WELCOME TO THE SHUSWAP A beautiful four-season region and tradi­tional territory of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) Nation. Four bands call the region home — Adams Lake, Neskonlith, Little Shuswap Lake and Splatsin.

Besides its ancient heritage, there are many factors that make the Shuswap an exceptional place to live in and visit.

At the heart of the region is Shuswap Lake. With more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline, it is a wonderland for those who enjoy fishing, swimming, houseboating and other outdoor activities.

The diversity of the lake itself, with so much of its shoreline still in a natural, uninhabited state, is a rarity.

Also exceptional is the region's great diversity of ecosystems; from dry ponderosa pine and bunchgrass landscapes

near Chase to the Interior rain forests of the Upper Adams and Seymour rivers, to the rich Shuswap and Salmon River farmlands. In some areas, the diversity can be a mere hundreds of metres apart.

Not only do our forests draw people in with their beauty, they provide critical wildlife habitat and are an important economic resource.

The Wildfire Branch of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Resource Operations understands the crackle, warmth and smell of a campfire add a magical ambiance to the camping experience. But these magnificent trees, many more than 100 years old can be quickly destroyed in a wildfire.

The decision to impose a campfire ban is not taken lightly, but forests dry out

very quickly in the summer heat — even if there have been heavy recent rains.

Campfires must be no larger than a half-metre wide by a half-metre high and need to be situated in a metal or rock fire ring. Always have at least eight litres of water or a shovel on hand in case your fire escapes. When you’re finished, douse the fire with water, stir, repeat, then touch to make sure those ashes are cool. If you cannot put your hand in the ashes, the fire is not out.

There are stiff penalties for those who cause abandon a campfire or cause a wildfire. So be careful and alert. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.

Come for the summer but make sure to return for one of nature's grandest spectacles in the fall.

This is the dominant-run year for sockeye salmon returning to spawn in the Adams River and other Shuswap watercourses following an arduous 600-kilometre-plus trip from the Pacific Ocean.

The greatest number of sockeye return to the Adams River in the North Shuswap, something the Adams River Salmon Society marks with the Salute to the Sockeye at Roderick Haig–Brown Park.

The 2014 salute event celebrated the more than three million sockeye who returned to their spawning grounds. It also drew approximately 200,000 visitors from around the globe and some 20,000 area students.

Sockeye usually gather near the mouth of the Fraser River in late summer and arrive in the Shuswap from late September through early November.

The 2018 dominant-run celebration will be held from Friday, Sept. 28 to Sunday, Oct. 21, beginning with a prayer and welcome by the Little Shuswap Indian Band on whose traditional territory the park sits.

During the Salute to the Sockeye there will be onsite vendors, souvenir sales, artisan wares, cultural and other entertainment and a special school curriculum for registered school groups.

Food concessions offer bannock, salmon, burgers, pizza and more, and potable water is available.

The Salute to the Sockeye festival is open to visitors each day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All vehicles must be offsite by 5 p.m. when gates are closed and locked.

The Adams River Recreation Area was renamed in 1978, to honour Haig–Brown, the noted British Columbian conservationist, author, fly-fisher, and magistrate.

In 1991, Roderick Haig–Brown gained full status as a Class “A” park and BC Parks initiated the idea to establish a non-profit organization to assist in developing a concept plan for the park.

The Adams River Salmon Society was incorporated on Feb. 22, 1994. It is run by a volunteer board of directors whose primary focus is to help organize and run the Salute to the Sockeye.

The Shuswap is well-connected to its Indigenous heritage, with many place names derived from First Nations words.

Salmon has always been key to the Secwepemc and remains key to its identity now. Fortunately, the cultural heritage and language are enjoying a revival and are being shared in tourism attractions and events.

There are several events showcasing Secwepemc culture this year.

• Join our First Nations neighbours at 10 a.m. at Pierre's Point on June 21 for a daylong celebration of National Indigenous Day, hosted by the Adams Lake Band and supported by the Switzmalph Cultural Society, Neskonlith Indian Band, Shuswap Trail Alliance, WA:TER, Shuswap Children's Association, Salmon Arm Métis Association and others, with financial support from the Department of Canadian Heritage.

