Neighbourhoods

Surrey is home to six distinct town centres CLOVERDALE: Settled in the mid- to late-1800s, Cloverdale grew from a largely rural and agricultural community into a bustling hub of commercial activity due in large part to its strategic location and connections to the railway. Today, Cloverdale, which is home to Surrey Museum and Archives, unique heritage buildings, and a quaint “Main Street” retains much of its historic ambiance. Each year, the Cloverdale Fairgrounds plays host to the Cloverdale Rodeo.

FLEETWOOD: The community of Fleetwood is named in honour of Lance Corporal Arthur Thomas Fleetwood, who died in the First World War. In 2008, Thomas Fleetwood was memorialized with a statue in front of the Fleetwood Community Centre and Library. In addition to the Fleetwood Community Centre, recreational facilities in Fleetwood include the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex and Fleetwood Park, which offers a variety of activities, including walking trails, gardens and playing fields.

GUILDFORD: Early settlement in Guildford occurred in the Township of Port Kells which, in 1891, was connected by rail service to New Westminster. Since then, development has predominantly been centred around 152 Street and 104 Avenue in the area of Guildford Town Centre Mall. Businesses located in this area have good

access to the freeway. More recently, residential development has occurred in the neighbourhood of Fraser Heights overlooking the Fraser River.

Tynehead Regional Park offers natural walking trails, picnic areas and dog off-leash areas, and is home to the Tynehead Fish Hatchery. Also, the new Surrey Bend Regional Park provides access to the Fraser River for non-motorized boating activity.

NEWTON: Newton is named after settler E.J. Newton who, in 1886, settled at what is now 72nd Avenue and 124th Street. The BC Electric Railway stimulated Newton’s growth and helped to establish the corner of 72nd Avenue and King George Boulevard as a town centre. Newton also includes the Historic Village of Sullivan, located at 152nd Street and 64th Avenue. Today, Newton is home to a variety of educational, recreational and cultural facilities, including The Bell Centre for Performing Arts, Newton Cultural Centre, Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Newton Athletic Park. The community also plays host to the annual Vaisakhi parade, which attracts close to 200,000 people each year.

WHALLEY/CITY CENTRE: The community takes its name from Arthur Whalley, who settled near the corner of King George Boulevard and 108th Avenue in 1925. The area, then known

Vaisakhi Festival

Parade springs to life in Surrey

The annual Vaisakhi parade is the only event in Surrey that comes close to attracting almost the entire city’s population - more than 500,000 people.

There are several reasons why it has become such a big event. Surrey’s South Asian population continues to grow, while the Vancouver population does not.

As well, the Surrey parade is more central and thus attracts people from surrounding areas - including New Westminster, Richmond and Abbotsford - all of which have sizable South Asian populations.

Another reason is that organizers have, particularly recently, worked hard to make it more of a community event, inviting people of all backgrounds. This generous invitation has been accepted by many, and people from all religious backgrounds have felt welcomed.

One of the best-known tenets of the Sikh religion is the feeding of people in the community kitchen. On Vaisakhi day, food is available along the street, bringing the practice of giving free food out to the masses.

Given the growing popularity of Indian food in the area, and the many fine restaurants that serve it, this proves to be yet another attraction.

There are important points that all of us, no matter our ethnic or religious backgrounds, can draw from the celebration. One is that there are many people in this city who are different from us - yet in many ways are the same.

It is important to remember the human traits we have in common, while recognizing the differences, which need to be respected, not undermined.

We can also honour the founding of the Sikh religion. Sikhs are not afraid to stand up and be proud of who they are. The same can hold true of people from other religions.

Vaisakhi is a reminder of that.

Museum Expansion

Expanded Museum of Surrey set to reopen The expanded Museum of Surrey is set to reopen in September 2018.

The expansion project will add 12,000 square feet of space to the museum’s current footprint, tripling the size of the Kids Explore Zone, creating an Indigenous Hall, to be completed by collaborating with Surrey’s Indigenous communities, and making room for a feature gallery that will be able to host national and international exhibitions.

