Clean technology is constantly improving and providing more environmentally-conscious options for those looking to scale back on emissions and say goodbye to the pump.

In the twenty-first century, almost everyone can agree that BY BLAIR QUALEY motivating drivers to replace their older, higher polluting cars with more fuel-efficient vehicles with fewer or no emissions will only benefit the environment, but the biggest question is how to go about doing so. At one end of the debate are those who believe in creating penalties for automotive manufacturers whose sales of electric vehicles (EVs) don’t meet an arbitrary percentage of their overall car and truck sales. At the other end of the spectrum are those who believe that better education for consumers and dealerships coupled with incentives provided by the government is a more effective strategy. Advocates of Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandates would argue that such policies would encourage manufacturers to develop more EVs, but as we saw in California’s case, these policies still won’t compel consumers to purchase EVs. Even with a ZEV mandate in place, California’s EV adoption per capita is relatively on par with B.C.’s. Furthermore, in a region where affordability is already a significant issue, government ZEV mandates will only serve to drive up the cost of all automotive products along with other unintended consequences. In British Columbia, we’ve seen significant success with

existing incentive programs like the BC SCRAP-IT® Program and CEVforBCTM, which both have provided millions of dollars in savings for BC consumers on the purchase of eligible clean energy vehicles. Since 1996, the BC SCRAP-IT® Program has been working to take high polluting vehicles off the roads and replacing them with cleaner transportation options, including offering an EV incentive for up to $6,000 off the purchase of a new EV. As of June 2018, BC SCRAP-IT® was responsible for scrapping over 44,000 high polluting vehicles and recycling them in the proper fashion. The CEVforBCTM is another program that has provided significant incentives for British Columbians looking to drive green, providing up to $5,000 on a qualifying vehicle. During 2017 alone, the program saw almost 1,800 applications, a 20 per cent increase over 2016. More remarkable is the fact that during the month of June 2018, more than 1,000 applications were submitted – a number that is unprecedented in history of the program. The transition to cleaner energy vehicles is a gradual one, and one that requires a shift in consumer mindset, in conjunction with government policy. Even with incentive programs in place, EVs still represent a fraction of overall vehicle sales in Canada. Furthermore, EV drivers often

complain about “range anxiety” – a problem that requires further improvements in EV technology and government investment in charging infrastructure. While everyone can agree that driving a vehicle that emits no emissions is a good idea, there are still challenges to overcome in order to encourage even more EV adoption and EV’s are one of many solutions to achieving environmental targets. Purchasing a more fuel-efficient vehicle or a hybrid electric are also solutions to the wider problem. While record high fuel prices are motivating people to consider new vehicle purchases, clean technology is constantly improving and providing more environmentallyconscious options for those looking to scale back on emissions. British Columbia’s clean energy incentives and investments in charging infrastructure are a testament to how governments can make clean energy vehicles more appealing to consumers, and something we hope to see more of in the future. TeslaModel X Bringing Innovation to the world

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, is no stranger to the world of innovation. He successfully created a breakthrough business in the form of Tesla, disrupting the automotive landscape forever. Despite facing uphill battles, Tesla has been leading the charge when it comes to the EV (electric vehicle) movement. They have successfully branded themselves as the benchmark of batterypowered vehicles - Tesla has used their unique platform as a way to advocate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and combatting climate change. In the Model X, we find an innovative and superior SUV with a top-notch safety rating, a lot of technology and a long driving range. However, all these features come at a hefty price tag for the average citizen. Design The Model X has brought new meaning to the word “innovation,” both in terms of the design and engineering. The SUV market has grown significantly over the years but it remains as one of the more conservative market, as automakers shy away from creating a SUV that is too trendy or too futuristic. The Model X proves that you can create something fashionable and at the same time still have the capabilities and functionality of SUV. If you look at the X from a distance, it doesn’t even look like a SUV. The Tesla Model X offers various configurations including a five seat, six seat and seven seat layout. Unlike the earlier versions, the middle seat can now fold forward to create extra cargo space. In the seven seat configuration, both the middle and back row can fold forward. Whatever seat configuration you choose, the Model X still offers best in class for interior storage space. For example, the six seat configuration provides 2180 litres of interior storage space. Given the fact that there is no motor under the front hood, the front of the vehicle also contains trunk space. The dashboard is very sleek and the panoramic windshield is the largest in any production car, providing an unparalleled view of the big sky above. One of the most defining features of the Model X is, of course, the Falcon Wings. The doors open with a double click on the key fob and allow easy access to the second and third row seats even in a very tight parking spot. The falcon wings only require a 12 inch clearance on either side to open fully. One drawback of the falcon doors is the inability to mount a roof rack as well as the amount of time it takes to actually open or close the doors themselves. And unfortunately, Tesla may have introduced an unnecessary

