“I was having an anxiety attack, I could not speak well, so Jake took the phone and he was talking to the police for me. We went upstairs to get fresh air and he stayed with me until paramedics and police arrived. He made small talk to relax me, helped me catch my breath.”

According to several Vancouver media outlets, police later arrested Pierre Belzan of no fixed address, charged him with uttering threats and with assault, and are recommending a charge of sexual assault.

Fadel told the Star she has never experienced that kind of support from someone she has never met. But she is used to people telling her to go back to her country and calling her a terrorist.

She said in the previous two weeks she had had multiple incidents of that, on transit, online, and at her retail job.

“I do my best not to let that negativity get to me and I do my best to stay strong and not let them impact me.”

Fadel said that even though they just met, she and Taylor are now friends.

“He contacted me on Facebook and we are going to be friends through this, and he met my brothers and sisters.

They adore him. He has met some of my friends. I wanted to get his name out there because I want people to know that this guy was just an ordinary guy who risked his life.”

She is not judgmental about the people who did not intervene.

“I wasn’t really wondering why no one

was helping me. It was more of shock and a panic for at least someone to get up and do something. My thoughts are really just thoughts. I can’t go accusing them or asking them why they didn’t move. It’s not an easy decision. The guy could have been carrying a weapon for all they know.

“Rather, move forward and bring awareness and make people understand what can be done next time if one ever witnesses this. We should be educated on such matters. Everyone should.”

Fadel says she is still shaken by the incident.

“I have bad, bad anxiety, I get panicky.

I know this will get better in time. I have my family supporting me and I have my friends, but it is not easy. I just want to be vulnerable and emotional right now, I just want to be not OK for a little bit of time, to heal myself faster.”

As much as she wants the world to be perfect, she said, there will always be people who will judge by appearance.

She said she has always thought there is good in everyone. But that perception has become a bit more complicated since the incident.

“I have to also admit to myself that there is some bad in everyone and everyone is not perfect. I really wish the guy would have known who I really am. I am human. We are all human in the end.”

At the end of her interview with the Star, Fadel asked to make one final comment.

“Be sure to tell them Jake is a star.”

Where are the downtown Christmas lights?

New lighting plan was expected to be done for this year BILL METCALFE Nelson Star

Baker Street is not looking very festive this year, even though many individual businesses have creative Christmas window displays.

For many years until two years ago, a volunteer group decorated the downtown at Christmas with lights and decorations purchased by the city from the Spurway

Trust Fund, a private legacy endowment given for the beautification of the city.

But then the group disbanded and turned the responsibility back to city hall.

“The individual called us and said we just don’t have the time to do this any more,” city planner Pam Meirau told the Star this week, “and so they gave us back all the decorations — lights, wreaths, elves, cutouts, tinsel, many things — most of them are at the end of their life, so it is not like we can just put them back up.”

The city decided instead to incorporate Christmas lighting into its Downtown Urban Design Strategy, which is under development.

“We assessed the decorations and we were also starting our design strategy,” said Mayor Deb Kozak, “and we thought this was an opportunity to pull (the decorations) into a longer term strategy, to think about what decorations were appropriate, to have a plan.”

During the volunteer group’s time, the city purchased lights for businesses downtown to decorate their buildings.

“The lights that were purchased for property owners,” Kozak said, “if you go down Baker they are still on the buildings, but (most of them) are not plugging them in, and I don’t know why.”

Meirau said the draft design strategy includes “a general lighting plan for the downtown as well as a holiday lighting plan. That was on our work plan to do this year, but unfortunately we just never got there.

We had a lot of big projects this year. It is on our plan for next year.”

Kozak said there is no budget for a new lighting plan yet but the city hopes to partner with the business community on it.

She said there were some safety issues with the volunteer group climbing to put up lights, especially when it was discovered that the bases of the Baker Street antique lamp standards, on which volunteers were leaning ladders, were rusting, making them unstable.

“Thank God we discovered this before there was an accident,” she said.

Councillor Bob Adams was part of the Christmas lighting volunteer group and he has championed Christmas lights at many city council meetings.

“I am for getting the lights up,” Adams told the Star. “I am not for waiting for a year, two years, to make a plan.”

Site C dam decision ‘tough’ for Mungall Energy minister says government had no choice

It was a tough day at the office on Monday for Energy Minister Michelle Mungall.

“This was not a decision we wanted to make. It was a hard day for sure,” the NelsonCreston MLA said hours after B.C. Premier John Horgan gave the green light to completion of the Site C hydroelectric dam, after B.C. Hydro revised its cost estimate upward by more than $1 billion.

“I am not pro Site C,” said Mungall, adding, ”We were left with this decision by the previous Liberal government.”

The B.C. NDP cabinet has struggled with the decision, with the project two years in and facing a cost of $4 billion to shut down construction of the third dam on the Peace River and put the site back the way it was.

After hearing from experts for weeks, the government faced an estimate that B.C. Hydro rates are already expected to rise 30 per cent over the next 10 years without the costs of B.C. Hydro.

If the dam is halted, rates would go up another 12 per cent by 2020 to pay the cost. That

translates to an extra $198 per year for an average single-family house.

The risk reserve for Site C has been increased by $700 million to prepare for further costs increases.

B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver said proceeding with Site C was a result of the NDP “pandering for votes” by taking $4.7 billion of Port Mann bridge debt onto the government books to cancel bridge tolls.

Now the province can’t afford the $4 billion cost of stopping the dam, and it has two bad policies based on political expediency, said Weaver who also tweeted out

She also states in the video “We will work on a new solution for our energy needs.”

Weaver states in his tweet that “I would suggest a recall campaign in Nelson-Creston would be in order if Site C is approved on her watch as energy minister.”