The museum, which first opened in 2005, has been closed for reconstruction since July 2017.

Early that year, the city revealed a new museum logo and name – Museum of Surrey.

“We really want to stress that we are not just a dynamic and fun museum, but we are a museum that connects the people of Surrey with the stories of Surrey,” said museum manager Lynn Saffery.

The expansion will include atrium space for cultural celebrations, community gatherings and special-event receptions.

As a part of the expansion project, the 126-yearold Anniedale School and the 1881 Townhall will be moved to the museum site to join the Anderson Cabin and create a “Heritage Campus.” The campus will also include the Surrey Archives, which operates out of the 1912 Municipal Hall, the Cloverdale Library and Veteran’s Square.

Heritage Railway

Surrey’s history showcased on Heritage Rail rides

Surrey’s Heritage Rail offers riders a journey back in time.

Every spring and summer, the cars operated by Fraser Valley Heritage Rail Society roll down a track from a station in the heart of Cloverdale to one at Sullivan — a 55-minute round trip.

A restored interurban rail car is put into service for the pay-per-ride attraction, which operates from May to September, with some special events at Halloween and Christmas.

The BC Electric Railway, or BCER, was incorporated in 1897 in England. A Fraser Valley line was completed in 1910, and it ran from downtown Vancouver out to Chilliwack, with stops in the Whalley, Newton, Sullivan and Cloverdale areas of Surrey.

“There were up to four complete round-trip runs each day,” according to a post on the society’s website (fvhrs.org). “Carrying not only passengers, it also provided a fast method for moving freight, the mail and gossip.”

The original Fraser Valley rail line still exists in the valley, from New Westminster as far east as Chilliwack.

In 2018, Surrey’s Heritage Rail operates on Saturday and Sunday from May 5 to Sept. 30, from

There’s one thing Surrey has plenty of, and that’s bicycle trails for everybody from the casual pedaler to the daredevil trail hound.

Surrey has almost 90 kilometres of greenways and more than 350 kilometres planned. Check out the city’s Greenways Master Plan online at surrey.ca/culture-recreation/3114.aspx.

Surrey Bend Regional Park. The kids will love it.

Meanwhile, there are many forest trails to ride along in Tynehead Park and Green Timbers Urban Forest.

A tried-and-true, easy bike trip for families on a sunny afternoon is the Barnston Island bike loop.

It’s flat, paved and there generally aren’t too many cars along this roughly 10-kilometre trip.

For those who like to live on edge, riding hard on forested paths, the Invergarry Bike Park in North Surrey offers some outstanding cycling, as does South Surrey’s Stokes Pit at 28th Avenue off 192nd Street.

There aren’t any stores, either, so bring water to drink and something to eat. There’s a nice little park for a picnic at the northwest tip of the island.

Fishing

Fishing in Surrey: where to cast a line When it comes to sports fishing, Surrey isn’t typically the first place that springs to mind.

Most people head to interior lakes for a chance to catch a rainbow trout. If they’re fishing for salmon, they often look east to the Stave, Chehalis, Harrison or Chilliwack rivers. Or the Fraser, of course, maybe chucking a line in at Derby Reach or one of the popular sand bars east of Mission.

It’s no secret the Fraser is one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world. The wise angler realizes that before the fish reach those other popular Fraser Valley rivers to spawn, they must first pass by Surrey and North Delta, which together have almost 30 kilometres of Fraser River shoreline.

There are some pullouts along River Road which are popular, particularly when the pink salmon are running, which is every second year (They’re plentiful, and great fun to catch).

But pink salmon or no, Surrey has a couple good locations from which to fish for pretty much all species of salmon, cutthroat trout, Dolly Vardens and the mighty sturgeon.

Like all tidal and freshwater fishing locations in B.C., these are subject to seasonal closures, species closures and other restrictions and a smart angler – one who doesn’t want to get hit

with a fine, anyway – regularly consults the provincial government fishing synopses (Env.gov.bc. ca/fw/fish/regulations/#Synopsis) and the DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) website to stay abreast of the regulations. Remember, it’s barbless hooks for all salmon fishing in B.C. The best known is the Brownsville Bar, also known as Whalley Beach, at the end of Old Yale Road. It’s a nice sandy bar, roughly 300 metres long, nestled between the SkyTrain Bridge and Pattullo Bridge, with ample space to chuck a spoon or still fish, while watching the working river.

