Hiking: Keep it Short and Sweet

Teapot Hill (Cultus Lake) Trail head: located near the Honeymoon Bay group site on Columbia Valley Road. Some very steep sections. View of Cultus Lake and Columbia Valley at the summit. Distance/ time: 5 km roundtrip, two hours. Elevation gain: 280 metres. Degree of difficulty: moderate.

Seven Sisters (Cultus Lake) Trail head: located across from Spring Bay picnic area. This trail connects Entrance Bay and Clear Creek campgrounds.

Along the trail are seven large Douglas fir trees, some standing, some fallen. Distance/time: 4 km roundtrip, one-and-a-half hours. Elevation gain: 120 metres. Degree of difficulty: easy.

Bridal Veil Falls.

Chilliwack is surrounded by mountains offering a world of hiking right in our own backyard, but sometimes people don't have the time or level of fitness to spend an entire day hiking up mountain trails.

Hiking: Keep it Short and Sweet Duck Farm Loop (Yarrow)

roundtrip, 30 minutes. Degree of difficulty: easy.

Trail head: Head west on Vedder Mountain Road. Just before you go over the railroad tracks and head into Yarrow, you'll see a parking lot on the left (south) side. Note: This is a popular mountain biking trail. Distance: 4 km roundtrip.

Elevation gain: 400 metres. Degree of difficulty: moderate.

Chilliwack Community Forest Park (multiple trails) Trail head: located on Allan Road, off Nixon Road (note: Allan road is steep). The trail access road is on your right and the parking lot is 800m from the turnoff. Trail distances and degrees of difficulty: Pi:txel Trail (easy) - 1.5 km, Broken Tree Trail (moderate) - 0.6 km, Upper Canyon Trail (difficult) - 0.6 km, Cholqthet (moderate) - 2 km, Canyon Loop Trail (moderate) - 2.2 km.

Browne Creek Wetlands The Browne Creek Wetlands are located in the Vedder Greenway, on the south side of the Vedder River in Yarrow , and extend from the Vedder River Campground to west of the Southern Railway bridge. Two main trails, appropriately named the Kingfisher and the Beaver trail, flank the rehabilitated spawning channels and allow trail users to observe the natural systems up close. Take time to visit this wonderful new recreational area where wildlife, recreation, education, sustainability and conservation align.

Play Time The Vedder Trail remains a popular destination that has just been made better. New this year is the addition of playground equipment at both the Peach Park and Vedder Park locations. The newly designed recreations areas include washroom facilities, picnic tables and water fountains. In addition, the Vedder Park location, accessed off Petawawa Road, includes a “green gym” which gives parents an opportunity to grab a quick workout while the kids play nearby.

Vedder Park is one of the newest additions to Chilliwack's playground network.

Soak up the summer Chilliwack has three popular spray parks, and both offer relief on the hottest summer days.

First, head to the Central Community Park, on Young Street and Victoria Avenue. During the day, the ground level fountain keeps the kids cooled off, while beautifully landscaped hills and terraced steps offer a place for a quiet picnic lunch. The park has washroom facilities, a playground nearby and is steps from boutique 12

Close to downtown, the Landing Leisure Centre’s outdoor spray park will bring out the kid in anyone. With a tugboat to steer, spray nozzle guns and a giant showering tower, the kids will have a whale of a time. And right next door is the city’s skate park, a giant climbing apparatus and piratethemed playground.

For the birds The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve is a shining gem in these days of conservation. A full 130-hectares have literally “gone to the birds” in an effort to maintain a habitat for this non-migrating species. There are over 200 heron nests within the reserve, along with painted turtles, bald eagles, and the Salish sucker.

The Rotary Interpretive Centre has a gift shop, interactive displays, helpful volunteers and information on the area’s many walking and interpretative trails, and activities.

The building and many of the trails are wheelchair accessible.

Turn the page Chilliwack is part of the Fraser Valley Regional Library network, with borrowing and returning privileges that stretch from Boston Bar to White Rock and almost everywhere in between. A Day in History Piper Richardson welcomes visitors to the Chilliwack Museum. Standing in perpetuity on the front lawn, the bronze statue is a testament to a Canada’s war history, and sacrifices made by our soldiers. Inside the museum, a large display takes viewers through a timeline of Chilliwack’s history, beginning with the Sto:lo people. The museum is always improving their displays, and featuring unique points in our history. Donations accepted.

