The water at Alouette Lake is as cold and clear as any, and the picnic area is perfect for day trips, birthday BBQs and family get-togethers.

The municipal dikes here offer not only views of the majestic Golden Ears mountains, but wildlife, from eagles and hawks, herons and cranes, all set amongst acres and acres of farmland and following the path of the Alouette River.

Golden Ears Provincial Park is one of the largest parks in the province, renowned for the recreation opportunities provided by Alouette Lake, an impressive network of trails, and 409 campsites with easy lake access.

People are drawn to the beauty of the lake, bordered by the impressive Golden Ears mountains – the twin peaks of Mt. Blanshard.

It's one of the most popular provincial parks in the province with 600,000 day-use visitors and 110,000 camping visitors per year.

It ranks fifth in terms of annual park visits each year. But at 625 square kilometres in size, there's room for everybody. Alouette Lake day-use area provides beaches and picnic tables. If you want to spend some time in the great outdoors, Golden Ears Provincial Park has a total of 409 vehicle accessible camping spots. www. discovercamping.ca/GoldenEars Gold Creek is open from March 29 to Oct. 7, while Alouette is open from June 15 to Sept. 3 and North Beach is open from June 22 to Sept. 3.

Alouette and Gold Creek have toilets, showers, water taps and a playground.

North Beach, which is a little more affordable, has pit toilets and one-hand pumps for water.

And for people who want to rough it, away from the drive-in camping crowd, there are backcountry or wilderness campsites in Alder Flats on the West Canyon Trail, and at Panorama Ridge on the Golden Ears Trail. No facilities are provided, and all garbage must be packed out. The former site is a five-kilometer hike from parking, the second nine clicks in.

For boaters, there are marine campsites on Alouette Lake at Moyer Creek, the Narrows and at Alouette River.

If you’re feeling frisky and adventurous, there’s a place to go deep in the woods of Maple Ridge. The WildPlay Element Park is easy to get to. Just drive north on 232nd Street towards Golden Ears Provincial Park, turn east on Fern Crescent and then make a quick left on to 236th Street. The parking lot that leads to WildPlay and back to your childhood is half a block away. To book your time and space to play, go to www.wildplay.com/maple-ridge. It’s open seven days a week from April 6 to May 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From May 22 to Sept. 3, hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Reduced hours are in effect from Sept. 7 to Oct. 28.

The Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest is at the top of Silver Valley Road in Maple Ridge.

UBC took it over in 1949 as a place for research and education. Knapp was a forester who taught courses in harvesting and silviculture.

For visitors, it is a natural playground that benefits from the stewardship of the university. There are four colour-coded loop trails in the forest. They all begin at the research forest gate and parking lot and loop back there. www.mkrf.forestry.ubc.ca

Let the dogs run free. Maple Ridge has three off-leash dog areas.

Jerry Sulina Park, Albion Fairgrounds and Maple Ridge Upper Park. Waste receptacles and biodegradable bags are provided for dog owners at the off-leash areas. Maple Ridge is working on another off-leash area in Hammond, beneath the Golden Ears Bridge, but it’s not yet completed.

The dikes in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, along the Fraser and Alouette rivers, go back more than 100 years. And while they were established to reclaim land and protect it from flooding, today the dikes form a popular recreational trail system, enjoyed by joggers, dog-walkers and bird-watchers alike, providing some of the best scenery in the Lower Mainland, if not the province. Popular entry points are near the Pitt River Bridge and on Harris Road in Pitt Meadows, as well as Jerry Sulina Park in Maple Ridge.

If Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are known for one thing, that would be its lakes and rivers.

Both located along the historic Fraser River, a critical element in the development of both cities. The Fraser River is the longest river in British Columbia, stretching 1,375 kilometres, from the western side of the Rocky Mountains at Mount Robson Provincial Park and ends in the Strait of Georgia at Vancouver. Named for explorer Simon Fraser, the river was a transportation route and source of food for the Indigenous people of the region.

The Pitt River is a large tributary of the Fraser River. It begins in the Coast Mountains and along with Pitt Lake, is tidal in nature.

Pitt Lake, at 24 kilometres long, is one of the largest freshwater tidal lakes in the world.

The lake is a collection of untapped resources and spectacular sceneries surrounding a body of water known for its large waves and temperamental nature. Take Neaves and Rannie roads to Grant Narrows Regional Park at the southern end of the Lake, where camping, boating, fishing, water sports and hiking await.

