Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce has stead­fast roots in the Mission business community, dating all the way back to when the town of Mission was in its first year of existence. Celebrating its 125th birthday in 2018, the Mission City and District Board of Trade was created by Harry Brown French in 1893. The newly created Board of Trade immediately took out advertisements in all newspapers within a 300 mile radius, offering a package of free land, free water, free power, property tax exemptions and, most extraordinary of all, the Board also offered to construct factories, mills or other commercial buildings for potential industrialists at no cost whatsoever! The Chamber of Commerce has operated as: the Mission City & District Board of Trade until 1961; the Mission City & District Chamber of Commerce in 1970; and the Mission & District Chamber of Commerce in 1979. Today’s Chamber of Commerce continues to serve the businesses of Mission and areas east to the Harrison River and north to the end of the valley of the Stave. It is a strong advocate for economic development in the region and promotes area tourism to visitors and locals alike. With a focus on supporting business though advocacy, benefits and connections, improving economic development in the region, the Mission Chamber’s membership has reflected the community. From agriculture, forestry, manufacturing and retail, the Chamber The Chamber has provided many memorable community events, such as: the Business Excellence Awards, the Soapbox Derby, the Bald Eagle Festival, and the Fraser Valley Trade Show. In 2018, the Chamber will celebrate the 35th Candlelight Parade, the largest in BC. Pioneers then…Pioneers now, the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce connects, influences and builds prosperity in Mission.

Board of Trade (BOT) was created by Harry Brown French, its first president. To attract residents, the Board offered packages of land, water, power, property tax exemptions, and to build lumber mills, all free of charge.

1927  After 17 years of negotiation CP Rail agreed to replace the original train-exclusive bridge to accommodate vehicles

1947  BOT Membership becomes the second largest in B.C., giving us a big voice in regards to municipal, provincial, and federal policy review.

1946  The BOT suggests hosting a Strawberry Festival as well as a Soap Box derby to be held in summertime, which draws hundreds of visitors from all over the Fraser Valley.

1957  The BOT is given approval to establish the Western Canada Soap Box Derby Association, and so begins the annual Mission Soap Box Derby.

1963   The Chamber sets up a 24 hour Tourist Bureau in the foyer of the Bellevue Hotel.

1971  The Chamber becomes the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce (MRCC).

1973  The MRCC moves to their present site at St Mary’s Park,. 1984  The First Mission Candlelight Parade is hosted by the MRCC, featuring “Miss Mission”

2001  The Chamber and Visitors Centre move into a new modern building at the same location in St. Mary’s Park.

2002  Oyama Sister Garden is created and a long-lasting relationship between Mission, B.C. and Oyama, Japan is born.

2013  Ron Leger becomes the recipient of the very first President‘s Award which recognizes an local champion within the business community.

2014  Mission Chamber participates in the Fraser River Sustainability Report, urging the Federal, Provincial, and First Nations governing bodies to collaborate on long term strategies to maintain the Fraser River port .

2017  The Chamber Government Affairs Committee brings federal opposition leader, Andrew Scheer, to speak to Members on pressing issues affecting B.C. and local business.

HISTORY OUR STORY In 1891, the Townsite of Mission is laid out by land-developer James Welton Horne (after whom three downtown streets are named). Horne arranges an auction for these properties and dubs it the “Great Land Sale”. The following year, the Corporation of the District of Mission is formed. The “Corporation” surrounds but does not include the Townsite of Mission (the area spanning the Fraser River up to 14th Ave. and from Heritage Park to Cedar Street.) In 1922, the Townsite of Mission is renamed the Corporation of the Village of

Mission. As a Village, it will now be run by an elected Board of Commissioners. The first Municipal Hall is built (in 1929) on Main Street (present-day First Avenue). This building housed both branches of local government at the time: the Corporation of the District of Mission and the Corporation of the Village of Mission. Fast forward to 1950 and the Corporation of the Village of Mission becomes the Corporation of the Village of Mission City. Eight years later, in 1958, the Corporation of the Village of Mission City becomes

the Corporation of the Town of Mission City. It is one of the first Villages in B.C. to change status from a Village to a Town. As a Town, Mission City may now elect a Mayor and council. In 1969, the Corporation of the District of Mission and the Corporation of the Town of Mission City amalgamate to become the District of Mission. In 1974, a new Municipal Hall is built at the current location on Stave Lake St., where local government operations continue today.

Silverdale is a semi-rural neighbourhood of the District of Mission, British Columbia, Canada c. 40km east of Vancouver on the east bank of the Stave River at its confluence with the Fraser. Noted for its historic Italian Canadian community, its economy was farming, fishing and logging based until the general suburbanization of Fraser Valley life in the 1960s and ‘70s. Of its Italian community, notable offspring include Phil Gaglardi, former BC Highways minister, and speed-skater Eden Donatelli. Silverdale is also notable as the site of Canada’s first train robbery, by the “Gentleman Bandit” Billy Miner, and it is there he is supposed to have first used the polite “Hands Up!” in the course of the robbery.

