Broncos remembered The RBC Cup host committee is flying in Humboldt Broncos president Kevin Garinger and assistant general manager Jason Neville for Chilliwack’s May 12 round-robin game versus the Wenatchee Wild.

Prospera Centre’s ice surface and rinkboards will have special graphics, and 3,500 t-shirts with the phrase ‘Humboldt Strong’ will be handed out. Players will have a decal on their helmets with the Broncos logo and coaches will wear a ribbon in the team colours on their lapels.

Blood donor and organ donor booths will be set up on the concourse.

“The Chilliwack Chiefs organization is very honoured to recognize Humboldt Saturday evening,” said Chiefs head coach/general manager Brian Maloney. “We’re proud to step up and show our love and support for the people of Humboldt.”

The RBC Cup is a time to celebrate all that is good with junior A hockey and enjoy the thrill of competition.

But this year, it is also a time to remember.

It’s been over a month since the bus accident that claimed the lives of 16 members of the Humboldt Bronco family.

The hockey community continues to grieve, and the mourning will continue for long after this because this tragedy hit home for so many.

Doesn’t everyone have a brother or sister, son or daugher, nephew or niece, cousin or friend playing this game? We do, and that’s why we grieve too, and support the family and friends of the Humboldt victims in whatever small way we can.

Nothing we say or do can ever bring them back, but we can make absolutely sure they’re not forgotten, and we can honour what they died for by continuing to play and support the game they loved.

The board of the Humboldt Broncos said it best when they insisted the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League carry on with its playoffs in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“The healing is in the game.”

As you watch this year’s RBC Cup tournament, know that there is a very good chance you are watching one or two future National Hockey Leaguers.

The RBC Cup in its current form debuted in 1996, and it ran for 25 years before that as the Manitoba Centennial Cup. Over those 46 seasons, 123 players who skated in the tournament have gone on to play at least one game in the NHL. George McPhee, who is now the general manager of the hugely successful expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights, played in the tournament in 1978 as a member of the Guelph Platers.

The most famous alum might be Rod Brind’Amour, who represented the Notre Dame Hounds in 1988.

Brind’Amour went on to play in 1,484 regular season and 159 playoff games in the NHL and his son, Skyler Brind’Amour is skating for the Chilliwack Chiefs in this year’s tournament.

New look for Chiefs

The 2018 RBC Cup host Chilliwack Chiefs will be wearing special jerseys with a new primary logo and shoulder crest when they play their third round-robin game on May 17.

The look, on display in the team picture to the left, is designed by Jason Roberts. A self-taught local artist, his traditional name is ‘Sxwoxil’ and he is from Tzeachten First Nation within the Stó:lo territory.

Following the game, all of the jerseys will be auctioned by the players to fans in attendance with 100 per cent of the proceeds being donated to the RBC Cup Legacy Fund which is being created for the community of Chilliwack.

The third jersey is sponsored by Hampton Inn by Hilton.

RBC Cup memories still vivid for Tambellini Eric J. Welsh, The Progress

Anthony Vincent recently said that his two year BCHL career seems like its gone by in two weeks, and Jeff Tambellini can relate.

It’s been 15 years since the Calgary native played junior A hockey in Chilliwack, but it seems like only yesterday that he was leading the Chiefs into the semi-final of the 2002 RBC Cup in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“There’s part of me that feels like it was a long time ago and sometimes it does feel like it was just yesterday,” he said. “I was very fortunate to play on a great team where they were even better people than they were players.

Looking back, it’s one of the closest groups I’ve

ever been a part of and the memories we have, even though it’s been a lot of years, they still hold pretty strong.

“I think about it a lot and how hard it is to win that championship because of the amount of rounds we had to go through and you still have to go through. You’re playing playoff hockey for a couple months just to get to that tournament and have a chance to compete for that championship. It takes a lot out of any team to make that kind of run.”

Tambellini’s Chiefs were the last Chilliwack team to play in the national junior A championship, back when Victoria was the Salsa, Langley was the Hornets and the league still had teams in Quesnel

The Chiefs rolled through the regular season, setting franchise records for wins (46) and points (96). Their 341 goals in 60 games was 50 more than the next highest-scoring team from Cowichan Valley.

But Tambellini said it wasn’t what happened on the ice that made that team special. It’s how they

were off the ice. In a Progress article from March 5, 2002, Gabe Gauthier said, “Guys are so close.

We’re always standing up for each other and doing things as a team. It’s a family.”

Looking back, Tambelli said that was spot on and it started wth head coach Harvey Smyl.

“Talk about a guy who commanded respect, who was a huge part of the community and was able to motivate his players without saying too much,” Tambellini said. “We wanted to run through a wall for him because we cared so much about what he thought. He built us an amazing team and we wanted nothing more than to make him proud.”

Eagles and Nanaimo Clippers.

But Tambellini recalled his team falling behind 2-0 in the BCHL final against Vernon, the first true adversity they’d faced.

