Heritage Ranch

Waskasoo Park Trail System Walks, Hikes & Bikes

Red Deer’s beautiful parks and natural green spaces are well known throughout Alberta with over 100 km of easily accessible, paved, walking, hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails connecting park users to beautiful green areas and park attractions. Pack a picnic lunch and stop at one of the many picnic tables or shelters along the way, sip a coffee while the kids play on one of the playgrounds, or just breathe in the sweet clean air and listen to the birds on a peaceful walk.

Bower Ponds

Heritage Ranch is a great starting point if you’re planning to explore the trail system throughout the river valley and a destination on its own with a network of over 20 km of official and informal trails. Located along the river, the area was once used as a quarry and has now been fully reclaimed into an amazing green space with a fishing pond.

Maskepetoon Park

Explore over 3 km of interpretive trails in an area nested along the Red Deer River. The park includes many unique natural features including one of the most easterly located tamarack fen in the province.

Devonian Trail

Grab a coffee and head out for a quiet morning stroll along the ponds or head out with the kids later in the day and combine your walk with a stop at the playground. Take advantage of the trails along the river to extend your walk to Heritage Ranch.

The Devonian Trails connect a series of smaller parks along Piper and Waskasoo Creek, from the southern edge of the city to the Red Deer River. Follow the entire trail from Bower Woods to Gaetz Park or bring the family to Rotary Picnic Park and explore the trails leading to nearby Kin Kanyon where another playground awaits.

Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary

The federal Red Deer Migratory Bird Sanctuary, established in 1924, is the oldest of only 4 in Alberta. Follow the Dr. George path (wheelchair accessible) for a 1 km loop with a stop at the bird blind on the west lake or head out for a 4 km hike along the edge of the sanctuary. Take your time to stop and look at the flowers, birds and wildlife that make their home in this wild refuge in the middle of the city.

McKenzie Trails Recreation Area

Located in the heart of downtown (47A Avenue and 48 Street), Red Deer’s outdoor water park features spray, splash and play equipment with zones designed for different ages, with 35 different interactive components that promise to deliver cool refreshing family fun on hot summer days.

Welcome to Red Deer’s nature themed play space for family water adventure and outdoor exploration. Discovery Canyon features a unique interactive water feature complete with rapids, sandy beaches, viewing decks, picnic areas and more.

Great West Adventure BMX Park

The site of an 335 metre technical track for BMX biking, complete with many obstacles including triple and double jumps, step-ups and more. Local, regional and national championships have been held here and it is the home of the Red Deer BMX Club.

A very popular spot, nearby you can play nine holes at the par 3 pitch and putt golf course or enjoy a game of horseshoes. There is a boat launch area, which is also used in winter for snowmobilers to access the river.

Created and maintained by mountain bike users, these trails provide climbs, drops and various features for beginner, intermediate and advanced mountain bikers looking for a challenge! An environmentally sensitive wetlands area featuring special waterfowl, this natural parkland area is attractive to pedestrians and borders.

Rotary Park

State-of-the-art playground, with more than 50 play activities for children, picnic shelters, fire-pits and washrooms are available on site. Climb to the top of Piper Mountain for a spectacular view of the city. Nearby is a skate park, which is a popular destination for skateboarders.

Boasts hiking and biking trails that wind along the creek valley. Enjoy a picnic or hot dog roast, cool your feet in the wading pool or enjoy the playground area.

Three Mile Bend - Off Leash Dog Park

Head out on a 3 km loop along the river and the area’s many ponds, take in one of the side trails or extend your adventure along the paths leading to River Bend Golf Course or back into the city.

Collicutt Centre

There’s tons of fun for the whole family at this state-of-the-art 250,000 sq. ft. fitness and wellness centre, including 290 m four lane running track, 2 indoor soccer pitches, an NHL size ice arena, gymnastics facility, field house as well as 2 climbing walls, bouldering room, and an indoor wave pool with spray park and waterslide.

GH Dawe Community Centre

Amazing water features at the Dawe include a hot tub, lane pool, leisure pool with two waterslides and a splash pool. You can also enjoy working out in the fitness centre, skating or playing broom ball in the arena or enjoy a class in the fitness studio. Kids love the Dawe too and will have a blast in the child minding area.

Michener Aquatic Centre

The facility boasts a lane pool, therapy/play pool, and a separate dive tank. There is a small fitness area along with a great sauna to complete your workouts.

Recreation Centre

The downtown Recreation Centre is a great place to go for a swim. The facility boasts an indoor 25 m pool with hot tub, whirlpool and sauna, and steam room. Once summer arrives you and your family can bask in the sunshine and cool off in the 50 m outdoor pool which is complete with diving platforms and splash pool. Surrounding the facility is a beautiful park with picnic areas. Next to the centre is the Blue Grass Sod Farms Central Spray & Play.

SILENT LEGACY The City of Red Deer is home to one of the largest public collections of life-sized bronze sculptures (ghosts) in Canada.

There are currently over ten ghosts scattered throughout downtown. One of the most dramatic is “Sound the Alarm,” located at 49 Street and 48 Avenue. This bronze, which depicts firefighters and their horses surging into action, is a vibrant historical representation.

When you visit this ghost, you can also see many more pieces of Red Deer’s history – all within a short walking distance. “Sound the Alarm” is located next to the former Armoury/Fire Hall, one of the oldest buildings in Red Deer, which now houses a portion of Red Deer Public Library. The building can also be your starting place for heritage walking tours, and a map located on the second floor inside will point you in the right direction.
