How to plan for the best
summer camp experiences The Alberta Camping Association provides tools to narrow down possibilities
It may be early in the year, but local summer camp staff are already well into planning for an array of activities to keep local youth engaged. Central Alberta features all kinds of summer camps, geared towards those with a passion for dance, a penchant for horseback riding or those who want to spend time learning about the Bible while still enjoying a host of recreational opportunities. There are also camps suited to those with a range of sporting sensibilities where
swimming, canoeing, wall climbing and the wonders of the outdoors are explored. Many aim to provide a wide variety of activities to foster growth, learning, a sense of adventure and independence all while offering plenty of fun, healthy activities for kids to be a part of. Choosing a camp may seem like an overwhelming venture considering the multitude of choices, but the Alberta Camping Association (ACA) provides tools to narrow down the
possibilities. The Association is a notfor-profit organization and a community of camp professionals, seasonal employees, volunteers, and supporters of organized summer and youth camps. The Association also provides education, networking opportunities and resources for youth camps and outdoor centres across the province. An online resource library offers members helpful resources on a wide range of
topics including business and finance, volunteer management, research and trends in camping, site and facilities, programming and activities, food services, leadership training and many more. Articles are also posted regularly on the Alberta Camping Association Blog, as well as on facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile, with hundreds of camps ranging from day camps, residential, and out trip camps focusing on activities like horseback riding, canoeing, mountaineering, to art, drama, and science there is a lot to choose from. To find out what activities or type of camp that would fit with your child best, visit the Association’s camp directory. Something else to keep in mind is that ACA member camps have been accredited with the stamp of ACA approval. “That means they reach a high level of standards and follow strict protocols to make sure your child is getting the best experience in the safest environment. These standards are related to things like site, facility, administration, leadership,
Summer Day Camps for children aged 5-11 years at Sunnybrook Farm Museum Have your children join our museum interpretive team for a themed daily or weekly summer day camp experience, as we travel back in time and learn about pioneer life in early Alberta. Children will feed farm animals, make butter, pump water, cook on a wood stove, do pioneer crafts, and take part in fun farm activities. Explore our 1889 log house, oneroom school, dairy barn, blacksmith shop, and take a ride on the barrel train. Join us for our new theatre, music, and pioneer cooking camps!

health, food service, and programming.” Meanwhile, parents can continue their research by visiting each individual camp’s web site to learn about the camp’s philosophy, the type of programs offered, session lengths, start dates and cost. The ACA offers a complete list of camps – there is an excellent tab on the web site called ‘Search for a Camp’ which lists areas of interest ranging form baseball, biking and kayaking to cycling, sailing, backpacking and tennis. Those searching for the best camp can check off specific interests and the program finds camps that specialize in those areas. Profiles of a number of camps are presented which can then be explored at your leisure. Also available on the ACA web site is a section specifically geared to parents and the questions or concerns they might have. There is information on choosing a camp, preparing for camp or when a child has to head off to camp on their own. Another way to find out about overall camping ex-
periences is to simply ask around. According to the site, “Further still, you can ask your friends, family and neighbours about their camping experience. Perhaps they have a camp to recommend or can help you with your research. If you think you have the right camp in mind, talk to others to see how they found their experience there. There are indeed many advantages to signing up for camp. Kids can learn all kinds of new things, establish new friendships and learn a bit about positive growth and independence. “Going to summer camp is a big step for kids and parents, but the benefits will last a lifetime. Your child will practice independence, make new friends, learn new things, and experience positive growth.” For more helpful tips about all things related to the summer camp experience, check out www. albertacamping.com. Camps for creative kids at
Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery

Types of summer camps to choose from Day camps
Day camps operate for periods of one to eight weeks, providing opportunities for children to enjoy a camping experience during the day while sleeping at home. This type of camp may be viewed as an introductory stage to camping at a high comfort level.
Residential camps
Residential Camps operate for periods of one to eight weeks, offering many different landscapes and experiences. The activities offered, the style of accommodations and the camp’s philosophy vary with each camp.
Religiously-affiliated camps
By Michelle Falk
The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery is the place to be this summer for kids interested in a week packed with artistic fun, right in the City. “The camps are unique—it is designed to be a fun way to learn about art and history themes,” said Karli Kendall, marketing associate at Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery. Back by popular demand, this is the third year of the summer camp program at the Museum. “Kids like the art projects, and an opportunity to explore and interact in the Museum exhibits, as well as playing games outside and going to the splash park,” she said. The programs also give kids the op-
portunity to check out what happens behind the scenes at the MAG. They also get to explore careers that may interest them in the future. “Kids get to role play as museum/ gallery curators, get tours through our back collection or tour the downtown sculptures, set up mini-exhibits and handle museum artifacts,” Kendall said. MAG offers week-long summer day camps running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers ages six to eight and nine to 11 enjoy art, games, adventures and learning opportunities that only a Museum can offer. In the same way that traditional summer camps have kids learn life-skills and teamwork through fun activities in the outdoors, MAG summer camps also provide teaching opportunities
through creative expression. Kendall emphasizes that camp is always big on fun, though. MAG employees are specially trained to ensure that programming is always exciting. “All of our camp staff have ‘High 5 Training’ which creates an active and dynamic environment that may not be expected at a museum,” she said. Each camp is designed for optimal escapades including daily outdoor activities. “They are learning museum job skills in a fun, exploratory way while expressing their creativity through art projects and play; and they make new friends,” Kendall said. Registration for summer camps opens March 1st.
These camps operate programs as an extension of their community work. In some cases, religious studies form a portion of the program, while in other cases it may simply represent the source of staff commitment and the philosophy of the programs.
Agency sponsored camps
There is a wide variety of social service and publicly-funded organizations that maintain a camping program as an extension of the service they offer the community.
Special needs camps
Most camps can accommodate certain special needs; parents of campers with physical, mental, developmental, or emotional needs are advised to investigate those camps which are designated to serve those particular needs.
Municipality camps
Many municipalities operate a camping program within their recreational program. Typically, these programs are of a day camp nature on sites in the community.
Private camps
The term ‘private’ refers to the ownership of the camp rather than the clientele. The philosophy, staffing, program decisions and the site development are often closely associated with the owner/operators’ leadership style.

Lots of adventures await at
Camp Alexo
By Carlie Connolly
Camp Alexo, run by Boys and Girls Clubs in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, is a non-denominational camp out by scenic Nordegg. Established in 1984, the camp is for those ages seven to 18. “There’s a major belief that the outdoor wilderness environment paired with positive role models and positive relationships give countless opportunities for young minds to grow and develop,” said Les Waite, community resource and manager of Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer and District. He added that it’s their priority to ensure that children are not denied an opportunity of this nature due to financial or other circumstances. “We offer subsidies for families that want to apply. Our rates are also subsidized to a certain degree.” Waite said there are lots of things that make Camp Alexo a special place to attend, including the staff, affordability and relationship-building. “We’ve got a well-trained staff team that really wants to take kids on safe, exciting journeys throughout the surrounding wilderness. We’re very affordable and we put
a lot of emphasis on the relationships with the kids, because our mission is to empower children and youth to develop confidence and skills for life through knowledge, healthy relationships and quality experiences,” said Waite. John Johnston, fund development coordinator with Youth HQ, has been a part of Camp Alexo since the beginning. “Over the past 40 years, over 22,000 young children have been able to benefit from Camp Alexo,” said Johnston. He added that it’s a camp that’s open to all children, with an emphasis on children and families facing social and/or economic barriers. “I think a big benefit is we’re really committed to the quality of impact on the youth, and not to compare to other camps, but there are large operations out there where a child can go to camp and then come home after and no one really even knew they were there. “We have a real strong belief in maximizing the impact of the mentor on the child or the counsellor,” he said. That’s why the camp maintains a ratio of three to one.
“For every three children there’s a counsellor in support of them,” said Johnston. With the camping programs geared towards outdoor learning, self-development and teamwork, there’s lots of activity options for kids to choose from including hiking, canoeing and more. “We offer transportation from Red Deer and Innisfail,” said Waite, adding that pickup and drop off locations include the Collicutt and the No Frills parking lot in Innisfail. In 2014, Camp Alexo underwent a three-year revitalization master plan, which included a lot of new buildings, a new main lodge and a $2.4 million project completed in three years. Johnston said it looks like a brand new camp now, and it will be around to serve kids in the community for another 30-plus years. “We’ve had incredible community support to make that happen. We’ve had over 35,000 hours of volunteer time and 850-plus volunteers who contributed to that project to make that happen for that camp.” For more information on programs and pricing visit http://youthhq.ca/organization/camp-alexo/.