Some bring a folding chair and thermos of coffee. And the thing is, people actually catch fish there. Some fellows have sworn by it for decades.

To get there, follow Old Yale Road toward the bridges, and the rest is self-evident. Another good place to fish from along Surrey’s Fraser shoreline is the Surrey Public Wharf a ways upstream, at the north end of 130th Street (11731 130th Street). It gets you far enough out to reach the fish and there’s parking available at this recently renovated dock.

For both these locations, you’ll need a tidal water licence, as elsewhere on the Fraser upstream to Mission’s CPR railway bridge.

So that’s the Fraser, your best bet for a fishing thrill in Surrey, but certainly not your only one.

Surrey has about 1,400 kilometres of streams containing five species of salmon and trout. Most are small creeks that should be left alone, as local hatcheries work hard to bring them back to their former glory.

As for lakes and ponds, Latimer Lake (Stokes Pit Park) in South Surrey was once a popular spot to fish for rainbow trout, but it has dried up into smaller weed-choked pools and is not much use for fishing any more. It’s not even listed in the freshwater fishing synopsis.

The big attraction for trout fishing in Surrey is Green Timbers Lake, stocked twice a year with rainbow trout. It’s easily accessed, open year round, has a wooden fishing platform and is a great place for a beginner to learn how to cast.

The lake also contains some brood fish, large rainbows that were used for breeding and introduced to give a lucky angler a special thrill. Some years ago, a young boy landed a 12-pounder there.

The “keep” limit at this lake, accessed by the park entrance in the 14600-block of 100th Avenue, is two fish daily.

Anglers also like to wet a line at Surrey’s three other iconic rivers, the Nicomekl and Serpentine, which flow into Mud Bay, and the Little Campbell River, flowing into Semiahmoo Bay.

These three rivers can be productive for cutthroat trout, coho, spring salmon (Chinook) and even steelhead, depending on the time of year, but be aware of the somewhat complex regulations governing these three rivers. Their tidal boundaries are the Burlington Northern Railway bridges and federal tidal regulations apply below them.

Surrey hosts big Canada Day celebration on July 1

Serena Ryder and Brett Kissel will co-headline Surrey’s large Canada Day celebration in 2018.

The July 1 event will again take place at Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre in Cloverdale.

Admission is free at the annual flag-waving party, which features an amusement park, midway games and interactive activities for all ages.

The 2018 gathering is expected to be the largest Canada Day event in Western Canada, welcoming over 100,000 throughout the Serena day, according to event Ryder planners with the City of Surrey.

“Our annual Canada Day celebration draws record crowds from throughout the Lower Mainland to experience the best in Canadian entertainment here in Surrey,” said Mayor Linda Hepner.

“This year I am proud to present our first ever co-headline performance. I want to extend an open invitation to our residents and visitors to come celebrate our national pride and community

Annual Cloverdale Rodeo pulls in crowds One of Surrey’s largest annual events gives people reason to “get back to country” on the May long weekend.

The four-day Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair is one of the most popular family-friendly events in all of Western Canada.

Top riders from across Canada and the U.S. compete in a number of events in five rodeo performances, held at the Stetson Bowl at Cloverdale Fairgrounds.

The invitational rodeo features Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding, Ladies Barrel Racing, Mutton Bustin’, a clown act and the Bit-ABling grand entry team.

The fair, meanwhile, is filled with amusement rides, live music, food

and other attractions, including the West Fine Art Show, freestyle skateboarding, a lumberjack show, an Agri Zone, Art Knapp’s Outdoor Living showcase, fireworks, a Rib Fest and more.

Every year, close to 85,000 people flock to the popular fair throughout the four-day affair, and some 23,000 fans take in the rodeo.

