A compelling package thanks to above average handling, fuel economy, interior refinement and design

Choosing a vehicle in the red-hot compact utility space can be a bit overwhelming as every automaker has something to offer but there are some vehicles that stand out for specific reasons. The question buyers need to ask themselves is what features are important to choosing the final product?

This brings us to the Mazda CX-5, as a solid choice for anyone’s money for a family utility.

Even though it might not look like many changes were made for the 2018 model, it was substantially updated both inside and out to provide the latest technology and driving dynamics. This is the one area that Mazda truly excels, road presence and feedback to the driver. There are many reliable and larger utilities in this class but Mazda brings class-leading driving dynamics to the table. Updates for 2018 include revised body stiffness by 15% allowing the engineers to adapt the suspension to be more comfortable over rougher roads. If the body is stiffer, it allows the suspension to do more work providing a better balance of comfort and handling, plus added sound insulation make the vehicle quieter. On the handling front, Mazda has included

a system called G-Vectoring on every all wheel drive (AWD) model. Unlike many competitors that use a small amount of front wheel braking to help the vehicle pivot through a corner, the Mazda system uses engine braking, or reducing the ignition spark to produce up to 3.6kg of force to the front wheels. Just think about driving down a twisty road, by adding a bit of weight to the front wheels helps the car rotate, this was typically done with a dab of the brake, now the car does it by itself using engine torque; a simple approach that no other brand has utilized.

As mentioned the exterior looks similar to the outgoing model but parked next to each other the keen eye would spot some difference. Enhancements include standard LED headlamps and rear tail lamps for better vision and a power tailgate that starts on the middle GS trim. All trim levels get alloy wheels starting at 17-inches and up to 19-inches on the top GT trim.

Another area that Mazda excels is interior refinement including above-average materials and layout that look class-above.

The cabin of the CX-5, especially higher-end trim levels could be mistaken for a premium product, it is that good. The main difference between Mazda and the competition is

the use of a centre-mounted screen in the dash that is controlled by a controller wheel between the front seats. The look and design of this system is similar to some Audi products, so the CX-5 is in good company. The centre screen is seven inches on all models but the top GT trim includes a 10-speaker Bose stereo. Unfortunately Mazda does not include Android Auto or Apple Car Play in its products but the pressure is on for all manufacturers to include this technology, so as they say, stay tuned...

The good news is that the latest CX-5 does get two new USB ports in the centre armrest for connectivity and charging.

The rest of the interior has nicely finished switches and buttons with classy backlighting.

The seats and dash are offered with a twotone design that makes the interior pop, plus the areas covered in soft-touch materials are first rate.

One thing to check is the amount of space needed for a family vehicle. The CX-5 has a nimble design with accompanying handling but some might find the back seat a bit small.

The good news is that couples or a single person looking for a smaller footprint, on the road, will find the CX-5 a nice balance of utility and city maneuverability.

Power comes from two engines. The 2.0 4cylinder base model is equipped with front wheel drive (FWD) and a manual transmission. Power is 155hp for this trim.

Other models get a 2.5L version with standard automatic transmission and 187hp.

The 2.5-liter inline-four has been revised with cylinder deactivation that should improve fuel efficiency. This engine can be ordered with FWD or AWD, higher trims get AWD as standard equipment. By now most consumers have heard of Mazda’s Skyactiv

technology and much of this is centered on engine technology that produces powerful engines and incredible fuel efficiency. The 2.5L engine with AWD is rated at a solid 10.2L/100km in the city and 8.3L on the highway.

Advanced safety features are a major selling feature today. The CX-5 is available with forward collision warning with autonomous braking, plus lane keep assist but these features are included in a package that is only available on the middle ($2,400) and ($1,600) top trim. Some competitors do offer this as standard equipment, something Mazda could work on.

With a starting price of $24,900, the base model is a value leader. The base 2.5L starts at $26,300 and the base AWD model at $28,300. The top GT trim with the advanced safety features comes in at $36,300, a very competitive spread in pricing.

