Commitment to quality products and workmanship When you walk in the front door of Laminate Warehouse you immediately get the feeling that you are dealing with a company that has your best interest at heart. All of their products are beautifully displayed with visible price tags on each piece. Knowledgeable sales staff, professionally trained installers and guaranteed lowest prices are some of the standard policies that have helped make this locally owned company a leader in the flooring industry. Owners, Shayne Saunders and his wife YT, have built their business based on a no-nonsense approach to serving customers. Their reputation means everything to them and that shows in how they treat consumers. No games, no gimmicks – just great service and a commitment to quality workmanship. “We believe in what we sell and how we sell it,” says Saunders. Laminate Warehouse offers a huge selection of laminate, vinyl and engineered flooring at guaranteed lowest prices. They also carry transitions, trim and baseboard to help finish the installation. “We only carry top quality products that are

“We believe in what we sell and how we sell it” Shayne Saunders backed by the best warranties in the industry and we choose our suppliers carefully to ensure the best possible value to our customers,” adds Saunders. With over 200 different types of laminate flooring to choose from, Laminate Warehouse is sure to have the right product to fit any budget and the right colour to satisfy even the most discern-

ing consumer. They carry top quality factory – direct products from all around the world including Canada, Germany and the USA. “How a product is made is more important than where it is made and we take an educated approach to selling all the products we carry,” claims Saunders. The flooring experts at Laminate Warehouse are happy to show consumers the different types of products that are available, so they can make an informed decision without the high pressure sales tactics that are commonplace in many retail stores. Being the local “Uniboard Authorized Dealer” and buying direct from the factory in Quebec, allows Laminate Warehouse to offer unbeatable value on Canadian made laminate. “We sell our Canadian made laminate for a lower price than other retailers sell inferior products from overseas. The Uniboard line is a fantastic product that has an AC4 Wear Layer for maximum durability and a Waxed Edge for moisture protection, and it carries a 35 Year Residential Warranty,” says Saunders. Uniboard offers core board panels that are ECC Certified, Carb Compliant, Floor Score Certified (FSC) and contribute to LEED points. “We are very proud to have been chosen by Uniboard to represent their line of quality products that are made right here in Canada,” adds Saunders. The ECC certification (Eco-Certified Composite) is a voluntary standard developed by the Composite Panel Association (CPA). To be ECC certified, the mill must first meet the strict emission requirement of CARB Phase 2 for composite wood products. They must

then comply with at least three of the five CPA requirements. The five criteria are: Carbon Footprint, Local Resources, Recycled Content, Sustainability and Responsible Wood Sourcing. The Uniboard mill, in Mont-Laurier, Quebec, has met all five of these requirements! Along with the Canadian made Uniboard series, Laminate Warehouse also offers a huge selection of German made laminates, from Inhaus and Krono that come in a wide variety of styles and have an AC5 wear layer for maximum durability and all at guaranteed lowest prices. Not only does Laminate Warehouse carry top quality products that are easy to install for the do-it-yourself customer, but they also offer professional installation by uniformed, licensed & insured installers that are covered by WCB. “The big advantage with our installation teams is consistent results. Our installers work directly for us, so satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.” says Saunders. For the people who prefer to do the job themselves, they offer sound advice and free on-site consultations. They will even lend you the tools to get the job done right. Laminate Warehouse currently has locations in Maple Ridge, Langley and Chilliwack and more expansion is in the works. With a solid reputation for treating customers right it is no surprise that they continue to grow. “We are currently looking for the right individuals to open stores in other areas and look forward to helping them build their own successful businesses,” says Saunders. Visit a showroom near you, and see how premium products, guaranteed pricing, expert advice and quality workmanship have helped to establish Laminate Warehouse as a leader in the flooring industry. When it comes to flooring, Laminate Warehouse has you covered.

TIPS

by Greg Sheppard

1 Induction ranges

have really grown in popularity. You can now get the performance of gas with the convenience smooth top electric!

2 If you have back pain

AND generally sleep on your back, a firmer mattress could be really helpful.

3 If you’re shopping for

televisions, consider the newer OLED models.

4 Traeger pellet smokers

are a great addition to your outdoor cooking setup. Just set it and forget it, you’ll have amazing smoked flavour.

5 Bring an advertisement to our shop and we’ll match any price advertised in Canada.

Upgrade your home with Haney Sewing and Sound You might say Greg Sheppard knows a little something about home appliances. He’s been working at Haney Sewing and Sound since he was nine years old. He watched his father and uncle run the business, and heard of how his grandfather started it in 1969. Sheppard has an impressive wealth of knowledge on stereo systems, televisions, and any home appliance, even for someone who has spent his whole life working in the industry. He, however, isn’t just a walking Google search. Sheppard offers something the online world can’t quite match: customized advice. “Our staff has been here for a long time, but there’s more to it than just knowing all the specifications and facts about products,” said Sheppard. “A customer will walk in and tell me how the appliances should fit into their life. My job is to find out what works best for them based on their needs and budget.” When Sheppard says you’ll receive quality customer service at Haney Sewing and Sound, he means it. The store is open seven days a week and the same staff members work there on most days. If customers visit the store and chat with him on Monday, they can call back the next day and be almost certain they can continue their conversation. “One hundred per cent of the time, a human answers the phone,” Sheppard said. The Sheppards have made a point of giving Maple Ridge residents incentives to shop local. Haney Sewing and Sound is part of a nation-wide buying group, which means the store can easily compete with prices found in big box and online stores. Sheppard is so confident about his prices, he offers a 30-day price-match

guarantee: if customers find the same product advertised for a lower price anywhere in Canada, even online, Haney Sewing and Sound will match that price. In fact, Haney Sewing and Sound will even stand by the guarantee for 30 days after a purchase. All customers have to do is bring a copy of the advertisement in and their receipt and Sheppard will refund the difference. “We just try to encourage people to shop local,” said Sheppard. If there’s one thing that can match Sheppard’s passion for old-fashioned quality customer service, it’s his love of modern home upgrades. The newest in home theatre technology is the new Organic LED (OLED) television, said Sheppard, which is an upgrade from the older plasma and ordinary LED technology on “just about every front.” According to the home appliance expert, OLED televisions offer better contrast, accuracy, detail, among others – just about every aspect important to the home cinematic experience. For example, scenes of space in the Rogue One Star Wars film will look inky blue or purple on an older television model, said Sheppard. On a newer OLED screen, however, space will look jet-black. That means ships and planets will ‘pop out’ more. The TV offers better immersion and depth. Even real-life scenes, like the Super Bowl, will look noticeably better on an OLED screen. “OLEDs have been out for a few years,” said Sheppard, “but they’ve been expensive up until fall of last year and now are becoming more reasonable.”

Another tech upgrade Sheppard is excited about: home automation. He’s seeing more interest from simpler automation, such as one button for controlling all the blinds in the living room, to fancier set-ups. If you wanted, you could set your home up such that when your garage door opens between 5-6 p.m. on a weekday, a couple of changes happen: the television will switch on to Global News, your home stereo system will kick in with classic rock, and the kitchen range lights will turn on. The sky’s the limit with home automation, said Sheppard. Other examples include setting different modes for your home’s lighting system and controlling the modes with your smartphone. People who often host dinner parties might want an ‘entertaining mode,’ for example, with mood lighting in the living room switched on and reading lights switched off. “We can take care of all of that, from project planning to consultation and wiring,” said Sheppard. People who bought older homes are in luck. “Many aspects of home automation systems can be retrofitted,” he added. One of Sheppard’s favourite parts of the job is seeing the business evolve and making changes to grow with the latest industry trends. “It’s nice to meet people who have been dealing here for years and years. I’ve even met customers of my grandfather’s.” And if Sheppard’s current work is any indication, he, too, will help Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows residents upgrade their homes for years to come.

TIPS

for purchasing a pre-owned vehicle

1 Get a PRE PURCHASE

INSPECTION! Take the vehicle you are interested in purchasing to a neutral certified automotive facility. This will give you an unbiased idea of what kind of shape the car is in.

2 Repair history. You want to be able to see all or most of these records.

3 Be smart about your

choice. The internet is a wonderful tool for research purposes. Take your time and do your due diligence.

4 Take it on a

substantial Road Test. This means not just 10 minutes. See if you can take it for a few hours. This gives the vehicle more of a chance to show it’s true colors.

5 Heather’s tip -

Red cars are fun!

Open, Honest and Skilled = Busy This is an equation that Haney Automotive knows well. All one has to do is drive by the parking lot at the Selkirk Avenue location to see it’s true... but this team doesn’t sit back and rest on their laurels. The new motto for 2018 is “How can we serve even BETTER?” The News sat down with Brandon Zimmerman (Owner) to get his thoughts on Haney Automotive, busy times and what the word is on vehicles on the road today. Brandon - 2018 is starting off with a bang at Haney Automotive. We are thrilled to be back at it after the holidays and are always so grateful for such amazing customers. First off we want our customers to know that this team is always striving for new levels of service both inside the bays of the shop and in the office. Plain and simple ...This is top priority! We are a busy garage. Each year I watch us grow and my wife (Heather) and I are extremely proud of the work that is being done here. Our mechanics are extremely skilled and never cease to amaze us even on the craziest of days. As owners we try to keep these days on point and focused and extremely productive. For those who may not know yet we have added another new member to The Shop Team. Mark Morrey came on board in November and has been an amazing asset. The Garage has never been so clean and so organized. He is master of all things right now making sure that these busy work days out in the bays run smoothly and efficiently. He is a hard worker and fits right into The Haney

Automotive family. It’s really cool that the family is growing. New ideas and game plans grow with it!!! We try not to sit idle here... business is also about moving with the times but that can be a fine line when trying to keep our same hands on, honest and open approach. No matter what... that’s the stuff that really counts. We just keep doing our thing here and loving every minute of it. I know I’ve said this before but Maple Ridge is a great community and a great place to run a business. Just like us here at Haney Automotive the vehicle industry is trying to make it easier and more efficient for you as well. Vehicles today have some easier

maintenance schedules with your newer models. This will have you visiting us less often. I get it ... this is a great feature. Manufacturer’s oil change intervals can be up to 12,000 km and this trend continues with driveline services as well(that means transmission and differential fluids). Welcome to the world of synthetic oil! If you follow these recommended maintenance schedules properly then life as a car owner can be a whole lot easier. BUT.... with all of this newer technology there also isn’t any room for neglect. If you snooze you will lose! In other words the bills get bigger. So, if you are in a new vehicle or thinking about a new vehicle then it is imperative that you stay on top of maintenance. This is always something that I recommend anyway. There are some exciting new models on the road today as well as some great oldies but goodies. The roads are made for everyone. And the bottom line is we are here to help when you need us. Call and book your appointment today!!!!!

TIPS

1 Make sure the

service provider is credentialed. Don’t be afraid to ask.

2 Tools, equipment

and working spaces should be clean and clear of clutter.

3 Develop a

relationship and build a rapport by booking with the same service provider.