The history of the event dates back to 1888, when the first meeting of the fair was held. In March of that year, notice was given that the “District of Surrey Agricultural Association” was incorporated as an association under the Agricultural Societies Act. In September of 1888, the first fair was held in the Surrey Municipal Hall and grounds located at Surrey Centre. The fair was moved to the present site in Cloverdale in 1938.

In 1996, for the first time ever, the 109-year-old annual fall exhibition was rescheduled to be part of world famous rodeo weekend in May.

Filming

Lights, camera, action: Surrey on TV and in the movies Surrey has become a hot spot for filming of movies and television shows.

There were 302 days of filming in the City of Surrey in 2017, up from 88 days in 2012 — a 243 per cent increase over five years, according to James Monk, the city’s filming manager.

Although Surrey is attracting several commercials, and even some feature films, the majority of filming shot in the city is for TV shows.

In fact, 46 per cent of all productions shot in Surrey in 2017 were TV series, said Monk. In late January, a 150-person crew was filming at city hall for “The Good Doctor,” starring Freddie Highmore of “Bates Motel” fame.

“City hall is the hospital in the show,” Monk noted. “From my understanding, it’s shown in almost every episode.”

In December 2017, fans gathered in Cloverdale as “Supernatural” filmed there. The crew constructed a faux burger shop and a gazebo in Hawthorne Square at 5755 176th Street and Mark Pellegrino, who plays the show’s Lucifer, was seen filming close shots.

In early 2018, SkyDance Media released its “Altered Carbon” Netflix series, which was filmed exclusively at the 75,000-square-foot studio that opened in September 2016 in the 88th-Avenue Kennedy Heights printing plant once operated by Pacific Newspaper Group.

While most of the filming in Surrey is for TV series, the city has graced screens in feature films as well.

“A big one that came to North Surrey last year, at City Hall Plaza, was ‘Skyscraper,’” said Monk.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays a retired hostage-rescue team lead in the action film, due in theatres in the summer of 2018. The team “landed a helicopter” as part of that shoot, shutting down 103rd Avenue between University Drive to City Parkway in the fall of 2017.

Public Art

Artwalk features 11 works in City Centre neighbourhood Surrey is filled with some amazing works of public art, and people can see some examples on the City Centre Artwalk. The self-guided tour is an opportunity to discover 19 public artworks along parks, pathways, SkyTrain pillars and civic buildings on University Drive in Surrey’s revitalized City Centre. The route is flat and wheelchair accessible, with public seating and washrooms at Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre, City Centre Library, City Hall and Holland Park. People can choose their own route and walk a little, or see it all. The route is connected at the south end to King George SkyTrain station and at the north end to Gateway SkyTrain station.

Here are some highlights of the art on this tour, as found on the City of Surrey’s website (Surrey.ca): “UrbanScreen”: Located on the west wall of Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre, Surrey’s UrbanScreen (pictured) is an offsite programming venue of Surrey Art Gallery. The venue is Canada’s largest non-commercial outdoor urban screen dedicated to presenting digital and interactive art, and can be viewed from SkyTrain, between Gateway and Surrey Central stations.

Exhibitions begin 30 minutes after sunset, and end at midnight. See the screen at 13458 107A Ave. “Convergence”: Originally installed at the North Surrey Recreation Centre in Spring 2011, these 50 mosaic projects can now be found outside the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. Connie Glover and Vallalee Hoffman worked with the Whalley community to create a mosaic pathway that reflects the neighbourhood. Located within the gardens on the east site of the building, “Convergence” reflects on the place people meet as they make their way to work, play, and shopping, and also how the community’s cul-

tural diversity is intermingling and converging.

