Enjoy an evening of music and learn about MCC’s work in East Africa On May 5, prepare to see, hear and taste a bit of East Africa at Gateway Community Church as violinist Calvin Dyck and a number of his friends, including the Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir, The Alumni Project and the Abbotsford Youth Orchestra, perform Sharing in Song. Dyck, who is Concertmaster for the Vancouver Island Symphony, is producing Sharing in Song as a benefit concert for Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). It will feature stories from Dyck’s recent trip to Kenya and Ethiopia as well as favourite melodies and ethnic songs. “We wanted to have an event where the audience could experience, see and hear about the impact of MCC’s work through the eyes of someone who isn’t part of the organization,” said Interim Advancement Director Ron Ratzlaff. A highlight of the evening will be the Moipei Trio from Nairobi, Kenya. This award-winning trio of singers, who are also triplets, have appeared multiple times
on Kenyan television and have performed on tour in the United States. Sisters Marta, Maggy and Mary Moipei are studying vocal performance at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. They grew up in a musical family in Nairobi and for years performed with their younger sister, Seraphine, as a quartet. “The Moipei triplets sing a mix of sacred, secular and show tunes,” said Ratzlaff. “I’ve looked at their repertoire and it’s safe to say we’ll hear all of those genres.” MCC is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches. The organization shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC envisions communities worldwide in a right relationship with God, one another and creation. As MCC celebrates the centennial of their ministry in 2020 they focus their work in five strategic areas of service: caring for the lives and futures of uprooted
and other vulnerable people; providing water, food and shelter in times of hunger, disaster and conflict, then education and ways to earn income; working with churches and communities to prevent violence and promote peace and justice; investing in opportunities for young people to serve around the world; and serving with humility and in partnership to meet local needs with local solutions.

To support their work around the world, MCC raises funds from a variety of sources including donations from individuals, companies and churches, MCC Thrift Shops, grants from the Canadian government and other sources and special events like Sharing in Song. Concert goers can expect to en-
joy great music from multiple cultures, experience MCC’s work in Kenya and Ethiopia through Dyck’s eyes, sample Ethiopian coffee, Kenyan tea and snacks from both countries. There will also be an opportunity to purchase Fair Trade items handcrafted in Africa from Ten Thousand Villages, and to donate and support the work of MCC locally and around the world. KNOW? Most vegetables need six or more hours of sunlight to produce well. If you have low light try growing lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard or salad greens. Soil is everything. Look for a good organic potting soil designed for vegetable container growing. Shallow containers are good for growing herbs and vegetables like lettuce, peas and beans. Tomatoes and peppers need deeper containers to be successful— 12 inches or more in depth. Remember: the larger the container the less the worry. Large containers don’t dry out as fast in the hot summer afternoons.

A career in gardening was a natural choice although Trayler first went to university for criminology to become a lawyer. He put himself through school by working at garden centres and realized he enjoyed working with people in the gardening community. “People who garden are generally happy people,� he said. “I love the changing seasons, I get to work inside and outside. A job behind a desk wasn’t for me.�

A growing trend is for people to understand where the food they eat comes from and many young people and first-time homebuyers are interested in learning how to grow their own vegetables. Foundation raises funds to purchase much-needed hospital equipment

Aiming to serve the communities of Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs by delivering the best medical equipment, programs and facilities, Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation provides funding to purchase much-needed hospital equipment. “Our primary purpose is to raise funds and awareness to further the improvement of health care within the Fraser Valley Regional District,� said Executive Director Elizabeth Harris. Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation holds several fundraising events throughout the year, applying the proceeds to the regions’ highest priority needs. Some of the upcoming events include Walk 4 Cardiac Health, RBC Cup, Scotiabank Marathon and Mill Lake Cruise In. June 22nd marks the third annual Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation Golf Tournament at the Chilliwack Golf Club. Featuring a four-person scramble, games, prizes, tailgate lunch, silent auction and banquet din-
ner, this event has raised $34,000 since 2016. “By participating in the Golf Tournament people are supporting the greatest need, which is currently our CT scanner,� said Harris. Businesses can support the event through sponsorship or donating silent auction items. Individuals can participate by putting together a foursome and enjoying a great day of golf or by spreading the word. Early-bird registration is open until June 1. A major focus for Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation is a twoyear campaign aiming to raise $1,000,000 to purchase a new CT scanner for Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre. Now a decade old, the Hospital’s current CT scanners are in use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “It’s a well-used piece of equipment that needs to be replaced,� said Harris. In 2009, Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre performed over 17,000 CT scans. In 2017, that number was over 30,000. A CT (Computer Tomography)
scan is a cross-section image created from a combination of X-ray measurements. Taken by rotating a narrow X-ray beam around a patient’s body, some common reasons CT scans are taken are to spot tumors, haemorrhage and bone trauma in the head, detect changes in the lungs, and gain knowledge about the heart.