5 Remember, your

Cloud 9 Beautique: A Business Fueled by Passion Originally launched as Cloud Nine Nail Bar in November 2013, Cloud 9 Beautique in downtown Maple Ridge started as a chic nail bar. The business quickly evolved into a full-service esthetic destination and MediSpa, and has further expanded into a dynamic training centre. Cloud 9 Beautique is the proud co-creation of Chantal Schutz and Dr. Daniel Gouws. Schutz is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA) and a passionate entrepreneur. Following a long career in corporate finance and accounting, in a primarily male dominated world, Schutz was prompted to make a career change, giving her the opportunity to focus on women and an industry aimed at helping them. Cloud 9 presented an opportunity to make a change. Gouws spent many years as a family doctor and an Occupational Medicine Expert and has spent the last 15 years indulging his roots as an artist, becoming a skilled and highly sought-after Cosmetic Injector. Medical esthetics is an excellent bridge between the medical sciences and artistic expression. After many years at his location in west Maple Ridge, operating at Cross Road Skin Health & Laser Hair Removal Clinic, Gouws and his team saw an opportunity to broaden their reach and moved to the Cloud Nine Nail Bar space on 226th Street in Maple Ridge in 2014. Following the successful transition, Gouws amalgamated his esthetics practice with the nail bar and the business became Cloud 9 Beautique Inc. “I’ve always been passionate about helping women achieve their dreams and goals throughout my career,” Schutz said. The changes in the business over the years are a reflection of Schutz’s commitment and responsiveness to customer needs. “When we first opened our doors we focused on nails,” Schutz added. “Clients quickly started asking for more and more beauty services. They liked our professional attitude, attention to detail and, most importantly, our dedication to a clean, safe, and healthy environment.” Today, Cloud 9 offers an entire range of

beauty and medically directed esthetics services from nails, waxing, lash extensions and hair services, to laser hair removal, cosmetic injections and fillers, medically directed skin care, including facials, medical needling, skin tightening and skin and scar rejuvenation. Cloud 9 lives up to its name. “Clients tell us that when they leave, they feel like they are on cloud nine. They know our staff are entirely committed to providing them the best service possible,” Schutz said. Says Gouws: “There are a lot of misconceptions and a lack of consumer knowledge when it comes to esthetic medical injections and skin treatments. Our team of trained and certified medical estheticians, pride ourselves on making client education and knowledge a focus of our practice.” In early 2016, Cloud 9 expanded the physical location, taking over two retail spaces next door to the original nail bar. The location is beautiful – bright, clean, spacious and elegant, the quintessential “Tiffany Box.” The warm and professional staff and attention to detail in the blue and white décor contribute to a sense of a calming oasis. Clients can expect reasonably priced services, and no compromise in the areas of professionalism, expertise, and cleanliness. As the business evolved, Schutz and her team noticed that there was a was a significant gap in the marketplace for training. Finding well-trained, competent staff who shared their values related to excellence, customer service and kindness became a challenge. Schutz and Gouws share a passion for lifelong learning and it seemed like an exciting and challenging next step to open Academy by Cloud 9, a training academy allowing Cloud 9 Beautique to become a leader in training and shaping the next generation of Nail Techs. In September 2017, the training division was launched. The program includes all aspects of manicures, pedicures, UV Gel extension, waxing, tinting, salon business management, communication, and customer

service, as well as a brief introduction to Medical Esthetics and Injections. The first five students graduated in early 2018 with a new cohort starting in April. It is a 400-hour program that teaches students all components of nail care, waxing and general esthetics services. Jacynyhe Richards is the Director of Education for the training academy. Richards has more than 40 years of experience working directly in salons, salon ownership, and training students. She has a passion for teaching her students and is excited about the future of Academy by Cloud 9. Richards is from Quebec, where the beauty industry is fully regulated and students are required to complete a two-year program to work within the industry. Students at the academy are motivated people looking to make a career change, and who love the beauty and fashion industry. The desire to make people feel good is also a shared trait amongst applicants. Throughout the program students have the opportunity to work within a full-service, operating salon. This gives them a chance to quickly translate the skills they are learning in the classroom to a real-life hands-on practical experience. The program at the academy is based on the core values of the business. “Our core values are simple: kindness, excellence, and cleanliness. People are the cornerstone to our success and this value is evident in all areas of the business and the academy,” Schutz said. Gouws echoes these sentiments. “We care about the people we serve. From our staff, who deserve a great working environment, to our students, who deserve a reasonably priced program with opportunity for hands-on training, to our clients, who can rest assured that they will leave feeling better than when they walked in. We live our values.” Cloud 9 Beautique is located on 226th Street. The business offers a robust online booking service at www.cloud9beautique. com Those interested in the Academy by Cloud 9 can find program registration information on the website. The business is also active on social media and can be found on Facebook and Instagram.

HEATING & SHEET METAL

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

by Ron McMyn, co-owner

1 Choose the right

contractor, someone with a proven record of service and reliability.

2 Make sure your

contractor carries all the parts for your heating or cooling solution.

3 Make sure your

contractor can answer calls and be there for your warranty issues.

4 Ensure that your

contractor has licensed and bonded service technicians and quality installers.

5 Pick a contractor with

a wide selection of products so they can give you the one that’s right for your home.

Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal has been servicing the Fraser Valley for the past 30 years.

Not only heating at Big Valley Heating and Sheet Metal Big Valley Heating And Sheet Metal Ltd.’s Ron McMyn has seen dramatic changes in his company over the last few decades, as it’s risen from a small operation to a large-scale business. Ron McMyn and Marlow Kirkwood have owned big valley since 1986. “We’ve gone from two guys to over 30 guys,” Ron said. Ron said the key to the business’ success has been an emphasis on serving customers’ needs. “It’s good customer service and good quality work,” he said. “It’s mostly just treating the customer fairly.” Big Valley has built its reputation by standing behind its products and quickly responding to customers’ concerns.

“We do everything possible for the customer, if you’re not happy we take care of it” “It’s always being available, always being reachable,” he said. “If they have an issue, they come in, the service guys are there right away.”

While heating buildings is still key, cooling products and air filtration products are also becoming more important parts of the business. Big Valley offers customized solutions that are perfect for those who need certain rooms kept cool, those who are bothered by allergies and others. “We do air conditioning, custom cooling, air filtration, air purification, and UV lights” he said. Big Valley’s size allows the business to maintain an extensive store so people can come in and see what’s available. “We have our own showroom where you can see all the products,” he said. Big Valley maintains an on-premises sheet metal shop as well, which allows us to tweak systems if required so each client gets the ideal solution for their home. “We’ll custom-make it to fit your house,” Ron said. “We’re easy and accommodating. No job is too big or too small.” The heating business has changed

significantly over the decades Ron has been running Big Valley. He said one of the most notable differences is just how much furnaces have improved. “We’ve gone from 40 per cent efficiency furnaces all the way to 98 per cent efficient.” Ron said that’s a tremendous reason for those with older furnaces to upgrade, as the new ones’ efficiency can lead to dramatic energy savings. Big Valley can help with that. “We do lots of retrofits, taking out those old, inefficient, gas-guzzling furnaces,” Ron said. “It’s a huge savings, a lot cheaper.” Another key way to save energy is cleaning or replacing dirty filters. “Dirty filters use a lot of energy,” Ron said. Big Valley’s open Monday through Saturday. Their proven track record makes them a reliable pick when looking for heating or cooling solutions, and they are a company that’s in it for the long haul. “We’re going to be here tomorrow, the next day and the day after,” says Ron. RESTAURANT

FIVE

THINGS T H AT M A K E THE KEG

G R E AT 1 Customer service.

Customer satisfaction is the Keg’s highest priority.

2 Food quality. There

are no shortcuts at The Keg. The finest quality food is prepared with classic pride and care.

3 Drinks. Whether it’s

a classic cocktail or something from the extensive wine list, The Keg has the perfect match for every meal.

4 Our people. At The

Keg, you’re always greeted with a smile by staff who really do love their job. It’s an approach that only works when it’s genuine. At The Keg, it is.

5 Decor and atmosphere. The Keg is a place to relax, laugh and enjoy each other’s company. The classic decor reminds customers that this is an authentic steak house - and always will be.

A classic steakhouse, true to it’s name One of the most challenging aspects of dining out these days is rooted in the tendency for restaurants to chase the latest trends, and bend themselves into pretzels trying to be all things to all people. The truth is that, often, the best things are found, not in establishments trying to include every type of food on their menu, but in those eating places where they know what they want to be, and they do it right. “It’s true that I’ve seen restaurants try to serve everything and which chase the latest food fad while abandoning, or never establishing what they’re really good at,” observed Ryan van Baal, general manager and owner of the Keg in Maple Ridge. “We don’t believe in that approach. You’ll never see us try to put sushi on the menu, next to the cuts of steak. I’ve seen restaurants do that, and it makes me wonder why they’re not true to what they know.” Van Baal maintains

“You’ll never see us try to put sushi on the menu, next to the cuts of steak.” that the success of the Keg is that it, quite simply, a classic steakhouse. “We’re

not a vegan restaurant and don’t really offer a lot in that regard, and if you are looking for sushi, we can direct you to some fine establishments. But it’s not who we are.” Certainly, the Keg offers an impressive choice of options. Classic cocktails, delicious appetizers, succulent seafood and an outstanding wine list rounds out the menu of the finest cuts of steak, but it’s all centered around a core principle of staying true to its identity. “We offer a quality meal at a reasonable price … and we’re a steakhouse. It’s that simple.” Of course, nothing is ever quite that simple, and van Baal explained that the Keg takes pride in achieving its core principles, even when those principles would be daunting to other restaurants. “One example is our offering of king crab. As you might guess, the market price of crab can fluctuate wildly and sometimes it can be very expensive for us to buy. But we never raise the price in the restaurant, because we believe that our customers deserve to have a consistent price point for that particular product, even if it’s not particularly profitable for us at certain times of the year.” Van Baal takes pride in that approach and is quick to point out that the

Keg doesn’t believe in short cuts, never sacrificing quality to bring down a menu price point or increase profit. But beyond constantly good food at a reasonable price, running a successful restaurant has as much to do with service as the food and drink on the table. “We choose our staff very carefully to make sure that they really do love what they’re doing,” said van Baal. “Our goal is to make certain that every Keg experience is an exceptional one and that we consistently exceed our customer’s expectations.” To that end, van Baal explained that the staff are not instructed to repeat a set script when they arrive at a customer’s table, but are encouraged to express their own personality in every encounter with diners. “We may have them sort of dress the same, but we recognize that they are all individuals and we respect that. Their interaction with our customers is authentic and tends to reflect their own level of satisfaction with the job. We try to make certain that they’re happy and, by doing that, we know that job satisfaction will result in a positive experience and the happiness of our customers.” There’s a reason the Keg has been around for as long as it has. The winning combination of great food and quality service ensures the dining public that, one restaurant at least, will stick to a set of standards and a belief that being a jack of all trades, and the master of none, is not the way to run a restaurant.

Kathy Blom, Certified Financial Planner.

Financial planner Kathy Blom is a name you can trust In an industry like financial planning, trust is a big intangible. With 36 years in the financial services sector, Certified Financial Planner Kathy Blom’s clients trust her to do what is right for them. “You don’t often have a financial planner who has the banking background, the accounting background and the legal background that I have,” Kathy says. “This is a trust industry and people trust me.” She came up through the financial services sector with 20 years with CIBC and 15 years in the credit union system. She became an investment Funds Advisor in 1998, and progressed to become a Certified Financial Planner in 2008. For the past year or so, she has been out on her own, opening up her Manulife Securities office on Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge.

