Ages 6-18 years KidSport is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for children to participate in a recognized sport.

Option 1 - Includes lazer tag for 1 hour on the leisure ice and the use of a change room for 1 hour pre or post party. Skate shop staff will be on site for the entire party. This party can accommodate 3 games maximum.

Option 2 - Includes lazer tag for up to 2 hours on the leisure ice with the option to switch it up and play ice hockey or skate for a portion of the 2 hours. The package also includes the use of a party room (either the Pinecrest or Dogwood Room). Skate shop staff will be on site for the entire party.

Want to try something different for your child’s birthday this year? After everyone has gone home and the Strathcona Gardens has closed its doors to the public, we invite children to join us for some overnight fun.

Drop the children off for some late night skating, swimming, lazer tag, sports, relay races and games - 13.5 hours of total fun!

The weary party goers will wind down to a movie with popcorn and then sleep in one of our activity rooms, waking up to a light breakfast all ready for you to pick them up.

We will look after your party goers from 8:30pm until 10:00am the next morning and can take up to 24 children. Two weeks notice is required to book this event.

6-12 years Does your child spend time on your friend’s or family’s boat? Want them to learn the boating basics and how to be safe in and around the water? This program offers participants an opportunity to learn about many aspects of safe boating including: basic navigation regulations,”rules of the road”, responding to emergencies and general pleasure craft operation knowledge.

In the pool the kids will learn how to self rescue and rescue others, practice the HELP and HUDDLE positions and capsizing/ righting a canoe.

3-5 years Enjoy playing a variety of games on the ice while developing your skating skills. This program has the beginner skater in mind with the emphasis on FUN! Stay Safe and Swim to survive camps are offering basic first aid and safety skills for both at home and around the water.

Students will learn about being safe when they are without direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or trusted adult, both at home and in their communities.

Develop your swimming skills, work on your dive, give water polo/underwater hockey/ synchronized swimming a try, take the handstand challenge, learn how to do a flip turn, play sponge tag, have a water fight….

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills.

AQUATIC PROGRAMS Swim Training Program 7+ years Focusing on Stroke Development These training sessions still incorporate some of the components of the Red Cross Learn to Swim Program but there will be more focus put on stroke development, fitness and endurance. Two classes a month will work on the participant’s water safety skills but the remainder of the time will be spent on strokes and entries. Parents will receive a mid-season evaluation and report cards on the last day. Please register for one of the 3 groups below. Parents can register for either 2, 3 or 4 days a week – you get to pick the days!

Excellent program for those swimmers needing winter maintenance.

Each fitness class at Strathcona Gardens is designed to include some or all of the following: Endurance - Increases heart rate and breathing for extended periods of time, which improves heart, lung and circulatory system health. This has also been shown to prevent or delay some diseases.

Strength - Exercises help to build stronger bones and muscles for everyday activities.

Balance - Exercises help to prevent falls and improve abilities in awkward positions.

Stretching - Helps to keep the body limber and flexible.

FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Fluid Motion – These aquatic aerobic classes are conducted in shallow water building endurance, strength and flexibility.

Deep H20 Motion – Great cardio workout, toning muscles while avoiding impact, strengthens thighs, back and abdominal muscles. Must be comfortable in deep water.

Floatation belts are provided.

Adaptive Aquatic Programs – The following programs must have a physician’s consent to participate: Level 1 – This shallow water class is for people starting out in a gentle active program. Patrons that have difficulty with balance and walking or have physical limitations due to orthopedic surgeries will benefit.

Level 2 – These shallow water sessions are for people with limitations such as arthritis, Parkinson’s, M.S., heart/stroke conditions, recovering from an injury or surgery (i.e. hip/knee replacement, chronic back pain, etc.).

Level 3 – This deep-water class is for people with the conditions listed above that are at a maintenance physical activity level. A flotation belt is provided for added stability. It is optional to stay in chest deep water or move to the deep water when comfortable.

SEA OTTER Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under water, further develop basic floats and glides and swim 1m. They also learn ageappropriate water safety skills.

SALAMANDER Learn about active supervision, Stop Look Ask!, jump into chest deep water, buoyant objects, rhythmic breathing, front float and recovery, front glides with kick and a distance swim of 2m.

SUNFISH Safe entries, surface support, floats and recovery in deep water, front and back and side glides with kick, roll over glides and a distance swim of 5m.

CROCODILE Changing direction in deep water, jumping into deep water, surface support, calling for help, glides with kick, front and back swims for 5m and a distance swim of 10m.

WHALE Learn when and where it is safe to swim, jump into deep water and tread water for 20 seconds, stop throw and call for help, front and back swims for 7m as well as a 15m continuous swim.

RED CROSS LEARN TO SWIM ACTIVE IN WATER – Swimming is a great fitness activity–one people can enjoy for a lifetime. Within the cushioning comfort of water, and with little stress on joints associated with some exercises such as running or aerobics, swimming is great for fitness, rehabilitation from injury, and enjoyment. Red Cross lessons put an emphasis on being in the water, so that youth are actively learning skills and exercising their bodies. Exercise is key to a healthy living plan and Red Cross swim lessons can help.

