It gives me great pleasure to welcome visitors and residents to Snuneymuxw traditional territory. We are pleased to share the beauty and bounty of the land and resources that our Snuneymuxw people have called home since time immemorial.

Snuneymuxw First Nation is located in the centre of the vibrant Coast Salish territory on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Fraser River in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Snuneymuxw is one of the largest First Nations in B.C. with a population of approximately 2,000 Snuneymuxw citizens.

Snuneymuxw territory encompasses one of the most productive and resource rich areas at the heart of the Salish Sea. We are one of the few First Nations that have a pre-Confederation treaty with the Crown – called the Douglas Treaty of 1854. In this context, Snuneymuxw First Nation is striving to create opportunities that respect the Douglas Treaty, fulfill Snuneymuxw principles and potential as individuals and families.

Snuneymuxw perceive tourism and tourism-related activities as being central to the reconciliation and recognition of Snuneymuxw culture and way of life. It is also a provision of significant employment and educational opportunities for the Snuneymuxw people and local community. We invite our visitors to have the opportunity to learn more about our shared history, Snuneymuxw way of life and our collective vision for the future.

THE BASTION STANDS TALL Nanaimo’s iconic Bastion was built in 1853 by the Hudson’s Bay Company and is the last of the original free-standing HBC bastions. Operated as an exhibit by Nanaimo Museum, it is open for tours daily during the summer season. Every day at noon during the summer, museum staff fire the historical cannons next to the Bastion. www.nanaimomuseum.ca

WESTWOOD AWAITS Westwood Lake Park is a well-loved and well-used nature park up in the hills. Last year, in the News Bulletin’s Best of the City survey, Westwood was chosen the best place to walk, jog, hike, mountain bike, walk a dog and swim outdoors.

The 6.2-kilometre trail around the lake features gorgeous views and links to other trails. The lake is popular with swimmers, anglers and paddlers.

Lifeguards keep an eye on things in the summer.

3.

WATCH WHALES Vancouver Island Whale Watch is a new business advertising sustainable whale watching tours. Take a three-to-five hour excursion to view orcas or humpback whales in the strait and learn from a marine naturalist. Sightings are guaranteed. www.vancouverislandwhalewatch.com

NIGHT MARKET SETS UP SHOP Nanaimo's summer nights will get lively with a new market downtown.

The Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce has worked with the city and downtown merchants and potential vendors to start up a summertime night market.

Nanaimo’s Commercial Street Night Market will run every Thursday for 11 weeks, from June 21 until Aug. 30. Commercial Street will be closed to traffic between Terminal Avenue and Church and Chapel streets. Museum Way, Wharf and Skinner streets will also be blocked off. Vendor booths will operate from 5-9 p.m. and there will be food trucks and entertainment for visitors and passersby.

“They'll experience the night life of Commercial Street and find out that it's safe, it's clean, it's fun and it's a great place to be,” says Kim Smythe, chamber president and CEO. www.nanaimochamber.bc.ca

ROAM THE MUSEUM Learn about how it all began as the Nanaimo Museum offers a look at the city’s origins as a Snuneymuxw village before the Hudson’s Bay Company set up a trading post in the 1850s. Exhibits detail the city’s transition from coal mining to forestry and beyond, and offer perspectives on Canadian history and culture. The museum also offers guided tours of landmarks. www.nanaimomuseum.ca

SAMPLE SPIRITS Arbutus Distillery is continually creating at its Boxwood Road location. And Arbutus doesn’t just sell its spirits and send people on their way – a lounge features an everchanging list of cocktails. http://arbutusdistillery.com

FROLIC IN THE FLOWERS Lotus pinnatus, Nanaimo's official floral emblem, is found in very few locations in Canada. Look for it on the Harewood Plains between White Rapids Road and McKeown Way.

TENNIS ANYONE? Beban and Bowen parks both feature tennis courts that operate on a first-come, first-serve basis.

HAVE FUN AT THE FARM The region has dozens of farms offering all sorts of fresh goods right at the farm gate as well as experiences that educate visitors on how the products are made. ADMIRE ART Local artists provide galleries with a variety of styles and mediums. Visit Nanaimo Art Gallery, Nanaimo Arts Council, Hill's Native Art, Golden Otter Gallery, Electric Umbrella, Gallery Row, Art 10 Gallery, Gallery Merrick, Blessings, the Urban Art Gallery and others. The city's public art program rotates new pieces into Nanaimo every year, mostly at Maffeo Sutton Park.