“This is a trust industry and people trust me.” Kathy Blom It was the right step in her career as now she has more time to focus on her clients and their needs. And the majority of her clients made the move with her — a testament to what she can offer to her clients. “It’s been great being on my own. I feel I’m giving my clients even better service than I used to,” she says. “I have more time to think about their

needs outside of the corporate framework, and that’s a great gift to be able to give them.” Kathy looks at the overall holistic picture for a client, such as will and estates, taxation issues, trust issues, RRSP and retirement planning and insurance protection. “It’s not just about investing — it’s about being tax efficient. Do you have your estate planning in order? Are you spending the right money first? Are you well diversified? A lot of clients don’t know what that means,” she says. “Many clients may pay too much attention to media reports of what’s going on in the markets”. “I don’t invest based on what’s going on with the markets, I invest based on what’s going on in clients’ lives”. “My job is no different than a doctor, accountant, lawyer or notary — you look at things holistically. My job is to give them peace of mind and keep them safe. That’s what I do.” And every client is different, so Kathy makes sure she treats every client as such. “First we need to find out whether you fit, and do you like me? There has to be a right fit,” she adds. “I have a lot of experience, not just in financial planning. I have experience in lending, a legal background, an accounting background, so really nothing can fall through the cracks. “What I do with new clients is we have a conversation about what do they need. Maybe they don’t need me.

Maybe they are self-doers and like to manage their own planning. People don’t come here to tell me what to do, they come here because they want me to guide them. I just go from A to Z. I ask a lot of questions about debt, life stage, and really what’s important to them. Not everyone’s goals and objectives are the same.” After she is confident in her client’s motivators, she gets to work putting together all of the components that will help them to achieve their stated goals. “There’s a lot of financial pressure on Canadians at all stages of their life, but especially as they get older, and they need good, solid advice and information,” she says. “I have a lot of senior clients, but I just also got three new young clients, 24, 25 and 27-years old, which is great because they are all savers and want detailed financial information. They are looking at the future and the big picture. As I said, I get clients from all walks of life. Every person who comes in is not the same, so I guess I don’t put them into a bucket. I look at every single person and then I tailor a plan for their needs.” Kathy grew up in Maple Ridge and it’s her hometown. She loves the community and it’s certainly helped build up her client base. “I want to thank all the clients who came with me and invite others to come in and talk with me. This is my hometown so that’s why I’m here. It’s a wonderful place to live, work and do business,” she says.

Haney Builders Supplies: crafting customized solutions based on experience The fact that Haney Builders Supplies has been in Maple Ridge for almost 80 years is not only a testament to its commitment to the community, but also to its customers. The family owned business opened its doors in 1939 and is the oldest lumberyard and building supply store in Maple Ridge and also the area’s largest. It covers a full city block in the heart of downtown. Haney Builders Supplies deals with materials for everything from the smallest renovations to multi-family projects. There are separate divisions specializing in lumber, finishing, landscaping and paint. “We primarily deal with every aspect of wood construction,” said Haney Builders Supplies general manager Alex Yakovyshenko. “We like helping (people) solve the problems that they have,” said Yakovyshenko. “We take pride in providing solutions and being with our customers from start to finish. And that relationship is what brings us back to work every day,” he continued. What most people don’t realize, though, is that there is a large retail front to the store as well. Here sales staff get to spend a half an hour to an hour with a customer, walking them through their home reno issue and putting together a kit that is unique to their situation. “We use our knowledge and expertise and put pieces together, plumbing, electrical or whatever it may be,” said Yakovyshenko. “We like the fact that the customer will leave and they will probably spend less than $20. They will leave with the knowledge how to fix (the problem) as opposed to being stuck with a problem they are unsure how to tackle,” he added. Yakovyshenko says customers can expect to be treated well, pay a fair price and be looked after the moment they set foot in Haney Builders Supplies. “We do all three exceptionally well,” said the building supply store manager, adding that a lot of the times his staff and customers become friends. They get to know each other on a first name basis. The crew of 60 at Haney Builders Supplies are also trained to deal with bigger projects as well. There is a contract sales office that deals with material take offs

and special orders can be made if something can’t be found in the store. Yakovyshenko is very proud of the business’ history of giving back to the community. “We take pride in being part of the community even though our community is not small anymore. We still very much participate in various activities and aspects of it,” he said. A lot of the initiatives, Yakovyshenko said, comes through his staff members. “If people want to support a particular initiative and they want to be part of it, we help out,” he said. Haney Builders Supplies helps the Friends In Need Food Bank by collecting non-perishable food items at various events they host. They hold an annual golf tournament to raise money for

“We take pride in providing solutions and being with our customers from start to finish. And that relationship is what brings us back to work every day,” Haney Builders Supplies general manager Alex Yakovyshenko different charities. Over the last 30 years it has raised more than $150,000. Last year they raised more than $15,000 for the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. The business also supports carpentry programs at local schools. Plus they sponsor Pink Shirt Day, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, The War Amps Child Amputee Program, Sunshine Foundation of Canada and the B.C. Lower Mainland RCMP Golf Tournament. They are also a big part of the annual Ridge Meadows Home Show that will be taking place May 4 to 6 at the Albion Fairgrounds and will have a booth at the event. They are also a main sponsor of Operation Red Nose in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

“We really wanted to be a part of making sure less people are drinking and driving,” said Yakovyshenko. A unique feature of Haney Builders Supplies is that they host a ladies night every November. “We wanted to welcome a lot more lady shoppers,” said Yakovyshenko. Yakovyshenko says that traditionally the industry has been male dominated but now in a lot of households the woman is the bread winner if not the only person in the household and there are more women working for him than there has been in the past. Between 100 and 150 women turned out for Ladies Night this past November that featured stations with vendors and demonstrations teaching participants how to fix problems around the house that they might not feel comfortable doing. The night also featured new products like tire socks that were a huge success. “They call them socks. It’s like a piece of material that is easily slipped over your tire so you can drive in the winter. It’s kind of a nicer alternative to a snow chain,” he explained. At Haney Builders Supplies, it is all about the customer. Just recently they changed their computer system to be able to serve our customers better and in December they outfitted their yard with lights so that people could feel a bit safer. They are also going to be more active on social medial this year. But one thing Yakovyshenko wants people to know is that his skilled team is enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge to help customers with the smallest of projects to the big builders. ”A lot of our staff members have been working in trades or around trades so when we’re standing on the other side of the counter from our customer, a lot of things we talk about we’ve actually done,” he explained. And that’s what Yakovyshenko believes sets them a part from other home renovation stores. They are able to craft customized solutions for a unique situations talking from experience. They are located at 22740 Dewdney Trunk Rd. in Maple Ridge and are open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as well as on holidays.

SENIORS RESIDENCE

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

when choosing a seniors living community:

1 If your loved one is

independent, find out if the residence has an active outlook, ask what types of activities are offered.

2 If you need assisted living, find out if the residence is registered with the provincial assisted living registry.

3 When you walk in

to a residence, does it ‘feel’ right? Each seniors community has a feeling or ambience. Is it bright, clean, modern, or outdated?

4 Do the staff say

‘hello’ as you are walking through the building? This is a sign of a caring and warm community.

5 Ask if the chef is

willing to give you a tour of the kitchen.

Local owners inspire family atmosphere at The Wesbrooke Pat De Luca is determined to maintain a committed hands-on ownership style at The Wesbrooke Seniors Living Community. To prove that point, he takes a few extra minutes with residents before he sits down for an interview about his successful, family-owned, 114-suite seniors living facility in the heart of downtown Pitt Meadows, 12000 – 190A Street. “We are having an entertainer today and I needed to introduce the Irish fiddler,” he says. “She’s brilliant.” De Luca and his wife Celeste co-own The Wesbrooke and work onsite at least five days a week, an unusual perk in an industry where many seniors’ homes are owned by large corporations. Pat and Celeste opened The Wesbrooke in December 2012 and recently marked the occasion with a five-year anniversary celebration for residents, families, and staff. They created their new seniors living community after gaining valuable experience as partners in the group that developed Maple Ridge’s Willow Manor about 14 years ago. “We really wanted to develop a unique kind of place that we could be a big part of every day,” Pat said. And that’s exactly what they did. “We aren’t tied to a corporate chain that looks at the bottom line first,” he says. “We look at the needs of our residents and how happy they are.” The Wesbrooke includes both independent and assisted living suites catering to the variety of needs of today’s seniors. Independent residents have the choice of studio, one- or two-bedroom units on any of the four floors. Assisted living suites are located on the third floor, although residents throughout the facility have access to extra care. These assisted living units have access to a nurse manager/clinical lead and 24-hour care aides for those who need a little more help. Care aides can assist residents throughout the building, day or night, and there are added security measures in place, such as 24-hour monitoring of entrances

and the parkade, an advanced security system with personal entry card and 24-hour emergency response service, as well as quarterly health assessments. “It’s important that people get the help they need,” he says. “Especially some of the more elderly residents who may need assistance during the night.” The main floor boasts an elegant dining room, where healthy meals are served

“We aren’t tied to a corporate chain that looks at the bottom line first. We look at the needs of our residents and how happy they are.” Pat De Luca twice a day and a continental breakfast buffet is provided every morning, and tea room, where residents can relax and enjoy on their own time, and a welcoming common area complete with a grand piano. There’s also an on-site hair salon, a media room, wellness centre, gym room and a fireside lounge and bar. Families can gather in a separate country-kitchen or private dining room that can be used when residents want a little extra space to host family. Maintaining these close ties is a key goal for Pat and Celeste, who grew up surrounded by family in Vancouver and have lived for decades in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, where they have raised their own children.

Families are invited to brunch at Christmas at The Wesbrooke, as well as family BBQs in the summer, and are kept in touch with newsletters and other ongoing communication efforts. “We’re passionate about family,” Pat says. “I guess it comes from the way we grew up. We know how important parents are and how important grandparents are. We believe in family and respect this whole family philosophy and way of thinking.” The Wesbrooke staff also work hard to create connections new for residents within the Pitt Meadows community. They host events such as an Alzheimer’s association tea, collect food for local food banks, work with local organizations, bring school classes to visit, and host a Parents of Young Children program. “It’s so important to create these community and intergenerational connections,” he says. This community environment didn’t happen by accident. Pat worked closely with the Pitt Meadows municipality and Pitt Meadows Seniors Association representatives in an in-depth community process that resulted in the unique building that houses both The Wesbrooke and the Pitt Meadows Seniors Centre. The Wesbrooke residents receive a complimentary membership in the Pitt Meadows Seniors Association and access to the Pitt Meadows Seniors Centre through an adjoining door in the building. Good thing, because seniors are becoming healthier and living longer, Pat notes. When he first began working with seniors, there were less than a dozen people in their 90s in his facility. Now, at The Wesbrooke there are more than 40 people in their 90s among the more than 130 residents. As well, there are more men, and more couples calling the building home. “It’s a very interesting trend,” says Pat. “For us, it’s really nice to see our residents living well and longer.” • To discover more about The Wesbrooke, call 604-460-7006.

LEGAL SERVICES

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS 1 2 3

4

5

When choosing a lawyer, you’ll have the most success with someone with whom you personally connect. If you decide a lawyer isn’t right for you, keep looking.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions – that’s what we’re here for. Your lawyer should be happy to answer any legal questions you might have.

Remember, your lawyer acts on your instructions. They can explain pros and cons or recommend certain courses of action, but decisions are still yours to make.

Demand transparency with fees. Depending on the area of law (some are more certain than others), your lawyer should be able to give you at least a rough estimate of your legal costs.

Speaking of fees: don’t be put off it a lawyer asks you for a retainer in advance. The money still belongs to you. Your lawyer is just holding it in their trust account as security for payment and will return any unused money.

