in life. “My parents lived in different places, so I spent a lot of time in the car travelling,” said Beatty. “I ended up looking at the map a lot… learning about the places and where I was travelling to and from.” She pursued her interest in maps after high school, and, many years later, finished with a PhD in environmental science from McMaster University and lots of knowledge about water-re-
pellent soils in post-wildfire environments. Though the studies meant slowing down her musical performances to only about 50 shows a year, Beatty said her focus on science grew her songwriting abilities. “I guess when you start to become fascinated by something and want to learn more about it, you also start to develop insights into it, and that’s sort of the essence of creativity in a lot of ways,” Beatty said. Composition is very important, she said, as she tries to take a small but beautiful aspect of something and fill her paintings with it. What results are paintings with a kind of fantasy feel, as if a pixie or a dragon may be lurking just outside the frame. Coath said her early work did, in fact, sometimes feature such fantastical creatures. But the essence of her artistic work is to accurately express what she sees in her mind, she said. A creative person from the start, Coath spent years doing drafting and garden design before getting into art. She said an injury made her business work difficult, but kicked her creativity into overdrive. “About 10 years ago I had

It filled in the spaces.” She got into painting after taking classes with an artist who had lost her teeange son. “She became very expressive in her artwork… and she
started sharing that with others, and rather than learning how to do technical work, we learned to do just really expressive work, like expressing whatever’s inside,” said Coath. Coath said she still has that first painting she did, and still finds it valid, but said her efforts since then have been to develop her technical skills

of the world that’s inside of you, and figuring out how things work and what kind of insight you can gain in that environment and being able to share it with other people.” When it comes to balancing her scientific activities with her musical ones, Beatty said the scales may have tipped in the musical direction since finishing school in 2016. Still, she finds ways of working science into her music in an effort to give people a stronger connection with the science happening around them. As far as writing songs like Prehistoric Sludge (one of the songs on her
2017 album Bandit Queen), Beatty said it helps to write about what you know. But the focus of the album is more on non-typical stories of women, starting with Bell Starr. “She was a really fascinating lady because she was educated at a time where very few women were educated and she became a bank robber and ultimately a horse thief, and I was just super, super fascinated by her,” said Beatty. “So I wrote this song very quickly, and that became the hub of the songs that came after it.” Those included songs on female religious figures, a lady trucker and others. “(The album) is about women calling
their own shots in some way and being strong and being vulnerable and being flawed and being really skilled in different ways, and being clever and curious and being all those things that women are, but they don’t necessarily get the bandwidth in different narratives,” said Beatty. “It’s fun tunes that people can laugh to and sing along with,” she added. Beatty will be performing at Parksville Community Park on July 26 at 11 a.m. at the gazebo, and July 27 at the Lasquetti Island Pub at 8 p.m. Both shows are free, she said. A motorsports-themed café has just opened in Parksville. And there are NoXcuses why you shouldn’t go and try it out. NoXcuses Motorsports, which opened on July 17, is located on 1-464 Island Highway East. It features freshly brewed coffee using 49th Parallel beans and it also offers rentals of exotic vehicles and motorcycles for a day. It’s an unusual concept that owners Jordan and Cora Garraway have been dreaming of in the last 20 years since they gave up their coffee shop in Alberta and took on regular jobs as they had three small children at the time. They moved to Nanaimo 10 years ago and now with their children old enough and working, they decided to pursue their dream of opening a coffee shop. They weren’t able to find a suitable place in Nanaimo and when they found this location in Parksville, Cora said they went

And that’s also how they got the name for their unusual business venture. “We have looked at different business ideas along the coffee/ café idea and it was Jordan that came up with it,” Cora explained. “It just kind of became fitting when we decided we were actually ready to do this… no more excuses, it was time to go for it. That’s how our business got its
name.” “It was hard to find a place,” said Cora. “We looked all over in Nanaimo and in Coombs but we couldn’t find a place that could accommodate both. When we found this place we were excited to have the garage bay doors and it had everything we kind of wanted. It’s a fabulous location. It was like it was it was meant to be.” The Garraways have a love of
classic cars and also a passion for riding motorcycles. They want to establish a place where people can stop and meet. “There’s just not a lot of great places,” said Cora. “We just wanted a place that we’d like to go and hangout. It’s just a bit of all of our passion mixed in together. We really love good coffee and we knew we wanted to give people something like that.” The Garraways decided to add vehicle and motorbike rentals for a day to the mix as well as a retail shop and also a VIP room they called the “Crash Pad” that they would rent out to people and groups for meetings or get togethers. “We’ve been told all along that we are kind of crazy,” said Jordan. “A lot of people didn’t get the concept. They kind of thought, there is just no way you can fragment a business this many ways but our business views were exactly the opposite. We need multiple reasons for
people to come. You might come in today just for regular coffee and maybe next time it entices you to try something new, maybe a lunch, for entertainment, to go buy a t-shirt and eventually go rent a car for a day.” Jordan, Cora and their three children — Kaeden, 18, Jaia, 16 and Maitlin, 14 — are all helping with the business, making it a family-run operation. But Jordan said, they will be hiring people down the road. The vehicles for rent at NoXcuses include a limo-like classic car that could be rented for weddings, anniversaries, graduations or for touring around the Island. The two convertibles are 2001 BMW Z3, which is an automatic, and a rare manual 1996 Fiat Parchetta, which is one of only 12 in existence in Canada. The two motorcycles for rent for a day are a 2012 Triumph Bonneville and a 1999 Kawasaki Drifter, created in the classic style lines of the 1940s Indian Chief.