Overall the Mazda CX-5 is a compelling package thanks to above average handling, fuel economy, interior refinement and design.

There is a diesel engine in the works for the 2019 model year but Mazda has yet to release details on the timeline for that even more efficient option. That will be worthy of a whole new review.

The benefits of a lighter and simpler power source seemed obvious and more than 100 companies, including General Motors, Ford, Daimler-Benz and Toyota secured a licensing arrangement with NSU. One of the smaller companies interested in rotary power was Toyo Kogyo. By the early 1960s, its fledgling Mazda automotive division was mainly building three-wheeled commercial trucks. Yet, it was among the few companies to eventually be granted a licence to develop and ultimately manufacture the rotary. By early 1963, Mazda engineers were busy refining the Wankel design. Among the many problems was wear and tear on the rotor housing as well as heavy oil consumption, both of which severely reduced engine life. That fall, two rotary prototypes were driven from the Hiroshima factory to be displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show. To showcase the revolutionary engine, Mazda came up with a slick two-seater sports coupe, the Cosmo 110S. Although the press and the public were impressed, it would take a further four years to ready the car

In principle, the internal-combustion engine has changed very little since the beginning.

The assorted internal parts used in today’s powerplants would easily be recognized by those early inventors who struggled to breathe life into their four-wheeled wonders. Then there’s Mazda and its Cosmo. The rotary engine was - and still is - one of the most unusual forms of internal combustion. It is tiny, powerful and makes an unmistakable buzzing noise at full song.

For decades, Mazda has been developing and refining rotary-engined vehicles that operate like no other. Where some manufacturers tried and eventually abandoned this unique method of propulsion, Mazda managed to turn the rotary into a commercially viable proposition.

The unique powerplant was invented in the mid-1950s by Felix Wankel, who was working for the German NSU automaker. The engine’s significance was its simplicity. It was devoid of the usual mechanical hardware found in traditional engines: valves; cylinder heads; bearings, etc. Instead, it used a triangular-shaped rotor housed within a small, barrel-shaped chamber.

The Cosmo beat the NSU Ro80 to market by three months, earning it the title of the world’s first production rotary. To go with its thoroughly modern look, the rear-wheel-drive car featured advancements such as a semi-independent rear suspension, front disc brakes, adjustable steering column and a complete set of gauges. The Cosmo also delivered spirited performance that matched its sporty good looks. Shifting via a fourspeed manual transmission, the car could sprint to 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than nine seconds and reach a top speed of about 125 mph (200 km-h).

These numbers are actually similar to Mazda’s latter-day sports car, the non-rotary Miata. Mazda sold just 343 of its $4,100 Cosmo coupes in the first year, all to Japanese customers. An upgraded model that went on sale in late 1968 came with a stronger 128-horse rotary as well as a five-speed gearbox, 15-inch wheels, power brakes and available air conditioning. In four years, fewer than 1,200 right-hand-drive-only cars found new homes, mostly in Japan although a few 110-horsepower export versions were shipped to Great Britain, continental Europe and Canada. Having proved its worth, although still suffering from premature engine-failure issues, Mazda retired the Cosmo after 1972. The company instead chose to install the rotary on higher-volume four- and five-seat coupes, sedans as well as pickups before again focusing on sports cars with the enormously successful RX line which continued in one way, shape or form until the mid-1990s. After an eight-year hiatus, Mazda returned to rotary power with its 2004 RX-8, only for it to eventually cease production. The rotary engine evolved over the years, but the idea of a unique, fun-to-drive car with a unique, fun-to-flog engine - began by the Cosmo - continued on.

Just 343 Cosmos were sold in the first year, all to customers in Japan, but rotary power had finally taken off.

Being the best at anything produces challenges ...

An athlete needs to stay on top of their game as younger, hungrier players come onto the scene. The same is true for the auto industry.