level of complexity with the winged doors, as owners complain of problems and errors stemming from this system. Technology in the Model X is top of the line, and drivers are given access to the ever-expanding Tesla Supercharger network. The touchscreen is a large 17 inch version and comes preloaded with Spotify. A few of the more interesting updates on the current model include Autosteer (up to 150km/hr on highways), Auto Lane Change (if you indicate while cruising, the car will automatically change lanes), Parallel Autopark, and Summon (which allows you to park and retrieve your vehicle on demand). Voice controls are initialized with the touch of a button and are fairly easy to use - feedback is provided on the display panel to ensure your command is understood before the vehicle follows through. You can check battery charge, location of your vehicle, lock and unlock doors, and summon your vehicle in or out of a parking space while using an app on your phone. In a further effort to mistake-proof, if you set a destination which is further than your Model X can travel with its current battery, it will automatically set the route to include charger stations. A pretty smart system! Performance New this year model is a 100kWh battery, which will net a 475 kilometre driving range before requiring a charge. This is leaps and bounds over other electric cars and is in part due to the aerodynamic nature of the vehicle. The Model X has a “drag coefficient” of 0.24, making is 20% lower than the Audi Q7 - the closest SUV in comparison. The Tesla Model X can accelerate from zero to 100 km/hr in as little as 3.1 seconds. Quirky tidbits are scattered throughout: for one, you can switch the acceleration mode from “Sport” to “Ludicrous.” The acceleration is butter smooth and it still feels strange to be in a car that makes almost no noise as it accelerates. No gear changes, no engine revving sound – just effortless acceleration. The handling is quite good for a large SUV, but it does lack road feel. In fact, the Model S has better steering feel than the Model X – which is a bit strange – but the accuracy is good and the car has great ride. Overall, the Model S feels like a sports sedan while the Model X truly feels like SUV. One may wonder, how long does it actually take to charge a

Model X? If you are using a Tesla-built supercharger it will take you an hour and 15 minutes and costs you around $18 CAD. The charge port is located in the rear light and will open automatically when it detects a power charger nearby. Tesla claims that the Model X is the “safest SUV ever” with many standard safety options to give it this title. Automatic collision avoidance and automatic emergency braking are included with updates rolling out often. There are twelve ultrasonic sensors on the Model X that detect surrounding objects, and no less than eight cameras that provide the driver with 360-degree vision. With a safety rating of 5-stars, the Model X has a rollover risk that is half that of any other vehicle in the same class. Summary Will the Tesla Model X stand the test of its time? Electric vehicles are still not mainstream vehicles so they do not have a proven track record yet (though that’s changing quickly), and only time will tell if these vehicles are built to last. The Tesla Model X comes in 3 different styles: 75D, 100D and P100D. The number denotes the battery kilowatt-hours, and the P stands for Premium. In Canadian dollars, the new Tesla Model X will set you back around $118,100 for the base 75D model while the P100D Model X starts at $189,600 and goes up from there, making the Model X a vehicle that is not accessible for everyone. The whole electric car industry is changing continuously, and more and more automakers are introducing cheaper alternatives to Tesla. While this trend brings additional challenges for Tesla, this innovative car company is ready to compete with the creative Model X. One thing is for certain - electronic vehicles are the way of the future and it can only improve from here.