• Talking Rock Resort and Quaaout Lodge is a popular vacation destination on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake. The name is derived from petroglyphs and pictograph rock drawings from First Nations history and many of these can still be seen on rock bluffs along lakes and rivers in the area.

of the lodge is in the style of a kekuli (traditional winter home) and the unique influence of the native culture is predominant in the many authentic native dishes served in the restaurant.

National Indigenous Day will be celebrated at Quaaout Lodge in a funfilled event, with a variety of stations featuring cultural and recreational activities — canoe rides, flint knapping, drum-making workshops, archery, storytelling in the winter home and in the outdoor theatre and face-painting. Meet birds of prey, courtesy of the British Columbia Wildlife Park in Kamloops. Traditional food will be served by the Quaaout Lodge chef using local ingredients. The celebration begins at 10 a.m.

The Arts Council for the South Shuswap has collaborated with the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band and Quaaout Lodge to assist with Indigenous Day celebrations and received a grant to bring music programming to the event with DJ Shub as the main feature. Mihi Rangay a Maori dancer and musician will also perform.

• Another opportunity to learn about our First Nations neighbours' rich cultural heritage takes place June 30 to July 2 with the annual powwow at the Neskonlith Band Arbour, a few kilometres west of Chase. Sponsored by the Working Together Powwow Society, this celebration features traditional dancing, singing, crafts and food concessions. Enjoy a powwow breakfast Saturday morning and a big feast at 5 in the evening.

Several vendors offer a variety of traditional native items including blankets, baskets, moccasins, mukluks, ribbon shirts, regalia, jewelry and souvenirs.

ists explores the effects of climate change on the salmon ecosystem in “Peak Year III.” Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Admission is by donation. The gallery also hosts Family Saturdays, a weekly drop-in art making program for families with children of all ages, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Families can visit current exhibitions and create a project together to make it a truly memorable experience.

• As a result of an innovative group called "Together Shuswap" established in 2010, elders from Salmon Arm's neighbouring Neskonlith and Splatsin communities have worked with the Shuswap District Arts Council to add their voices and experience to exhibitions and projects. The groups have helped build relationships between Indigenous artists and the settler community, and have dealt with reconciliation challenges in unique ways.

In this latest project, Neskonlith elder Louis Thomas proposed the creation of a legacy of stories and artwork that would tour classrooms in the local school district to teach children about Secwepemc culture.

The project, called Slxlxaya (sel-leugh-huh-ay-a), which means "telling it like it is," includes four Secwepemc legends and several contemporary stories told by Neskonlith and Splatsin storytellers. Artwork inspired from these stories is being created by 10 local Aboriginal artists, including three youths. The artwork is a mix of contemporary and traditional styles, including wood carving, beadwork, anime, drawing and digital artwork. Each piece will be accompanied by an audio playback device so viewers can experience the story at the same time.

The exhibition opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1 at the gallery and runs to Aug. 4.

"Sharing Our Culture" presentations by Neskonlith elder Gerry Thomas will be offered throughout the exhibition, after which the body of work will be available as a touring exhibition.

This will be a legacy for the children of all nations, helping to preserve the stories and encourage understanding of the Secwepemc culture.

The gallery also presents contemporary exhibitions in the historic building on the corner of Hudson Avenue and McLeod Street. From April 21 to May 26, it's “Fold and Unfold,” drawings and paintings

Many festival fans are expressing their pleasure at the return of Michael Franti this year. Artistic director Peter North says Franti is one of the most-requested acts for a return visit.

This year's fest of the best features more great talent — Monkeyjunk, 2018 Juno winner of the Blues Album of the Year, and Big Dave McLean, who was nominated in the same category. Other big names are Colin James, Harry Manx, The Family Stone, Cindy Church, Hannah Sanders and Ben Savage, Jimmy Dale Gilmore and Bill Kirchen, Sarah Jane Scouten, Kym Gouchie and Northern Sky. Also added to a growing list of excellent artists are spectacular Quebec octet, whose exuberant harmony of bows, keys, valves and mouths strikes a chord in music-lovers’ hearts, bringing pure joy to audiences in a quest of memorable evenings and festive occasions.

Geoff Berner comes to the festival with a reputation for keeping an audience on its collective toes, as he combines a

feisty, pointed performance stance with engaging songs.

Mbira Renaissance Band is an example of new Canadians who come straight from a musical source and are now working with young Canadian-born musicians who love African music.