For example, the Toyota Camry is the best selling mid-sized sedan in North America so coming out with a new version means that the engineers, designers and executives have to stay focused, and stronger, than the competition. In todays market it isn’t just other mid-sized sedans, like the Honda Accord, that Toyota needs to keep at bay, rather the massive onslaught of crossover vehicles that are scooping up the majority of buyers. With this shift in the market happening so quickly, Toyota threw everything, well almost everything at this stylish new sedan.

The basis, literally the foundation, for this new Camry is what Toyota calls its New Global Architecture, a lighter and more rigid platform to base this and other Toyota products on. The advantages are improved handling and fuel economy. The next, and most noticeable is the dynamic styling Toyota hopes will bring back existing Camry buyers but more importantly younger Gen X families looking for something sporty, yet practical. To appeal to traditional Camry enthusiasts there is a line of Camry’s that have the letter “L” in the name, from L to LE and XLE with a hybrid version of both the LE and XLE. Then there are the much more dynamic and sportier “S” models called SE and XSE, these too are available as a hybrid. The

easiest way to remember the difference is that the cars with L in the name are more luxurious looking and feeling, the cars with an S in the name are sportier. This difference in design isn’t subtle, rather bold, with the L models featuring a smooth, wide grill and flowing lines. The S models come with bolder spoilers, bigger air intakes, larger, available 19-inch wheels and even two-tone paint. As bold as the S models are, some might find the design trying too hard to be dynamic, where the L cars look more cohesive in design. The nice thing is that the hybrid models follow this same formula so you can choose a mild or wild looking car with the same, great efficient hybrid system to save money at the pumps. All Camry models come with standard LED headlamps, LED tail lamps and side marker lights incorporated into the side mirrors.

The dash is rather futuristic looking with a sweeping line that crosses the cockpit area into the centre console. This unique look is modern and houses the new 7-inch or optional 8-inch display audio system.

The top models get the larger screen and on-board navigation, where the lower trim levels rely on Toyota’s Entune software to pair with the driver’s phone to provide navigation data. This is a step forward in terms of connectivity but most other car companies are integrating Apple Car Play and Android Auto into the radio head unit, Toyota still has not incorporated this technology so it will be interesting to see if the public will embrace Entune.

The interior of these two diverging lines is also evident. The S cars are available with a bold, bright red leather interior, where the L cars revert back to traditional colours.

Space is better inside thanks to a longer wheelbase but the seats sit a little bit lower to accommodate the sportier and lower roofline. There is plenty of room in the back seat and buyers shopping for a compact or mid-size utilities should try this new Camry because the seating position and legroom is often better in a sedan than an SUV. For hybrid owners, the rear seats now fold down, as the engineers were able to place the

As stylish as this new Camry is, including an optional, and massive moon roof, there are two notable omissions and they include an available heated steering wheel and heated rear seats. Once an owner has had these features it is often hard to revert back to a car without them. Toyota executives are quick to point out that these features can be added in the future, hopefully soon.

The longer wheelbase and new platform come together to provide a much-improved driving experience. The steering is more direct now, the road noise is reduced and power is up for all models making this a sedan that looks dynamic and backs it up.

The biggest difference to the drive is the new 8-speed automatic. Other brands have looked to continuously variable transmissions for improved fuel economy but Toyota can provide this with the kind of drive that only a traditional automatic can deliver.

As competitors have moved to smaller turbocharged 4-cylinder engines to replace V6 engines or larger motors, Toyota has stuck with proven designs that the public will recognize and more importantly deliver bulletproof driving for years to come. The base model comes with a 2.5L 4-cylinder, which might appear to be the same as last year, however this is an all-new engine with 203hp. There is still a 3.5L V6 available and this engine pumps out a healthy 301hp. Both of these new engines has what Toyota calls its D4S system capable of running on the more efficient Atkinson cycle with direct injection or these engines can switch to regular port fuel injection for a smoother idle. This is the best Toyota Camry yet and now it is designed for a wider range of buyers from traditional Toyota fans to younger professionals looking to roll up to work in a sporty sedan with attitude.