2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Oh those Italians! They sure know how to please BY AKASH SABLOK

One line perfectly describes the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio: an Italian Swiss Army Knife of vehicles. The all-new Stelvio is stylish (extremely), functional (oh so much), and efficient (it’s fast). Joining its siblings, the 4C sports car and Giulia sedan, the Stelvio is the first SUV from the Italian luxury brand. Almost every auto manufacturer has an SUV in their line up, and practically so, with these vehicles being able to do double duty as people/stuff haulers, and sports cars. The body lines are gorgeous from almost every angle. If you saw a guy lying on his back, staring up sideways at a red Alfa in a parking lot in Surrey recently, that was me. If you said the Stelvio is a pumped up, taller version of the Giulia sedan, you wouldn’t be far off. The two models share their powertrains, suspensions, brakes, steering setups, most of their interior and exterior design and equipment, and many other components together. I am okay with Fiat Chrysler deciding on this approach – it works beautifully. I can use the above adjectives to describe the interior as well. Once seated in the driver’s seat, you are in a comfortable driving position, with a commanding view over other traffic. You are greeted with a thick racing style steering wheel that has an engine start/stop mounted on it – a la Ferrari. A race car start/stop button on a steering wheel in a vehicle that has so many cupholders that a minivan would be shamed. Only the Italians! Fun, joyous, light, firm, quick – all speak about the driving characteristics of the Stelvio. Pricing ranges from the low $50k’s to the almost three digits, quite the range. At the $95k mark, your Stelvio will have a Quadrifoglio (Italian

for “four-leaf clover”) badge on it. The badge on the outside means trouble for the likes of Porsche Macan GTS’s out there as this high-performance Alfa hits 100km from a standstill in only 3.6 seconds. Five hundred and five horses from the Ferrari-sourced 2.9L Twin-Turbo V6 make this possible. The non-Quadrifoglio versions hit 100km in 5.4 seconds. There are six versions of the Stelvio, with the first five iterations all below $60,000. The first five also hold a 2.0L inline Turbocharged Four cylinder in the engine bay. Alfa has utilized a mix of interior trim types. There is real dark grey oak wood trim, aluminum, carbon-fibre look trim, and high-quality plastics all around. The leather dash is a lovely touch. The rear seats will hold three humans. I would suggest in the middle seat be occupied by a younger version of the species as hip room is tight. Rear legroom is 31.9 inches. Moving to the back, the 525-litre cargo space is plenty of room to carry said middle passenger’s gear. When I travel with my family, it’s my two young boys that have more travel gear than my wife and I. A rearview camera is standard on the Stelvio, and other safety features come when you tick the on the option list for one of the two Driver Assistance packages. If you select both the Driver Assistance Static package and Driver Assistance Dynamic Plus package, you’ll get front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. Once put the pedal down, the rearview will be the farthest thing from your mind. The Stelvio stands alone in handling twisty roads. It steers and grips in fast corners

and encourages you to drive it like a sports car rather than an SUV. The perfect 50-50 weight distribution, sitting on 255/45 20 inch wheels, ensures a delightful balance and a neutral handling character that will reward you with grip and comfort if you drive it correctly. The ZF 8-speed automatic transmission knows what its job here is and it’s going to earn an employee of the month award. Alfa’s “DNA” shift options take the driving modes from D for Dynamic, to N for Natural, and finally A for Advanced Efficiency. Order the 505hp version, and you get a Race mode, which tightens up the adaptive suspension, steering, and throttle response. Multiple personalities, just like a Swiss army knife. Mercedes-Benz AMG GT C Roadster Stand Out Performance and Ride