The Powerhouse at Stave Falls has a way of engaging a wide variety of visitors, from individuals to families and school groups. With an amazing Tesla coil electricity demonstration and many interactive and historic displays, guests can take a walk back through time to see how power has helped build our province.

FISHING DO YOU DARE TO FISH FOR A PREHISTORIC MONSTER? A fishing trip on the Fraser River is an experience you will not forget. The largest sturgeon caught on record was caught on the Fraser River and weighed an estimated 1,100 pounds (498.9 kg) and measured 12 feet, 4 inches! Anglers fish for sturgeon year round and the Fraser River has proven to be the most consistent fishing to be found. Giant white sturgeon and five species of salmon are the Fraser River’s best-known catches, and the many lakes and tributaries around Mission — including Sayres Lake and Stave Lake — also provide rainbow trout. You can introduce your family to fishing at the Sun Valley Trout Park or Trout Creek Farm U Catch. If you aren’t a regular fisherman, then check out Mission’s Borrow a Rod Program. You can borrow a rod, reel and tackle box for up to a week from the Mission Visitor Centre, located at 34033 Lougheed Highway. Call 604-826-6914. This program is perfect for new anglers and is sponsored by the Fresh Water Fisheries Society of B.C. 14

CLARKE THEATRE MISSION FOLK MUSIC FESTIVAL

We’re pleased to welcome audiences to the 31st Annual Mission Folk Music Festival taking place July, 20, 21, 22, 2018 in the beautiful Fraser River Heritage Park. Be sure to check out the unique collection of local, national, and international artists for a weekend of quality music and entertainment. The Festival begins with the Friday night Community Celebration and continues through Saturday and Sunday featuring concerts, workshops, dances, children and family programming, Artisan Market, Food trucks, and weekend camping. Dust off your dancing shoes for the square dance, bring your voice for the festival choir, and tune up your instruments for the jam sessions and workshops available free to attendees. The Clarke Theatre opened in 1997 to great fanfare and it is still the heart of the arts in Mission. Known as much for some incredible national artists such as Burton Cummings and Gord Downy as it is for local talent and emerging dance choreographers. A 702 seat facility, owned and operated by the Mission Public School District, the theatre has also been the training ground for young artists such as Mission’s own Carly Rae Jepsen who first hit the stage at the age of ten. The school community has uses the facility for seasonal concerts and dance presentations as well as for their annual musicals. Not content to simply function as a theatre, the entire Heritage Park Centre has become a meeting place for all things cultural such as the Ukrainian Festival, Diwali Celebrations and numerous community events. The cafeteria and lobby areas double as gathering places for the Mission Winter Farmer’s Market, the Mission Arts Council Christmas Craft Show and the Mission Coffee House series. The Clarke Theatre attracts audience members from throughout the valley and has earned a reputation for presenting the best that Canada has to offer. ABBEY WESTMINSTER ABBEY ATTRACTS THOUSANDS OF VISITORS EACH YEAR TO ITS SERENE PERCH HIGH ABOVE THE FRASER VALLEY. Westminster Abbey is a Benedictine monastery of priests and brothers who dedicate their lives to God. The iconic bell tower can be seen and the bells heard from across the Fraser Valley. The monks ring many of the 10 bells daily before Mass, and for 15 minutes before Mass and Vespers on Sundays.

The church is 162 feet long by 110 feet wide and contains 64 stained glass windows. The rainbow coloured glass creates windows that stand 22 feet high around the perimeter of the church. The dome of coloured glass rises 50 feet above the altar, allowing shafts of light to stream into the church. Visitors are welcome, and asked to follow the dress code of no shorts or overly exposed skin, when entering the Abbey Church.

The Stave West Forest & Recreation Area is a collaborative initiative between the District of Mission, Kwantlen First Nation, and the Province of British Columbia to develop family-friendly outdoor recreation within Mission’s Municipal Forest and Tree Farm Licence #26. With new campgrounds opening this summer there are more opportunities than ever to enjoy camping

in a rustic forest setting whether that’s on the shore of beautiful Sayres Lake, tucked in the trees along the Stave Reservoir at the Kearsley Creek campground with facilities for equestrians, or at the Rock Creek campground offering a staging area for off-road vehicles.

THE MISSION CANDLELIGHT PARADE

has become a holiday tradition not to be missed. The annual event, brought to the community by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is one of the largest night time parades in Western Canada. The parade attracts an estimated crowd of more than 15,000 spectators and contains around 80 floats that range from school marching bands to businesses and non-profit organizations. Highlights of the parade include beautiful floats, flamboyant march-

ing bands, lovely vocal performances, dancers, a lot of great giveaways, classic cars, fire trucks and police vehicles. Floats are illuminated with thousands of lights that impress the audience in the dark. Of course, the highlight of the evening is the arrival of Santa himself. Kids cheer and yell as the jolly old elf makes his appearance. This years marks the 35th annual parade which takes place on Dec. 7, 2018. The parade runs right through Downtown Mission on First Ave.

Boardwalks and old growth forest lead you to a vantage point that offers an eagle eye view across the valley, giving you serious photographic bragging rights.