The Camry has jumped in price, for example, the mainline LE is $27,490 and the SE is $27,890, with the top XSE V6 model at almost $40,000. One thing to keep in mind is that Toyota has jammed a whole lot more technology and safety equipment into this car as standard equipment including the Toyota Safety Sense P system that incorporates forward collision warning with autonomous braking on all trims, plus LED headlamps and a vastly improved interior.

Warren Avis landed at airports across the United States and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. Sometimes he would have to walk for miles from the airport terminal before he would find a ride to pick him up. Airport ground transportation? Unthinkable.

And if you wonder how Avis, the man, created Avis, the car-rental giant, you only need to look back to the early 1940s to see one frustrated man with a brilliant idea.

Captain Warren Avis, a military pilot during the Second World War, knew something about air travel and he knew something about cars. As a Ford dealer in suburban Detroit, Mich., Avis valued customer service and he knew a bad deal when he saw one. So, naturally, as a pilot, Avis continually became frustrated when ground transportation was not available at airports when he returned home from missions overseas. After the war, he realized other travelers thought the same way. He had a solution: car rentals. Although Hertz was already offering a transportation service, its branches were located in major cities, but not at their airports, which were often in the middle of nowhere. Avis was among the first to foresee the rapid development of commercial aviation following the Second World War. He reasoned that the growth in air travel would lead to a need for some means of transportation once people had landed at their destinations. So, before Christmas in late December of 1946, with $10,000 of his own money and $75,000 borrowed against his name, Avis began his car rental business: Avis Airlines Rent-a-Car System. The company was the world’s first car rental operation located inside the boundaries of an airport. Almost simultaneously, an Avis location opened at Miami International Airport, then the country’s busiest rent-a-car market. He wouldn’t know it, but Avis was about to lay the groundwork for an entire industry. Business and vacation travelers went crazy. The idea of a national airport rental-car system was a valid one.

But could it be that simple? Step off a plane and rent a car, then return it at some point in the future to the same location? The simplicity of the idea was ingenious. Could it work? Avis expanded his business at a steady pace primarily by licensing local independent operators to do business under the Avis name at airports. New York, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, Los Angeles and Houston soon joined the Avis System. By 1948, system operations were opening in downtown locations to serve hotels and office buildings and the word “Airlines” was dropped from the company’s name. By 1953, Avis launched franchise operations of Avis in Europe,

Canada and Mexico. “I didn’t think it was anything other than giving the customer an option I never had as a traveler,” Avis once said. But Avis went one step further, introducing a number of innovative business practices that would also help the industry.

He would pioneer national franchise licensing, corporate credit cards and better customer service practices. All of these business firsts became the gold standard in the industry. Interestingly, Avis himself wouldn’t last long in the industry he helped develop. In 1954, he sold the company to a Boston, Mass.-based financier and the owner of U-Drivit Corporation, a car rental company, for $ 8 million.

Subsequently, that company opened a number

of outlets throughout the United States and introduced the innovative concept of a nationwide one-way car rental system. Customers could rent a car at one place and leave it at their destination with no need to return it. From the 1950s on, Avis changed hands many times as it was repeatedly sold and bought by a number of companies. In addition, the company entered into alliances with other car-rental companies in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland and Scotland.

In 1973, Avis launched its innovative Wizard reservation system, the company’s cornerstone technology. The company continued to change ownership through the 1970s and ‘80s, becoming employee-owned in 1987. That same year, Avis introduced the Roving Rapid Return, a handheld computer terminal allowing customers to bypass the Avis counter. In 2000, the company introduced Avis Interactive, the first Internet-based reporting system in the car-rental industry. Two locations became thousands of locations in 160 countries.

And as for Mr. Avis? He faded away . . . almost. In 1985, he joined a group of investors who wanted to buy Avis Inc. from Beatrice Companies, which put it up for sale. But the price had jumped to $400 million. He eventually turned it down. He didn’t need the hassle. His legacy was already cemented in every rental counter at every airport in virtually every city in the world.