Becker and Company returns to Maple Ridge roots Terry and John Becker were once a bit worried their loyal clients wouldn’t make the trek from Maple Ridge to Pitt Meadows when they moved their successful practice westward in 1993. Now, Terry chuckles at the thought as Becker and Company adds more staff and a full-time lawyer to their office in Maple Ridge to keep up the demand for their services. “We laugh about it now,” she says. “Today our client base extends internationally. With many more service modes available, we can make sure that the ever-important client relationship is tailored the way each client wants it.” With their adoption of many e-filing and online accessible options for their clients, the need for office visits has diminished. However, sometimes a face-to-face meeting services the client’s needs. These days, it’s sometimes best to visit clients at their place of business and not make them come to the law office, Terry says.

“It made all the sense in the world to reinvest in Maple Ridge,” says Terry. “Maple Ridge is where it all started and we have always been very optimistic about legal service opportunities in Maple Ridge.” The new downtown Maple Ridge location, at 22568 Lougheed Highway, will serve the fast-growing neighbourhoods of east Maple Ridge, Mission and eastern regions of the Fraser Valley. “It made all the sense in the world to reinvest in Maple Ridge,” says Terry. “Maple Ridge is where it all started and we have

always been very optimistic about legal service opportunities in Maple Ridge.” She’s quick to note that the Pitt Meadows office continues to thrive and serve the needs of clients across the region. “We still have plenty to do here,” she says. Terry and John Becker established their successful law firm in Maple Ridge just over 37 years ago, when they decided to make this region their home and location for the new law firm. That’s a long time to create ties in a community – and that’s just what the Beckers have done. Their busy law firm, and John’s political life as mayor of Pitt Meadows, have meant they have plenty of connections to Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Their commitment to community involvement means those connections have developed into deep roots. For 37 years, Becker and Company has supported many local organizations, from the Friends in Need Foodbank to the Ridge Meadows Lawnbowling Club. These strong ties were another reason to continue to reinvest in the Maple Ridge office. “This is home,” Terry says. “And now we are excited to have a new team in our Maple Ridge office.” But perhaps not as excited as fellow Becker and Company lawyer Jamie Nay, who will oversee the Maple Ridge office. “Jamie’s our guy in Maple Ridge.” says Terry. “It’s his to run.” And he’s already started putting his stamp on the practice. He and his Maple Ridge team have spruced up the downtown office with new floors and paint and Nay has even managed to decorate some of the space to reflect one of his major passions. “As anyone who visits the office will notice, I have a borderline unhealthy

obsession with Star Wars,” he jokes. Nay will work with an experienced staff of three, including experienced Becker and Company employees Michelle Schofield, Vanessa St. Croix, and Samantha Chappell. The various offices are fully networked together and can provide clients in diverse locations with specialized service from any of the Becker and Company lawyers and staff. Nay is eager to begin serving clients from the new downtown Maple Ridge office. Nay, who was born and raised in Maple Ridge, now lives across the Golden Ears bridge with his partner Kristen and their blended family of four kids and two dogs. “I’m very excited,” he says. “I have the opportunity to return to my home town. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with, and giving back to the community through our business.” He wants to run the office with a clientfirst emphasis. “This is giving me the opportunity to manage a law office the way that I think law offices today should be run: transparent, approachable, efficient, and friendly. We’re not an old- fashioned law office.” He also hopes he can bring some of his own personality to the job. Besides being a huge Star Wars fan, he tries to fit in his favourite hobbies of cycling, playing guitar and woodworking into his busy schedule. Even though there’s not a lot of free time these days as he spends much getting the Lougheed Highway office up and running, he’s hoping to see some of his old friends and make new ones as he settles in to the job. “Come in and say ‘hi,’” Nay says. “I always enjoy chatting with prospective clients. We aren’t an old-fashioned law firm. I always have time for a quick introduction and a rundown of what we do and how we do it.”

Warm Hearth offers a great selection of wood and gas fireplaces to warm your home.

Stoves From Warm Hearth Create A Cozy, Warm Atmosphere In Any Home Now is the perfect time to buy a new wood, pellet or gas-burning stove to warm your home. Lisa Blaine from Maple Ridge’s Warm Hearth Heating Centre, says rebates currently offered by Metro Vancouver are a good incentive for homeowners. Residents are eligible to receive a $250 rebate for trading in their old, uncertified wood-burning appliance for a new low-emission appliance. Warm Hearth Heating Centre – located at 11834 226th St. – sells a variety of EPA-certified stoves that will make a stylish addition to any home. “The government wants to encourage people to use stoves that burn cleaner and don’t give off as much smoke,” says Lisa. “Now is the time to buy to take advantage of these savings.” Another reason to buy is the continuing increase in cost of materials, which will likely make stoves more expensive in the future. The rising cost of materials results in units being more expensive to produce, even if they’re made in B.C. “If you’re thinking of buying, you should do so sooner rather than later,” says Lisa. “We’re already seeing prices go up, so it’s a good time to stop by Warm Hearth and see what we have in store.” Warm Hearth Heating Centre’s wide

selection of wood, pellet and gas-burning stoves provides benefits beyond just keeping warm. Lisa explains that the kind of heat provided by burning wood is ideal for the Lower Mainland’s humid climate since the dryness of the wood goes a long way towards keeping houses mold-free. She says enjoying a wood-burning stove regularly is a lifestyle, because you have to split the wood, stack it and clean up after. The effort is worth it, however, because wood is the cheapest heating method and also creates a cozy atmosphere. For people who lead busy lifestyles and don’t have time to burn wood, Lisa recommends a gas stove. “It’s as convenient as clap-on, clapoff,” she says. With cold weather on the way, Lisa says customers are buying stoves as part of their emergency plan. “They are asking, ‘how do we survive eight days without power?’” She recommends buying high-quality units – an easy task to fulfill at Warm Hearth since many of its products are made in B.C., which is considered the best in manufacturing. Visitors to the United States can notice local brands like Regency and Pacific

Air-tight fireplaces provide efficient heat.

Energy on full display, because their reputations cross the border as well. “These companies’ proven track records speak for themselves.” One important tip Lisa emphasizes is to not use chimney-sweeping logs in wood-burning stoves because they can overheat the metal which causes warping of the firebox and make it more flammable, potentially causing a chimney fire. The air-tight environment makes the situation dangerous, and the stove will need to be professionally cleaned after. As long as proper precautions are taken, Lisa says that a wood or gas-burning stove can be an excellent addition to any home. “They can really turn a house into a home.”

THE

Roots Crew!

Healthy, natural products are the cornerstone of Roots Jeff Miller has run Roots Natural Organic Foods for over two decades now, but the store has changed significantly in that time. “I bought it 25 years ago,” Jeff says. “It was a quarter of the size it is now.” There have been significant product changes in that time, too, as the store has evolved from a specialty shop into a full-service organic grocery. “It was your typical hippie granola thing,” Jeff says. “Now we’re full-service.” Jeff says the store’s mission hasn’t changed, however. “We’re trying to help people be healthy,” he says. “We try to sell good natural products.” Jeff says eating properly and living healthily is a lifestyle, and he’s tried to make his store a communityfocused place that can help people do that. “That’s the way I live,” he says. “I made it a store I would want to shop in.” Jeff says it can be difficult for people to make sure they’re buying natural products at a regular grocery store, which is where Roots Natural comes in. “We do the shopping for you,” he says. “You don’t have to read the labels, because we do. We stand behind all our products.” Jeff co-owns the store with his wife, Tammy. She says they’re committed

to ensuring only the best products are sold in their store. “We don’t sell it unless we’ve tried it,” she says. A growing part of their business has been natural dietary supplements, which Jeff says are crucial to overall health in this era of heavily processed foods.

“We don’t sell it unless we’ve tried it” Jeff Miller, Roots Natural Owner “No matter how well you think you are eating, you can’t get everything from your foods,” he says. “You have to fill that gap, and that’s what the supplements do.” The store was founded in 1971, and Jeff says it’s the oldest remaining natural foods store in the Lower Mainland. He says Maple Ridge has been the perfect location for the store. “The customer base is awesome,” he says. “The loyal day-to-day customer

has built our business. If you want to build a good natural food customer base, this is the place to build it.” Jeff says many of his customers and their families have been coming to the store for decades. “It’s a whole community,” he says. “We’ve hired lots of our customers’ kids.” The store also hosts speakers on healthy living. Jeff says the speakers are an important part of their goal to improve people’s health. “We just try to educate people,” he says. Jeff says the education has caught on, as there’s an ever-growing interest in natural foods. “Health foods aren’t just for hippies any more, they’re for everyone,” he says. “It’s a part of everyday life; it’s a lifestyle.”

NOTARY PUBLIC

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

to help complete the emotional task of writing a will

1 2 3

4

5

Keep it simple. Select a local notary or lawyer you are comfortable with, and trust.

My office provides you with a simple checklist to get you started. Don’t think of it as home work. Fill out what you can, and we will help you with the rest.

Make the best decisions for today. We want to include alternate decisions such as who will be executor, beneficiaries or guardians but it’s too overwhelming to ‘what if’ every scenario or you will never get a will started.

Review your will every few years, or during a major life event, to make sure it is still current and matches your wishes. I am happy to review your will to make sure it complies with current legislation and is a valid Will.

Communicate with your loved ones. Discuss your wishes and write down any specific instructions about everything from small items you want to gift to funeral arrangements.

Former police officer Nicole MacDonald tackles a new way to help people Nicole MacDonald has built her successful Pitt Meadows notary business on the idea of helping people through the stresses of life’s major transitions. Maybe that’s because transitions are something she knows more than a bit about. In 2012, she left an eight-year career in the Vancouver Police Department after a life-altering eye injury to her husband, fellow VPD member Garett MacDonald, and the birth of her two daughters. “We had to reassess,” she notes. She went back to school to get her masters degree from Simon Fraser University’s Applied Legal Studies program to become a notary when her daughters were just one and two years old. “I don’t know what I was thinking,” she jokes. But MacDonald knew exactly what she was doing and she’s never regretted the decision. After finishing at SFU, she and Garett opened Nicole MacDonald Notary in 2013. She began with just herself and one other employee. Now, after almost five years of operation, her family-run business has five full-time staff and three contract employees. “I’m so proud of our team,” she says. “We have an awesome staff.” Her office, atop the Pitt Meadows library building at No. 304 – 12099 Harris Road, is in the heart of the community she and her husband moved to over a decade ago. And the location is no accident. She wanted a place where she and her employees could walk to work and to easily drop their kids off at the nearby schools. “There may have been bigger and fancier locations elsewhere, but it was important to us to be able to work here, serve here and raise my family

here, she says. “I am so grateful for the community support. Pitt Meadows is gem of a place.” She also wanted her business located within walking distance of downtown to be accessible to seniors and those with limited mobility – a particular passion of hers. The needs of this vulnerable population are what drove MacDonald to become a notary in the first place. Both her grandmothers had dementia, so having power of attorney helped relieve stress for her family at an emotional time. As well, she had a cousin who was struck by cancer early in her adulthood and remembers the relief when a notary made the trip to help with the stressful paperwork. “I know the importance of this work firsthand.” she says. “I believe in it.” Nicole MacDonald Notary is a fulling functioning notary public office. It does real estate transactions, representative agreements, notarizations, powers of attorney and wills. Still, Nicole remains passionate about working with those who have limited mobility and travels to hospitals, homes and hospice locations to assist families during what is often one of the toughest moments of their lives. “That’s where my heart lies,” she says. It’s ironic, people think this work is so different from policing, but I find that both are dealing with people in high stress situations.” As the only notary public in Pitt Meadows, she is often the first point of contact for people trying to maneuver through the legal system because clients tend to feel more comfortable with a notary, she says.