Human limitation is two, the driver and a passenger. From the outside the cabin looks cramped – it’s the exact opposite, with loads of leg and headroom. My friends with an NBA contract should be okay here. Put the roof down, an 11 second event, and the world’s tallest human will have unlimited headroom. The top is a single-button affair, locking in closed or open position automatically. With the top up or down, rear visibility with the Roadster is limited – not an issue as you will be looking forward most of the time. The GT C is based on the AMG GT introduced by Mercedes for the 2015 model year. Slotted above the GT model, the GT C provides smiles all around with more power and an approximate $28,000 price premium over the GT. The GT C makes sensational sounds when you push your right foot onto the pedal that’s connected to the throttle of a twin-turbo 4.0L V8, releasing 550 horses at 5750 rpm and 502 lb-ft of torque at a low 1900 rpm. A speed of 100km/h will arrive from a standstill, in about three and a half seconds. Hello again Officer. During my drive of the GT last year, I don’t recall thinking “hmm, this vehicle could do with a little more power.” And yet here we are. Thank you to the engineering folks at Benz and Co. Sometimes what’s missing is a good thing – an over-assisted steering system is not on the Mercedes engineers to-do list. The steering is light, but rewards you with accuracy and feedback. Every curve is a smooth carving, with the car staying poised no matter what the road underneath is doing. The active rear-axle steering turns the rear wheels in the opposite direction of the fronts at speeds up to 100km/h, which essentially

cedes did not forget to put in Mercedes features, i.e. luxury, in their sports convertible. Plenty of leather, high-quality metal and plastic, and soft touch buttons fill in the cabin. AMG Ride Control adaptive suspension system coddles you when in comfort mode, and the active exhaust system can be altered to reduce the volume of the V8’s tune.

The COMAND infotainment centre is updated and provides access to almost all the cars features, but I find it less intuitive then some systems found in other models. And for a car over $150 grand, I would have preferred to see a 360-degree camera, over just a rear-view camera. The rear trunk space is tiny, but I doubt you will be bringing a coffee table home with this car - maybe just a side table or a lamp. Or maybe a catalogue from a furniture boutique. electronic safety features will rein you in before you have to explain to your insurance company why guardrail paint is on your car and vice-versa. The C variant of the GT is longer and wider than the standard GT, better to accommodate the 12.0” wide rear wheels with 305/30ZR-20. The wider and longer stance not only helps the car grip better, but also look better. Other drivers will spend most of their time seeing the rear of this vehicle so that’s not a bad thing. Mer-

Subaru goes big in a bid to woo young families BY KEITH MORGAN

CAPE BRETON, NS — All that was missing from the launch of the all-new 2019 Subaru Ascent was the family. The AWD Ascent is built big to haul big families around big country routes such as the gorgeous 298-kilometre Cabot Trail. Understandably, we don’t get to bring our families on car launches so we were denied the opportunity to hear the whoops and hollers that would surely have been the soundtrack to any trek along this storied route, flanked by the Atlantic and soaring cliffs. It would have been loud because this the largest vehicle has ever built, offering three rows to seat up to eight and loads of luggage. The Japanese manufacturer was concerned it was losing customers of child rearing age to such rivals as the Ford Explorer, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander and the VW Atlas. It had to think bigger than the Outback and Forester wagons. With such fierce competition in this hot segment, it could not merely pump up the proportions of its popular models and duplicate the features of its opposition. It needed to throw down the gauntlet and make a lot of features that are typically costlier options standard fare on the base model (loved the 19-cupholders and six USB ports).