Atchelitz Thresherman’s Museum and Pioneer Village This museum and antique site is free to enter, with donations accepted, and open throughout the year.

Take a step into the past and see their large collection of tractors, trucks, buggies, agricultural and domestic machinery and equipment. The site includes a general store, a library, a chapel and a playground for kids to enjoy. The site is located at 44146 Luckakuck Way, adjacent to Chilliwack Heritage Park.

Freedom For Four-Legged Friends Vedder Park hosts the city’s newest off-leash dog park, with separated areas for large and small dogs. Both areas are fenced off, with open grass areas and wheelchair accessible gravel/dirt paths.

The area is accessible off the Vedder Rotary Trail and off Petawawa Road.

Island 22 Regional Park is another dog friendly area, with plenty of room to roam. In addition to an off-leash dog area, the site has picnic tables, benches, a boat launch for the Fraser River, equestrian area, mountain bike skills park and washrooms.

It’s located at 45695 Cartmell Road. Be aware of occasional closures due to fluctuating river levels, and a Fraser Valley Regional District parking fee.

Off leash parks offer Rover room to roam.

There are several off-leash dog parks where residents can let their furry friends run freely.

In Cultus Lake, an off leash area is located behind the Fire Hall and Public Works yard, off Sunnyside Blvd. There is also a dog swim area at the end of Sunnyside Blvd as well as at the far end of Beach Ave. All other areas in village, dog owners are required to keep their pets under control and on leash.

Hope River A Hidden Oasis Downtown

Interpretive signs and lookouts guide visitors along the Hope River.

Take a stroll along the slough The Hope River Corbould Park is a hidden gem in Chilliwack.

It's an urban oasis, part of the Rotary Trail system, and a popular green space offering rich biodiversity, close to downtown.

The waterway attracts spawning salmon that can be heard splashing around a specially built salmon viewing platform.

The section of slough stretches from Young Road to near McCammon elementary, and the park attracts walkers, cyclists and people pushing baby strollers. There are often bird

watchers, or anglers, and those who come to have a leisurely picnic or even a wedding in the treelined little park.

Those who mosey along the banks with binoculars have fond hopes of spotting wildlife, and birds, from the great blue heron, red tail hawk and eagle, to the much more rare green heron with their telltale yellow legs.

It's not uncommon to see hardworking beaver chugging up the slough, and frolicking river otters having a blast in the water.

The Hope slough is a historic stream channel, and still well loved by local

residents and residents alike with a winding path that is part of the Rotary Trail system.

Although many people mistakenly believe the slough is already dead or choked out, in fact it is teeming with life, home to fish species, like chum and coho salmon, to catfish, cutthroat trout, pikeminnow, and chub. The construction of a fish viewing platform in 2005 was part of a community project with DFO and community support to rehab the oxygen-depleted slough with a spawning riffle, a bed of gravel for spawning in quick moving water.

Speedskating Club. The Fliers' most famous alumni is Alec Janssens, a 25 year old member of the Canadian national speedskating team.

The Chilliwack Spartan Swim Club trains swimmers to compete at the regional, provincial, national and international levels. 2007 world champion and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Brent Hayden is a Spartan alum and recent graduates Jessie Gibson (UBC), Carson Olafson (UBC) and Colton Peterson (SFU) are making waves in university.

The Chilliwack Stingrays are a less competitive summer swim club operating from early May through early August, using Rotary Pool as their home base.

Lacrosse players have two options in Chilliwack.

The Chilliwack Mustangs offer boxlacrosse while the new Chilliwack Hawks run a field lacrosse program from September through February. The Hawks welcome players in the U-7, U-9, U-11 and U-13 and play home games at Exhibition Stadium or the Tzeachten Sports Fields (on Bailey Road).

Chilliwack Minor Baseball's home base is the beautiful Fairfield Island diamonds, viewed as one of the top facilities in the province and a regular host of provincial championships.