CRANE, Betty Of Nanaimo, BC, passed away on July 17, 2018 at the age of 87 years. Born in Vancouver on February 21, 1931. Predeceased by her loving husband, Norman, of 60 years. Survived by her sons, David of Port Coquitlam, Nick of Mission, Lawrie of Nanaimo, and daughter, Sandra of Vancouver. Grandchildren, Kim, Jodi, Jason, Nicholas, Jordan, Christopher, Daniel, MacKenzie and Alayna. Great-Granddaughter, Crystal. Devoted Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother. Her memory will be cherished in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched. Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy.
A long life filled with love and caring was rewarded on July 11, 2018 with a peaceful transition to a well deserved rest. Born and raised in Deloraine MB, Beryl lived in MB and AB, before finally settling in Victoria BC in 1966. Guided by her faith our mother, gramma, nanna gave selflessly of herself to family, friends and the less fortunate and her beautiful smile was sure to brighten even the darkest day. Mom loved all animals but there was always a special place in her heart for her beloved dogs. Life’s many challenges were met and conquered with a quiet determination and the early lessons of thrift and hard work were evident in every part of her life. Mom loved music, dancing and entertaining and there was always a full house at any of her frequent dinner or costume parties. Always active, walking was her passion and a perfect day had to include a walk along Victoria’s Inner Harbor and the Odgen Point Breakwater. Our mother will be missed by all who knew her, but her next journey awaits and after a brief rest she will leave surrounded by family, friends, music, love and laughter and some very very happy dogs. By request there will be no service and in lieu of flowers a donation to a local animal shelter would be appreciated. A heartfelt Thank you for the love and care provided by the third floor staff at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach.