OUTDOOR CONCERTS

The NimbleFingers Bluegrass and Oldtime Music Festival on Aug. 25 wraps up two weeks of excellent workshops, drawing music-lovers to beautiful Sorrento Centre on Passchendaele Road.

Many of the talented workshop instructors remain at the centre and host a great day of family music and fun.

This year's lineup will be familiar to bluegrass and old-time music fans: The Special Consensus is a superb bluegrass outfit in a classic vein but with more than enough modern sensibilities to attract every ear in this now pleasantly fractionating genre.

The Bucking Mules is a straight-shoot​ing string band that throw down some of the most exciting and engaging old-time music being made.

Other performers include the Lonesome Ace Stringband from Toronto and the Canote Brothers, Seattle’s twin brother musicians playing old-time and swing music. The Greg Blake Band brings bluegrass and gospel from the hills of West Virginia to the mountains of Colorado, and Seattle-based Eli West offers folk and jazz. Nomad Jones is a hot and happening Western Canadian bluegrass outfit equally comfortable ripping on rollicking classics or serenading on sultry ballads.

Also on the bill and no less exciting are Jenny Lester & Friends, RedGirl, Kayla and Matt Hotte, Miriam Sonstenes and Jeff Dill and Mark Simos and Friends.

Music adds vibrant sounds to the sumer scene right across the Shuswap, with live outdoor concerts just about every day of the week — for free, or by donation: In Sicamous, Music in the Park outdoor concerts are held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Monday at Sicamous Beach Park from July 9 to Aug. 20. This popular live music series is sponsored by the Sicamous and District Chamber of Commerce.

There are several popular outdoor music programs in Salmon Arm: sponsored by the Shuswap and District Arts Council, the long-running Wednesday on the Wharf takes place from 6:45 to 8:30 at the gazebo at Marine Peace Park every Wednesday from mid-June through August.

Downtown Salmon Arm sponsors three free programs every week at the Ross Street Plaza — Thursday jazz evenings take place at 7 p.m. every week beginning July 5; A variety of music genres are featured on Fridays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. beginning July 6 and in Saturday concerts from 7 to 9 p.m. from July 7 to Aug. 25 (Sorry no concert on Aug.18).

South Shuswap's Music in the Bay Waterfront Concerts begin on July 5 and play out from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays to Aug. 23 at Centennial Field.

Pride in our country and her people are celebrated in Sicamous, Salmon Arm, the South Shuswap and Chase.

• The District of Sicamous hosts Canada Day celebrations with a road hockey tournament on Main Street beginning at 8 a.m., food vendors and kids' activities. Festivities move to Beach Park at 5 p.m. with live music and fireworks.

• The Eagle Valley Arts Council hosts a special Canada Day celebration with a Children's Art Festival, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Red Barn Arts Centre and includes face painting and art projects.

• One of the most highly anticipated family events of the year is the Children's Festival which plays out at the Salmon Arm North Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and features many fun activities, thanks to generous support from community organizations and businesses. Admission is free or by donation and includes one free game ticket per child and a second bonus ticket if the child is wearing red. Many activities are free and tickets for carnival games are 50 cents. Take a picnic or buy lunch at one of the food concessions. • Responding to the success of last year's celebration, City of Salmon Arm officials will host a Canada Day event at Canoe Beach that will culminate with fireworks.

• In South Shuswap, start Canada Day celebrations with a delicious pancake breakfast prepared by the Sorrento Lions Club from 8 to 11 a.m. at Centennial Park. The annual parade begins at Glenview Drive at 10 a.m. and ends at the park. Watch for road closure reports. Take a lawn chair to relax in and enjoy the rest of the day.

Opening ceremonies with dignitaries will be followed by children's games, live entertainment, including a Cod Gone Wild finale, old-fashioned games, bouncy castles, craft and food vendors, displays and a beer garden.

Canada Day cake is served at noon.

As always, the celebration ends with an awesome fireworks display.

• Celebrate Canada's 151st birthday at Chase Memorial Beach from noon to 10:30 p.m. A parade takes place at noon from Safety Mart Foods to PharmaChoice Food and Drug.

Activities at the park begin at 1 p.m.

Cake will be served at 2 and entertainment will begin at 3. The celebration concludes with fireworks at 10 p.m. There will be food vendors and a beer garden.