SAFETY LESSONS FOR LIFE – Literally strokes are important, there’s no question. But being a strong swimmer will take you only so far if you don’t also know how to respond in an emergency.

Red Cross lessons teach about safety – water temperature, entries into water, boating knowledge and equipment. These life skills may just save a life.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SWIMMING PROGRAM

 Quality instruction – Red Cross Water Safety Instructors complete more than 60 hours of learning, followed by practice teaching, before ever dipping their toes into your local pool. Research-based programming – with more than 10 years of drowning research to back it, the Red Cross knows why and how people drown, in order to prevent waterrelated injuries and deaths. Research is the cornerstone of Red Cross swimming and water safety. Swimming skills and water safety – swimming alone won’t save a person whose boat overturns in the water. The knowledge to stay safe and survive will. Lots of in-water time – a good swimming program will focus on time spent practicing skills, not on the deck talking about them.

SWIM KIDS LESSONS Ages 5 – 12 years

L2 Work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface, the front swim (5m) and learn about deepwater activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

L3 This level provides an introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15m swim.

L4 Intro to the front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds in deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

L5 Intro to the back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m.

An introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

L6 This level refines front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduces elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Also includes front dive, treading water in deep water for 1½ minutes, dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Drop-in Hockey and Skating Programs 16+ Drop-in Program Hockey This non-contact recreational drop-in hockey program is a great opportunity for players of all levels to participate five days a week. Full hockey gear and CSA approved helmet is required. Participants must sign in and pay at the reception area before playing.

55+ Drop-in Program Hockey This non-contact recreational drop-in hockey program is a great opportunity for players of all levels to participate three days a week. Players are welcome to warm up 15 mins prior to start time. Full hockey gear and CSA approved helmet is required. Participants must sign in and pay at the reception area before playing.

Everyone Welcome Skate or Leisure Skate All ages welcome. Pond Hockey is only available during designated times. If your skating time says “leisure ice” discount rates are in effect because only the leisure ice area is open.

Get a ride to the rink for either a complimentary drop-in skate or for a registered program in either the pool or arena. Participants must bring their own helmet and gloves if they are going to join the public skate or play pond hockey after getting picked up. Registration must be completed by 12:00 noon on the day of desired pick up. Public skate ends at 5:00pm each day – so please make arrangements to have your child picked up by then. Please inform staff at registration if you need the skate staff to get your child to a specific program at the facility. Hurry - space is limited!

Registered Ice Program Descriptions Parent & Tot Skating Lessons: Enjoy playing a variety of games on the ice with your child while you both develop your skating skills. No previous skating experience is required for either participant – the emphasis of this program is fun.

Parent & Tot Hockey Lessons: Parents and tots will get a chance to develop both their skating and hockey skills during this program. Lots of fun for all.

Dash & Splash Swimming & Skating Lesson Combo 2 Lessons for 1 Great Price: This program combines both activities in one trip to the facility.

The first ½ hour is spent on the leisure ice with a skating instructor, parents then have 15 minutes to help their child get changed and head to the pool for a swimming lesson for the last ½ hour. Great deal and time saver.

Ice Quest - Learn to Skate Program: These lessons are designed with the beginner in mind! Our six-step program offers an introduction into the world of iceskating. Please note: Preschool Ice Quest includes a snack and story time each class.

Little Rascals Hockey: Learn basic hockey skills and play a real hockey game every class! Coaches will introduce your child to the game of hockey through a variety of fun drills.

Coolest Game on Earth – Intro to Hockey: If you have never played ice hockey this is the program for you. Learn basic hockey skills and have fun. All participants must be able to skate on their own. Full gear required.

Hockey 101: Is your Minor Hockey player craving “extra ice time”? This popular fast paced after school program includes all aspects of hockey. Passing, shooting, skating, stick handling and organized drills like those in practice will help to elevate their game to the next level. This program sells out quickly so don’t miss out. Youth in the Weight Room You must be 16 years or older to use the weight room without supervision. Youth, ages 12-15, may use the weight room during Supervised Weight Room times after they provide us with a signed Parental Consent form (available at the Sportsplex).

Youth, ages 14 and 15, may use the weight room unsupervised after completing the Independent Youth Weight Training Course.

Independent Youth Weight Training Course 14-15 years Are you 14 or 15 years old and ready to work out on your own? This course involves two sessions about safe and effective weight training, followed by a written exam. After successful completion of the course, you can work out during unsupervised weight room times.

Racquetball and Squash, what is the difference?

Racquetball and squash are racquet sports played indoors in closed courts. Both sports require agility, speed, coordination, and quick movements; and can be played by singles or doubles.

How they differ is their rules, court size, and equipment. Squash balls are smaller than racquetballs, and squash racquets are longer than racquetball racquets.

No Problem!

Racquets and balls are available for rent. One item for $1; or $2 for everything you need.

What is Wallyball?

This sport adds a whole new dimension to the game of Volleyball. Wallyball is basically volleyball played in a racquetball court, and the walls are used to bounce and strategically place the ball.

Protect Your Eyes!

It is mandatory for youth players, age 18 and under, to wear goggles when they play squash or racquetball.