DECEMBER 7, 1929 – JULY 11, 2018 It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Marion Doak. Marion is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Bruce; children, Ronald Doak, Gordon Doak, and Gaylene Doak; six grandchildren, Richard Turcotte, Ryan Doak, Ashley Minifie, Kyle Moore, Kelsey Moore, and Nolan; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Julia, William, and Karson; sisters, Ellen Eddy, Ruth Whatley, and her twin sister, Mabel Bouchard. Marion was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah; one brother; one sister; and her parents. Mom left home at 18 and moved to Vancouver to work. Here she met the love of her life, Bruce. Bruce was in the Army and they travelled the world together while raising a family. Along the way they met many wonderful people and visited many interesting sites. Upon returning to Canada, Marion went to work. In 1973 she moved to Victoria. She retired from her job at the age 60 and moved to Parksville. In her retirement she took up golfing. She and Bruce continued to golf until her illness took over and she wasn’t able to golf anymore. Her home became her new hobby until she wasn’t able to do that anymore. Mom passed on July 11, 2018 at 12:20am. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at Yates Memorial Services, 1000 Allsbrook Rd, Parksville, BC. Betty Louise Reeves (Vogt) August 12, 1935 - July 16, 2018
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our cherished Mother in White Rock, BC. The world has lost a beautiful soul. Betty was born in Marienthal, Ukraine in 1935 and emigrated to Canada in 1948 with her mother and brother John. After attending school in Langley she obtained a license in Hairdressing and this lead to a 54 year career that she absolutely loved. Betty’s heart had no limits, she loved so many people and it was always returned. Her greatest virtues were kindness, generosity, patience, resiliency and honesty. There was never a job too big or a problem too tough to tackle. Mom was a great role model for anyone who came to this country to make a better life. She was a very proud Canadian. Betty was an avid fisherwoman, a budding artist, and an exceptional gardener. She was also a skilled seamstress. She was always up for trying new things-even trying downhill skiing at the age of 40. Betty could feed an army at the drop of a hat. Betty and Alf moved to Parksville, BC in the early 90’s and spent 20 years there enjoying the Island life with many new friends. Betty was predeceased by her husband Alf in 2016. She leaves behind her children, Rick, Susan (Jake), David (Wanda), Greg, (Yamileth), Frank, Kathy (Neil) 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her brother John (Irene) and Mary. A special thank you to Evergreen Campus of Care for their exemplary care for Mom and for helping us navigate through her long battle with dementia. A special thank you to Cindy. Equestrian vaulters heading to world games West Coast Vaulters team to host a Wine and Cheese Demo fundraiser on July 28 MICHAEL BRIONES michael.briones@pqbnews.com
Equestrian vaulters from Parksville Qualicum are heading to the World Equestrian Games in North Carolina in September. Jessica Bentzen from Parksville and Alex Ballance from Qualicum Beach will be representing Canada at the games to be held in Tryon, North Carolina from Sept. 11-23. They are members of the West Coast Vaulters, whose athletes hail from British Columbia and Alberta. Equestrian vaulting is a combination of gymnastics, acrobatics and dance on the back of a moving horse. It is one of eight equestrian disciplines that include show jumping, dressage and para-equestrian dressage, driving, endurance and reining. The 26-year-old Bentzen, who is one of the top three individual vaulters in Canada and is one of the founding members of West Coast Vaulters, has been competing for 18 years and has represented Canada at the World Championships in 2016. In North Carolina, Bentzen has qualified to compete in both the individual and team events. Ballance, 21, is an 11-year veteran of the sport. She has also experienced world championship competition in 2016 as part of the West Coast Vaulters squad and also won a championship title at nationals in 2017. She will be competing in
the team events at the World Equestrian Games this September. The other members of the West Coast Vaulters that will head to North Carolina include Kate Thomas, 20, of Lantzville, Korynn Weber, 20, of Nelson, Alisa Schmidt, 32, of Chilliwack, and Jaydee Fluet, 10, of Sundre, Alta. Coach Debbie Bentzen said they are excited to be heading at the games, which is expected to draw over 40,000 to 50,000 spectators each day. However, the team is now trying to raise funds to help pay for the cost to travel to North Carolina. They will be driving to the venue in the United State and it will include towing their competition horses Kingston, Azreal and Hugo. The West Coast Vaulters is hosting a Wine and Cheese Demo at Arbutus Meadows from 12 to 3 p.m. on July 28. The team heading to the World Equestrian Games will be performing their routines. There will also be a silent auction. Bentzen said this is the only opportunity for anyone to see the whole team in action. Tickets are $30 each and kids under 12 is free. The Parksville Golden Oldies Sports Association just turned 25 years old. The sports and recreation group that started out as a hockey organization in 1993 celebrated its quarter-of-a-century anniversary at its annual summer picnic that was held at the Community Park in Parksville last Friday. The celebration was attended by Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre and Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell as well the Parksville RCMP officer in charge of community policing, Cpl. Jesse Foreman. Lefebvre made the announcement that July 20 is now “PGOSA Day in Parksville.” “What you do in the community is
fantastic and now that I am retiring I probably will join PGOSA,” said Lefebvre, who announced recently that he is not running for another term in office in the upcoming municipal elections. Stilwell said she’s always advocated for PGOSA to newcomers to the area, raving about how great this group is in fostering sports, healthy recreational and social activities. “Twenty-five years is a big event to make it that long to have a group who is so committed to healthy, active living, ” Stilwell told members of PGOSA. “I commend you all. Maybe in 11 years, when I am 55 I’d be able to join you all. How’s that?” The celebration featured a lunch, performances by Rainbow Stew Cloggers,
belly dancing and a variety of games. PGOSA vice-president Jim Powell said when the group started in 1993, no one expected it to grow to become one of the most active senior organizations on Vancouver Island and across Canada. “We’re about 1,300 members by the end of the year and we usually have about eight to 10 physical activities that members can participate in,” said Powell. PGOSA also offers not only sporting activities but also social events. The average age of their members is around 75 years old. “We have quite a number of activities people can be involved in and it really fits our community well and I believe that’s why it’s growing so fast,” said Powell.