Circular shapes contain images of local history, families, nature, and recreation activities. At Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre Youth Park, 13458 107A Ave. “Marks”: Liz Magor’s four sculptural forms are installed in a group of three on the third floor and a single piece on the fourth floor of the City Centre Library. These large silicone forms look abstract at first, but seen from above, they resemble punctuation marks. As we move between them, we become part of the narrative of the library: the story of people coming together in a public place to pursue solitary acts of reading, studying, or researching. The quotation marks also “record” the many stories of a diverse community. Made from black silicone, they are warm and soft to the touch, and are shaped by impressions of the human body—hands, legs, elbows. They offer a surprising contrast to the clean white architecture of the library, and welcome readers to lounge on their surfaces. At City Centre Library, 10350 University Dr. “Pebble Mosaics”: A series of pebble mosaic panels are installed on wall inserts and walkways in Holland Park. Artist Glen Andersen worked with river rocks, carefully combining colour, texture, size, and form to build complex yet simply stunning designs. These mosaic artworks are based on mandala, wheel, and floral designs and reference cultural and natural motifs. The largest is “Dahlia,” located on the plaza at the King George entrance to the park. All are intended to enhance the park experience and complement nearby steel sculptures by Bruce Voyce. At Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd. “Protecting the Future, Serving the Present”: Crafted by Artform Sculpture Studio,

Public Art cont. this bronze-coloured concrete sculpture was dedicated to the Surrey Firefighters in recognition of their contribution to the city over the past 50 years. It speaks of the spirit and diversity of firefighters, their efforts to safeguard our neighbourhoods and homes, and their charitable work, especially that directly benefitting youth in our community. The firefighter depicted (pictured) has been modeled after a serving member of the Surrey Fire Department. Of Korean descent, he represents not only the years of dedicated firemen, but also the cultural and ethnic diversity that is one of the hallmarks of the City of Surrey.

At Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd. “Spring Floraform, Summer Floraform, and Seeds of Change”: Bruce Voyce’s series of large-scale, delicate sculptures, based on flowers, leaves, seeds, and seedpods, are located throughout Holland Park. The artist conceived metal sculptures that refer to edible and medicinal plants with a rich history amongst First Nations cultures as a means to harmonize the urban and natural environments in the park. At Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd. “Together”: Surrey’s City Hall features an artwork inspired by the theme of democracy. The lead artists, Sophie Nielsen and Rolf Knudsen of Studio Roso, took their inspiration for the planned artwork from the behaviour of animals, who work collectively to ensure their survival. Approximately 800 aluminum birds are suspended from the roof of the building’s six-storey atrium. Within the atrium’s glass walls and skylights, the flock of birds appears to be flying through the building.

At night, a special lighting system adds to the effect of the sculpture’s dynamic movement.

Measuring over 20 meters long and almost as high, this sculpture is one of the most impressive public artworks in Metro Vancouver. At City Hall, 13450 104th Ave.

“Underfoot Yet Overhead”: Karen Kazmer’s work features two different, yet related, series of visual markers installed on SkyTrain pillars in City Centre. In Part 1, viewers will see a series of pierced metal panels with imagery based on the increments of athlete’s movements. Arranged sequentially, like stop-motion animation, the series of 12 different actions celebrate sports activities in Whalley Athletic Park and Holland Park.

Kazmer calls each series “a microscopic hunt for meaning.” Their intent is to create a visible presence for what is normally unseen or overlooked. In Part 2, the design refers to microscopic organisms, specifically bacteria that form an invisible, yet essential, part of our ecosystem. The artist focussed on bacteria that live in the soil and cause dead matter to decompose. At SkyTain pillars along University Drive near 105A Ave. “Were It Not For You”: Glen Andersen’s three-panel “bas-relief” (low-relief sculpture) decorates the central fountain wall in Holland Park. The scenes on the panels are executed in a joyous, Art Nouveau style, with a nod to Asian ornament. The triptych’s imagery depicts earth, air, fire, water, and space in dynamic interplay.

Symbolic of these are images of a curling fern frond, a hummingbird, the sun, and a fish with overarching waves. This artwork celebrates the life force and complements the other nature-based artworks in the park, at Holland Park, 13428 Old Yale Rd. “West Coast Landscape”: An expansive painting measuring 6’6” x 20’6”, “West Coast Landscape” was created specifically for the Surrey City Centre Public Library and is located near the entrance on the main floor. It is one of Gordon Smith’s largest creations. At first glance, the painting may seem to render a familiar scene.

But upon looking closer, this monumental work does more than reproduce a scene from nature.