• The North Shuswap Chamber of Commerce hosts a festival at Scotch Creek Provincial Park from noon to 4 p.m., featuring family entertainment and activities, including food trucks and live music. From 3 to 8 p.m., the Lakeview Community Centre at 7703 Squilax–Anglemont Rd. hosts a barbecue, games for kids and a beer garden. It's open-mic from 3 to 5 p.m. and live music with Kelowna's Glory Days from 5 to 8 p.m.

The history of settlement in Salmon Arm is recorded in many ways at R. J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum at 751 Hwy. 97B. Step back in time to see Montebello Place, which houses the Salmon Arm Museum, and whose storefronts represent several pioneer vintage shops that existed in the core of the city 100 years ago.

History and good old-fashioned family fun are the focus of many annual events.

• Visitors who dress in costumes from the era can compete for prizes from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the July 8 Pioneer Day. Participate in old-fashioned races and games, midway games, photo booth, wagon rides, petting zoo and more.

• Villains and Vittles Dinner Theatre plays out Wednesday, Friday and Sunday during July and August, with a delicious homemade meal and a play featuring original musical scores and history of the area.

• A Burger, Beer and a Chicken Like Birds concert takes place Saturday, July 14.

• A soirée on Thursday, Aug. 9 includes a five-course feast paired with local wine and beer and accompanied by fine music.

• A Classic/Antique Car Show from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12 features more than 100 classic and antique automobiles.

• The 21st Annual Harvest Celebration takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 9.

Enjoy the taste of the Shuswap and treat yourself to a mixture of delicious local cuisines from some of the best restaurants, delis, cafés, wineries and breweries the region has to offer.

• A great place to have lunch, Marjorie’s Tea Room closes for the season Sept.

• The 13th Annual Cemetery Tour takes place Sunday, Oct. 14 when curator/ archivist Deborah Chapman leads a guided tour of the old section of the Mt. Ida Cemetery.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE One of the questions tourists ask most often when they arrive in the Shuswap is where can they hike, walk their dogs or ride their bikes.

Thanks to community collaborations with the Shuswap Trail Alliance and hundreds of committed volunteers, there are many opportunities for getting out on well-maintained trails.

SHUSWAP EAST & SICAMOUS Sicamous and the east end of the Shuswap are home to 21 trails, which address a wide range of fitness levels and features. Distances are one way unless otherwise indicated.

• The 1.2-kilometre Caribou Lake Trail leads to a pristine sub-alpine mountain lake with good fishing, and a user maintained recreation site.

• The marine access only Cinnemousin Narrows Provincial Park is situated where the four arms of Shuswap Lake meet. On the south side of the narrows, Haven Point is an easy 1.5-km walk with good views both of Seymour and Anstey Arms. On the north side, Brock Point trail goes around the lake and past a little lighthouse.

• The easy 1-km Cummins Lake Trail, leads to a remote sub alpine lake, with fishing and a user maintained Recreation Site.

• One of the most difficult of the trails is the 6-km, 2.5 hour Eagle Pass Mountain Trail that quickly ascends to the alpine and is best accessed in dry, summer months.

• The Eagle River Nature Park features six kilometres of loop trails. Explore

the old growth cedar and hemlock forest along the Eagle River, which includes a boardwalk, foot bridge, and a series of interpretive signs.

• Also more difficult is the 7.4-km Hyde Mountain Lookout Trail that takes about 2.5 hours one way. The first 3.6 km are uphill, but don’t despair. A remarkable series of 33 switchbacks makes this a pleasant forest stroll — and a rigorous but doable mountain bike ride — through a beautiful mixed cedar and hemlock forest.

• Another very difficult trail is the 7.5-km Joss Mountain Pass, a full day backpack hike with excellent options for exploring in the alpine. Also popular with bears, so make lots of noise.

• For a quick and easy stroll to stretch your legs for 20 minutes, take the rough Kay Falls Trail that leads to the base of the falls.

• Also more difficult is the Larch Hills Traverse popular with mountain bike riders and skiers. It offers 2-, 4-, 7.4and 38-km opportunities, including a one-hour hike from the visitor centre to the Sicamous Forest viewpoint.

• The Malakwa Suspension Bridge spans the Eagle River and features a couple of pleasant and easy trail loops.

• More skill and endurance is required for the Mara Mountain (Owlhead) Lookout Trail that is a full day, 8.2 km hike featuring rugged mountain bluffs, alpine meadows, spectacular views of Mabel and Shuswap lakes as well as the Monashee Mountains.