Three benefits of summer camp Still on the fence about whether or not to sign your kids up for summer camp? While the decision is yours, evidence shows that the experience is usually as beneficial as it is fun. In 2012, researchers at the University of Waterloo demonstrated that summer camp has a clear positive effect on the development of youth. Here are three ways summer camp benefits kids. 1. A richer social life At camp, kids forge new friendships and develop their self-esteem. Spending time with peers outside of school fosters campers’ emotional intelligence, which helps them act more comfortably in social settings. Spending time at summer camp is a fun way to get your kids ready to head back to class, especially if they’ll be starting the coming year at a new school. 2. A more active lifestyle Between hiking, canoeing and swimming, there’s no time to be idle at summer camp. Campers take on an
active lifestyle, and many of them discover, or rediscover, the joys of being on the move. Researchers have also demonstrated that children are more likely to exercise regularly after frequenting summer camp. At a time when sedentary living is a major concern among public health specialists, signing your kids up for camp is a clear step in the right direction. 3. Greater environmental awareness Stargazing, navigating calm waters and exploring the forest give kids the opportunity to discover nature in all its beauty. Girls and boys who frequent summer camp become aware of the importance of protecting this precious environment. The experience engenders a positive relationship with the natural world and the drive to protect it. Whether or not your kids have a particular interest in wildlife, sending them to camp can bolster their respect and care for nature and the environment.

Learn to design video games at Red Deer College’s summer camp
By Michelle Falk
Summer camps are no longer just for ‘out-doorsy’ types anymore, now there are great options for kids who are less eager to roast marshmallows and go canoeing. Alberta is the third largest game producer in Canada, behind B.C. and Quebec. There are more than 26 design companies in the province. We spoke with James Wilson, Video Game Design Camp’s initiator and facilitator from Red Deer College about what kids can expect from a week at the camp. How have summer camps changed in the last decade? “The format of camp has changed, but not necessarily the essence of camp. We are just taking it in a direction that piques kids’ interests. It’s not even so much about playing video games as having something the kids enjoy and can use to relate to each other. We do play video games, but it’s more about making them.” What aspects of traditional summer camp are retained? “It’s the same kind of philosophy of having to work together. We put them together in groups of four, they
divide up work tasks and work on the story together. They are learning soft-skills like how to talk to each other and collaborate, just like at a traditional camp. “We still get them playing field games outside, but we approach it from a problem-solving angle. We get them to re-invent games, things like how can we make tag better. When we frame it that way they have fun running around outside and they get really competitive.” How long has the program been running? “It’s one of our newer camps; this is our sixth year.” How many kids can attend the camp? “It varies from year to year, based on what the College is doing. We are constrained by the number of computers we can get access to. This year we can take 50 kids. “The past two years we ran two separate weeks of the camp because there was so much demand, that way we were able to take 80 kids. I never want to turn a kid away, if it’s something they want to do I want to have them here.” Do kids return for more than one year? “They’re certainly welcome to come back. We have had some kids come back for two or three years. We try
to keep it fresh. We have a different theme each year. We always try and change it up.” What do kids like about the camp? “The number one thing is, they make meaningful friendships. For kids out there that maybe feel isolated—that’s really important. “Some of these kids come from really small towns and I often hear from them say, ‘There’s no one else like me in my town’. I’ve seen some kids that have built relationships that last long after the camp ends. They tell me that they kept working on the game together over Skype on the weekends.” What makes this camp unique? “There is nothing else quite like this. We’re using an industry program called Unity and it doesn’t cost much so they can keep using it when they go home. There are lots of camps out there using Minecraft, which is a fairly basic program. We talked with Bioware and other companies and they encouraged us to not just to keep it simple. We picked a middle ground platform that gives some challenges but is learnable in a week.” How rigorous is the curriculum? Is it all work and no play?
“It does take a lot of focus. Coding is not necessarily the most exciting activity. It’s about putting it into the context of an experience they want to have though. “We make sure we get away from the desks too though and have some fun. We’ll start the day with Dance Dance Revolution - it’s a video game they’re playing but they get moving and really competitive.” What skills do kids gain at this camp? “The coding - for some of them it’s the first time they’ve done any coding. When we went and talked to game companies what they said
Summer Soccer campS July 2018 Qualified Instructors Youth player & Goalie camps
the industry really needs is coders with soft skills who are able to have a discussion and relate naturally.” I imagine a video game camp draws a more introverted crowd. Is it a social week for campers? “They overnight in our student residence here for the week. They share a house with three other people and they have a shared common area. Video game camp does attract introverted personalities, so if we see kids sitting by themselves we encourage them to join in and talk with us. Parents are often shocked that after one week their kids have come out of
their shells.” Have any of the campers gone on to continue their studies in Video games? “The camp is still pretty young, so some of those kids that were 13 to 14 are only just getting to the university level. I know of two that are taking Video Game Development Coding at the University of Alberta.” The overnight camp is slated to run from July 8th14th. Registration opened in December. The camp’s official title is Game Design - 2D Platform, CRN 1331 ENGEN Course 6065.