“Equipment is always changing and improving,� said Harris. “New technology is out there; it’s time to upgrade.� Just like upgrading from a CD player to a Bluetooth connected system enhances and improves the music-listening experience in a vehicle, up-to-date technology creates a more effi-
cient and effective hospital. There are many ways to contribute to the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation, whether it’s through supporting events, making one-time or monthly donations, corporate giving, planned giving or volunteering. “We raise funds to purchase much-needed equipment for communities in the Eastern Fraser Valley,� said Harris. “Your money stays in your community.� Other priority needs for Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre include a MRI coil and a shower chair. And there are always additional needs on the Hospital Auxiliary, Psychosis Intervention and Pediatric Wish Lists. Some recent funded projects for the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre include a C-Arm, four Holter monitors, portable devices that measure and record heart activity, a blad-
der scanner and an instrument set for ambulatory care. This equipment alone cost more than $350,000. People’s motivation for contributing towards projects may be different but our common goal is the commitment to ensure our local hospital is able to provide quality care to our residents now and in the future,� said Harris. Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre is the principal referral site in the Fraser East region with a catchment area including more than 300,000 people. Abbotsford Community Foundation Builds a stronger, more caring community From 1980 to 2017, Abbotsford Community Foundation (ACF) distributed almost $10,000,000 in grants and student awards. The grants were made to programs and projects in Abbotsford related to education, culture, arts, sports, agriculture enhancement, recreation and social issues including homelessness and poverty. “Our mission is to inspire philanthropy and develop partnerships by investing in people, projects and programs to strengthen our community,” said executive director Wendy Neufeld. “The Board of Directors, led by Board Chair Harv Wiens, strategically approaches all initiatives with our vision that together we build a stronger, more caring community.” ACF has experienced steady asset growth over the years—the current endowment is just over $11,000,000. This has grown through individual donations plus the establishment of several special funds by other not-for-profit groups and special interest organizations. Over the past four years, ACF has awarded $314,000 for Smart and Caring community grants. These
grants are awarded to local Abbotsford charities who facilitate projects supporting and providing services to at-risk children. In 2017 nine charities were awarded a total of $82,500 to support their programs.

Each May, grants are awarded to projects helping the agriculture sector through the Agriculture Enhancement Grants Program. The joint initiative between ACF and the City of Abbotsford looks for projects that will have a positive impact in the agriculture sector. In 2017 three grant recipients received a total of $130,000 towards new technology with an environmental and sustainability focus.
The Student Awards Program’s purpose is to increase access to post-secondary education by granting scholarships, bursaries and other awards to students graduating from participating public and private secondary schools in Abbotsford. Students apply in February and the awards are handed out in June. This year there will be 326 scholarships totalling approximately $325,000 given to students from the nine Abbotsford secondary schools participating in the program. There are many ways to give to ACF including through the Abbotsford Legacy Stories Program. Participants agree to leave a bequest to an existing fund held by ACF or establish a new fund in their family name and their story, or the story of a family member they wish to honour, will be written and added to the Abbotsford Legacy Book and ACF website. The stories can be read online or at The Reach Gallery Museum where the book is permanently on display. Other ways to contribute to ACF are through life insurance policies, appreciated securities, gifts of real property, RRSP and RIFF, wealth