Players as young as five years old can get on the field through CMBA's BlastBall program. Players can go all the way up the ladder to CMBA's junior men's team.

Paddlers can hit the water recreationally or competitively with the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence.

The CCE has been offering kayak instruction and paddling opportunities for more than 30 years, using Cultus Lake and the Chilliwack River Valley as its home base.

The CCE schedule, which can be viewed online at chilliwackcentreofexcellence. sportical.com, is jam packed with clinics and races, with events currently planned through mid-October.

The club began as a training center for national team athletes and Olympians.

The Never Ending Story More than books at your local libraries Chilliwack has three locations to visit when checking out a book, video and a wide range of multimedia items.

Each location hosts events, meetings and special clubs regularly, from Conversation Circles to baby storytimes, Lego building times to monthly book clubs. The libraries are also lending out items that support learning, and members can borrow a number of items, like Spheros and ukeleles. They also host events featuring virtual reality, green screens, and other “playground” items. Keep an eye on their programming for more information.

Authentic Sto:lo experiences Explore Sto:lo arts, culture, traditions, and language at the Coqualeetza grounds in Chilliwack.

For four Fridays in July, the city’s historic downtown comes alive with music, food and fun.

Party in the Park is revving up to take over Central Community Park with another great line up of local entertainment, brought by the indefatigable Trevor McDonald. The entertainment lights up the Chances Chilliwack Community Stage each Friday from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

But that’s not all.

The fun spills onto Wellington Ave., where a pop-up market will offer an eclectic ensemble of vendors and artisans.

Hungry? Then wander over to Mill Street where a giant food fare will satisfy any appetite. Sample fare from local restaurants, as well as specialty food trucks.

There’s also activities for the kids, demonstrations and information – making it the biggest community celebration of the summer.

Cheam Lake Wetlands Cheam Lake Wetlands is a 107-hectare park located in Electoral Area D comprised of lake, marsh and forest. It is popular for walking, picnicking and bird watching and is home to many insect, mammal and bird species. To date, 184 different bird species have been recorded in the park.

The park's trail system is approximately two kilometres long. It is ideal for all ages and features raised walkways and an elevated viewing platform. This park is designed and managed to protect sensitive habitat and wildlife.

A Walk In The Park from beginner to expert. It features five different riding zones and one perimeter trail. The gatehouse is staffed during the summer months.

An incredible number of migratory birds move through the park in the late summer. Many bald eagles perch in the park's trees during the winter months. Sometimes, you can spot a harbour seal swimming in the river and if you’re very lucky, a white sturgeon jump. Equestrian facilities include jumps, riding ring, trails and corrals. Several equestrian events take place annually at the park. The Island 22 boat launch is one of the largest in the Lower Mainland. It can accommodate over a dozen simultaneous launchings, and can park approximately 100 trucks and trailers. This launch is located on the Fraser River, 15 minutes from the mouth of the Harrison River. The Bike Skills Park was designed to appeal to riders of all levels,

Browne Creek Wetlands The Browne Creek Wetlands are located in the Vedder Greenway, on the south side of the Vedder River in Yarrow , and extend from the Vedder River Campground to west of the Southern Railway bridge. While the primary feature of the area is the spawning channel network constructed by DFO and the Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition, the City of Chilliwack and Rotary Club of Chilliwack have partnered to develop a network of just over two kilometres of recreational trails along the spawning channels. Two main trails, appropriately named the Kingfisher and the Beaver trail, flank the rehabilitated spawning channels. Take time to visit this wonderful new recreational area where wildlife, recreation, education, sustainability and conservation align.

Chilliwack Sports Hall of Fame

Harvey Smyl, recent inductee into the Chilliwack Sports Hall of Fame.

The Chilliwack Sports Hall of Fame will induct its sixth class this fall.

Striving to highlight Chilliwack's rich sports history, the CSHOF has inducted athletes/teams/builders since 2013.

The inaugural class included former National Hockey Leaguer Dave Archibald, longtime coach Joe Ogmundson and the 1997 national champion Turbo junior baseball team.

In year two the CSHOF inducted former Canadian Football League great Rick Klassen and the 1968 military hockey national champion 3-Field Squadron.