• The North Fork Wild is a 21-hectare legacy conservation park adjacent to the Perry River. It features a network of natural trails and boardwalks and provides easy to more difficult hiking.

• The Old Sicamous Highway Trail follows the old, historic highway for approx. six kilometres. Enjoy cool shade, excellent views of Shuswap Lake, wildflowers, and birds.

NORTH SHUSWAP • Roderick Haig–Brown Park offers a beautiful trail along the Adams

River. The 26-kilometre trail system is popular for hiking and mountain biking in summer and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The park is located on both sides of the Adams River, between Adams Lake and Shuswap Lake. A beautiful and easy stroll along the river leads to a spectacular gorge, where the river squeezes through a narrow canyon.

• Scotch Creek Hlina Trail features a forest walk to impressive views over Shuswap Lake high above Scotch Creek. The first section of the trail has been completed to the Scotch Creek Lookout. A secondary wilderness route (the Hlina Loop) is brushed and blazed, but requires off-trail, wilderness travel experience and route finding.

• Superb hiking and biking are available at the Balmoral Trail Head, which is the southern access to the Blind Bay-White Lake recreational trail system. There is ample parking for 10-15 vehicles, a vault toilet and garbage receptacle.

• MacArthur Heights Trailhead is the northern access to the Blind Bay-White Lake recreational trail system. There is parking for 10 to15 vehicles, a vault toilet and garbage receptacle.

• The new Mt Baldy recreational trail is an intermediate walk (uphill) through mixed forests to a great lookout over the lake.

• Mt. Tuam Community Bike Park is located in the Cedar Heights area and

features looping bike skills trails and a gentle walking trail to a spectacular vista overlooking Copper Island.

• The Reinecker Creek recreational trail has a lower loop contained almost entirely within Herald Provincial Park.

This is a moderate hike that begins with switchbacks and climbs about 200 feet through picturesque fir and pine forest with views of Shuswap Lake. The recreational trail then descends gradually to cross the creek and returns on the west side on an old logging (skid) road, exiting onto Sunnybrae Canoe Point Road about 200 metres west of the Margaret Falls Trail parking lot. The hike takes 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Two longer loops branch off the lower loop just 60 metres to the east of the foot bridge across Reinecker Creek.

• Due to severe flood damage in 2017, the trail to Margaret Falls remains closed in 2018.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

• The remote, alpine wilderness of the Queest Mountain Trail features superb views, alpine meadows, avalanche slopes, wildflowers, and a forest service camp site. But be prepared, the two-plus hour hike is in remote alpine wilderness requiring experience, preparation, and navigation skills.

• Several kilometres of pleasant trails with superb views are included in the Riverfront Nature Park near the mouth of the Eagle River.

• A more difficult hike can be found at the scenic half to 1.5-km Sicamous Creek Falls Trail.

• Outstanding views of the Sicamous Channel, Shuswap Lake and Mara Lake are the attraction to the more difficult half-hour to one-hour hike to the Sicamous Lookout.

• Not for the faint of heart, the 38-km round trip Simm Creek Loop Trail is rated more difficult to most difficult.

• Also more difficult, The Lizard Mountain Bike Trail takes over 2.5 hours to complete.

• For the more casual walker, Yard Creek Park is a popular day-use area and campground, with trails along the creek in either direction through cedar and hemlock forest.

• Sicamous Creek Trail is an easy .5 kilometre hike appealing to entry level hikers and families. There is parking for up to 20 vehicles, a picnic table, a vault toilet and garbage receptacles for public convenience.

PARKS & BEACHES SICAMOUS AND AREA • Located on Community Hall Road next to the firehall, Malakwa Community Park is the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s newest park that will officially open in 2018. It features a loop walking trail, bicycle skills loop trail, grassed picnic area, state of the art playground.

The park also features a community garden with a series of raised garden beds. Amenities include a vault toilet, picnic tables and benches.

• Yard Creek Provincial Park is a 175-hectare park covering 60 hectares of beautiful forested uplands and 115 hectares of riparian habitat 15 km east of Sicamous. It features 65 shaded RV and tent sites, a log picnic shelter, and toilet facilities. The park offers an extensive network of recreational nature trails.

• The popular, public Beach Park in Sicamous is the location for many of the community's celebrations and offers many waterfront activities, including swimming.

