OUR LADY PEACE/MATTHEW GOOD For the first time since 2012, Cirque du Soleil returns to Abbotsford with Crystal, a show exploring the artistic
limits of ice. This is a first in the company’s 33-year history. “The show will surprise many of our fans due
to the fact that we combine acrobatics and skating together; it’s not limited to just one,” said tour publicist Julie
Desmarais. In Crystal, Cirque du Soleil brings their signature acrobatic style to the ice. The collision
of these two worlds showcases disciplines such as swinging trapeze and aerial straps alongside synchro, freestyle and extreme skating on ramps. “We wanted to bring our touch to a traditional ice show,” said Desmarais. “It’s very modern and contemporary.” Cirque du Soleil’s Crystal creates a fantastical world through its story, set design, costumes, and projections. And this show introduces another new element for Cirque du Soleil— covers of popular songs. Woven throughout the soundtrack, pop songs are added to enhance key moments in the narrative, as well as stir spectators’ emotions. The character Crystal is a dreamer who feels misunderstood and out of place in her reality. Venturing away from her frozen pond she falls through the ice and enters an underwater world of her imagination. From her adventure, Crystal learns sometimes you have to look at things sideways to appreciate them. In Act One, Crystal becomes caught in an exaggerated version of her life and meets her Reflection, who spreads darkness all around with the ink of a pen. Crystal begins discovering her voice through her writing and, as she explores her new talent, brings all sorts of interesting characters to life. Here she creates two jugglers who execute an incredible set of skills while on skates before being joined by acrobats and skaters performing intricate choreography.

Here, Crystal meets a suitor and together they blur the boundary between ice and sky with an aerial straps/skating duet. The story ends with a breakthrough and Crystal is reunited with her family and community. A number of Canadian professional figure skaters are involved with the show, including Canadian national silver medalist and Olympian Shawn Sawyer, who skates in the show, and Canadian and World Champion Kurt Browning, who helped coach the show’s
performers. Fusing circus arts and ice skating, Crystal invites the audience to suspend reality and glide into a world springing to colourful life with impressive visual projections and world-class performances. This breakthrough ice experience is not just an ice show; it’s the first experience on ice from Cirque du Soleil. From April 11 through 15, Cirque du Soleil’s Crystal stops in Abbotsford at Abbotsford Centre. Remove chicken from marinade, discard marinade. Make spaces in the vegetables for chicken parts throughout the pan. Roast for 20 mins., then toss the potato and cauliflower to ensure they’re cooking evenly, and return the pan to the oven for 20 mins. more (40 min. total roasting time), until chicken and vegetables are cooked through. When chicken and vegetables are cooked, top with garnishes of your choice — we used cilantro and scattered pickled red onions rings all over. Serve n the pan accompanied by raita and warmed naan bread. You could also use purchased tzatziki, just add the cumin and coriander to it as you see in the recipe. Pickled Onions - optional Slice onions as thinly as possible, then cram them into a large Mason jar. Pour the sugar and vinegar into a small pot and bring to a boil with the salt and pepper. Pour the hot syrup over the onions; cover them and if time allows, let rest overnight in the refrigerator. Because sugar and vinegar are such great preservatives, these pickled onions will last indefinitely in your refrigerator. They’re at their best after a day or two in your fridge, once their flavours have had a chance to mature. Raita - optional Using your hands and over a bowl or sink, squeeze as much water as you can out of the cucumber. Mix all ingredients in medium bowl. Season to taste with salt. Chill raita, covered, until ready to serve.

Sheet Pan Chicken Tikka INGREDIENTS For the chicken 2” piece of ginger, peeled 4 cloves of garlic 1 jalapeno, leave seeds in for more heat ½ cup whole-milk plain yogurt 1tsp. salt ½ tsp. chili powder or cayenne ½ tsp. ground turmeric ½ tsp. ground cumin ¾ tsp. granulated sugar 1 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. of one of the following (I’ve listed it in order of my own preference, Monsoon Coast is my favourite): • Tandoori • Garam Masala • Moghul Curry 2 lbs. chicken thighs, drumsticks or halved chicken breasts For the Vegetables: 3 tbsp. olive oil 4 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled if desired, cut into 1” chunks 1 small or half a very large head cauliflower, cut into 1”-wide florets ½ tsp. kosher salt
½ tsp. cumin seeds Pickled Onions (optional) 2 lge. red onions 1 cup sugar 1 cup red wine vinegar A sprinkle or two Salt and Pepper Raita (optional) 1 cup plain yogurt ½ grated English hothouse cucumber, or 2 small Persian hothouse cucumbers 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro 1 ttbsp. chopped green onions (or finely grate a ¼ red onion) ½ tsp. ground coriander ½ tsp. ground cumin METHOD: Combine ginger, garlic, jalapeno, yogurt, salt, spices and sugar in food processor, chop until blended. Place mixture in a freezer bag, add chicken pieces and toss to coat evenly. Marinate for 15 mins. or up to a day in the fridge, smoosh it around so the marinade is evenly distributed. Xai was one of many Lao refugees that fled their homes in the late 1970s and through the sponsorship of Rob’s parents and friends from Bakerview Church, 18-year-old Xai, clutching a paper bag stuffed with all his worldly possessions, his parents and siblings arrived in Abbotsford in 1980. The timing coincided with Rob beginning his full-time work on the farm, and he set to teaching Xai about Canadian farming. These two self-proclaimed “brothers from another mother” have worked side by side for 38 years, first on the farm and now at the market, but occasionally Xai still sneaks
over to the barns to visit his precious piggies!