Alouette Lake, in Golden Ears Provincial Park is another popular destination, for both camping and boating www.env.gov.bc.ca/ bcparks/explore/parkpgs/golden_ears.

The Alouette River is formed at the confluence of the North and South Alouette Rivers. The smaller of the two, the North Alouette, flows from Jacobs Lake south to its confluence with the South Alouette. The river flows over a minor set of falls about halfway from its mouth.

The South Alouette originates on the slopes of Mount Robie Reid and flows into Alouette Lake. After exiting the lake, the river flows west before converging with the North Alouette.

The Alouette produces steelhead, cutthroat, dolly varden, chum salmon, pink salmon, and coho. Not all are open to retain. Check your fishing regulations.

In the spring and summer, the chum fry are present in the river. The cutthroat trout like to feed on these and this can be the best time to fish for cutthroat trout.

Kanaka Creek has a canyon that has small waterfalls, beautiful trees and crystal clear water. You can fish from where it empties into the Fraser River to the 112th Street Bridge.

Fishing is not permitted above the bridge.

Fishing in the spring and summer can be rewarding. The river is home to cutthroat trout.

On 240th Street, at Kanaka Creek, a few blocks north of Lougheed Highway, there is a fish ladder. A viewing area allows easy observation as they make their way up the river to spawn.

Whonnock Lake Park in the eastern part of the City of Maple Ridge is another place for outdoor fun. A new day-use with picnic area, new pathways, better lighting, playgrounds, improved parking and drainage are now all in place at the lake on 112th Avenue, a few blocks east of 272nd Street www.mapleridge. ca/Facilities/Facility/Details/WhonnockLake-114.

There are numerous opportunities for scenic riding in Maple Ridge.

The largest source of trails for those on horseback is Golden Ears Provincial Park, where there are 20 km of gravel or dirt horse trails.

Horses are allowed only on specific trails designated in the park map. www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/golden_ears/goldenears. pdf?v=1466790094942 Day-use stop-over is permitted at the South Beach corral area.

The Golden Ears trails also connect to other trails that run within the City of Maple Ridge, including the trails around Allco Park on 248th Street.

Thanks to the efforts of the Haney Horsemen Association, Maple Ridge has an extensive network of horse trails that wind around new subdivisions.

Another popular area is the trails around Pitt Lake, with scenic half-day rides. There are also a wide variety of trails on the dikes, along the South and North Alouette Rivers, including the Heron Tree Dike Trail, the Fenton Dike Trail and part of the Trans-Canada Equestrian Trail.

Maple Ridge is best known for salmon fishing on local waterways, and sturgeon fishing on the ‘Mighty’ Fraser River.

There are five types of salmon running at different times in the Fraser River, Pitt River and Harrison River. The best salmon fishing is typically between June and November. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has regulations and information for anglers at www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/salmonsaumon-eng.html Sturgeon fishing in the Fraser happens in the spring and fall, and these river kings can be up to 300 pounds and well over 100 years old. It is located off Fern Crescent at about 236th Street in the Alouette River, beside a little park known as Cross’s Cabins Park. Davison’s Pool has long been a popular place in Maple Ridge to hang out during the summer as people relax on the sun-warmed rocks. Port Haney was named after Thomas Haney, a brick maker who owned much of the property that is now downtown. He subdivided his land as the CPR line was being built, and that laid the groundwork for a small commercial and residential area near the railway station and wharf. Spray parks give a nice break for those hot spells that seem to be getting longer. Maple Ridge Park at 23200 Fern Cres. offers the Kinsmen spray park that is great for families, and is situated along the scenic Alouette River. Open on a weather-permitting basis.

The Albion Fairgrounds has a spray park that offers residents and visitors a new kind of design. There are several riding areas in and around Maple Ridge. In Golden Ears Provincial Park, there is in excess of 20 km of cycling trails – classified as cross country or all-mountain. They wind their way through the second growth forest of western red cedar and Douglas fir.

The Woodlot is accessed by a parking lot at the north end of 287th Street. The trails in the Woodlot are built and maintained by a dedicated group of trail builders associated to the Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association. See www.fvmba.com Trail difficulty ranges from intermediate to extreme expert.