replacement policy, transfer of a private foundation, making an online gift and in memoriam and tribute gifts. In September 2017 a legacy fund was established in memory of longtime former Abbotsford Mayor George Ferguson. Established by his wife Ria, through ACF, the George Frederick Ferguson Legacy Fund provides a permanent benefit to charities with programs addressing homelessness in Abbotsford. Donations in honour of former Mayor George Ferguson will be added to the legacy fund in his name. “I love the diversity and generosity of Abbotsford’s citizens and look forward to partnering with even more organizations and individuals to help them invest in our community to make it even stronger,” Neufeld said. Additional ways ACF raises funds include annual events like the National Philanthropy Day Lunch and the Smart and Caring Golf Classic. September 20th marks the third
annual Smart and Caring Golf Classic at Ledgeview Golf Course. Beginning with a shotgun start and ending with a banquet at Quality Hotel and Conference Centre, ACF hopes to raise $100,000 at the event, which will go into the capital for funding the Smart and Caring Grants program. In 2017 the event raised $45,000 for the community fund. “We are pleased this year to have REMAX Little Oak Realty as our title sponsor,” said Neufeld. There are still some tournament sponsorship opportunities for businesses interested in supporting the event and player registration is open. Successful children’s centre grateful for community support The team at New Leaf Learning and Childcare wants children to grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators and are passionate about meeting and exceeding parents’ expectations. “We are blessed,” said campus director Kamal Pannu. “We’ve had great support from the community and great staff who are willing to go above and beyond what’s expected.” In the four months since opening, their second campus in central Abbotsford on South Fraser Way has a waiting list into 2019. The central yet private campus has a large parking lot, dedicated classrooms and a fenced-in playground. Many of their clientele has come through referrals from happy parents whose children attend the New Leaf Learning and Childcare campus in west Abbotsford on Blueridge Drive. With 48 available spaces, New Leaf Learning and Childcare offers specialized programs tailored for a child’s age. They have an infant program (ages 0-2), toddler program (ages 2-3), pre-kindergarten program (ages
3-4) and junior kindergarten program (ages 4-5).

In their role as teachers and caregivers, the team at New Leaf Learning and Childcare are dedicated to providing enriching activities so children are supported as they learn about their strengths and work on their weaknesses. “I believe in a strong team. Except in cases of extreme weather, children go outside every day and incorporate active play into their routine. Nutrition is also important to New Leaf Learning and Childcare. Believing good nutrition plays a vital role in children’s physical and mental development in early childhood, they take the responsibility of guiding children towards sound food habits se-

