‘More Than Just Another Indoor Car Show, It’s The MOTORSPORT EVENT OF THE YEAR!’
Story by: Rolf Norberg The title ‘American Graffiti’ used to be just a name attached to a ‘70s ‘coming of age’ movie. Today, it is so ingrained into our culture to represent not just a period of our lives when we transitioned from youth to adulthood, but so much more. It conjures up many aspects of a carefree time in history, when Americans were between conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, and just before ‘The shot heard round the world’. When George Lucas wrote and directed this landmark film he drew heavily from his own experiences as a youth growing up in southern California. Though he brought in some well known names for the cast such as Ron Howard and ‘Wolfman’ Jack, he relied mainly on fresh, unknown actors and actresses (at that time). With their help George created what many
critics and movie fans alike feel is the best movie that captures the true nostalgic flavour of early ’60s America. Dealing with adolescent issues of the day such as youth gangs, teen romance, street racing and underage drinking, all were intermingled with customarily more enjoyable activities such as hangin’ out at the drive-in, cruising the main drag, checking out the Sock Hop and experiencing music of the day. Revolving around four friends and their adventurous escapades during one late summer night, this serendipitous story takes them through the tribulations that hearken back to a period in time called the ‘Last age of innocence’. Making this cinematic marvel a real gem was a soundtrack which featured some of the best Pop, R&B and Rock and Roll tunes of the day. Though other movies pre-

viously had music tracks played during the film, this was the first attempt at combining numerous songs played throughout the movie, much to the credit of George’s vision of setting the correct atmosphere. One of the reasons that this film received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for best picture in 1973 was its solid acting. The interaction and dialog exchanged between Terry the Toad (Charles Martin Smith) and his bitchin’ babe Debbie (Candy Clark), Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) and Joe the Pharaoh (Bo Hopkins), and John Milner (Paul Le mat) and Carol (McKenzie Phillips) are some of the most memorable scenes in film history. John’s ’32 deuce coupe, Bob Falfa’s ’55 Chevy, Steve Bolander’s ’58 Chevy and even Toad’s Moped were all integral pieces of this film. As a tribute to this iconic movie Langley’s John Van Werkhoven, who is a big fan of ‘Graffiti’, has gone to extremes to recreate the cars and back drops from the movie by having cars built to duplicate those that appeared in this timeless film.

John D’ Agostino/ Celebrity Kustoms
Story by Rolf Norberg There are plenty of so called ‘Masters of Custom Cars’ vying for position in the battle to be King Of The Hill. When you weed out the builders who also work on monster trucks and stretch limos, as well as those ‘Masters’ that don’t actually design or perform the work themselves, you are left with just a handful of true Custom Kings. If the amount of awards accumulated for their efforts is a means of measuring their abilities (they say the proof is in the pudding), then it’s very possible that custom car builder John D’Agostino could be titled ‘Leader Of The Pack’. As the owner of Celebrity Kustoms based in Discovery Bay, California, this world-renowned stylist has proven that his wide range of abilities stand for themselves. Not one to pump out a dozen cars a year, John uses his expertise and raw talent to build customs, usually investing many hours in a build, with the accent on quality, turning out only one or two cars a year. In his earlier days John was immersed in car culture, gathering inspiration from building model cars and reading the pages of Rod & Custom Magazine. Growing up in northern California he personally witnessed some of the early iconic customs, built by the ‘pioneer’ builders of the time, cruising at the local hot spots. In high school John stylized a ’56 Chev that did well in car shows. He was also able to hang out at the custom car shops of Joe Baylon and George Barris. All these factors have led him to a career in designing and building custom cars where he has reached great success. You would think that the cars he produces are strictly built for car shows but most of his clientele prefer to drive their cars. John likes it that way
and builds his cars to be driven, and not be just statues on wheels. Though Celebrity Kustoms is not a high volume producer of cars, there are dozens of incredible creations that have
been transformed in his shop, some going to actual celebrities. Being a huge Elvis fan John built not one but two ’59 Cadillacs (Elvis l and Elvis ll) as a tribute to the King of Rock and Roll. The first one was the first custom car to cost $1 million to build!

