Circus Entertainment

Ringmaster Joseph Bauer is a ninth-generation circus performer. “It’s an incredible showcase of elite circus artists from all around the world that has been designed for multi-generational families,” Bauer said in a press release. “It’s the essence of a traditional circus. This year families from Abbotsford and across Canada will be fascinated by the amazing new global cast of performers coming to perform for families.”

Performers with Royal Canadian Family Circus return to Abbotsford this spring. This time around, from June 7 to 10, the company’s 2,700seat big top tent will be set up at Tradex for eight shows, which promise to “mesmerize,

astound, and thrill audiences beyond the extraordinary.” The family-friendly circus features high-wire acts, jugglers, Chinese acrobats, stunts, aerialists and more. There are no exotic animals in the show.

Last time through Abbotsford in May 2017, Royal Canadian Family Circus’ yellow-and-red tent was anchored in the parking lot of Sevenoaks Shopping Centre.

Among the featured acts for 2018 are Guerrero 4 Man High Wire (seen on the TV show

to provide diesel for all the generators, and we hire local (people) to help.”

“We bring our own generator power – four of them are on tour, plus our box office that’s all computerized, and also the semis that house all the seating, the steel, the entrance tent, the concession wagon, so it’s quite a bit we bring with us.

Tickets can be purchased at royalcanadiancircus.ca. On show days, the on-site box office will be open from 10 a.m. to 8p.m.

The show in Abbotsford is part of a regional tour.

TOWN

“The whole thing, it takes about a day and a half, total, for setup, from the time of marking and building everything,” Bauer said.

“Our entourage of circus families from 12 countries have travelled the world sharing their talents with circus audiences on four continents,” Bauer noted.

The Abbotsford shows run June 7 at 7 p.m.; June 8 at 4 and 7:30 p.m.; June 9 at noon, 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and June 10 at 1 and 5 p.m.

AROUND

Last spring, Bauer talked to Black Press on the phone from Joplin, Missouri, where the circus “winters” prior to going on tour each spring and summer.

America’s Got Talent), the S Caleb Carinci Asch equestrian acrobats, the Bilea Transformation “Quick Change” Act, Gonzales Duo aerial act, juggling record holder Tommy Tequila and Bauer’s “Wheel of Destiny” act.

“We have four forklifts that come with us on tour, bobcats – all that stuff. The only thing we do locally is we tie in to the fire hydrants for water, because we have our own water trees that distribute water all over the lot, and we pay a company

Bauer has spent his entire life travelling with a circus of one kind or another. “I’ve been performing for 45 years, and my first show was in Osaka, Japan, when I was five,” he said in 2017. “My mom, dad and sister were performing there and they had me come out on stage and do a handstand on my dad’s arm –that was my first appearance. And we’ve been all over the world ever since, at expos, state fairs, amusement parks, all that,so I grew up travelling all over the world.”

condensed milk and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in corn. Add pasta to the meat mixture and mix well. Layer by placing half of the mixture in your baking dish, top with a good handful of cheese, rest of mixture and top with remaining cheese. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes. Serve with cilantro, avocado, sour cream and hot sauce. This dish freezes well. Cook up to finished stage, but don’t bake. Allow to cool, cover with tin foil and freeze. Remember to label with name of dish, date and cooking instructions! When ready to bake, thaw and remove foil and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees, or until heated through and cheese has melted. The Farmer and the Foodie The recent Sumas farm workers house fire might be the first time you became aware of the more than 6,000 foreign workers in BC. Not because they’re hiding or here illegally, as they are all part of the strictly regulated Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) Canada shares with Mexico. These hard-working men leave their homes for up to eight months a year, sacrificing to provide a better life for their families. It is not even a slight exaggeration to say that without them our local farms and orchards would suffer significant losses and we wouldn’t be able to feast on the bounty of fresh, local produce we so enjoy. It’s back-breaking, hot and dusty work, and the simple truth is that Canada doesn’t have the necessary labor force. Hiring students isn’t the answer, as our farm season runs from March to

October and students are only available for a small portion of those months. Watching them return to their home austing after an exhausting day and knowing ng they still have e to prepare supper and Go to: do laundry, w l eppfar ww. my heart is mm sad for these .com arket young families who must spend so much time apart, but incredibly grateful for all that they do. The next time you’re enjoying farm-fresh, local produce, please take a moment to appreciate their efforts and if you spot them doing their weekly shopping, be brave enough to greet them with an “hola,” and a “gracias” for all that they do.

It might not be summer on the calendar yet, but some already-toasty days have given us a sneak peek at what’s ahead. That means it’s time to get ready for the new style season, when flowing fabrics, bright colours and pretty patterns take centre stage. Maxi dresses are still on point and look especially fresh in a black-and-white geometric design. Or try a gauzy white blouse topping a pair of leggings or skinny jeans in, say, a pretty turquoise-pastel shade. The guys can’t go wrong with a bright polo shirt paired with tailored neutral pants with a subtle pattern, such as plaid or stripes. The key is to choose one piece that stands out, and keep the rest simple.

HOME LIFE

Abbotsford Communities in Bloom “People, plants, and pride.” That’s the motto of Abbotsford’s 2018 Communities in Bloom contest. “It’s really so much more than garden displays,” says Mayor Henry Braun about Abbotsford’s participation in the 2018 Provincial Communities in Bloom contest. “We want to encourage everyone to ‘Get Your Bloom On!’ and help us win five out of five blooms this year from the visiting judges on July 19, 2018.” Each participating community is evaluated by provincial judges on a variety of criteria ranging from environmental action and heritage conservation to urban forestry and landscape. One of the most important criteria, however, is resident participation.

There are many ways to get involved. Last year Abbotsford’s Communities in Bloom held a “Business Blooms” Scavenger Hunt. This year will feature a Resident Garden Showcase and a Communities in Bloom Garden Tours throughout Abbotsford on Saturday, June 23rd. The Resident Garden Showcase is open to everyone in the community. Just snap a picture of your garden or patio garden, upload it to our Communities in Bloom website between June 1st and

July 30th, and have the opportunity to win some great growing prize packs. The garden tours are a good opportunity to see our committed local gardeners creatively design plants and space. Information about the tours and how to participate will be available on the website. If you or someone you know is doing something special to create an eyecatching residence or business, we want

to know about it. The Communities in Bloom Team wants to acknowledge the many ways people and businesses in Abbotsford show pride in their community by making their space more beautiful and welcoming. To contact the team or for more information about the activities for the 2018 Abbotsford Communities in Bloom Contest, go to www.abbotsford.ca/cib or email the City of Abbotsford’s Community Developer at commdevelopment@abbotsford.ca.