Their nutrition program includes a two-week rotating seasonal menu, which meets children’s needs and takes into account nutritional and energy requirements as well as cultural and health needs. Working with children has always been Pannu’s passion and as an early childhood educator, she understands the need and importance of investing in young children as they are the future. “We have a deep respect for the culture of childhood,” said Pannu. “We witness and we know that each child is a unique individual with great capacity to learn and able to make positive contributions to those around him or her.” Living in Abbotsford since 2009, Pannu immigrated to Canada in
1999. She founded and operates both New Leaf Learning and Childcare centres and aims to build a learning community for everyone, every day. “We aim to empower children, promote individuality and form respectful partnerships with families and the community while delivering high-quality teaching and learning experiences for children to form a foundation for their next step in life,” said Pannu. In addition to feeling self-conscious about missing teeth, there are worries about cost, discomfort and making the right decision. Knowing that most denturist fees may be covered by various dental plans and understanding the different types of dentures can help ease the pressure. Kafka Denture Clinic can create a new set of dentures and provide ongoing denture maintenance. Their services include
implant supported dentures, complete dentures, partial dentures, immediate dentures, relines, rebases and repairs and soft liners. Implant Supported Dentures are an option for clients who have a sufficient amount of jawbone remaining after tooth loss. Two or more implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone, which then hold the dentures in place. Having implant supported dentures involves at least two separate procedures, one to insert the implants and another to properly fit the dentures once the implants have fused with the jawbone. This is a more costly option but it’s also the most secure and natural-feeling solution to replacing lost teeth. Complete dentures are a non-surgical way of replacing teeth for clients who are missing all of their teeth on an arch. This removable dental prosthesis rests on the gum line. Complete dentures are created from an oral impression for custom-made dentures. Similar to complete dentures, partial dentures are for clients who only need to replace some of their natural teeth. These removable prosthetic teeth are created from an oral impression and then crafted for a custom fit. Immediate dentures are for clients who are having dental extractions and don’t want to be without teeth during the healing period. Created from an impression of the teeth and gums
before they’re extracted, these dental prostheses are inserted on the same day as the teeth extractions. For dentures that are in good condition but could fit better, a reline or rebase may be the right option. Relining is when extra material is added to the inside of dentures to improve the fit and rebasing is when the denture’s pink acrylic base is replaced. Soft liners consist of soft polymer material added to the hard denture base and acts like a cushion for the gums. Soft liners can be used to provide a more comfortable fit and are best used on a lower denture that rests on a flat, shallow gum. Formed in 1983 in an effort to preserve the Punjabi heritage in the Fraser Valley, DPS became an English-medium school in 1986. The school teaches the regular BC Ministry of Education curriculum plus Sikh studies and Punjabi language. “Parents wanted to reconnect with their culture and religion but there was no avenue for it,” said School Business Manager Balreet Mandair. “It was a bit of a niche market.” The school’s three basic aims are to provide quality educa-
tion with English as a medium of instruction, to teach two additional subjects apart from the regular BC Ministry of Education mandated curriculum (Sikh studies and Punjabi language) and to impart education in a Gurmat environment that would be free from smoking, drinking and drugs. Beginning with 11 initial students under the direction of Dalip Singh Gill, DPS now has 750 registered students. When a child enrols at DPS the parents also become members of the

Located on five acres in Matsqui, the school is in the planning stages of a new multi-storey building, which will feature classrooms, library, cafeteria, assembly hall,

With the planned addition the school’s capacity will be 1,000 students. Values are something that form the core foundation of DPS, for their students, their faculty and the community at large. As one of the top-performing academic schools in Abbotsford, DPS students win many awards and scholarships. In this year’s regional science awards, DPS had 15 submissions and eight were winners. Many graduating students go on to attend top universities. “Our alumni are quite distinguished. I can’t count how many doctors we have, as well as lawyers and successful entrepreneurs,” Mandair said. “They
always point back to the school and what it instilled in them. Many of them went into fields that coincide with our core values.” Alumni are scattered all over the world and some, Mandair included, have returned to DPS as staff and faculty. Mandair said many past students come back to visit and comment on how much they miss the school. “We’re a family,” she said. “Some of the staff members have been here for more than 20 years; they’ve seen the students grow up.” DPS is looking for students who agree to abide by their school principals and are willing to work hard to become not only good students, but better citizens. demeanor, to ensure each child has a positive experience. Their approach has been so successful a four-year-old patient recently asked his mother if he could have his birthday party at the Children’s Oral Care Centre. “I bawled,” said Dr. Tsang. “We think the visit is a success if the child had fun and did not realize that they were at the dentist—rather they thought they went somewhere fun, say the park. This is my vision for the centre and I’m grateful for my
team who can carry my vision forward.” After completing four years of dental school at UBC, Dr. Tsang had the opportunity to work for a year at Children’s Hospital. Already drawn to children after spending years as a youth and Girl Guides leader, her time at Children’s Hospital prompted her to specialize in pediatric dentistry and complete her PhD at UCLA.