Fergusons earn gold at National weightlifting competitions Brenda and Ed Ferguson are local seniors who simply love lifting heavy weights. Brenda is 75 years old and Ed is 83 years old. They still compete in weightlifting and recently both earned gold medals at the Canadian/Pan Am Masters Weightlifting Championships that was held in Gaspe, Que. recently. Ed went six-for-six on his lifts. He snatched 35 kg and clean and jerked 46 kg to win the gold medal in the men over 80, 85-kg body weight category. He took top honours in the Canadian Masters and also in the Pan Am section of the competition. Brenda also took home Canadian and Pan Am gold medals after completing all three snatch lifts for a best of 25 kg, and clean and jerked 33 kg to win the women 75-79, in the 75-kg body weight category. She also won a silver medal as a member of the Western team in the team competition. The next challenge for both is the World Masters Weightlifting Championships to be held in Montreal in 2019. Ed, who has a weightlifting class at Limitless Gym in Parksville, will attempt to beat Canadian records for the snatch and clean and jerk that he set at the age of 80. North Island Royals finish strong The Bantam AA North Island Royals baseball team, which recently concluded its regular season play, ended this year’s campaign by sealing up a trip to the provincials next month. The team racked up a strong 15-5 record to finish in a solid first place among the Vancouver Island AA bantam division. A combination of good pitching, patience at the plate, timely hits and strong team defence led to most of the Royals’ wins. The North Island Royals are compromised of a dozen 13- to 15-yearolds from Nanaimo to Campbell River. Six of the players are local. They are a young team, with most of the players being first years in the bantam division. Taking first place in the league has earned the team a berth to the upcoming provincial championships. The provincials will take place in Ladner from Aug. 1 to 4.

Lochlan leads locals with six gold at BC Games

Lochlan Rogers of Qualicum Beach made a huge splash at the BC Summer Games. The member of the Ravensong Breakers swim club collected six gold medals after finishing first in the boys 50m, 100m and 200 freestyle. and also in the 20-m individual medley. The 13-year-old’s fifth and sixth gold medals were with the Vancouver island-Central Coast Zone 6 team in the 4 x 50-m freestyle relay and in the 4 x 50-m medley relay. He came in fourth in the 200-m breaststroke and was sixth in the 100-m breaststroke. Head coach of the Ravensong Breakers, Byron Trajan, praised Rogers’ multiple gold achievements at the games that had close to 2,500 athletes from across British Columbia competing against each other in various sports discipline. “Lochlan had some really good swims,” said Trajan. “While I’m always impressed with his performances, I’m not suprised he did well. He and his teammates are having fun, working hard, constantly improving their technique and doing dryland and cross training outside the pool. It’s fun coaching such a great group of kids who embrace an active and healthy lifestyle.” The 2018 BC Games closed down with Vancouver Island-Coast Zone 6 emerging the overall champions of the sporting extravaganza. Parksville Qualicum Beach and area athletes such as Rogers contributed to the success of Zone 6. Special Olympian Clara Kodweiss of Qualicum Beach took home two gold medals in 100-m individual medley and 200-m freestyle and had two silver medal finishes in the 100-m backstroke and 50-m butterfly. Another Qualicum Beach Special Olympian, Shayne Blandin of Qualicum Beach won four medals. She landed a silver in the Special Olympics female 50-m freestyle and garnered three bronze medals in the100-m backstroke, 100-m freestyle and 50-m butterfly. In a different kind of water sports, Nanoose Bay’s Maxwell Jeffery was a double gold medalists when he finished first in both the boys 10-3 wakeboarding and wakeskate competitions. He also finished fifth in the slalom. Jamieson Brenden of Parksville collected a gold medal with the Vancouver island-Central Coast Zone 6 lacrosse team. Pascha Nemlander both won a silver medal with the Vancouver island-Central Coast Zone 6 team that consisted of swimmers from Victoria, Nanaimo, and Duncan. In equestrian, Gracie O’Connell of Parksville helped the Vancouver island-Central Coast Zone 6 equestrian team land a silver medal and she also won a bronze in the boys/girls jumper day 2. She placed fifth in jumper day 3, and was sixth in jumper day 1. In athletics, Luke Hubner of Qualicum Beach won a bronze medal in the boys F1 Triathlon, but just missed winning two more bronzes when he placed fourth in the duathlon and in the super sprint triathlon. He also finished seventh in the aquathlon. Samuel Morrison of Nanoose Bay came close to winning a bronze when finished fourth in the boys 1,500-m race walk. He was 18th in the boys discus. Other District 69 medalists include Joshua Jeffers of Nanoose Bay who won a silver in the sailing competition. Mathew Grimes of Qualicum Beach and Gavin Knight of Parksville won a silver with the Vancouver island-Central Coast Zone 6 golf team team. Knight finished sixth in the boys final while Grimes ended up in ninth place. Swimmer Veronica Hall of Parksville finished fifth in the girls 200-m butterfly, 8th in the 800-m freestyle, 12th in the 400-m individual medley, 17th in the 100-m butterfly and 28th in the 100-m freestyle. Cassidy Kellow played with the Vancouver island-Central Coast Zone 6 softball team that finished sixth overall.