• Cambridge Road offers one of seven lake accesses to Mara Lake in Swansea Point. The park has a vault toilet, four picnic tables, including one that is handicap accessible.

• Canterbury Road is another lake access to Mara Lake in Swansea Point, with parking for up to three vehicles, a sandy beach and a beach volleyball court.

• Another Swansea Point access for hand-launching boats only is at Eton Road. There is parking for up to four vehicles, but no washrooms on site.

• Oxford Road in Swansea Point is a lake access park that features a washroom, bike rack and parking for up

• Westminster Road Lake Access is outfitted with a bike rack, garbage receptacle, two picnic benches and parking for three cars. There are no public washrooms.

• Also in Swansea Point, a day-use lake access park at Windsor Road has a public boat launch and is also used by emergency vehicles to access the lake. There are no public washrooms on site.

SALMON ARM The city maintains 54 hectares of park land including, beaches, parks, lawn bowling, horseshoe and playing fields, marinas, wharfs and walking trails.

• Marine Peace Park features a boat launch, gazebo, large grassy area with several picnic tables and benches, washroom facilities, seasonal concession and is the site of the popular Wednesday on the Wharf summer music series.

• Birdwatchers flock to the wharf area, foreshore trail and Peter Janninck Park to catch a glimpse of the area's large bird population, including the fabulous dancing grebes. Stop in at the Salmon Arm Bay Nature Enhancement Society's interpretive Centre at Marine Peace Park for more information.

• Enjoyed by residents and visitors, McGuire Lake Park is a popular spot for weddings and photos. There is a paved walkway around the lake, large grassy areas, picnic tables and washroom facilities.

• Canoe Beach is the closest swimming beach to Salmon Arm and features a protected swimming area, large grassy area, picnic tables, washrooms, a small playground, a concession during the summer months and boat access.

• Blind Bay Beaches (also known as Pebble Beach and Sandy Beach) are two of the most popular beaches on Shuswap Lake. There are picnic tables and washroom facilities are available at the parking lot adjacent to the Blind Bay Community Hall.

• Blind Bay’s Caen Road Park is a grassy, day use hand-launch park and swimming area, with picnic tables, washroom, benches, and a swimming area. There is no lifeguard on duty.

• G i l l e s p i e R o a d C o m m u n i t y Park boasts a swimming dock, picnic area, a vault toilet and garbage receptacles. Parking is available for four vehicles.

• Cedar Heights Park includes a children's playground equipped with a sun shade, swings, minor ball diamond and a grassy play area. There is a vault toilet and garbage receptacle as well as benches and picnic tables.

• The Harbour Road boat launch has a public vault toilet, garbage receptacles, a cement boat launch and a 60foot dock for temporary loading and

unloading of boats. This is a shallow boat launch and is only suitable for smaller boats in the late summer due to low water levels.

• John Evdokimoff Bike Park is a bike skills park located in White Lake, graded green, blue and black for difficulty levels. Progressive drops, table tops, balance features and free trail rides are featured. The park also includes washrooms and a viewing platform.

• Sorrento’s year-round Markwart Road boat launch features a vault toilet,

a garbage receptacle, 11 parking stalls for vehicles and boat trailers and a boat dock for temporary moorage while loading and unloading.

• The day-use Notch Hill Community Park features a hand-crafted, wooden train viewing platform located on Notch Hill Road. The park shares the site with Notch Hill Hall, one of the oldest community halls in the Shuswap dating back to 1910, as well as the Notch Hill School (1921) and Notch Hill Church (1906).

• Reedman Road Community Park is a small public lake access that extends approximately 50 metres from Blind Bay Road to the shore of Shuswap Lake.

• Rocky Point Road is a small lake access for hand launching small watercraft, with minimal facilities.

• Sorrento/Blind Bay Park includes a skating rink in winter, a batting cage, tennis courts, soccer field, basketball court, three baseball diamonds, concession stands, dog park, water spray park, and a playground with a state-of-the-art sun shade.

• White Lake Community Park features a boat launch with a fixed dock, a day-use parking area for tow vehicles and trailers, a vault toilet, picnic area and viewing platform with views over White Lake. This park is kept open in the winter as the area is used extensively during ice fishing season.

