There are many paths to the road to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and EVs are only one path

Around the world, governments and industries are increasingly turning their attention to emission reductions and decarbonization. One of today’s biggest solutions lies in green technology, and auto makers are determined to further innovate and evolve in order to create even better transportation options for the future.

In May, B.C. had the pleasure of hosting 50 Shades of Green: Driving towards a Decarbonized Future – an event featuring presentations from industry leaders and panel discussions on the automotive industry and its role as a driver of technological change.

Over the course of history, the automotive industry has continually altered and advanced the way people viewed transportation and energy, from the creation of the steam powered car, combustion engine to the current electric and hybrid vehicles.

What became evident over the course of the event was the extent to which vehicle manufacturers are committed to reducing emissions, improving air quality and fuel efficiency, and creating viable solutions for consumers.

While most people think about electric vehicles when

it comes to green transportation, one of the main takeaways from 50 Shades of Green is that there are many paths to the road to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and EVs are only one path. Scrapping older vehicles, ride sharing, public transit, and alternative fuels are also part of the larger solution and manufacturers are unveiling new internal combustion models that are even more fuel-efficient with each passing year.

Beyond highly efficient gasoline-powered vehicles , technological advancements are providing exciting new developments every day in alternative energy vehicles like EVs and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. Toyota, for example, has announced that it will reduce new vehicle CO2 emissions by 90 per cent by 2050 compared to 2010 levels.

It’s important to recognize, however, that the transition takes time as industry grapples with a host of unique challenges including additions to charging infrastructure and investment in design and battery technology.

Working through these challenges, auto makers have continued to create new clean energy vehicle options to

cater to each consumer’s taste, resulting in a B.C. success story – a 20 per cent increase in processed applications through the CEVforBCTM program in 2017 vs. 2016. And if the early part of 2018 is any indication – during which we have seen a 150 percent increase in CEV incentive applications - EVs are quickly becoming a serious option for many BC consumers.

As governments and industries work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and refine and discover new energy solution, the auto industry has become an important linchpin in facilitating conversations.

The auto industry continues to facilitate important debates about emissions reduction and decarbonisation through events like 50 Shades of Green and the determination to further innovate makes the industry not only a technological leader, but a climate leader as well.

It’s the hot topic at every dinner party, twitter feed, water cooler and local talk radio in the Lower Mainland, with many bemoaning, “When will it end, and how far will it go” And there’s little sign of reprieve with a weaker currency, limited refinery supplies, and a new carbon price behind the surge. A poll from Insights West suggests about 17 percent of us believe we’ll be forking out as much

an electric motor and battery that can be connected into the power grid to charge, but also has the support of an internal combustion engine.

Affordability: Consumers can expect to pay more for electric and hybrid vehicles than gaspowered vehicles. But as demand increases, costs may drop.

An electric car will save you money in the long run and is lower-maintenance to boot. There’s no oil change, the brakes last almost forever (if you use regenerative braking), and spark plugs, clutches and distributor caps are vestiges of the past.

B.C. is a leader on the electric vehicle front, because of the efforts of its dealers, boasting the highest sales of electric vehicles per capita in the country, and one of the most extensive charging networks in Canada. The Clean Energy Vehicle for BC (CEVforBC™), British Columbia’s Point of Sale Incentive Program is designed to make clean energy vehicles (CEV’s) more affordable for British Columbians. Only new cars are eligible for the rebate — and have an initial maximum point of sale incentive of $5,000. Locally, you can find over 30 different models and vehicles that are available for the $5,000 incentive.

Environmental savings: Electric cars produce no emissions from the tailpipe and reduce dependency on oil-based fuels. Furthermore, EVs will not need oil changes or emissions checks that traditional vehicles require, further saving resources.

Fill-ups: EVs can be charged at home using personal charging kits or at charging stations in the neighborhood. Charge times will depend on the size of the vehicle and its battery.

Charging at home is the least expensive way of charging your electric vehicle.

On average, the cost to charge your electric car at a public fast-charging station (DCFC) is $10 an hour (billed by the minute, therefore 20 minutes = $3.33). It will cost you much less to charge your EV at your residential level 2 charging station.

EVs cost as little as $320 a year to fuel. When compared to $2,400 for a gasoline vehicle*, (typical BC gas prices and average driving assumptions) those are significant cost savings.

Short trips: Individuals who travel 80 miles or less per day may find pure electric vehicles advantageous. Those who have to go further should consider hybrids that offer greater range.

However, Tesla, Chevy and Nissan EVs have recently moved beyond the 200-mile range before requiring a charge.

Charging stations: A quick review of pluginbc.ca/ revealed that there are more than eleven charging stations available in Langley alone — everywhere from Costco and Willowbrook to many of the banks and car dealerships.

The EV infrastructure in B.C. is some of the best in Canada.

There are now close to 1,000 Level 2 charging stations and 30 BC Hydro-installed DC Fast Chargers across B.C. with plans for many more to be instituted in the next few years.