But MacDonald also has a strong relationship with nearby lawyers and accountants and doesn’t hesitate to refer her clients to other legal practitioners when needed. She also has some ongoing support of her own. Her husband, and business partner, Garett still works for the Vancouver Police Department, with which he’s now an 18-year veteran who works in a unique two-person unit called Road to Mental Readiness, which helps police throughout B.C. with mental health and wellness issues. He’s busy and will be recognized for his efforts with a special commendation for his work this year. But he still finds time to assist with office management and operations. “I am really lucky,” Nicole says. “I can concentrate on being the notary and he helps with the staffing. It’s so important to put proper processes in place so I can still be a mom and help out with my family and do all the things that you have to do not to burn out.” Not that the MacDonalds slow down when they are outside of the office. Nicole is on the board of the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society and helps coach softball. Garett, who was once drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers and coached college hockey, now coaches his young daughter’s hockey team. They support the community in other ways, through the Pitt Meadows Community Foundation and fire department and the Ridge Meadows Hospice Vistas run. Nicole was a bit surprised that her daughters, now 8 and 7, are gearing up to join their busy parents in the five-kilometre category of the Vista run this year. But maybe she shouldn’t be. “We believe in the local events and charities and giving,” she says.

RESTAURANT

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS by Tom Tourand

1 We’re a community-

focused establishment that’s here to serve you;

2 We only buy our

ingredients from local vendors;

3 We only use fresh ingredients;

4 Our signature brick

oven adds extra flavour to our pizzas and other dishes;

5 The classic gummy

frogs everyone loves are a tradition we plan to keep.

Frogstone Grill Celebrates 1st Year under new ownership An amazing and challenging year has welcomed the new owners at The Frogstone Grill and they are delighted at the response from the community in supporting the restaurant. “It is so heartwarming to chat with customers and have them give you that possitve feedback that you try so hard for.” Says owner Tom Tourand. “We continue to strive in providing the best dining experience and really care about how our guests enjoy their visit with us.” As someone new to the restaurant business it has been a very steep learning curve and Tom has had to roll up his sleeves and be involved in the repair and upkeep of the restaurant. “We have made many repairs and equipment replacements to improve the quality of our production.” Tom adds, “I am very thankfull to Barton McLaren who operates the Home Restaurant, as he has been an amazing resourse for many questions that I had. He is someone who

has dialed in his business and I have a lot more to learn from him.” There have been quite a few changes including the addition of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options for many of dishes. This was a very time consuming process but the result has been well worth the effort. Long time customers have noticed changes to the menu and the reality is that the old menu was far to big. We have condensed the menu to help maintain quality and to make training of new employees less challenging while keeping our best selling menu items. We continue to source fresh and locally provided seasonal products and this is reflected in our seasonal menu that changes quarterly. Another exciting change is the addition

of TV’s to The Frogstone Grill. “We understand that some guests aren’t interested in the TV’s but it makes a big difference when a big televised event happens. Our business nearly doubled on Super Bowl Sunday this year.” There is other technology being added as well. The Frogstone Grill is proud to announce the additon of a rewards program. It’s as simple as keying in your phone number into a tablet when you arrive at the restaurant and it tracks your visits to provide free rewards. It’s very quick and easy. Frogstone just joined SKIP THE DISHES so customers can get their food ordered from the Frogstone Grill delivered to them. This is an exciting new arena for us as some people are tired of ordering pizza or chinese food and would love to have their unique dishes sent to them when they just want to spend a night in. There are a few other projects in the works so watch for more exciting changes at The Frogstone Grill.

The Flower Garden has been in business for 18 years at the same location, and continues to flourish. Their goal is to provide the perfect flower, regardless of the occasion. “Our wish is to capture every precious moment for our customers,” says Sandra. “Flowers are meant to bring sunshine and peace to people’s lives, and a good floral creation will always act as a reminder that someone is thinking about them.” The Flower Garden’s motto of ‘Flowers are a gift to the world,’ is truly a reflection of their philosophy. “There are no words to express the privilege of being a part of a special moment in someone’s life,” she adds. Sandra always had a dream and a vision of owning a flower shop and giving back to the community. She will say people and flowers are the greatest inspirations in the world. She feels very blessed to continue to turn the key each morning with the same joy and passion she felt the day the store opened. Westgate Flower Garden’s impact on the community extends beyond just

a humble flower shop, and Sandra and her team are always looking for ways to give back. “We especially love working with youth and children in the community, and want to provide a positive environment for them. “Building a team has been, and continues to be, a unique opportunity to bring the next generation into the industry, and to experience the true meaning of working together.” The Flower Garden has six team members. Relationships Matter – Wearing dentures for more than five years without having them checked could be harmful to your health.

A Welcoming Environment – It’s important that each patient who walks through the door feels comfortable and at ease. We never rush or pressure our patients to make decisions that they aren’t 100 per cent comfortable with.

Team work – We work with other health care professionals to make sure you have the best end result.

Treatment Planning – The day you are fitted with your new denture(s) isn’t the last you’ll see of us.

Credentials – Always check credentials when working with a denturist. At Precision Denture Clinic, Jiwan Bhogal has been licensed for over a decade. Joe Quarto has been licensed for 30 years. Both denturists are registered with the College of Denturists, as well the Denturist Association of BC.

SHOOTING SUPPLY

Wanstalls friendly staff can help you find exactly what you are looking for.

FIVE

Personalized service and specialized approach means safe shooting

TIPS

Wanstalls is a Maple Ridge institution. In continuous operation since 1952, it serves shooting and gun enthusiasts from beginners to experienced shooters.

CO N S U M E R by Craig Jones

1 Talk to the experts.

We take a specialized approach to making sure you get what you need.

2 Have a clear

understanding of what you want to accomplish. For example: target shooting or outdoor hunting?

3 A genuine expert will ask you questions, not offer you absolutes. They will respect your budget.

4 A good, well-looked

after gun will last you a lifetime. Buy the best you can afford.

5 The right equipment

is crucial. Don’t forget to get a scope for your gun. It is a critical accessory.

The store started as E & D Sports and in 1973. Tony Wanstall purchased it, changing the name. Current owner Craig Jones bought the store, located on Lougheed Highway in downtown Maple Ridge, in 2007. Dedicated to the discipline, Jones became interested in firearms as a youngster. His early interest developed as a weekend target shooting hobby. That, combined with a love of the outdoors and a desire for more challenging targets, led him to hunting. “I love getting out into nature and having dirt under my feet. Hunting combines my love of nature with a love of shooting. Having something to eat at the end of it is a bonus,” said Jones. Based on his passion for guns and the outdoors, buying the store and becoming a professional firearms expert was a natural evolution. Jones and his team at Wanstalls take particular pride in the depth of experience and knowledge they offer. Whether a customer is completely new to the world of shooting or has had a lifetime enjoying the discipline, Wanstalls staff are skilled in ascertaining the customer’s needs and recommending the right equipment or next steps. Members of the team at Wanstalls are all experts in the field. All are gun enthusiasts who are engaged in the discipline and love of the sport. “There is a big difference,” said Jones, “between actually being involved in the sport, doing it, and simply selling what happens to be in stock.” This is especially important for customers who have a lot of experience themselves. “We are a real resource for the longtime gun owners because we share their interest and enthusiasm,” he said. As a small retail operation, Wanstalls offers personalized service and a specialized approach, which is equally beneficial for those new to the sport. Jones and his team provide all the assistance needed for anyone interested in getting started in the discipline.

“For newcomers, the very first step is to successfully complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course,” Jones said. Once the course is completed, the potential gun owner must apply for a license. Gun licensing is federally regulated, via the Firearms Act. It sets out the rules for possessing a firearm and all the relevant requirements for firearms possession, storage, and transportation in Canada. The course is available through the store at West Coast Instruction. Jones emphasizes that gun licensing is a serious matter. It takes approximately three months and consumers cannot obtain a gun without the appropriate licensing. “The licensing process is no joke,” he said. “They dive into every area of your life and ask detailed questions. They run significant background checks on the potential gun owner.” Additionally, hunters must pass the provincial Conservation Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) program to obtain a hunting license. The successful completion of the program is required for B.C. residents who are 10 or older in order to obtain a CORE Graduate Certificate and a Fish and Wildlife ID Number. Once the customer has successfully completed training and obtained the necessary licensing, Wanstalls staff ensure the customer is outfitted with the right equipment. The staff will ask very specific questions related to what it is the customer is hoping to achieve, the purpose for using the gun, and whether that person is sport shooting, target shooting or hunting. Calibres of guns range from pellet rifles to a 50 BMG – a huge long-range cartridge – and everything in between. “There are literally thousands of kinds of firearms available,” said Jones. “We work with you to make sure you get what suits your needs and is within your budget.” Pricing on firearms and supplies ranges from a low of around $500 upwards to

$50,000 and more. The typical spend is around $1.200. “Some hobbies come and go, but shooting is one that tends to stick,” Jones said. “A good gun should last a lifetime and beyond.” Wanstalls can provide everything needed to care for and maintain the investment over the long-term, from parts and accessories to protective equipment. The service doesn’t just stop at the retail store. Wanstalls online (wanstallsonline. com) offers a full range of firearms, optics, ammunition and accessories, as well as parts and supplies. Customers must register and set up an account to shop online, and all licensing requirements must be met. Visitors to the website can sign up for a monthly newsletter or connect with Wanstalls on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest. With more than 5,000 likes on Facebook, Wanstalls hosts a thriving online community of gun enthusiasts sharing shooting tips, the latest in goods and gadgets, and personal recommendations. A growing trend in the industry is an interest in long-range target shooting. Long-range target shooting involves calculating factors such as ballistics and wind. It is challenging, requiring a great deal of precision and focus. Jones said trends are cyclical, but there are definitely more women entering the sport. Jones credits the growing interest to the skill development required to become good at it. These skills primarily include discipline and control. Increased strength, stamina, hand-eye coordination, and fine motor skills are just a few of the physical proficiencies acquired in the shooting sports. Shooting also increases mental discipline as concentration levels are sharpened and expanded. Focusing the mind in this way can reduce stress. Gun enthusiasts come from all walks of life. Some enjoy the discipline, focus and sense of control offered by the sport. Others enjoy getting into the great outdoors, sourcing healthy local, antibiotic and steroid-free meat to stock their freezers. It is a discipline that attracts all ages and the love of the sport is passed on between generations.

AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

when getting that auto body work

1 2 3 4 5

Look for a quality shop with a history of service and a reputation for quality.

Insist on highly qualified staff and never trust your repair to a shop that is not clean and organized at first glance.

Don’t accept anything less than the perfect repair. Shortcuts are great for cutting down on traveling time; not so great when your vehicle is being repaired.

Ask about the certification of the staff working on your vehicle and make certain they are fully trained for the work they’re doing.

Don’t despair if you’re involved in a collision. Choose the right auto body repair shop and your baby can be put back, good as new.

Kirmac a growing concern with small business principles There are few things that will ruin one’s day faster than having the vehicle you love involved in an accident. It’s strange, but there’s just something about seeing your pride and joy broken, bent and otherwise destroyed that can make almost every vehicle owner feel a sense of loss that we don’t feel when other material goods are damaged. Perhaps it’s because we choose our cars, vans or trucks to reflect who we are, and when those vehicles are damaged, it’s as though we’ve lost a little bit of our identity. Sean McIntosh, director of operations at Kirmac Auto Body Repair in Maple Ridge, knows exactly how his customers feel and it’s one of the reasons he and his crew of professionals take their jobs very seriously.