Dr. Tsang loves working with children and wants them to have a close rapport with their dentist. She encourages parents to bring children in when their first tooth erupts and offers complimentary exams for children under 18 months. “There’s a lot of prevention we can do in babies,” said Dr. Tsang. In these appointments they spend time talking with parents about what to watch for and teaching them how to brush their child’s teeth. The team is mindful of both the child and the parent’s experience in their approach to pediatric dentistry. They want children to have a good experience, but also consider what their parents are going through
and take measures to reassure and educate them about oral health. The Children’s Oral Care Centre gives back by holding an annual Community Dental Day where they treat children in need who have been referred to them. They also participate in events supporting Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and BCDA Save a Smile charity. Dr. Tsang also takes time to travel to developing countries and offer free dental work. She has been to Cambodia, Venezuela, Peru and Nicaragua and is planning another trip abroad in 2019. She is grateful for the supportive community in Abbotsford and for her staff who spend much of their time talking with parents and playing with children at the Children’s Oral Care Centre. “Thank you to all the people who have referred us, to the parents who have found us online, and to all the people who have left good reviews. Whenever new content is added to a linked website it is pushed directly to the app. The technology also allows for lock-screen push notifications, in the event of winter weather announcements or school emergencies. This level of direct communications creates an efficient method for District and school staff to relay messages and information to parents
and students. “Our app speaks to our District’s commitment to the innovative use of technology and communications,” said Wilson. “We know that almost 60 per cent of our web visitors are coming to us from a mobile device and that number is only going to grow, so it made sense for us to invest in the development of an app that would connect our parents directly with our schools.” The Abbotsford School District continues to focus on early learning initiatives and young families. There are a number of programs for early learners through the District like Ready, Set, Learn — a program teaching parents how to prepare their preschoolers for school — and StrongStart. StrongStart is a free, drop-in early learning program for children ages 0 to 5 with an emphasis on learning through play, language and positive social interactions. With 12 StrongStart centres in Abbotsford, the program offers children quality early

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, called Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas was chartered in May 1996, originally an International Club meeting weekly on either side of the Canada/USA border until the attack occurred on the World Trade Centre on Sept. 11, 2001. Members of the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas view their motto Service Above Self as a way of life. “Rotary is an open and transparent organization” said Assistant Governor Michael Adkins. “This organization is for people who want to volunteer, give back to the community, locally and internationally, and to bring ideas along with their passion and enthusiasm. Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.” Their club’s primary and priority focus areas are on youth initiatives, literacy and education, children and families, seniors, poverty reduction and employment initiatives for the disadvantaged or disabled. Each year this small group of hardworking Rotarians raises funds for their chosen causes through its many activities in the community, including its St. Patrick’s Day Dance and Silent Auction and Annual Strawberry Sale. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Dance and Silent Auction is the club’s main fundraiser and it often sells out two months before
the event. This casual evening features dinner, dancing, cash bar, live music and silent auction. “It’s an un-gala,” said club Past President Thomas McMillan. “It’s a lot of fun.” Happening later this spring, the 22nd Annual Strawberry Sale will offer fresh, clean, sliced and packed strawberries to the public. In May, the details will be announced on the club’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/ RotaryAbbotsfordSumas) with prices, ordering information and pick-up instructions. Of the funds raised by the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas, over 76 per cent stays in the community with the remainder supporting international initiatives. They support non-partisan and inclusive groups who have demonstrated need and who are providing direct services that improve the lives of those in the community and around the world. This year the Rotary Club of Abbotsford-Sumas granted three $1,000 scholarships to students through their Triumph Over Adversity and Service Above Self awards.
In 2015, the club converted three old Vancouver Sun newspaper boxes into Little Free Libraries and installed them in Abbotsford parks in partnership with the city. There are now 15 Little Free Libraries around Abbotsford in places like Mill Lake, Community Services Offices at Apollo Sports Centre and the Old Court House, in Social Services
Offices and on Sumas First Nation land. “We’ve been able to bring things together so everybody benefits,” said Past President Thomas McMillan. There are now more than 100,000 books in circulation due to these Little Free Libraries. Rotary is dedicated to build international relationships, improve lives and create a better world. With 35,000 clubs in more the 200 countries, people come together to exchange ideas and form friendships and professional connections while making a difference in their communities and around the world. For 30 years, Rotary has resolved to rid the world of the crippling disease polio virus for-
ever and now this goal is insight. Rotary members have been instrumental through the funding of over $1.5 billion US to provide vaccinations, Doctors, nurses, volunteers as well as educating and equipping communities to stop polio’s spread. Through their efforts they’ve ended polio in 122 countries and are working towards the final two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the disease is prevalent in hostile and hard-to-reach remote areas. Membership in a Rotary club is by invitation. Potential members are invited to get to know the club better by attending a club meeting, a social event or to volunteer with a service project.
“It’s not only about networking to better your business, it’s about networking to give back and better your community (and self),” said Rotary Assistant Governor Michael Adkins. When getting an MRI you lie on a padded table. As the exam begins this table moves into the wide opening in the MRI system. Try to remain as still as possible to ensure the clearest images. Once the MRI report is completed by the radiologist it is delivered to the referring physician within two to three business days.
Fraser Valley MRI offers private, low cost MRI exam services without wait times Since 2004, the Fraser Valley MRI Clinic has provided private, low cost magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam services without wait times to patients and the medical community in the Lower Mainland. “We are a more economical option for patients living in the Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, Mission and South Surrey regions,” said general manager Dawn Haider. In an effort to keep MRI costs affordable, Fraser Valley MRI has never changed their $750 exam rate in their 14 years of business. MRI exams are ordered through physician referrals. Once the referral is received, Fraser Valley MRI contacts the patient to book an appointment for a convenient time. They make every effort to accommodate patients as soon as possible, usually within one to two business days. Recent information from the BC Government’s healthcare website (news.gov.bc.ca) lists that current, average wait
times in the Lower Mainland (Fraser Health) are 87 days for 50 per cent of referrals and 297 days for 10 per cent of referrals. This is why private, low cost MRI services are a good choice for many patients who find waiting for an exam in the public system stressful.

