Alberta Farmland Values Keep Climbing Alberta producers should prepare for a possible easing of farmland values, although the latest Farm Credit Canada (FCC) Farmland Values Report indicates average values continued to increase in Canada in 2015. In Alberta, the average value of farmland increased 11.6 per cent in 2015, following gains of 8.8 per cent in 2014 and 12.9 per cent in 2013. Values in the province have continued to climb since 1993. The report shows that nationally, and in many key agriculture regions, the average value of farmland increased at a slower pace last year. Overall, there appears to be greater volatility with a higher number of locales where values decreased. J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief agricultural economist, said a strong

agriculture sector – supported by healthy crop receipts and low interest rates – continued to sustain increases in farmland values in 2015. But some of the key factors that influence farmland values are beginning to change. “We’re now seeing lower commodity prices offset by low interest rates and a weak dollar. The weak loonie not only makes our exports more competitive, but helps producers receive a better price for their commodities that are mainly priced in US dollars,” Gervais said. “It becomes a real tug-of-war between competing factors that influence farmland values.” Average farmland values in Canada showed a 10.1 per cent increase in 2015, compared to a 14.3 per cent increase in 2014, and a 22.1 per cent increase in

Rolling Eases Pea and Lentil Harvest The goal of rolling pea and lentil fields after seeding is to improve harvesting operations and to assure crop quality. By means of pushing stones into the soil, breaking dirt lumps, and smoothing out soil ridges, post-seeding rolling enhances harvestability by providing a more level field surface. “A level field surface improves the capture of low hanging pods, restricts earth tag in the seed sample, aids in harvesting lodged crops, prevents cutter bar and internal combine damage, and allows faster harvesting speed,” says Neil Whatley, Crop Specialist, Alberta AgInfo Centre. Research results and grower experience have provided sev-

eral rolling guidelines, and rolling can be done either prior to crop emergence or post-emergently. “The most appropriate time to roll pulse fields is shortly after seeding, but it’s not always possible due to delays from other spring seeding work or rainfall,” says Whatley. Due to a risk of soil erosion, growers may also wish to delay rolling if the soil is very dry, is of a sandy texture, or the surface lacks residue from last year’s crop. Lentil and pea fields can be safely rolled up to the five to seven node (three to five true leaf) stage. Since a seedling’s vascular system is tightly filled with water early in the morning, it is susceptible to breakage when

rolled. This breakage can be prevented by waiting to roll later in the morning, or in the afternoon when plants are slightly wilted. However, experience has shown that rolling sets seedlings back when air temperatures are high (25 to 30⁰ C). “Given the thicker and less flexible nature of a pea seedling’s stem and branching structure, be extra cautious not to roll field pea plants too early in the morning when they are stiff and turgid,” says Whatley. Rolling past the appropriate node stage breaks the main stem or sidebranches, allowing disease entry which reduces yield. Rolling when the plants are damp can spread foliar diseases throughout the field, and rolling when the

Next Generation Residue management The I-2100 uses the Coil-Tech Coulter II, a heavier coil spring, to carry larger 5-bolt hubs and 22" blades, increasing Coil-Tech’s jackhammer effect and allowing the coil spring to penetrate into tougher ground conditions. The I-2100 employs the heavy frame design used for the rubber suspension I-series machines for increased weight per blade and to manage the additional vibration created by this second generation Coil-Tech. True to the Independent series design this machine is able to cover an acre per hour per foot - a 41' machine will cover 41 acres per hour.