aru backed its beast through a sandy/gravel track into the water to launch a large power boat and hauled it ashore with ease. The Cabot Trail was a good test for the new SUV’s versatility and pulling power. Admittedly, with just two of us aboard, one of whom was a skinny rake (not me), it was hardly put to its most serious test on the steep inclines and twisting roads. However, there was reason to believe even with every seat filled it would not be gear searching or struggling when facing the toughest challenge. On the flat, the zero to 100 km/h acceleration is around 7.5 seconds. And it keeps on pulling through that mid-range of acceleration where you might expect it to falter, while it catches its breath, so to speak. Steering is light and sensitive, but one quickly adapts. Ascent owners are unlikely to head off-road to plough through fast-flowing streams and make like a mountain goat on winding steep and narrow trails. But they can, if they really must. And the X-mode, which controls wheel slip through braking and ensures the best traction on hor-

The entry-level Convenience model, which starts at $35,995, delivers big time. It’s got full-time AWD, the company’s award-winning Eyesight driver assist system, which swings into action when collision conditions are detected, a continuously variable automatic (CVT) transmission with paddle shifters, three-zone automatic climate control, a 6.5-inch infotainment system, heated front cloth seats, and a roof rack, to name just a few notable features. The Touring, Limited and top-of-the-line Premier trims ramp up the extras and, of course, the prices in roughly $5,000 steps, topping out close on $50,000. It seems the only option limitations are in engine choice but arguably with good reason. rible muddy inclines. When it combines with hill descent control it’s like riding a roller coaster in slo-mo! At first, you don’t trust it to keep you on track, but it soon gains your confidence as you steer round the curves and find yourself safely at the bottom of steep hill you wouldn’t attempt to navigate on foot! When we completed the off-road jaunt, my drive partner grinned as we both agreed it was likely the vehicle we occupied would not likely see such conditions again. It’s likely going to spend more time heading to hockey practice and loading up with the weekly Big Shop. For looks, this vehicle is not going to be swooned over and the interior, while neat and ergonomically sensible, is not leading edge in design beauty. But who cares? – Certainly not those attracted to Subaru for functionality and reliability.

Initial, numbers out of Subaru, show a fuel economy of 8.9 L/100km highway and 11.5 in the city, using regular gas. It’s a contender.

BY JEFF MELNYCHUK Trim is in. Head down to the local dealer with a particular car in mind and the first question you’ll likely be asked is, “were you after a DX, LX, ES, ES-R, EX-R . . . Or the ES-RXLI with the sport, leather, chrome and navigation packages?” After a few sleepless nights comparing massive volumes of spreadsheets, you would cross your fingers and make a selection. It might be tough now, but the venerable “trim level” has roots nearly six decades deep and was (is) used as a method to offer prestige - and make more money - on a particular model or body style of car. Things were done a little differently back then. Whereas today you could select, say, a Toyota Camry, and order the trim package of your choice, back in the late 1960s, those trim levels would probably be given completely different model designations. Take Chrysler’s Plymouth division. For 1969, its popular mid-size b-body design was entering the second year of production. There were five different engine sizes to be had - a 225-cubic-inch inline six cylinder and four v-8 engines displacing 318, 383, 426 and 440 cubic inches - and a four-door sedan, a four-door wagon, a two-door hard top and coupe and convertible body styles. And, although they were essentially the same car - from quarter panels and bumpers to suspension pieces and frameless unibody construction - most were given their own model designations/names based on trim and engine size, kind of like today . . . Only different. Plymouth’s base b-body model for 1969 was the Belvedere (the smaller, cheaper valiant was an a-body) followed by the Satellite and Sport Satellite. The musclecars that everyone is paying big bucks for these days are the road runner and GTX, the latter receiving a higher level of trim. If you think it’s tough selecting a new car today, imagine life back in 1969. Generally, three types of buyers went after Plymouth’s b-body. On the one hand, the trunk and interior volume worked particularly well for families looking to cram a lot into their monthly payments. And, of course, go-fast die-hards couldn’t get enough of the Road Runner and GTX performance cars which, starting around $3,000, could tear the tires clean off their 14x6 road wheels. The third category of buyer was perhaps the most interesting, simply because its members seemed to desire the look and feel of a

