June 1–8 is officially Seniors’ Week in Mission. In order to celebrate the event, organizers have put together a full schedule of activities for seniors, and the general public, to enjoy. From dancing to shrimp boils, barbecues to gardening seminars, and carpet bowling to movie matinées, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Look inside this month’s edition of As We Age to see a complete schedule of events and find out what’s happening for seniors in Mission.

Seniors’ Week filled with great activities Everyone is invited to see what Mission’s seniors are doing in the community

Seniors’ Week in Mission will be celebrated from June 1–8 and is a great opportunity to acknowledge the diversity of seniors and to increase awareness of their vital role in society.

Mission Coun. Danny Plecas has taken on the role as co-chair of seniors’ week and is helping to organize a busy schedule of vent.

This is the fifth year in a row that he has taken on this challenge.

“You can expect a variety of events held at different venues for seniors,” said Plecas.

Everything from a shrimp boil, breakfast party, ice cream social, dancing, carpet bowling, gardening seminars and more have been planned for this week.

“There’s lots going on, lots of opportunities to participate and we welcome everyone to come on out,” said Plecas.

He stresses that the event isn’t just for seniors, but the whole community, family members and anyone else interested in seeing what seniors are up to in this community.

“It’s an important event. People need to understand that seniors are very active. It’s good to see the areas or venues the seniors are involved in. There’s lots of things going on for seniors in Mission,” said Plecas.

One of the events during Seniors’ Week is an open house at the Mission Lawn Bowling Club.

On Tuesday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to noon, the group will open the doors of its facility (at 7560 Hurd St.) for indoor carpet bowling.

Linda Lang, president of the Mission Lawn Bowling Club, explained that the club’s focus is indoor carpet bowling, rather than lawn bowling. They have 20 members plus a group of seniors who participate as drop-in players.

“Carpet bowling is fun. It’s similar to curling and like Bocci,” she said.

The game play is fairly simple. A white ball is thrown down the carpet and each team has eight ball to throw. The team that gets their ball closest to the white ball wins a point.

While it sounds simple, it takes some practice to learn how to throw the balls accurately.

“We’re very casual here. We keep score, but once the game is over we erase the scores,” said Lang.

She said the club is a fun place for seniors to socialize and get a little exercise.

“It’s just for fun and it’s a social place for seniors. Many of them are single, for various reason, but we have a few couples that come as well.”

The club itself is supported by Mission’s Parks Recreation and Culture Department.

The club built the current location back in the 1970s, but the facility is on district land.

Lang said they are hoping that if a new seniors activity centre is constructed, the carpet bowling facility will move there.

The Mission Seniors Activity Centre held a Hawaiian-themed dance last week. The centre is planning to host a barbecue on June 8.

The barbecue runs from 1–3 p.m. at the centre (33100 10th Ave.) The centre runs a full schedule of events, throughout the year. Last week, a Hawaiian-themed dance attracted a big crowd, proving that you are never too old to dance and have fun.

Summer Bean Salad INGREDIENTS: 2 cans (11 ounces each) mandarin oranges, drained 1 can (16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (15 ounces) garbanzo beans or chickpeas, rinsed and drained

1 medium green pepper, chopped ½ cup chopped red onion ¼ cup minced fresh parsley ½ cup canola oil ¼ cup red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar

DIRECTIONS: 1. In a large bowl, combine the oranges, beans, green pepper, onion and parsley. In a jar with a tight-fitting lid, combine the oil, vinegar and sugar; shake well.

2. Pour over salad and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.

We rarely hear senior sexual health discussed openly in everyday conversation or in the media. Why is it that this important topic seems to become more taboo and less talked about as we age?

Experts agree that remaining mute on the subject matter leads to the general misconception that seniors lose interest in sex. But this is far from the truth and quite the opposite.

While it’s true that the frequency and flexibility to perform sexually will inevitably decline with age, research tells us that the majority of men and women between the ages of 50 and 80 are still happily and enthusiastically continuing sexually active lifestyles. Although individual libidos vary, the majority of us will lead healthy sex lives well into our senior years leading to multiple benefits in our health and well being.

The need for intimacy is timeless and this includes more than just sex. A physical touch, hug or hand hold, can provide many positive elements to one’s health and relationships. Studies show that you can enjoy sex and variations of sexual activity for as long as you wish. We should look forward to a satisfying sex life long after middle age.

In addition to providing healthy benefits, sexual activity gets better as we age.

As adults in later life, we typically have a higher level of self-confidence and self-assuredness. We’ve reached a point where our children are grown and life has mellowed with fewer distractions plus more free time.

A positive attitude and open mind about our sex lives can lead to a renewed positive body image and sense of self which will go a long way in the bedroom.

All tourists are at risk for traveller’s diarrhea.

While usually benign, this unpleasant condition can lead to complications, especially in older travellers and those with pre-existing health conditions. Be extremely careful about what you drink and eat, and wash your hands often.

Regardless of your destination, make a stop at your local travel clinic (or visit your doctor) before heading abroad. A health-care professional will be able to advise you on any vaccines or other precautions you might benefit from.

Tips for choosing the right reading glasses Reading glasses, widely available at optometry clinics as well as in most drugstores, are great for correcting presbyopia (commonly known as far-sightedness). If you need a new pair of glasses to help you see up close, here are a few things to consider.

First things first: you’ll need to determine the lens strength required to correct your far-sightedness. Because vision problems can vary due to an assortment of factors, don’t simply buy the first pair you get your hands on. Visit an eye doctor to find out exactly how strong your lenses need to be in order to improve your vision. Prescriptions typically vary between +0.50 and +3.50.

Next, start shopping for a pair of reading glasses to suit your style and needs. Whatever your tastes and budget, you’re sure to find an extensive selection of options to choose from.

Style concerns aside, consider how you’ll be using your new glasses. If you plan on wearing them for extended periods, choose a pair with a lightweight frame.