Building a Mathematical foundation! Concerned about your child’s math skills?
Going to camp
without a friend Many campers attend camp without a friend. However, this can be an intimidating experience for some youth. At camp, campers become a part of a cabin group, and each group is led by one or more cabin leaders, whose job it is to personally welcome each camper upon arrival to camp and introduce
them to their cabin mates. Cabin life stresses friendships and cooperative living, through respect, acceptance and cooperation among all members of the group. The cabin group members generally enjoy many of their daily activities together and share a sleeping space for the week.
Camp directors pay careful attention when composing cabin groups. An important consideration is creating a blend of campers conducive to formulating new friends. To help your child Practice making new friends with your child Talk about how to do this with specifics:

Lots to experience at
Camp Kuriakos
BY MARK WEBER
When it comes to choosing a summer camp that fits best with your youngster, Central Alberta certainly has many to consider. One of the most well-rounded would have to be Camp Kuriakos, situated on the scenic shores of Sylvan Lake. “Our big thing that we have been focusing on last summer and this summer as well is giving kids some independence and autonomy in deciding their program while they are here, but doing that as a teamwork experience,” said Kendra Freeland, program director. “All of the kids are in cabins, and we pair two cabins up each week to do their activities together. As a group, they decide, ‘We would like to do these four activities tomorrow’. And then they send two representatives to get together with representatives from the other village groups, and those eight kids have to work together to schedule, so each cabin group gets the activities that they would like to do,” she explained. Feedback on this kind of approach has been terrific. “Last summer, the kids really enjoyed it. The other
place we’re are also really working on in terms of developing kids’ skills is doing camp-outs. Every week, all of the kids go out and spend a night sleeping in a tent. They cook their supper over a fire, they cook breakfast over a fire. They leave around four p.m. to walk out to their campsite - about a five to 10 minute walk from the main campsite, and they set up camp and cook supper.” There is of course supervision, but again the kids are relatively free to decide how they will spend some of their time together. “As a group, they decide, what do we want to do? Will we hang around the fire tonight? “Earlier in the day they have time to plan that there’s a sheet they fill out saying here’s the site we are going to go to, here’s the things we need to take. Here is an activity that we want to do when we are out there.” The kitchen staff packs up the food the group will need for the adventure, and away they go. Again, this kind of approach has been a great success with the campers. “I think it’s good for them to experience something (that might be) outside of their comfort zone. Some
kids are losing touch with nature, so we want to re-encourage that connection. Being outside has so many benefits - physically, socially, emotionally, spiritually,” she said. “So we are trying to set up situations where they are still supervised, but there is not as much of, ‘This is what we are doing right now’. There is that freedom for them to explore creation and to create their own activities.” Freeland added that staff aren’t necessarily there to entertain the kids as much as to give them experiences. “Part of that experience is for them to learn to work together as a group to decide what they are going to do.” Of course, there are loads of things to do at Camp Kuriakos. And there are plenty of camps to choose from, with some for the six to nine age group, others for the 12 to 14 and 14 to 18 ages groups as well. There are weeks with sports and music/drama focuses as well. According to the web site, it was on a Saturday in June, 1931, that Danish settlers from the Dickson area approached a local farmer about donating part of his land for a Lutheran camp.

And apart from being educational and fun, summer camps have a positive effect on the development and self-fulfillment of all participants. Experiencing the thrill of summer camp allows children of all ages to develop their social skills and make new friends. Children also improve their ability to resolve conflicts and learn to better understand their feelings and those of the people around them. They gain more independence and self-confidence, too. Those are some pretty significant benefits, aren’t they? And that’s not counting the fact that many campers also learn how to better protect the environment. make the right choice. Your first priority as a parent is to ensure that your child has lots of fun in a safe environment. So, how to choose the perfect camp from among all those available? It’s simple: just take into account the following criteria. • Everyone’s expectations. Decide what type of experience you want to offer your child. Do you prefer an “all-round” camp or one that explores the world of art? A camp that allows children to specialize in a sport or other talent? Obviously, it’s important to talk about this with your child. By offering various options, your child will be able to clarify his or her expectations and choose an appropriate camp. • Practical details. Discuss the length of stay and type of lodging (dormitory, cottage, tent, etc.). Think about any
special needs your child has (physical or intellectual disabilities, severe allergies, etc.), as well as your own budget restrictions. Armed with these selection criteria, do a bit of research and select some camps that seem especially interesting. Next, look at their websites with your child; the photographs and comments will help you better assess the atmosphere of the camp. If necessary, call for more information about activities, menus and parent-child contact. Alternatively, you could visit the camps; just be sure to make an appointment or check if there is an open house. You can also ask for referrals from family or friends. You’ve made your choice and your child is thrilled? Summer camps often fill up quickly, so don’t wait too long before reserving a place.