This technology produces such detailed imaging it’s like being inside the human body, which is why an MRI is ideal for diagnosing and visualizing tumors of the pituitary gland and brain, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), shoulder injuries, tendonitis, torn ligaments in the wrist, knee and ankle, masses in the soft tissues, bone tumors, cysts, bulging or herniated discs in the spine and strokes in their earliest stages. The MRI exam itself is painless, although the machine makes some noise so patients are given earplugs to enhance their comfort. Although the exam length varies depending on the type of study the doctor has ordered, in most cases MRI exams are completed within an hour and may be completed in as little as 20 to 30 minutes. Located at the Campus of Care adjacent to Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, Holmberg House is Abbotsford’s first free-standing adult hospice. Opened in 2016, the 30,000 square foot, 10- bed facility provides dignified end-of-life care to adults as young as 19. It also accommodates grief support groups, education seminars, and one-on-one support services. “Abbotsford Hospice Society provides these services without cost to the individual,� said executive director Ron Kuehl. The government supported— but not government funded— organization receives 80 per cent of its funding from individuals. To help cover its costs of about $300 per day per patient, AHS holds fundraisers throughout the year. The Butterfly Ball, AHS’ premier fundraising event, happens on April 28. This year’s gala offers guests delicious food, wine,
laughter, games and prizes. On May 1, the Dave Holmberg Sr. Golf Classic takes place at Ledgeview Golf Course and features a modified scramble format. And May 6 is Hike for Hospice—a fun day for all that includes hiking, hot dogs, face painting, and the Best Dressed Dog Award.

Holmberg House is designed to look and feel like home from everything in the living room lobby to the daily fresh-baked cookies. Many of the spacious rooms have walkout balconies, and the front
lawn and Serenity Garden are often enjoyed by patients on nice days. The staff and volunteers work to accommodate as many requests and emotional needs as they can, whether it’s bringing horses by for one last visit, or facilitating a wedding in the garden to make a mother’s dream come true. “We support families and are grateful for the opportunity to make lives better in the community,� said Kuehl. To stay at Holmberg House, individuals must be registered with the Fraser Health PalliaMve Care program through a referral from a physician or health care professional. However, people don’t have to be in the program to receive support. Counselling and other services can be referred through victim services, churches, and other places without cost to the individual. In addition to supporting those
who are living with a terminal illness, AHS supports children, teens, and adults who are grieving the death of a loved one. Services offered by staff and specially-trained volunteers include one-to-one companioning, support groups, expressive therapies, and a lending library with materials for all ages. For children, AHS employs play therapy and helps them tell the story of their loved one. In the cheerful room painted with murals and equipped with a “Narnia wardrobe,� there are three hearts decorated with dots of paint. “These are thumbprints from each child we’ve supported in the last year,� said Kuehl. In 2017, 4,400 people of all ages were touched through AHS’ programs and services. With 110 active volunteers, AHS relies on their volunteers to run many of their programs. Volunteers receive 30 hours of initial training as well as ongoing train-
ing and support from the 12 staff members. “We couldn’t do what we do without volunteers, it’s an integral part of our program,� said Kuehl. “We could use another 50 volunteers.� In October, AHS has been chosen as one of 10 healthcare sites to participate in a UBC study, which will allow them to help people much earlier in their journey. And in 2019 they’d like to launch a palliative day program for patients who prefer home care but need nutritional and clinical support. “We want to do more in the community than in our building,� said Kuehl, who described Holmberg House as a hub. “We aspire to help people live life well at home.� Located at 32780 Marshall Road, the AHS and Holmberg House office hours are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about AHS visit www. abbotsfordhospice.org.