“We know how it feels to see your vehicle damaged, and it’s our job to make it right.” “Looking after our customers and making them a priority is the most important thing in any business, and it’s particularly important for us. We know how it feels to see your vehicle damaged, and it’s our job to make it right.” That’s been the approach of Kirmac for more than 45 years. The company was founded by McIntosh’s father and uncle and since that time, through a combination of

professional service and a customer-based approach to their operations, the company has grown to where today it has 18 locations, stretching from the North Vancouver to Langley and Maple Ridge. “It’s a family business and that’s what sets us apart in many ways. Kirmac was founded on the small business principles that say that the customer has to be the most important person in the shop. If we don’t take care of every customer as though they are our friends or family, then we’re doing it wrong.” But McIntosh is quick to point out that, even though the company has expanded, it’s focus has never been on how big it can get. “The important thing for us is that we expanded without ever losing the basic commitment to quality and professionalism. We are the only business of our kind that has it’s own dedicated, 12,000-square-foot learning facility to make certain that our staff are trained in the latest techniques, tools and materials. It’s a fully functional shop where we embrace a philosophy of continual learning.” The commitment to training is mirrored by the commitment to adopting the latest technology. Kirmac is equipped with resistance spot welders (as opposed to traditional MiG welding) that mimic the exact welding technology that is in place in car factories around the world. The $30,000 machine can mimic those welds exactly, making for a more professional repair.

The commitment to training is also evidenced by the fact that Kirmac employs 70 apprentices, spread across all of its locations. The system ensures that new staff are groomed to have the requisite skills, as well as in the customer-first approach for the work they do. “How you look after someone when things go wrong shows customers what sort of company you are,” explained McIntosh. “If something has not been done to the complete satisfaction of the customer, we take the time to listen to the concern and we make it right. That’s something we impress upon all our staff, and it’s something they take very seriously.” Of course, added McIntosh, with the level of skill and experience at Kirmac, there are very few mistakes. In another demonstration of the company’s small-business approach to operations, Kirmac has continued its traditional support for the community it serves. A percentage of every dollar earned doing repairs is dedicated to B.C. Children’s Hospital, and in the past seven years the company has donated more than $2 million to that cause. “It’s an approach that my father and uncle established and we’re staying true to their principles.” The two founders of the company, while no longer actively involved in the day-to-day operations, still keep their hands in to provide guidance and set direction for the management of staff in place today. “They have a lot of knowledge to share and a ton of experience. It’s perhaps our strongest resource going forward into the future.”

There are old spills inside the fridge that won’t wipe off easily. Any ideas? MM: Use a cloth and a paste made from baking soda mixed with warm water (three parts baking soda to one part water); rinse with water.

If degreaser doesn’t work, how should I remove greasy marks and soap build-up in the sink? MM: For greasy marks and soap build-up, sprinkle baking soda on the sides and bottom of the sink, then pour a little vinegar on top while the mixture is fizzing, rub gently with a clean non-scratch scouring pad and rinse clean with cold water.

The microwave still smells like the popcorn my kids made in it a week ago. How can I remove the smell?MM: Easy! Fill a microwaveable container with two cups of water and add a little lemon juice. Put the microwave on high for three to five minutes.

Do the washer and dryer need a clean too? MM: Absolutely! Set your washer to the longest wash cycle and make sure the water temperature is set to hot. Add two to three cups of white vinegar and about 1/3 cup of baking soda to the inside of your machine and start the cycle. Once it’s done, wipe the inside of the drum with a damp microfibre cloth, and wipe out any product dispensers. Clean the lint trap (every time you use the dryer) as well as inside the dryer duct. You may have to disconnect the dryer vent to clean it out. Check the owner’s manual to see how to do it safely. If the vent walls are coated with lint, you may have to replace the vent with a new one.

My dishwasher smells inside, how can I get rid of the smell? MM: Use vinegar instead of the rinse aid product. Just pour vinegar into the rinse aid compartment; do this as often as needed.

Molly Maid: A Cleaning Name You Can Trust When is comes to cleaning services, Molly Maid is the number one choice among customers in Canada. A Canadian company founded in 1979, Molly Maid completes more than two million residential cleans every year worldwide. In the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area, franchisee Michele Yonge and her team, including her daughter Kylie, have been serving customers since 2012. But Yonge has more than 12 years in the Molly Maid business, as she has been the franchisee for Burnaby/New West/ East Vancouver since 2004. “One of my good girlfriends owns the Calgary franchise. My kids were getting older and it kind of all fell into place to buy the Burnaby franchise,” she says. “A very good friend of mine owned the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows franchise and it just wasn’t working out for her, so it kind of fit in and worked for us.” “Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows is quite different from the Burnaby/New West area. It’s more of a community feel and that was a change for me, to figure out the different dynamics, but we love having the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows franchise.” Recently daughter Kylie has also become an owner of the business, joining her mom as the local franchisee, after having managed the office for several years. The business has three cars and three teams of two women to serve their clients in Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. They recognize that there are many cleaning services in the marketplace, but Molly Maid is a trusted and recognizable brand that just can’t be compared to other cleaning companies. “Molly Maid is a Canadian company, so I think it is nice to support things that

have been started in our own country. It’s been around for 35 years, so it has a long history of being a dependable, reliable, cleaning company,” says Yonge. “We use the same system across Canada, so our system and products are well-tested, our support office is fabulous for every aspect of our business. We have so much access to information, I just feel that is invaluable to me, my staff and our customers.” Molly Maid and their staff are WCB-certified, and have undergone strict records checks, so you can trust their staff when they come knocking on your door. “We are able to be dependable in the sense so that if your cleaning lady is sick someone else will show up,” she says. “In all the years that I have done Molly Maid I have never just not shown up. It’s just a reliable, consistent way to have your house cleaned.” And Molly Maid is a brand that you can trust. “It’s nice that the staff show up in their blue cars with uniforms for seniors, so they don’t feel intimidated when they

me and not directly with the girls. I can then deal with that. I think the pressure of having someone in their house washing their kitchen floor and then telling them they don’t like the way it is being cleaned is very difficult, whereas they can call me and tell me that they are having a little issue and can you deal with it for me, is just reassuring. I can take on all those outside pressures that can make it more difficult.” Molly Maid offers a flexible and customized maid service at an affordable price, based on a free, no-obligation, in-home estimate. Professionally-trained, bonded and insured staff works in teams of two to efficiently clean your home. Their professional cleaning service includes: detailed cleaning of bathrooms and kitchens, washing of floors and cupboard exteriors, dusting of baseboards, pictures, lamp shades, window sills, furniture and light fixtures, complete vacuuming of every room and spot-cleaning of walls. Yonge said their experience in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area has been fantastic, and they look forward to many more years serving their loyal customers. “There hadn’t been a ton of advertising or consistent advertising in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows area before I took over. Anytime someone new comes in it takes a while to establish that relationship and that trust,” she says. “It takes about a year before people can see that little bit of a change, and it’s a growing franchise for us... the community has been very supportive.” To find out more about Molly Maid and its services check out: www.mollymaid. ca.

REAL ESTATE PROFESSIONALS

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

by Clark Coyston, Manager

1 Buying? Shop around for the best rates. Have good credit? Banks will want you. Start negotiating!

2 Sell before you buy. You’ll know exactly how much you can afford to offer.

3 Selling? Grab a can of WD-40 to save those squeaky doors. Buyers pay more for wellmaintained homes.

4 Look at your home

with a critical eye. Take care of the small details.

5 Ask a friend to give

your house a smell test. Neutralize any odours in the home.

RE/MAX: the experts you trust It’s all about trust. If there’s one thing RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty manager Clark Coyston emphasizes, it’s sitting down with clients to understand their needs. Coyston, and the over 60 RE/MAX realtors in Ridge–Meadows, believe in oldfashioned, classic, face-to-face meetings for creating a relationship with their clients. The real estate market has transformed in the two decades since the local brokerage first opened. Prices have spiked. New apartments have sprung up. The amount of people who want to live here grows by the day. But one thing stays constant: the need for homebuyers and sellers to have representation they trust. “Get someone who will advocate for you and ask difficult questions on your behalf,” said Coyston. He recommends everyone thinking of buying or selling to engage a realtor.

“It’s all about trust.” Clark Coyston “When you create a relationship with a realtor who’s associated with an agency, they’re required to look out for your best interest at all times.” One reason people choose RE/MAX, said Coyston, is because the brand is well-established and trusted. The brand is the most recognized real estate franchise in the world and has 115,000 agents across the globe. The RE/MAX LifeStyles Realty brokerage has helped thousands of clients gain the keys to their dream homes. For people looking to buy a home in our community, Coyston has a couple of pointers.

Also, create a sense of spaciousness. Ample storage space is an attractive feature to potential buyers. Take a weekend (or several) to go through your belongings. This might be the time to drop off those old hoodies from five years ago at the thrift store, or at least at a friend’s place while you stage your home. Go through the items stored in your garage as well. To find a realtor, start by looking Firstly, be sure to factor in the cost around in community circles you’re of commuting. WINDOW COVERINGS

FIVE

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

1 Always seek the help of

a professional. These are materials you’ll have for a long time and mistakes can be a problem for years.

2 Take the time to learn what is available on the market. What you think you want may not be the best choice for your needs once you know all the options.

3 Consider the practical

needs you have for your window coverings. Is privacy the greatest concern or is it important to retain the view while blocking harmful UV rays?

4 Do the window coverings

you choose reflect your decor in type, colour, and material? Window covering are as much a part of the look of a room as the paint, artwork, decorations, and furnishings.

5

Consider automation. It’s an added feature that can make the difference between liking and loving your new window coverings.

Style and function.