The ultimate “insult” inspired the ultimate luxury car ... It was an off-hand comment, of course, but Ettore Bugatti didn’t take it that way. It was an insult, he thought, and he fumed about it. And he just couldn’t let it slide. The story of the largest, most expensive automobile ever built - and really the story behind Ettore Bugatti, the legendary automaker - began simply enough at a dinner one night - red wine and red meat. And it ended with Mr. Bugatti seeing red, too. It was the mid-1920s and the 40-something Bugatti, an Italian

born in 1881 in fashionable Milan to artistic parents, was already on his way to creating a slew of impressive cars. He was innovative in his automotive development, pioneering new methods of design and engineering while working for Deutz, a German company, eventually firing up his own company before he was 30. Bugatti built his cars with artistic execution and attention to detail. In 1910, at age 29, he created an extremely light, high-performance, 1.35-litre-four-cylinder vehicle. Four years later, a four-valve-per-cylinder configuration became the world’s first multi-valve engine produced in a series of vehicles. He was intelligent. He was innovative. And he was proud of what he produced. So, what about that dinner? At a gathering one night in France, Bugatti was seated next to an English woman. Somehow, the subject turned to luxury vehicles. Although no one doubted Bugatti’s ability to build very capable, very good-looking and very fast vehicles, the true luxury class automobile was, as it always had been, best represented by Rolls-Royce, the woman told Bugatti. You could have heard a spoon drop. A stunned Bugatti later termed it the ultimate “insult.” Spurned and obsessed, Bugatti proceeded to create his vision of the true luxury car for the crowned heads of Europe. Massive in size and scope, the Royale was a 300-horsepower vehicle that was six metres long and far ahead of the competition. It was luxurious. It was a masterpiece. It had a massive 12.7-litre engine. And Bugatti felt vindicated. Of course, he didn’t need to make a statement cast in aluminum and steel. Bugatti already had plenty going for him, even if not everyone was aware of it. Bugatti’s inventions - engines, machine tools, railway cars - would all be remembered for their influence on 20th-century design. His concept of modular engineering meant every Bugatti model had parts that were used in other Bugatti models. That was a first for its time. Bugatti also created single-overhead-camshaft designs with three valves per cylinder in either

four- or eight-cylinder configurations. Transmissions and axles were interchangeable for either race cars or production models. Either one could be driven on the road. It was global design before the industry was global. His common-platform-engineering principles made him a pioneer. And his race cars were some of the best in the world, taking home significant finishes including the first-ever Monaco Grand Prix. The Bugatti Type 35, a light and efficient vehicle, became an industry leader on the track, winning hundreds of races. His design for multi-spoke alloy wheels for the Type 35 is one of the most widespread of its type today. But, as an automotive artist, he was obsessed. Even the engines he built were crafted according to aesthetics. Every Bugatti that left the factory had to have perfectly balanced proportions and impeccable design. After those comments that night at dinner, Bugatti poured his resources into making the Royale. Unfortunately for him, it was the wrong time and place. Between 1929 and 1932, only six of those majestic vehicles were built. Three were sold. The Great Depression made sure no king ever bought one, either. One was sold to the socalled “prince” of the French textile industry, Armand Esders. But Bugatti ultimately failed to maintain longevity. Unable to make the transition from light cars to luxury cars, he was unable to build the empire he once dreamed of. Mostly, he lost his creative edge when his wife and son died in 1939. He was also imprisoned after the Second World War, charged with collaborating with the enemy. One of the most creative minds in automotive history, he died in the Paris suburb of Neuilly on Aug. 21, 1947, just a month short of his 66th birthday. At that time, there were about 7,950 Bugattis rolling around. Today, some are worth millions of dollars, including the Royale, a vehicle that is regarded quite simply as pure luxury, famous for styling, craftsmanship and outstanding engineering. And, once and for all, the off-hand comment was forgotten in the ether of time.