Names such as Emerald Mist, Midnight Sensation and Firestar add character to his ’58 Cadillac, ‘51 Merc and ‘61 T-Bird respectively. Other customs which standout are the ‘40 Mercury Stardust, ’53 Cadillac Marilyn, ‘53 Mercury Royal Tahition, ’40 Cadillac Sophia, ’64 Olds Venician, ‘61 Olds Aladdin, ’59 Cadillac Cadster, and one of his most recent builds, a ’58 Packard roadster titled ‘Rita’ (honouring actress Rita Hayworth) is a sensational piece of art.
John’s creations have garnered recognition worldwide and his achievements are numerous. His list of awards are so overwhelming we can only list a few of the most noteworthy here, including; The Harry Bradley Design Achievement Award, Good Guys Custom d’Elegance of the Year Award, 40th Anniversary Mattel Hot Wheels Legends Signature Series award, Top Ten Autos Award by Rod & Custom Magazine, Trend Setter of the Year award at the San Francisco Motorama, and so many more.
This includes features such as Chopped Tops, Channeled and Sectioned bodies and any other traditional major modifications. Wheels, tires, grill, chrome trim and paint are also a factor. John will attending the BC Classic & Custom Car Show (Friday April 20 and Saturday April 21 only) at the Fraser Valley Trade & Exhibition Centre, where he will be presenting his ‘Crystal Award of Excellence’ to the vehicle most deserving of this special trophy. What may be titled one of our first extreme sports, it is difficult to compare to other disciplines. But let’s try to put this into perspective. Today, a Nitro Methane-powered Top Fuel Dragster produces more horsepower than a NASCAR Stock Car, while idling! One engine in a Top Fueler produces a staggering 10,000 horsepower. That’s more than the entire field in the Daytona 500! When this type of power is unleashed, it is unlike any other sensory overload. This indescribable experience cannot be relayed over the television screen. You have to experience it to believe it! For the first time in the Lower Mainland, fans of today’s big pump, dual mag Top Fuel racers will have a chance to take part in a demonstration of their intense capability. A race team based out of Calgary, Alberta is set to bring their new Top Fuel Dragster to the Fraser Valley to give us a taste of what we would experience at one of the National Hot Rod Association’s national events. The main driving force behind this three member family operation is David Fedorowich, who first started racing Fuel Dragsters at the age of 19 years old. With a vast knowledge and experience of racing behind him, he and his family members, son Nik and wife Kelly, are ready to

Kelly Fedorowich Set To Become The Fastest Woman In Canada! not only compete on the race track but provide demonstrations as part of their motorsports entertainment package. Their Dark Side Racing shop, situated in Calgary is home to their recently constructed, state-of-the-art Top Fuel dragster which is capable of delivering an incredible 10,000 horsepower. Having a complete in-house facility to work out of is very advantageous to this team. Their DSR race shop handles many custom projects related to the racing industry. From entire engine construction and tuning, machining tasks, chassis and suspension work, carbon fiber repair, and much more, are all performed in this facility. Proclaimed as Western Canada’s only Top Fuel Dragster, the DSR team are very active, not just during the summer racing season but almost year round as they are involved in Car Shows and live demonstration ‘Fire-Up’s at various functions. Some of these ‘Fire-Up’s are in support of their many sponsors who have come onboard. When asked what this car runs on, the correct answer should be sponsorship dollars as opposed to Nitro Methane. Luckily this team has the marketing savvy skills to promote themselves and attract sponsorship. With Kelly at the helm, they have secured sponsorship from; Castrol Canada, Fram Autolite, Black Jack Road House, Prostate Calgary, Leah Magnum Productions and Zoom Painting.
In addition DSR has come up with a rather novel sponsorship program where the average race fan has a chance to get involved with their racing effort. They are offering a Donate-a-Drum sponsorship opportunity which allows anyone wishing to become part of the action to purchase a drum of Nitro Methane to fuel their dragster for a price of $1500. In exchange, their name is included on the car and listed on their sponsor list. While all these factors work to draw attention to this race team, perhaps Kelly’s desire to become Canada’s Fastest Woman will give them the attention they deserve. Starting in the spring of 2017, the campaign to elevate her to this status has generated considerable press and helps her to reach that goal to pilot their dragster and achieve the desired speed required to reach that mark. In the same vane as other women drag racers such as Shirley Shahan, Shirley Muldowney, and now 2017 NHRA Top Fuel Dragster Champion Brittany Force, Kelly may very well be on the verge of becoming the Fastest Women in Canada.