For more than 30 years the Miller family has been in the furniture business. It improves balance, offers a full-body workout, is low impact, reduces stress and improves endurance. There are numerous spots in the Fraser Valley to participate in paddleboarding including Albert Dyck Park. For cyclists, there are many popular routes around Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley. Group road rides happen on Tuesdays and leave at 6:15 p.m. from the Life•Cycles store. This informal drop-in event circles Sumas Prairie and has an advanced riding
group and an intermediate riding group. “These rides are great for meeting other cyclists and learning how to ride in a group,” said Life•Cycles owner Harvey Bergen. Mad Dog’s Ski and Snowboard is always ready for snow and with a wide variety of

Their popular junior ski trade program means children are guaranteed a 50 per cent trade when they grow and need bigger equipment. “Our boot-fitting system is second to none,” said Bishop. “We guarantee the fit and if your feet are comfy, you’re going to have a good day out on the slopes.” Since the 1940s, Bishop’s Centre has been in business in the Fraser Valley in one form or another. When Bishop’s grandfather started G.S. Bishop and
Sons in Langley it was a sporting goods store specializing in hunting and fishing. Once his grandfather retired, the business passed to Bishop’s father. Even though Bishop worked full-time at a grocery store, he also began working at the family store on the side. For five years he worked a 40hour week at his day job and 24 hours a week at his family’s store. In the mid-1980s, Bishop became more involved with the family business and realized he wasn’t particularly oriented towards hunting. He decided to bring in five pairs of skis, five pairs of bindings and eight pairs of boots. “Mad Dog’s Ski Chalet was born,” said Bishop. “My dad thought I was crazy.” Seven years later they were selling 2,000 pairs of skis and knew they had found their niche. Over time they expanded to seven stores and pro shops spanning Vancouver to the Fraser Valley. When Bishop decided to move Mad Dog’s to Abbotsford it meant consolidating his locations into one. The large, old Gosling’s store was available, and Bishop decided to upgrade the building and be a part of revitalizing Montrose Avenue.
Over time Bishop scaled back the sporting goods Mad Dog’s offered and specialized in skiing and snowboarding. This year, Dr. Simpson Leung, owner of Cascadia Chiropractic Centre, celebrates his 15th year in practice and 10 years in his location. To put a feather in the cap of a landmark year, he’s proud to introduce a new chiropractor to the office, Dr. Pamela Bolla. “We’re a growing practice, which is why we’ve hired a new practitioner,” said Dr. Simpson Leung. “We are known for a high level of integrity and care and, with the addition of Dr. Bolla, we can better serve our patients.” In 1996, Dr. Leung was introduced to chiropractic care after his mother was in a traumatic motor vehicle accident and suffered severe whiplash and neurological problems. During her rehabilitation, chiropractic care made drastic improvements to her overall health. “It was this experience with my family that instilled a desire in me to change my pursuit of becoming a dentist, and provide care for suffering people like my mother by becoming a chiropractor without the use of drugs or surgery,” said Dr. Leung. After finishing his undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta, Dr. Leung continued on to graduate studies in California at Palmer College of Chiropractic West, graduating with high honours. Prompted by his personal experience, Dr. Leung also completed special studies on whiplash and brain injury traumatology at the Spine Institute in San Diego. Chiropractic is a non-invasive,
hands-on health care discipline focusing on the neuro-musculo-skeletal system. Providing diagnosis, treatment and preventative care for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, nervous system and joints, chiropractors use a combination of treatments predicated on a patient’s individual needs. “We’re fourth-generation recyclers,” said brothers Brook and Sam Lotzkar. In addition to providing full refunds on non-ferrous scrap metal and beverage containers, Regional Recycling offers free recycling for electronics, tools, equipment, batteries, appliances, lighting equipment, paper products, iron and steel items, paint, pesticides and flammable liquids. If items have a cord, plugs in, winds up, has a battery
or is made of mostly metal then they recycle it. They also recycle motor oil, filters and antifreeze. Each year, partners in the BC Oil Recycling Program collect approximately 50 million litres of oil and three million litres of antifreeze. Used oil is re-refined into new lubricating oil or processed for use in pulp mills, cement plants and asphalt plants. Antifreeze is refined and reused as new antifreeze.
Until last summer, China was taking half of the world’s recycling and processing it. Now with less options for processing paper and plastic, many municipalities are restricting what items they’ll accept curbside and knowing what can and can’t be recycled is becoming more confusing. As a consequence, there is approximately 250,000,000 unaccounted for refundable beverage containers each year in British Columbia. “That’s $25 million worth of deposits going in the trash,” said Brook Lotzkar. “People are on the go and recycling isn’t convenient.” One suggestion Regional Recycling has for the overwhelming aspect of recycling is to treat it as spring cleaning. By going through and setting aside recyclable items like broken electronics, broken appliances, out-of-date magazines, old lightbulbs and old cords, this can both clear clutter and benefit the environment. There are also clothing donation bins at Regional Recycling depots for convenient one-stop drop offs. To prepare items for recycling, rinse containers and sort recycling by type. Once at the depot, sort bottles and containers by similar size and value on the
supplied cart. Regional Recycling works to ensure their depots are clean and efficient to make recycling as straightforward and simple as possible. They also offer a chance for the community to make their recycling impact bigger by donating their cans and bottles towards the Ocean Legacy Foundation.