Knowledge and Service set Budget Blinds Apart It’s a concept that goes back to a level of service that has, to a large extent, been lost in today’s society. Instead of traveling out to a large retail outlet, only to be confronted with limited selection and, at times, a sales staff that is woefully uninformed about the product they have for sale, Budget Blinds in Port Coquitlam has embraced the idea that meeting your needs requires personal attention. Serving the communities of the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, the Budget Blinds team of sales representatives bring the showroom directly to the customer’s home, where they work with that client to ensure that the window coverings they choose are the right pick for their individual needs. “Window coverings are interesting in that they have a definite design aspect, working to help create a specific feel for your home, office or place of business. But they also have a functional role, providing privacy, security, access to or control of the sunlight that floods through windows, and an ease of operation relative to abilities and situation of the home owner,” explained Trish Kuffner, the owner and operator of Budget Blinds. “It requires years of experience and an understanding of what’s available in the marketplace in order to best meet the needs of our customers. That’s what we provide, and I can tell you that our clients see the difference and appreciate our service.” Take, for example, something as simple as choosing a colour. One might think that someone looking for window coverings would choose a colour to match or complement their decor, choose a product and ask for that colour. It’s an approach that can be the recipe

for a great deal of frustration and disappointment. “A lot of people don’t realize that window coverings can pick up the colour of the light that is entering through the windows. Something as simple as a certain type of tree outside a window can cause a reflection that alters the colour of the window covering, making it unsuitable for the space,” said Kuffner, adding that her staff are familiar with these sorts of strategies and go to great lengths to ensure that colour selection is perfect. Another aspect of the business is the selection of what kind of window covering is right for the needs of the client. Today’s choices include a dizzying array of products that range from shutters to blinds, draperies and shades to roller shades made up of solar materials that allow clients to retain a scenic view while blocking sunlight’s harmful rays. Even window films are increasingly requested, a departure from the traditional idea of window coverings. “One of the very popular products these days are automated window coverings. A few years ago customers rarely even considered having this feature in their window coverings, but in our ever-more automated world, people want to be able to adjust their window coverings remotely using their smart phones,” said Kuffner. “It can be a security consideration. A client can be on vacation in another part of the world and adjust their drapes or blinds remotely, giving the impression that someone is in the home.” Kuffner added that the automated feature is also a plus for an aging population

who may not feel comfortable with struggling with cords and other appliances to open and close their window coverings. Even families with young children find the feature handy, eliminating the concern of toddlers grabbing onto dangling cords on the blinds. And automation eliminates dangerous cord loops that can pose a safety hazard for both kids and pets. And as much as the automated aspect

“One of the very popular products these days are automated window coverings.” of window coverings is exploding as the price of that feature drops, there has been a simultaneous return to some more traditional window covering choices. “A lot of people are returning to the idea of drapes as the choices of fabrics and colours has never been greater.” The key for Budget Blinds, maintains Kuffner, is respect. The company has earned a reputation for treating customers with professionalism and care and they take a great deal of pride in that reputation. “People have come to trust us, and we make sure that trust is always well founded. There are a lot of times when a customer doesn’t even have an idea of what they want when they call us in and we take the time to show them what’s available and match their budget with the best possible choices for their needs. It’s a matter of respect.”

Picturesque Swan-e-Set the perfect location for weddings and golf When it comes to having a fairy-tale wedding, it doesn’t get much more romantic than tying the knot at a chateau. For those who can’t travel to Europe for such a venue, Swan-e-Set Bay Resort and Country Club offers the perfect setting for couples looking to create wedding perfection locally on their special day. Upwards of 120 couples each year turn to Swaneset to make the magic happen for their wedding. The chateau-like building – with its grand staircase, intimate fireplaces, spacious ballroom, gorgeous grounds and sweepings vistas – is the ultimate destination-wedding location, right here at home. “Our guests tell us that Swaneset feels like a destination resort without the need to travel,” says company catering sales manager Holly Robinson. “It really is the perfect venue for anyone who wants to make their wedding truly special.” Weddings are very important to the Swaneset family, and they go all out to ensure each occasion, big or small, becomes the memorable event that their clients expect. The key to their success in becoming so popular with brides and grooms is the dedicated service offered by the team of wedding coordinators and every other member of the staff. “We understand that most couples have little event planning experience, so any assistance we can give them is quite appreciated,” says Robinson. “We get to know our clients very well during the planning process, and that really helps us help them to personalize their wedding because we know what questions to ask.” While the venue feels like a chateau, that doesn’t mean the weddings held there have to match that scale. Swaneset hosts every size of wedding, from small, intimate affairs of 50 to grand events featuring 350 guests for sit-down dinners. Swaneset can even accommodate 550 or so for cocktail-type gatherings. And the beauty of it is you can hold both the ceremony and the reception in one truly special location. “It’s actually pretty rare in the Greater Vancouver area that one location can accommodate all aspects of a wedding event,” says

Robinson. Swaneset provides pretty much everything a couple could wish for, including locations for the wedding ceremony itself, the photo shoots, the reception, the dance floor, several bars, a kitchen that specializes in fresh, seasonal, made-from-scratch, culturally sensitive cuisine, and beautiful backdrops for all of this to happen. Swaneset provides the venue, the set-up, and all the service staff necessary. It then works with couples to personalize their wedding, so their flowers, their music, their cultural touches, and everything else they wish to incorporate in their special event, all blend seamlessly to ultimately create one memorable day. Such service comes at a price, but Robinson notes that a Swaneset wedding may be more affordable than many people think. “We’re actually pretty reasonably priced compared to a Vancouver wedding, for instance,” says Swaneset’s catering manager. “We’re priced for the Fraser Valley, but you actually get the same service or better than you would expect at one of the finer Vancouver wedding locations.” And because Swaneset is a year-round venue for weddings, couples on a budget can take advantage of off-season rates January through March, and in November, and they can get even better deals by booking midweek as opposed to weekends throughout the year. “Our goal is to be as accommodating as possible, so those couples who are flexible with dates often get their fairy-tale wedding for much less than they ever expected. People really are quite shocked at how reasonable our off-season rates are.” With the main wedding season drawing close, Swaneset is gearing up for another busy year. Currently it’s doing complete renovations to the bridal room, re-painting the ballroom, and laying new carpet in several locations. Keeping things fresh is just part of the service that Swaneset works hard to provide all of

its guests. Naturally, those guests don’t all belong to wedding parties as Swaneset is also a premier destination for golfers who come to enjoy the same beautiful amenities that attract those looking to tie the knot. With a members-only lounge, the busy West Coast Grill, a huge patio, and two Lee Trevino-designed, 18-hole golf courses, it’s easy to see why golfers love Swaneset as much as the bridal set. Tim Fuchihara, director of golf, says the golfing is great at Swaneset these days. It may be a bit wet out there at times, but the staff is diligent in its ongoing efforts to ensure the courses are in tip-top condition year-round. As a semi-public course, Swaneset attracts golfers of every kind, from those who are passionate for the game, to those who take in a tournament or two each year for business purposes. “Our knowledge and experience in helping corporate organizers plan great tournaments is one of the key reasons people seek out Swaneset for golfing opportunities,” says Fuchihara. “I’m very pleased to say our golfers consider the guest experience here to be first rate. They love the courses, the club house, the patio. But the service is definitely key.” He also notes that individual golf rates are very competitive for the Greater Vancouver area, while the tournament packages (for 50 to 288) are the same, so there’s something for everyone. “We’re always working to attract tournament play,” says Fuchihara. “Helping companies and community organizations plan the perfect event is a main goal for the golf side of our operation.” And in case you’re wondering, yes, there are still dates available in 2018 for those who want to host a tournament for their organization. Just call to find out more about how Swaneset can help. So, whether you’re looking to plan the perfect wedding day, or the perfect day on the links, Swaneset Bay Resort and Country Club is definitely the place to play.

Never forget that the classroom is the child’s domain. The teacher’s job is to guide the child through a world of learning and discovery.

A good teacher can stand back and observe, waiting for learning opportunities. Education doesn’t have to be intrusive.

Listen. Sometimes a child just needs to talk. That needs to be respected. Children are just smaller, not inferior and shouldn’t be ignored.

Children should be allowed to learn at their own pace and in accordance to their own interests. Build on those interests and incorporate other skills into that road of discovery.

Keep it fresh and exciting. There are a lot of activities that have been around for a long time, but a fresh approach and an obvious enthusiasm can breathe new life into well established activities.

Little Garden Montessori Center a place of respect and discovery Parents, particularly those with more than one child, know that every child is unique. Like all of us, every child has their own likes and dislikes, and the things that interest, challenge or excite them are as varied as they are for any person. We are all different. That’s why Victoria Bennett and her family of instructors at the Little Garden Montessori Center in Maple Ridge make a point of catering every lesson, activity and learning experience to the unique characteristics of the children in their care. “If you look at the way schools have operated in the past, the teaching approach was pretty much the same for every child. For some, that approach would work, and those children excelled. But there was always a group of children who didn’t respond well to a blanket approach and those children would sort of muddle through, never reaching their full potential,” said Victoria Bennett, the owner and driving force behind Little Garden. “Then you have the children who just don’t get it. They have traditionally been the children who either, fall through the cracks, they were the class clowns, or the children with behavioural problems, because they were not getting what they needed to learn and grow.” At Little Garden Montessori Center, children are treated as individuals and the educational programs are designed to cater to each child’s individual interests and abilities. The key, according to Bennett, is to make every learning opportunity interesting, challenging and exciting. One of the keys to this approach is to allow the child the chance to explore and discover while supporting that journey of discovery in a clean and orderly environment, with minimum distractions. “We have no computers or devices in

our facility, and screen time is rare. Our learning is catered to each child, whether that is playing a board game or doing a field trip to experience the world first hand,” said Bennett. It’s an approach that, at all times, is coupled with the development of self respect and the ideal of always respecting others. That educational approach is followed for every age group attending the center, from children as young as 10 months old, who can attend on either a full-time or part-time basis, to children up to 12, who attend the center on a before-andafter-school basis.

Children are not inferior, they are just smaller and less experienced, and deserve respect and caring in the same way as we respect the needs of adults. Victoria Bennett For toddlers, the education can be as simple as learning about their clothing, and learning how to dress themselves, giving them a chance to explore options without being rushed. It can also involve lessons, such as how to use a spoon, or learning the fundamental bathroom skills we all take for granted as adults, but which can be quite daunting for the little ones at the center. For children five and older, care is provided before and after school, as well as all school breaks and professional development days.

“For the school-aged children, we meet the challenge of keeping them engaged, according to their own interests and abilities, with a host of choices that you might not initially think of - things like how to make balloon animals, or open-ended art activities or how to learn tricks with a Yo-yo,” said Bennett. “One of the activities we’ve introduced is knitting, and if you think for a minute that this is something only the girls would find interesting, you’d be wrong. It’s the boys who have really taken an interest in knitting and have produced some remarkable work.” In the end the approach at Little Garden Montessori Center revolves around treating every one of the children as individuals with their own skills and strengths, and sometimes the individual challenges they have to cope with and overcome. Children, observed Bennett, are not inferior, they are just smaller and less experienced, and deserve respect and caring in the same way as we respect the needs of adults. “The truth is that I’ve loved taking care of children ever since I can remember,” recalls Bennett. When she was 11 years old, she took a babysitting course, then marketed her services to the neighbourhood with homemade business cards. She loved the work, and when she discovered the Montessori method and how beneficial it was for children’s education, she knew that it was something she wanted to explore further. She attended the North American Progressive Montessori Teacher Training and, after working at a variety of other child care facilities, she moved on to her work at Little Garden with an enthusiasm that was never abated. Her staff of amazing instructors have been carefully selected to reflect dedication to educating children within a shared philosophy of respect and caring.

2 018 M A R K E T P L A C E James Cameron School: transformation in education For more than 30 years, James Cameron School has taken great pride in delivering quality education to elementary children who have been diagnosed with a specific learning disorder, such as dyslexia. This is done by following the Ministry of Education curriculum taught with adaptations and accommodations to maximize student success. The school recognizes that all students are diverse in the ways in which and the rate at which they learn – emotionally, physically, and intellectually. The school’s purpose is to help students who struggle with reading, writing and spelling reach their true potentials. Like all of us, students at James Cameron have great strengths and weaknesses. Often students who come to James Cameron School have suffered school-based trauma. That is, their difficulties have not been understood. Subsequently, they are prevented from realizing their potential, often at the cost of their self-esteem and joy of learning. They are capable and creative, but need a more specialized approach to learning than most schools can support. A key objective at the school is building confidence. Students with dyslexia, ADHD and other learning disorders can be extremely successful given a supportive learning environment. When students do not feel anxious and overwhelmed because they are taught in a setting specifically tailored to their learning challenges, they get the best chance of academic success. Interested parents can contact the school and book a private appointment with principal Penny Shepherd-Hill. Parents can take a tour and see if the school is a good fit for their child. Students are enrolled year-round, class space permitting. Shepherd-Hill emphasizes the importance of early intervention. In addition to regular classroom learning, students are set up to work one to one with an Orton-Gillingham tutor in a relaxed environment that allows them to work at their own pace. Orton-Gillingham (OG) is widely recognized as a successful model for overcoming language-based learning disorders such as dyslexia. The OG scope and sequence takes approximately three years of consistent application to be fully effective. This is why engaging students early in their learning cycle is critical. “All children should be screened in kindergarten. As it stands now, the public

school system doesn’t assess until Grade 3 or later,” said Shepherd-Hill. “It is up to the parents to pay for an early assessment or wait.” Shepherd-Hill urges parents to trust their instincts. Dyslexia and other learning disorders are often genetic and usually parents know instinctively if their child is struggling. Harmony van Gogh can attest to the challenging journey faced by parents. Harmony, herself dyslexic, strongly suspected her daughter Emily had a learning disorder. Rather than enrol her in the public system, the family undertook a distributed learning program – an enhanced form of home schooling supported by the B.C. Ministry of Education.