The third class included the 1994 Chilliwack midget AAA provincial champions and legendary builder.

2016 was particularly significant as the CSHOF partnered with the Chilliwack Chiefs for the first annual Chilliwack Sports Dinner.

B.C. Lions head coach/general manager Wally Buono, Vancouver Whitecaps president Bobby Lenarduzzi and Vancouver Canucks legend Stan Smyl were on hand for the 2015 induction ceremony as Harvey Smyl and Lara MussellSavage were welcomed to the Hall.

Smyl was inducted as a builder, recognized for building the Chiefs into one of the top junior A hockey programs in Canada.

Mussell-Savage, a two-time world champion in the sport of ultimate frisbee, delivered a stirring speech as she became the first female athlete inducted into the CSHOF. The CSHOF display is located on the concourse at Prospera Centre.

Harrison Hot Springs Located 25 minutes north of Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs has been a popular resort town since the 1860s, when gold miners discovered its mineral hot springs.

Yarrow The quaint community of Yarrow harkens back to the late 1920s and goes to great pains to preserve much of the look and feel of that time along its main street, Yarrow Central Road. And for good reason. Yarrow's existence was hard won.

Sitting on the eastern edge of what once was the massive Sumas Lake, Yarrow was British Columbia's first Mennonite community. The lake was drained as part of a major project to control flooding in the valley and to create farmland. The town became home to hundreds of skilled, hardworking farmers fleeing hardship in Russia.

Yarrow continues to be predominately a farm community. However, it is also home to an eclectic array of artists and crafts people. A drive down Yarrow Central Road takes you past potters and carvers studios, stores and antique shops.

Bridal Falls The name alone evokes visions of delight and happiness. And the diminutive community lives up to its name in every way. Actually, Bridal Falls' popularity is understandable in the context of its setting alone.

Discover Adventures Nearby frame and its protector. The surrounding woodland is lush with trees, ferns and moss, and plenty of room for a family picnic with tables and green space throughout.

The Bridal Veil Falls flows with 400 feet of white aquatic tulle. Beauty aside, the falls actually claims the distinction of being the sixth-highest waterfall in Canada.

Hope and the Fraser Canyon A short, scenic, 25-minute drive east on Highway 1 takes you to Hope – a picturesque town situated on the bank of a wide, sweeping curve in the Fraser River.

Located throughout Hope are dozens of large chainsaw carvings by local carver Pete Ryan. A visit to the Hope Museum brings Hope's history as a Hudson's Bay fur trading post and gold rush town into perspective.

Othello Tunnels Andrew McCulloch, chief engineer on the Kettle Valley Railway project was quite a romantic person – for a scientist. An avid reader, McCulloch named the stations along his line for characters in Shakespeare's plays — such as Othello, Juliet and Lear.

Although the railway is now abandoned and cyclists ride the rails instead of trains, tourists can still visit the famous Othello-Quintette tunnels. As you walk through the long, dark tunnels and cross high rail bridges, you can read posted signs and learn about the impressive construction project.

McCulloch's greatest challenge was finding a way through the Coquihalla gorge, where the river cut a 300-foot channel in a wall of solid granite. While other engineers wanted to by-pass the gorge, McCulloch chose to build through it. Although the line was completed, constant washouts and rockslides plagued the railway line, causing it to close for good in 1959.

Pack a picnic lunch, and see McCulloch's wonder for yourself.

Hell's Gate In 1808, Simon Fraser found himself standing at the "gates of hell." He paused and considered the deepest and narrowest point of the Fraser River, then wrote this in his journal: "We had to travel where no human-being should venture."

Well, things have changed, and Hell's Gate is now a popular tourist destination.

Take an air tram ride across the canyon and view the power of the river and man's attempt to tame it. Browse various gift shops and displays, including a fisheries exhibit on the salmon that run the river each year. Cross a swinging suspension bridge. Listen to ghost stories about early railway workers and gold panners. Visit an old-fashioned general store or a fudge factory. Enjoy a salmon dinner at one of a number of restaurants.

Located about an hour north of Chilliwack on the Trans Canada Highway, Hell's Gate represents a monumental piece of British Columbia's history.
