Despite a diminishing supply of skilled trades workers, fewer young people than ever are pursuing these occupations in Canada. There remains a stigma around so-called blue-collar jobs, and young people are frequently unaware that professions in the trades can in fact be highly lucrative and rewarding. Skilled workers are in demand, and unlike many other types of employment, these jobs cannot be sent offshore. While no sector is impervious to economic downswings, many trade workers enjoy job security even during periods of great turmoil. UNIVERSITY VS. TRADE SCHOOL A streamlined path into a trade often involves completing a vocational program at a trade school. Unlike university programs, which require all students to take a variety of complementary (and often unrelated) classes, vocational programs focus
entirely on preparing pupils for the reality of their chosen professions. In comparison to the four years it takes to complete an undergraduate degree, trade programs can either be twoyear associates degrees or even shorter certificate p r o g r a m s . This means trade school students can enter the workforce well ahead of their university-educated peers, and are also far more likely to find employment in a position related to their studies. A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR SKILLED TRADES WORKERS With an anticipated shortage of skilled workers looming on the horizon, young people who are proactive today have an excellent chance at finding themselves in high-earning, secure positions tomorrow. And thanks to government funding and incentives like the Apprentice Incentive Grant (AIG) and the Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) — which can cover up to $4,000 for tuition, books, travel and tools — trade schools are now as affordable as they are practical.

FIRST JOB OR NEW CAREER Five Ways to Acquire Useful Experience
First-time applicants, recent graduates entering the workforce, and people changing careers often face the same dilemma: they don’t get hired because they lack experience, and they can’t acquire experience because no one will hire them. While frustrating, there are ways to avoid this paradox and gain useful, relevant experience to land that new job. 1. Co-op programs. Many programs offer students the opportunity to alternate bet ween work and study terms. Work is related to your field of study and consists of several paid or unpaid internships. These allow you to acquire experience and to develop contacts in your field. 2. Student jobs. While at school, try to get a job
that develops pertinent skills that will be useful when pursuing your future career. For example, if you plan on working with children, choose a job as a camp counsellor instead of delivering pizzas. 3. Internships. Work internships are practical for both students and people looking to change careers. They allow you to put your skills and knowledge into practice, acquire experience and connect with individuals and businesses in your field. 4. Volunteering. Volunteering your time at a company in your fi eld or sector is a great way to acquire experience and expand your network of connections.
5. Temporary employment. Working at firms who hire additional staff during peak periods is another excellent way to gain experience. Lastly, don’t overlook the many opportunities found on the hidden job market. A significant amount of openings are filled without ever being posted or advertised. That’s why it’s important to turn to your network of friends, family members and even old classmates when looking for employment. Often times, you’ll discover that landing that first job comes down to who you know and not what you know.

NIC developing new Aquaculture Tech Diploma NIC’s new Aquaculture Technician diploma promises to provide hands-on, applied training in the latest aquaculture techniques. The program, now under development, builds on NIC’s existing aquaculture training and provides students with a real-world foundation of skills and experience. An independent economic analysis of the salmon aquaculture industry in BC shows an increase of 37% over the past three years in its value to the province, resulting in the creation of over 1,600 new jobs. Overall, farming and processing 92,800 metric tonnes of salmon in 2016 resulted in over $1.5-billion towards the BC economy. “It’s very exciting to be developing this program, incorporating comprehensive knowledge about the biology of salmonids and the different techniques in culturing,” said Dr. Jesse Ronquillo, NIC instructor and curriculum developer. “By working with industry we’re ensuring that students get the skills they need to transition smoothly from the program to working in the industry, or furthering their training and careers.” Ronquillo, a multi-award winning aquaculture scientist, educator and researcher, is developing the curriculum in collaboration with industry. The training includes production techniques for a broad range of aquaculture species including finfish, bivalves, crustacean, seaweeds and kelps and upcoming species such as sea cucumbers, urchins and crayfish. “We’re very excited to have Dr. Ronquillo working with us,” said Cheryl O’Connell, Dean of NIC’s Trades and Technology Programs. “To have someone with his expertise and
experience is a tremendous resource for students, NIC and the region.” Dr. Ronquillo has worked across Canada and internationally, including as a fellow with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The new diploma program will provide students with training in marine, freshwater and land-based systems of aquatic food production. The hands-on program at NIC is also attracting the attention of other postsecondary institutions. “We have had several post-secondary institutions identify an interest in collaborating with NIC on exchange initiatives while expanding potential pathway opportunities for future graduates,” said O’Connell. “We anticipate that there will be several opportunities for rewarding partnerships as the program advances.” The aquaculture diploma will launch in 2018. NIC received $600,000 through the Canada-BC Labour Market Development Agreement to develop the curriculum in cooperation with the BC Salmon Farmers and BC Shellfish Growers Association. The organizations, which represent the majority of BC’s aquaculture producers, identified a need for more specialized skills training as the range of species grown across the sector expands.

‘People first’ organization where you can really make a difference. BC Corrections to boost hiring numbers with professionals passionate about making a difference Rae-Lynn Hickerson was attending Lethbridge College when a networking day introduced her to some of the many career possibilities. But it was BC Corrections that really captured her interest. “I thought it was really interesting,” she says of her impression of the career opportunity with BC Corrections. A subsequent practicum at Lethbridge Correctional Centre in Alberta settled her professional path. “One of my passions is helping people so I saw it as a great opportunity to do that,” Hickerson says, reflecting on the education and experience she calls upon in her work. “I get to take what I learned in sociology and psychology and I get to use it and implement it.” Today, Hickerson is a Correctional Officer (CO) at the Okanagan Correctional Centre, a regional correctional centre that holds inmates of all levels of security that are either serving a sentence or are being held in custody while awaiting court appearances. Opportunities for career growth Over the coming months, the BC Corrections’ Adult Custody Division plans to double the number of new officers it typically hires – offering meaningful careers for men and women with the skills and personal qualities needed in today’s peace officers. “BC Corrections is very welcoming to all walks of life. There are all different types of inmates and everyone reacts differently to different people,” Hickerson says, also pointing to
the progressive training, with ongoing education and training opportunities that BC Corrections provides. “I have always said that our staff are our greatest asset,” says Stephanie Macpherson, Provincial Director, BC Corrections. “We are a ‘people first’ organization – which means we are always thinking of the people when we make decisions, and as we develop our principles, values and goals. People matter, whether it’s the inmate in our custody or our staff who want to help support that person in custody who wants to turn their life around. We continue to invest in our staff to ensure our organization is agile, responsive and able to excel in pursuing its mission of public safety.”
Work-life balance At this point in her life, Hickerson enjoys the four-days-on, four-days-off schedule many Correctional Officers follow – it lets her enjoy all the Okanagan has to offer, or visit her hometown of Cranbrook, for example. However, BC Corrections’ management also works to find the best options for Correctional Officers whose families’ lives or other needs might require a different schedule. Flexibility extends to career opportunities within the system, from working in program areas like metal shop, to working in the records department, managing day to day operations and supervisory positions. There’s also educational assistance and a good benefits package and pension plan. “There are tons of opportunities to move up, if that’s what you want to do,” Hickerson says. Giving back Today, Hickerson looks forward to returning to Lethbridge College’s networking day, this time representing BC Corrections and engaging others with the possibilities. “You have a real opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, to implement different programs and hopefully prevent them from coming back,” Hickerson says. “I feel very lucky to be here.”
