Sitting in a large circle, inside the school gymnasium, a group of seniors begin bouncing a ball, first slowly, then faster.

Under the careful eye of their instructor, the group switches from balls to ribbons, then stretches and other exercises.

A mix of chatter and laughter can be heard as the group obviously enjoys the exercise and the camaraderie.

It’s all part of Mission Lifetime Learning Centre’s Osteo-Fit program, one of many fitness classes offered by the local group.

It’s an opportunity to make friends and stay healthy and participants seem to love it.

“I’ve been coming for more than 10 years,” said Barbara Fisk after the workout on Tuesday morning.

Asked why she keeps coming back, Fisk got right to the point.

“We need the exercise, and its good for our brains as well as our bodies,” she explained.

“It’s also become a sort of social network.

We’ve made friends and tell one another our stories,” Fisk added.

Lorraine Bjorklund, who has attended the classes for more than a decade, agrees.

“We’ve made friends we never would have otherwise, because we never would have known all these people. We go for coffee after, it’s the social part.”

Both ladies say they take part in other programs offered at Lifetime Learning.

“We do a lot of other things here too.”

Exercise instructor Alvina Tyler has been teaching since 1982. The past five years she

has taught six classes a week in Mission as well as others in Abbotsford.

She said it is important for seniors to stay on the move.

Tyler explained that the class helps seniors to maintain range of motion for their joints and to maintain balance for fall protection.

“You need balance, agility and strength,” she said.

But the program doesn’t just work on the body, it also works on the mind.

“We do cognitive challenges too,” said Tyler, adding that the program was designed

by BC Women’s Hospital.

“The exercises were chosen by physiotherapists. It’s a purposeful exercise regiment,” Tyler also agrees that the social part aspect is “really important” and encourages people to try other programs.

“There’s a lot of really great mindenriching programs here,” she said.

Lifetime Learning is a Centre for Community Education and Wellness Programs located in Mission. Modeled on the concept of an “ElderCollege” it provides active living and healthy aging programs for adults.

For the past 30 years, Lifetime Learning Centre Society has provided active living and healthy aging opportunities through its community and general interest adult education programming.

It is a non-profit organization, and all monetary donations are tax deductible.

INGREDIENTS: 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into 1 1/2-inch cubes 1 pound carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks 6 large potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 white onion, cut into large chunks DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Toss beef cubes with flour to coat, then fry in the hot oil until browned.

2. Place the carrots, potatoes, onion and garlic in a large slow cooker. Place the meat on top of the vegetables.

A Dressing Needs offers specialized outerwear designs and adaptive clothing. We strive to ease dressing routines and promote inclusion for people living with a disability.

I, Amberin Bonnett, opened A Dressing Needs an Adaptive Clothing Company to provide functional fashion to people living with a disability. My education (B.A in Psychology, BA in sociology), work experience and upbringing all combine together to help me create designs that assist easing dressing/personal care routines and promote inclusion to people of all different ability levels. Since beginning, we have designed many custom garments (ex. denim pants for Catheter use) and some standard adaptive designs that are beneficial to overcome common challenges associated with dressing (easy on Outerwear).

Regular Outerwear is cumbersome to put on independently and does not protect the lower body from becoming wet and cold. If blankets are used to cover the legs (or a Standard poncho) it can pose a safety issue when the covering becomes caught in the front wheels of the wheelchair. Our poncho is designed to be safe and convenient for the user and is compatible with most wheelchairs & mobility scooters.

ACE 125:

A MISSION SENIOR ASSOCIATION PROJECT What is ACE 125?

How Does This Benefit Mission?

Small business thrives across British Columbia with over 98% of all registered businesses being classified as small enterprises. Of these small enterprises 56% are self employed businesses with no paid help and 82% are organizations with fewer than five employees. ACE 125 is a project looking to leverage this high percentage of small businesses and execute a mentorship program where retired professionals act as mentoring resources and utilize their decades of professional experience to help young entrepreneurs succeed.

The short-term goal of the project is to create a business case and proof of concept for long term research into providing quality of life benefits to the retired population. This will be achieved using appropriate retiree skill sets with new or struggling youth owned small businesses. Program operation partners will include community organizations, such as the Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures North Fraser, Mission School District 75 (SD 75), community sponsors.

Long term research partners for evaluating and providing strategic advice will include the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), Simon Fraser University (SFU).

Developing successful small businesses in the District of Mission will increase employment, provide additional tax revenue and introduce a research program from leading Canadian University’s into our community. The benefits of this research are: • Increase professional employment in the community.

• Promote the District of Mission as a progressive place to start a business and retire.

• Develop a knowledge based economy.

• Attract additional research companies.

• Develop educational tourism.

• Attract enterprises owned by the 55+ demographic.