After coming back with four straight wins to beat Vernon and capture the third league championship in franchise history, Chilliwack went on to the Doyle Cup

where they again found themselves in a 2-0 hole against the Alberta champion Drayton Valley Thunder.

vironments against two really tough teams, we came into the RBC Cup pretty banged up,” Tambellini said.

After losing the RBC Cup opener, 4-3 in overtime to Halifax, Chilliwack produced three straight wins to make the semi-finals where their dream season finally ended with a 4-3 loss to the OCN (Opaskwayak Cree Nation) Blizzard.

“We felt going into the tournament that we had a good chance, but when it’s down to one game anything can happen and that game didn’t go as planned,” said Tambellini, who won the Roland Mercier Trophy as RBC Cup MVP. “Before you knew it we were out of the tournament and a whole year’s worth of planning

was down the drain.

“But for me, an elite standard was set by that team about how our group was going to perform every night. It created that standard in me at a really young age and I took that into the collegiate and pro ranks for the rest of my career.”

Tambellini just retired from pro hockey in September.

His final season, in 2016-17, was split between Swedish Elite League clubs Vaxjo and Djurgardens, and now he’s just been hired as the new hockey boss of the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters.

He doesn’t talk to his former Chilliwack teammates often, but when he does he’s reminded just how much fun that period in his life was. This is a man who has played

in a Stanley Cup final (2011 with Vancouver) and won a championship in Europe.

But the 2002 RBC Cup is right at the top when he considers his cherished hockey moments, and he hopes the Chiefs who take to the ice in the 2018 RBC Cup appreciate how special the experience is.

“I’d tell them to appreciate what the tournament is, especially as the host team,” he said. “Everybody who gets into the tournament has a chance to win this, and if you can get a little momentum behind your team you become a national championship.

“I would love nothing more than to watch the Chilliwack Chiefs walk away with an RBC Cup because the city definitely deserves it.”

The Royal Bank Cup has been the symbol of national junior A hockey supremacy since 1996, when the BCHL’s Vernon Vipers became the first team to hoist the trophy.

In 25 years prior to that, dating back to 1971, teams played for the Centennial Cup. In 47 years of national championship play, British Columbia has produced the most victors, winning 13 titles. The Vernon Vipers have been the most successful organization, winning four RBC Cups (1996, 1999, 2009 and 2010).

They were known as the Lakers when they added back to back Centennial Cup championships in 1990 and 1991.

The West Kelowna Warriors were the last BCHL team to win the RBC Cup, downing the Lloydminster Bobcats 4-0 in the 2016 final.

Other BCHL teams to win the RBC Cup are the Penticton Vees (2012),

Burnaby Express (2006) and South Surrey Eagles (1998). The 1986 Penticton Knights, 1987 Richmond Sockeyes and 1993 Kelowna Spartans prevailed in the Centennial Cup era.

Ontario has produced 11 champions while Saskatchewan has produced 10 and Alberta eight.

New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec have never had an RBC or Centennial Cup winner.

The Chilliwack Chiefs have made two appearances at the RBC Cup, and while they’ve never come out victorious, Jeff Tambellini’s performance in 2002 won him the Roland Mercier Trophy as tournament MVP. While hosting the RBC Cup doesn’t guarantee success, Chief fans should be encouraged to know that in the 24-season RBC Cup era, hosts have won the tournament six times and made an appearance in the final 12 times.

What’s happening off the ice The 2018 RBC Cup will feature 13 action-packed games with the top teams in junior A hockey going head-to-head, culminating in the championship game on Sunday, May 20.

There’s plenty happening off the ice as well.

Between games, head to the Beer Garden which will be set up at the Prospera Centre secondary rink, featuring music and entertainment, food, and of course beer and other liquor and soft drink options.

Hot food service will be available all day and Happy Hour will be in effect from 5 to 7 p.m. from May 14 to 17.

A VIP Lounge, co-sponsored by Waterstone LLP and The Brick, will provide comfortable sofas and chairs.

Featured artists on the Chances Chilliwack Sound Stage will include Judy Tuesday, Appaloosa, Trevor McDonald, R&B Allstars, The Lounge Hounds, The K.O.s, Damian Marshall, Dog Daze, Joyride, Calvin Rempel, Blue Bossa Jazz, Big Shiny, Damn Chandeliers, and a CCR/Bob Seger tribute band.

Fans at the games will have plenty to enjoy as well.

Bria Skonberg, Danielle Marie and Jordan Aaron and many other Chilliwack musicians are scheduled to sing the national anthem before matches.

Game nights will include live music from Judy Tuesday and Trevor McDonald (on select nights) and appearances by the Sardis Drumline and the Chilliwack Chiefs Dance Team. Promotional giveaways and contests include the Save-on-Foods Cart Shuffle, Esso Free Gas Giveaway and McDonald’s Chucka-Puck.

Save-On-Foods is also distributing 1,000 tickets to local students, with Adopt-A-School days set for May 15 and 17.