SEE ARTISTS AT WORK The Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour keeps expanding in scale. Last year 85 artists displayed and demonstrated their work at 65 sites across the island.

ROLL A STRIKE Spare some time to throw some strikes before you split.

Brechin Lanes on East Wellington Road offers five-pin bowling www.brechinlanes.ca and Splitsville Entertainment on Calder Road offers 10-pin fun. www.splitsville.ca

GO FOR A SWIM Take a dip, outdoors or indoors. At Beban Park, you’ll find a pirate-themed pool with a waterslide, leisure pool and interactive play features. Nanaimo Aquatic Centre on Third Street boasts a 52-metre pool, three water slides, a leisure pool, wave pool and lazy river. Both facilities also offer steam rooms, hot tubs, and weight rooms.

Kin Pool at Bowen Park has public swimming most afternoons until the start of September.

Westood Lake Park is Nanaimo’s favourite place for lake swimming; the City of Nanaimo will have lifeguards there from the start of summer through to Labour Day.

READ A GOOD BOOK Stop by Harbourfront Library, Nanaimo North Library or Wellington Library, which just opened last year at Country Club Centre. For used books, shop at Literacy Central Vancouver Island and be sure to check out the Rotary Used Book Sale at Nanaimo North Town Centre twice a year.

CLIMB A MOUNTAIN Mount Benson isn’t just the backdrop of Nanaimo, it’s a place that’s worth trying to reach the top.

It’s a bit of a grind – set aside five to seven hours for a round trip, and expect some steep spots, but the reward is Nanaimo’s best views. Start your hike at the trailhead to the Witchcraft Lake Regional Trail on Benson View Road.

There are plenty of other worthwhile hikes in and around Nanaimo, too. Ammonite Falls is popular; the trailhead is on Jameson Road with parking at nearby Creekside Place.

GO FOR A WALK Get outdoors and see Nanaimo at your own pace.

Nanaimo offers parks and trails to view wildlife, wildflowers and breathe clean air. Start with Cottle Lake (Linley Valley), Neck Point, Piper’s Lagoon, Buttertubs Marsh, Colliery Dam Park, Cable Bay and Jack Point, or paved multi-use trails, such as the Parkway Trail and E&N Trail.

SEE SALMON'S LIFE CYCLE Late September to December is the best time to visit the Nanaimo River Hatchery, but juvenile salmon in the outdoor channels can be seen until May. The public is welcome to use the trails year-round. Take Beck Road to Rugby Road to find the hatchery. www.nanaimoriverhatchery.ca The Millstone River salmon side channel located in Bowen Park is a perfect place for a stroll in nature and to learn more about the environment. Ducks, otters and beaver inhabit the channel year-round.

TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH Bungy jumping, a zipline, a big swing and an aerial adventure course can be found in the woods at WildPlay Element Park on Nanaimo River Road. www.wildplay.com/nanaimo

SEE A PARK PERFORMANCE Nanaimo parks will be alive with the sound of music this summer. The City of Nanaimo presents it annual Concerts in the Park, a free music series, during July and August at Maffeo Sutton Park and the Bowen Park amphitheatre.

“I love just having the community come together and having it available and having it free is just icing on the cake,” says Deborah Beck, city recreation coordinator. “It just brings this energy into our parks and open spaces.” www.nanaimo.ca

EVERYONE LOVES A FAIR The 124th Vancouver Island Exhibition is coming up Aug. 17-19 and a lot of folks are already working hard to ensure this year’s exhibition is a success.

Every year, the VIEX brings back old favourites and introduces some new attractions. The scope continues to grow and change, but organizers say they will never forget their primary purpose is to bring the entire community together to present and encourage awareness of agriculture and to demonstrate how it affects our everyday lives. ENTER THE DRAGON The Nanaimo Save-On-Foods Dragonboat Festival makes a lot of special moments in the harbour every year. The festival is a fundraiser for breast cancer treatment and support, but the racing is competitive.