The international non-profit organization works to combat plastic ocean pollution. They develop and support plastic cleanup expeditions, educational programming and pollution hot spot mapping. Each year, Regional Recycling Vancouver holds a special Gift of Warmth event where they have a barbecue and distribute collected warm winter items donated by the community to their binner clients to help them face the cold winter months ahead.
Regional Recycling also offers a bottle drive program everywhere in the Lower Mainland, Sea to Sky and Nanaimo areas. Fundraising groups collect beverage containers from the community, then count and sort them. When finished, Regional Recycling picks up the containers and pays groups the same day. They also offer a free fundraising success kit to help groups raise more funds from bottle drives. “Recycling is good for the environment but it is also good for the local economy,” said Sam Lotzkar. “When you recycle you put local people to work and it trickles down from there, which supports your local economy far more than throwing something away does.” Offering a variety of recycling services and solutions, Regional Recycling is a one-stop recycling shop for beverage containers, scrap metal, electronics, paint, pesticides, fuel, paper, automotive batteries and oil products. “Many people ask us where our name comes from and we always enjoy sharing a bit about our grandfather, Gian,” said owner Ajay Mankatala. In 1940, Gian opened the restaurant and Indian sweets business in a small town called Jagraon in the province of Punjab, India. “Our father has carried our grandfather’s name since then, taking over the business after our grandfather passed away,” Mankatala said. “Our dad is still involved in the business, lending a hand and helping us to maintain our focus on traditional, quality Indian cuisine.” Starting in a 1,000 square foot space on South Fraser Way, the restaurant expanded to 2,000 square feet and then to 6,000 square feet within four years in Abbotsford. They now have two locations on South Fraser Way,
one for their Indian sweets business and banquet hall and the other for their fine family dining restaurant.