“There aren’t words to describe what it is like to see your child finally understood” – Harmony van Gogh. “I knew the public system was overstressed and I did not want Emily to fall through the cracks,” said van Gogh. When Emily was seven years old, she was assessed, and tutoring was recommended. The van Goghs hired a private Orton-Gillingham tutor and Emily received two years of tutoring. Private tutoring is expensive and difficult to schedule, and the van Goghs feared Emily was falling behind her age group. They wanted a cohesive consistent education experience for their daughter. The van Gogh’s heard about James Cameron through a network of other parents, and Harmony had come across mentions of the school while researching dyslexia as she grappled with finding solutions for her daughter. The family took a tour of the school and Emily attended a “trial day.” Two weeks later she was enrolled. Harmony van Gogh describes the transition to James Cameron with tears in her eyes. “There aren’t words to describe what it is like to see your child finally understood. Emily had an instant connection with her

teacher. The teacher knows how to meet her needs and set boundaries. I only wish I had enrolled her sooner.” What started as a fearful journey filled with profound concern for Emily’s longterm outcomes has become a transformational one, with a bright outlook. Twelve-year old Emily is both dyslexic and dysgraphic. In just over a year at James Cameron, she has gone from not reading at all to reading at a 10-yearold level, a testimony itself to how an integrated approach can help students thrive. Emily is a smart kid. A creative big-picture thinker, she has her sights set on a university degree in animal psychology and is looking forward to high school. She works hard and is proud of her accomplishments. “With all the support and acceptance I’ve had, I feel like the school really understands how I learn. I really like the diversity at the school and that all the kids still have a shared experience. Everyone understands where you’re coming from. Everyone goes for tutoring. Everyone gets support. It’s very inclusive,” said Emily. “In the public system, these kids have to work twice as hard to be considered half as good,” Harmony said. “The teachers simply aren’t trained to respond to their learning styles. At James Cameron, Emily gets to experience real pride in her accomplishments.” Emily is proud of her mom, too. Harmony is studying to become an Orton-Gilligham tutor. Inspired by the success of her own child, van Gogh wants to help other children succeed. “I see a real need,” she said, “and I am frustrated that this kind of specialized help is not that easily available. I see an opportunity to help fill that gap,” she added. “I think it’s very cool that she is going to help dyslexic kids based on her own experience,” said Emily. “My mom will be able to say to the kids, ‘I know what it is like.’ Knowing someone understands, that’s important.” • James Cameron School is located in Maple Ridge on Dewdney Trunk Road. Students attend from all over the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley. Additional resources include a Parents Support Group, carpooling partners, workshops for parents and transition support for students going into Grade 8 at a new school. More information is available on the school’s website at www.jcs.bc.ca.

when buying industrial space

1 Concrete and steel

used with tilt-up methods of building are the premium materials and methods in today’s industry.

2 Buy from an

experienced builder who engages with local trades, suppliers and consultants.

3 Stay away from

properties in the flood plain and low-lying areas.

4 Own your own space. Pay your mortgage off, not that of your landlord.

5 This is a long-term

investment, so think about size, function, form and sustainability when making a decision to purchase your own space.

North Kanaka Work Spaces owner wants to keep business owners on solid ground Builder and developer Phil Cooper has spent more than 40 years building a sturdy reputation as a local business person and now he wants to help others to do the same thing. Cooper’s next project, North Kanaka Work Spaces, is a sustainably built multi-unit industrial complex in northeast Maple Ridge, which is attracting small business operators from throughout the North Fraser Sector, from west Mission to the Tri-City area and everything in between. He’s already presold 15 of the 39 units slated to begin construction this spring at 12835 Lilley Avenue in northeast Maple Ridge. There is a shortage of industrial space in the Metro Vancouver area and a huge demand for this type of real estate, so the balance of the units will be absorbed over the construction timeline. Cooper started his career in building as an apprentice carpenter. He then attended UBC and took courses in industrial education. By this time, there was a huge slump in the market, interest rates were at 21 per cent and he had the opportunity to teach woodworking at Garibaldi Secondary. This one-year teaching job was a great experience and helped him become grounded in the community. His goal was to become a builder and it wasn’t long before the market started to roll in the early ’80s. His timing was good and he was soon building single-family homes, townhomes, apartments and land developments. He was told early on in life that the key to success was the relationships that you build with good quality people, those that will endure through the ups and downs you’ll experience during your career. Cooper has spent the last decade developing industrial spaces and completed Webster’s Corner Business Park in

2008. He’s worked tirelessly over the past decade to create a successful business park made up of 43 units and more than 70,000 sq. ft. of work spaces. Webster’s Corners Business Park includes a mix of businesses, including machinists, marine mechanics, cabinet makers, millworkers, food distributors, trades, bakers and a soap maker.

North Kanaka Work Spaces is surrounded by a park, green belt and a community forest. This biosphere aligns with Cooper’s passion for the natural world. These business owners have created a synergy where people help each other, Cooper says. Young adults are also learning valuable skill sets and getting a chance to build, make, design and repair things. Cooper’s new endeavour, North Kanaka Work Spaces, is being built on a reclaimed gravel pit that’s more than 600 ft. above sea level. He points out that the majority of industrial lands are developed in flood plain areas of the Lower Mainland and could be susceptible to flooding damage. He advises never to invest in such areas as it may have a very negative impact on your investment. This will never

happen on the lands he is developing on higher ground, Cooper adds. His dealings with the City of Maple Ridge over the years have helped him understand that the proper development of employment lands is vital to a healthy local economy. City staff are currently working on transportation projects and initiatives that will help business people who are setting up shop in this area. North Kanaka Work Spaces is surrounded by a park, green belt and a community forest. This biosphere aligns with Cooper’s passion for the natural world. There will be many sustainable features built into this new project, including bioswale ditches, storm retention pods, rain harvesting, solar ready units, insulated walls. Best of all, the buildings will be made entirely of concrete and steel — they will literally last for centuries. Cooper’s concern about the acceleration of climate change encouraged him to get involved with the many like-minded people in Stave Falls where he lives. This group is working with school trustees and the staff of Mission School District to reopen a local school that has been boarded up for 10 years. The school is perfectly situated on 10 acres of land and close by Rolley Lake, Stave Lake and its watersheds. The group hopes to have it reopen as a forestry-based elementary school and Maple Ridge kids would be welcome to enroll. It’s imperative that we encourage and train our kids to become the future stewards of our lands, forests and waterways, Cooper says. For more information about purchasing industrial space in the North Fraser Sector, please feel free to contact Phil Cooper personally at 604-240-9073 or visit the web site for features details, availability and pricing.

DENTISTRY

CO N S U M E R

TIPS

1 Get started early.

Children can be getting checkups by the age of one to get them accustomed and comfortable with the dentist.

2 Diet is important.

Avoid sugary drinks and between-meal snacks.

3 Teach your children to brush and floss. It’s a lifetime habit that can’t begin too young.

4 Regular check-ups

are just as important for children as they are for adults. Don’t wait for a problem to develop.

5 Children react best

to specially trained pediatric dental care givers. Take the time to choose your dentist carefully.

Pediatric dentists treat kids like they were their own Dr. Nancy Vertel’s approach to pediatric dentistry has its roots in becoming a mother herself. She realized that children represented a different set of challenges in the way they cope with dental treatment and that even a single negative experience can have lifelong repercussions to the young patient. It wasn’t always that way. “We have parents come to us because they had a bad experience when they were young and they don’t want the things that happened to them to happening to their own children,” explained Dr. Vertel, the head of Maple Ridge Dentistry for Kids. “It’s interesting that all of our dentists are mothers themselves. We put ourselves in our clients shoes and treat them with care and understanding that is based on our experience and understanding.” Pediatric dentistry requires all the advanced skills of a regular dentist, but Dr. Vertel maintains that those skills have to be coupled with a deep understanding of childhood development, and the limits that children have when coping with stressful situations. It requires 3 extra years of full-time training after completion of dental school and certification that has qualified Dr. Vertel and her associates as Certified Specialists in the fields of pediatric dentistry. “The skill set goes beyond dentistry and into an understanding of the behavioural factors involving children,” she said. The service provided has earned the business a good reputation in Maple Ridge, where the practice already counts about one-sixth of all the children in the city as patients. That number has developed, not only from the word-of-mouth testimonials of parents to their counterparts in the community, but from the recognition by other dentists who value

the specialized service. “Regular dentists often find children to be very challenging,” said Dr. Vertel. “A lot of children are showing much more tooth decay than we might have seen in years past, as a changing diet, the prevalence of sugary soft drinks, frequent snacks and a lack of appropriate brushing and flossing have all combined to create a challenging situation for children’s dental health. When a dentist sees a young patient with serious problems, they realize that it would be best for them to be referred to our service where we have the expertise to address the situation.” Dr. Vertel said that parents are also learning that it’s wise to bring their children in early – when they are as young as a year old – so that they develop a familiarity and comfort level with their “dental home.” She said that children become comfortable with the environment in the dental office, and that feeling can have longterm benefits when and if more serious treatment is necessary. “Even when we do have to do some work with our young patients, we do so in a way that never instills fear or discomfort. We don’t even mention needles, for example, preferring to use methods like mild to moderate oral sedation, or even general anesthesia.” Dr. Vertel also said other factors are taken into account and that the dentists at Maple Ridge Dentistry for Kids have

specialized skills that allow them to deal with children with special needs, and even respond to children with language barriers. “We have staff who can speak to children in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and even Arabic. That can make a tremendous difference in creating confidence and diminishing fears in children who need to understand what’s happening to them.” The practice at Maple Ridge Dentistry for Kids goes beyond just regular checkups and dentistry services. Specialized staff with pediatric dentistry training have the ability to deal with orthodontic challenges facing your child’s teeth, and any jaw and facial development problems that may be developing. “Orthodontic treatments are always specifically designed to suit our patient, including children and teens with special needs. There are a lot of different treatments available, from braces to removable appliances, such as retainers, and we’ll always explain to the young patient which options are best for them and why. And we do it in a way they can understand.” Dr. Vertel said that it’s an approach that requires a great deal of trust, confidence and comfort with your dental professional. “A child needs to understand what’s being done, and what’s happening as the treatment progresses,” said Dr. Vertel. “The approach at Maple Ridge Dentistry for Kids is for our staff to treat every child as though they were their own. We help children understand the importance of dental health and are really there to educate them about how to stay healthy for the rest of their lives. We’re building a foundation that will last a lifetime, and that’s so important.”