Pitt Meadows mainly involves riding on and around the extensive dike system, which extends into Maple Ridge. The trails are primarily flat and wide and can be ridden on any kind of bike.

A relic from Maple Ridge’s past, the Haney Wharf was once important in shipping bricks and other goods from Haney. It is now a scenic landmark and the site of a summer concert series.

The Music on the Wharf series started 20 years ago with what was intended as a one-off outdoor concert, but has become a regular by-donation community entertainment, with concerts twice in July and twice in August featuring everything from jazz and blues to country and western. There will be concerts at at 7:30 p.m. on July 16, July 30 and Aug. 13 and at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27.

Golden Ears Cheesecrafters is both an agri-tourism attraction and foodie delight in Maple Ridge. Run by two sisters who have strong roots and ties to the community, Golden Ears Cheesecrafters is the Fraser Valley’s newest artisan cheese processing facility. City Hall offers a place for discussion, debate and decisions.

When it comes to politics, development, building and planning, it all happens at Maple Ridge city hall.

After Maple Ridge achieved city status in 2014, on the 140th anniversary of the formation of the municipality, the building in the centre of town, at 224th Street and Dewdney Trunk Road, remains the focal point of all big decisions.

Memorial Peace Park is located in the downtown core on 224th Street in Maple Ridge, just north of the Lougheed Highway. It borders the Leisure Centre, the ACT Arts Centre, city hall and the Haney Place Mall. There are

colourful fountains along 224th, a bandstand, and the city cenotaph. It is the site of the Haney Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings from April through October (see haneyfarmersmarket.org), and the site of the

The Maple Ridge Museum and Archives is located in Jim Hadgkiss Park at 22520 – 116th Avenue on the site of the former Port Haney Brick and Tile Company. The brickyard ceased operation in the late 1970s and all the industrial buildings were demolished, leaving only the former manager’s house and the smaller brick company office.

In 1980, when the Haney Bypass was being constructed, the manager’s house and the office at the old brickyard were moved back from the bypass. The museum moved in with the Dewdney Alouette Railway Society as partners in 1984. www.mapleridgemuseum.org/haney-housemuseum Haney House, located on 224th Street, is operated by the museum. Thomas Haney, with the help of Samuel Edge and Daniel Callaghan, built this home for his family in 1883. It was patterned after the Haney family home in Ontario. Neighbourhoods Maple Ridge isn’t just one monolithic city.

It’s a collection of historic neighbourhoods that make up the city.

Port Hammond: One of the first pioneers in Maple Ridge was John McIver, who lent the name of his Hammond farm – Maple Ridge – to the newly incorporated district. In 1925, his

land became the Maple Ridge Golf Course, which is still very much in use today.

The Hammond brothers and the Mohun family started planning for a booming Town of Port Hammond in 1882 when a contract to build the CP Railway to Port Moody would cut through both families’ properties, according

to the City of Maple Ridge’s website. But in 1887 when the CPR line was extended farther west and the terminus ended up being in Vancouver, the boom collapsed. Port Hammond survived the collapse of the boom only to suffer from a major fire in 1926. www.mapleridge.ca/1634/Port-Hammond

Port Haney The Port Haney area in 1900-04, centred on the foot of what’s now 224th Street and River Road, was sparsely populated with few amenities, but with a sense of potential growth. There were brickyards and lumber mills taking advantage of the proximity of the river and rail with a rapidly developing commercial and residential core on Thomas Haney’s townsite.

Yennadon Yennadon was named by one of the first postmasters, after an area in England and is located mainly between the South and North Alouette Rivers, says the City of Maple Ridge.

It included one of the first recreation areas, Maple Ridge Park.

Originally in private hands, the parkland was part of the land package assembled by the B.C. Electric Company, when it decided to build the Alouette Dam east of the park. Katzie First Nation The Katzie are an indigenous people of the Lower Fraser Valley in British Columbia, Canada.

The Katzie historically spoke Halqemeylem, the upriver dialect of Halkomelem, one of the Coast Salish family of languages.

Traditional Katzie territory includes the entire Pitt River watershed, including the Alouette River watershed, the Fraser River and lands adjacent down to Point Roberts, and lands between the Fraser and Boundary Bay. There are approximately 460 members of the Katzie First Nation (their Indian Act-mandated government), but only about 300 live on one of their five reserves near Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

The Katzie also welcomes visitors and is open to sharing its history and culture with Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents.