More curves than a Hula girl,” brags the blue short-sleeved T-shirt. With 617 twists, bends, switchbacks and “oh-mygod” comments covering 83 kilometres of road, no kidding. “There’s no whining, no crying and no bellyaching.” The tongue-in-cheek article of upper-body apparel makes more sense once you’ve braved the route to the oasis of Hana from the hippie-surfer-dude beach town of Paia (Pie-EE-ah) on Maui’s northeast coast. It might only be 83 kilometres to Hana from Paia, but its two hours of travel time, minimum, without stopping for any of the countless roadside natural attractions along the way. “Keep arms and legs inside vehicle.” Excuse me? Is this a ride through Jurassic Park? No, even if there is a real honest-to-goodness rainforest, but trees and rock cuts are

close enough to deliver serious injury to dangling limbs. Just to put things in perspective, there are spectacular driving routes everywhere, but few will challenge your ability to control a motor vehicle while looking at everything else but the road, have you trust that other distracted and green tourists know what they’re doing, too, and teach you to pull over when the locals ride your bumper and honk for you to get out of the way. Few roads will completely and utterly physically wear you out. And few are honoured by T-shirts - the great American tribute - that remind you of the experience with sage advice well after the fact. “Persons with back, neck, knee and heart problems should not experience this attraction.” The T-shirt reads like a warning for an amusementpark ride, but the danger is no joke.

As GM’s fifth design boss in nearly 100 years, he was a quiet man who let his work do all the talking

In the world of automotive design, where each crease has a meaning and every crevice has a story, Wayne Cherry was a wiggle in a world of straight lines. In an era of pop-star obsessions over designers and their creations, General Motors’ former North American design boss was the anomaly. He was a Midwestern boy with a global outlook; a soft-spoken executive whose artwork spoke volumes. Not extravagant like GM’s former product czar Robert Lutz. Not a cult figure like Ford design whiz J Mays. And definitely not a conversation piece the way BMW designer Chris Bangle has been.

Cherry always preferred the shadows. He let his vehicles take the spotlight. “I’m probably biased, but I think that design is terribly important,” he once told The Car Connection, an automotive Web site. “But we (designers) shouldn’t get in the way.” In 42 years at GM, the last dozen years as the leading designer, Cherry always avoided being in the way. But his products shook the landscape. The roll call of concepts and innovative designs that were created on his watch reads like a list of automotive all-stars. The Chevrolet SSR. The Pontiac Solstice. Cadillacs. Chevy trucks. And Hummers. Under Cherry’s direction, GM revealed more than 35 concept cars and trucks around the world, more than any other automaker in such a brief period.

An award-winning designer, Cherry, now retired and in his late 70s, is considered by many as the leader of a design renaissance at GM. And all of it occurred during some of the most challenging times, financially, for the automaker. Born in Indianapolis, Ind., Cherry began his career in 1962 in GM’s advanced design studios

after graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Calif. Three years later, after helping create the groundbreaking 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado and the first-generation Chevrolet Camaro - two cars that would become cult classics - he transferred to Vauxhall Motors in Luton, England. It was considered a “temporary” assignment. He returned to the United States . . . 26 years later. During his time in Europe, Cherry climbed the corporate ladder, leading the design direction for Vauxhall and Opel. He established a new identity for European cars and trucks and would help bring GM Europe to No. 1 in overall sales through vehicles like the Corsa, Vectra and Omega, to name a few. Cherry returned to North America in 1991 and was named GM’s new design boss a year later. As just the fifth design boss in nearly 100 years of GM history, Cherry quickly moulded, shaped, sculpted and stamped the automaker’s product line. Usually soft-spoken and rarely outgoing, a one-liner was just that with Cherry . . . a one-liner. He wasn’t flashy. And, mostly, he wasn’t forceful. Even with GM struggling over money woes, he had work to do and his designs said plenty. “Frankly, we had to rebuild an awful lot of bridges (in the early 1990s),” he told The Car Connection. “For a number of years, all advanced design operations had to stop. A lot of our advanced work wasn’t focused on product.”

Under Cherry’s leadership, it found life. In America, his first vehicles were the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette and

the Impala SS. But the real renaissance took shape with the new direction at Cadillac. Pushed aside by imports and forgotten in the automotive landscape, Cherry helped bring Cadillac back to prominence with a set of angular lines and a defined style. He found his greatest success with the CTS and the Escalade and his Cadillac Sixteen ultra-luxury concept car was characterized as “breathtaking” by the automotive press. There were hits, but there were also some misses. Cherry was responsible for the Hummer H2 as well as the Cadillac SRX. He also thought trucks shouldn’t get the short shrift, telling a reporter once that “trucks deserve design, too.” But his influence on advanced computer design and hiring practices was perhaps even more profound.

He encouraged interactive, plasma-screen reviews of products in two- and three-dimensional models. And he hired from other companies, taking in talent from Chrysler, Renault, Audi and Fiat, a practise not common at GM in the past. Cherry retired on Jan. 1, 2004, handing over the design reigns to Ed Welburn, an executive previously in charge of body-on-frame architectures for GM Design. But Cherry will not soon be forgotten. People still ogle his Cadillac Sixteen concept.

Ford’s J Mays even called it “the best damn piece of work to come out of GM styling since (former GM design boss) Bill Mitchell’s days.”