• Hugh Road Community Park is a 0.5 hectare site with 70 metres of lakefront providing access to White Lake. It is a steep site with parking for six vehicles, washroom, garbage can, trail and picnic benches. The trail winds down from the parking lot, past two

picnic benches, each with a superb view across the lake. At the end of the trail is possibly the best swimming spot on the lake; it has a buoyed swim area with a swim platform.

• Whitehead Road boat launch in Eagle Bay is open year-round and includes a vault toilet, garbage receptacle, six parking stalls for vehicles and boat trailers and a boat dock for temporary moorage while loading and unloading.

• Shannon Beach includes over 400 metres of Shuswap Lake shoreline in Eagle Bay and includes parking, a vault toilet and garbage receptacles. A short wheelchair accessible trail leads across Eagle Bay Road to the beach where there is a wheelchair accessible picnic table. A large swimming area is cordoned off from boat traffic and there is a swimming raft. This is a rocky beach, so take water shoes.

• Wild Rose Bay is a secluded park that features a recreational trail from the parking lot down to the shoreline. The parking lot is substantial and includes a public washroom and garbage receptacle.

• Herald Provincial Park is a popular destination campground and day-use area. The park covers 79 hectares of beautiful beach and forested uplands, and boasts a 119-site campground, boat launch and large day-use area.

HEADS ABOVE WATER With financial support from local non-profit groups and businesses the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station on Shuswap Lake has installed several kiosks with loaner PFDs (Personal Flotation Device) for children to use while boating or swimming. The kiosks are located at the boat launches in Sicamous, Canoe Beach, Shuswap Lake Park Provincial Park, Herald Provincial Park and the wharf in downtown Salmon Arm.

They have also been installed at Chase Beach/boat launch, Magna Bay, Blind Bay boat launch, Sandy Beach on Blind Bay and Sunnybrae Community Park. Two other kiosks are awaiting site improvements; Sorrento boat lunch and Old Town Bay in Sicamous.

SPIN THOSE WHEELS Enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of nature as you explore more than 1,800 kilometres of quiet, paved back roads in the area highlighted by Shuswap Tourism’s road bike (or hybrid bike/slick tire mountain bike) local cycle touring guide.

More than 35 out-and-back and loop cycling routes are identified, with an average distance of about 50 kilometres.

Choose from easy, moderate or challenging routes, varying in distance from short 20km trips to long 100km adventures.

Visitor information centres, parking spots, cyclist’s eateries, wineries, bird watching “hot spots,” swimming beaches, viewpoints and hill climb locations are among the features and services identified to help you to plan your cycle tour.

Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Chase, Sorrento, Enderby, Armstrong and Falkland offer a variety of services for the touring cyclist. Bike repair shops are located in Salmon Arm at Skookum Cycle & Ski and Sport Chek in the Mall at Piccadilly.

SLEDDERS' PARADISE When the white stuff covers the land, sledders come to ride some of the best trails in North America.

The Shuswap is home to seven excellent sledding areas — Blue Lake Mountain, Crowfoot Mountain, Eagle Pass, Fly Hills, Owlhead Mountain, Queest Mountain and Spa Hills, operated by a total of five snowmobile clubs — The Crowfoot Mountain Snowmobile Club, Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club, Hunters Range Snowmobile Club, Salmon Arm

Snowblazers and Spa Hills. Many trails are groomed, providing a smooth ride to the alpine. Sledding season runs from November to May and offers areas that are fun for families and others that challenge the most experienced and thrill-seeking sledders. Day-use chalets are available in six of the areas.

Sledding can be risky and mountain weather can very quickly turn deadly.

Check with experienced local riders regarding snow and weather conditions, routes and potential hazards. If in doubt, or weather conditions are variable, stay on well-used trails and riding areas. CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING & SNOWSHOEING For those who prefer to enjoy our winter weather under their own steam, the Shuswap has hundreds of places in which to snowshoe or cross-country ski.

Visitors to the area can rent snowshoes and cross-country skis at Skookum Cycle and Ski on Shuswap Street in Salmon Arm or John's Ski Shack at 375 Edgar Rd. Skmana X-C Ski & Snowshoe Club grooms 18 km of trails ranging from beginner to advanced some 14 km north of Chase. An easy 4.5 km trail circles both Skmana lakes. Intermediate and advanced trails wind through forest and meadows above the lakes on old logging roads. Skmana now has several snowshoe-specific trails. Identify them by the orange snowshoe markers.