“It’s great being out there crossing the finish line giving it everything you’ve got and panting at the end and feeling like you accomplished something,” says paddler Sasha Chernenkoff.

SEE IF THE SILLY BOATS ARE SEAWORTHY The Silly Boat Regatta doesn’t feature Nanaimo’s fastest boats, but it’s always a blast, nevertheless. The annual fundraiser for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre draws thousands of people to Maffeo Sutton Park every year. Teams construct boats by hand on site at the park and race the same day.

“I mean, it’s all fun and for charity, but it’s still a great feeling of winning,” says Connor Wirachowsky, one of the McDonald’s team members who took first place last year. The 2018 Silly Boat Regatta will be July 15. http://sillyboat.com

If you only see or do one of the 101 things on this list, it’s got to be experiencing the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race.

This year’s great race will be held July 22, when skippers piloting boats made from bathtubs will attempt to navigate a 58-kilometre course starting and ending at Maffeo Sutton Park.

The bathtub race is the centrepiece event of the Nanaimo Marine Festival July 20-22, a whole weekend of activities in and around the downtown, including concerts, street fair, vendors, a kids' zone, beer garden, sailpast parade, fireworks show and more. www.bathtubbing.com

WALK THE HARBOURFRONT WALKWAY Nanaimo’s most popular attraction with locals and tourists alike is the waterfront walkway. Beginning at the Gabriola ferry terminal, the walk winds through the Boat Basin and along the quay, where you can grab a coffee or an ice cream before continuing to Maffeo Sutton Park and then as far as the Nanaimo Yacht Club. Buskers are often found performing along the walkway.

TRY CROSS ON THE ROCK Vancouver Island has emerged as a hot spot for cyclocross, a discipline of bike racing involving speed, stamina and a willingness to take on obstacles and maybe get a little bit muddy. The Steve Smith Bike Park opened last year in Nanaimo’s Beban Park. SHOW YOUR PRIDE Nanaimo Pride events happen in early June, timed to be a sort of kickoff to West Coast Pride events. Every year Nanaimo's event expands and becomes more inclusive.

The parade will wind its way up Commercial Street and other nearby streets and cross over Nanaimo’s pride crosswalks at Commercial and Bastion streets.

The pride flag will be raised at city hall on June 6 and there will be dances the next two nights leading up to the parade and festival June 9 and an after-party at Evolve nightclub.

DIVE DEEP The late Jacques Cousteau was said to have referred to Nanaimo as second only to the Red Sea in terms of the best temperate water diving in the world and there are plenty of good dive spots off the shore.

FIND SANCTUARY Some of Nanaimo’s most devoted stewards of the great outdoors are those who look after the Morrell Nature Sanctuary. The land encompasses 113 hectares of mature second-growth rain-shadow forest with more than 11 kilometres of maintained trails. There are interpretive tours teaching children and adults about the trees, plants, birds and animal life, or people are welcome to take self-guided tours if they prefer. A fun thing to do in the sanctuary for all ages, especially the young at heart, is the Yew Loop Trail, where people are encouraged to try to spy all the gome homes that are placed throughout this trail. CATCH A GAME

Golf can be played pretty much year-round in balmy Nanaimo. Courses include Nanaimo Golf Club with views of Departure Bay, Gabriola, Cottonwood, Fairwinds, Pryde Vista, Eagle Quest, Winchelsea View and Beban Park pitchand-putt.

Nanaimo’s teams appreciate fan support, and will give their best efforts game in, game out. The Nanaimo Clippers junior A and Nanaimo Buccaneers junior B hockey clubs start their seasons in September, with the Clippers playing out of Frank Crane Arena and the Bucs playing at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The V.I. Raiders junior football team is defending B.C. champion and plays home games Saturdays at Caledonia Park. High school football will start in September at turf fields at Merle Logan Field and NDSS Community Field. Summers are busy with lacrosse, as the Nanaimo Timbermen senior A and senior B squads plays their games at Frank Crane Arena. At Serauxmen Stadium, the premier baseball league Nanaimo Pirates will have several home doubleheaders over the next two months. College sports will start in late summer with soccer at Merle Logan Field on weekend afternoons, followed by basketball and volleyball in the fall at the Vancouver Island University gym on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.