Mungall did not speak directly about the video, but did say the Green leader tweets too much and “he doesn’t know our re-

gion.”

When the Site C dam proceeds, government officials expect the additional rate increase would be 6.5 per cent when the dam goes into service in 2024.

B.C. Hydro would likely apply to the B.C. Utilities Commission to “smooth” that rate increase, raising it in smaller steps to pay for the dam.

Horgan blasted the previous B.C. Liberal government for “megaproject mismanagement” that left the NDP government with little choice.

“It’s clear that Site C should never have been started,” Horgan said. “But to cancel it now would add billions to the province’s debt – putting at risk our ability to deliver housing, child care, schools and hospitals across B.C. And that’s a price we’re not willing to pay.”

B.C. Liberal critic Mike Bernier, MLA for Peace River South, said the project had been studied for a decade and 2,000 families and Peace region businesses have been left with uncertainty while the new government’s review carried on.

B.C. Liberal finance critic Tracy Redies, a former B.C. Hydro board member, said the NDP’s review confirmed that with projected growth in electricity demand, B.C. will need the equivalent of nine Site C dams by 2050.

SEEDS to move from Lakeside Park New gardening location will be at Seventh St. Park

SEEDS will be moving from Lakeside Park to Seventh Street Park in Fairview. They will take the portable GroMor greenhouse with them as a gift from the city.

The move comes after both SEEDS and the city decided they want to expand, and there was not enough room for both.

The city owns the land and greenhouses in Lakeside Park in which the non-profit organization SEEDS has been growing food while creating a welcoming space for isolated seniors in the community to gather and

work together with children and youth to produce vegetables which were then donated to food groups in the community.

The city will re-occupy the new greenhouse that was built last year after the original was destroyed by a fallen tree. The GroMor, which SEEDS will take to Seventh St. Park, is the older and more portable greenhouse located beside it.

Seventh St. Park is located in Fairview in the vicinity of Lake View Village seniors housing.

Recently the city decided it needs more room to grow trees and sod in the Lakeside location.

The city’s tree farm is no longer able to supply the city with the trees

they need, so they plan to expand it, says the city’s Chris Gainham. He said they also plan to expand their sod-growing area.

“The growing conditions are also good for the type of sod that we grow for the sports fields,” he said.

“In an active year that sod gets kicked up pretty quickly and that location, that footprint down at Lakeside, is perfect for growing that sod.”

Gainham said Seventh St. Park is a good location because many seniors live in nearby housing developments.

“We thought the park was underutilized and it fit in nicely with the SEEDS mandate,” he said.

Terry Brennan, a board member at SEEDS,

agrees.

“It’s a good compromise. Upon looking at Seventh St. Park, it has better exposure, and looking at the community of seniors that is down there, we felt it was a good option.”

About the GroMor greenhouse, Brennan said, “It’s in fine shape, a little beat up, so we are going to re-skin it with new material and it will be bright and shiny and new.”

Columbia River Treaty renegotiation set to begin in early 2018 CHELSEA NOVAK Castlegar News

Renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty between Canada and the United States will begin in early 2018, according to the U.S. Department of State.

On Thursday, Dec. 7 the Department of State

tweeted: “The United States and #Canada will begin negotiations to modernize the landmark Columbia River Treaty regime in early 2018.

Certain provisions of the Treaty — a model of transboundary natural resource cooperation since 1964 — are set to

expire in 2024. https:// go.usa.gov/xnNr9.”

The treaty was first ratified in 1964.

Canada agreed to provide flood control and to build three dams — Duncan, Hugh L. Keenleyside and Mica — in B.C. and allowed the U.S. to build a fourth dam, the Libby

Dam, that flooded into Canada, in exchange for “an equal share of the incremental U.S. downstream power benefits.”

The treaty has no end date but either country can end it from September 2024 onwards if at least 10 years notice is given.

O

ne of the many happy tasks of a Member of Parliament is meeting up with constituents when they visit Ottawa. Last Thursday I had the pleasure of inviting representatives of the Okanagan wine industry to lunch. They and their legal team had just had a memora-

ble morning intervening in an important Supreme Court action, known as the Comeau case.

Gerard Comeau was charged in 2012 with bringing 14 cases of beer into New Brunswick from Quebec. He argued successfully in a New Brunswick court that the law limiting him to crossing the border with only 12 pints of beer was unconstitutional—the 1867 British North America Act that founded Canada states that products “shall be admitted free into each of the other provinces.”

Despite this direction from our founders, Canadian provinces have developed a myriad of inter-provincial trade barriers over the last 150 years.

Many of these barriers are apparent to business owners—differing corporate registration, food inspection, trucking rules, training for trades, and occupational

health and safety rules, for instance—but the one the public notices most often is the barrier to carrying alcohol across borders.

This is a real problem to Okanagan wineries, many of which have long lists of loyal customers from other provinces, especially Alberta.

These customers buy wine and carry it back home. Some sign up for wine club memberships, one of the main benefits being several shipments of wine to your doorstep each year. Technically, that’s illegal between most provinces.

There was a federal barrier to shipments of wine, but fortunately that was cleared away by a private members bill from MP Dan Albas in 2012. However, most provinces (BC, Manitoba and Nova Scotia are the only exceptions) have their own barriers in place to protect their monopolies on liquor distribution.

Earlier this year, the federal

and provincial governments finalized an inter-provincial free agreement, but unfortunately there were no changes to liquor trade in the document.

So that brings us back to the Comeau case. When the Supreme Court agreed to hear the appeal from the New Brunswick government, the BC wine industry decided to apply for intervenor status in the name of five local wineries.

We won’t know the result of their efforts until the spring, but it is clear that many politicians, bureaucrats, and wine and beer lovers across the country will be waiting with interest. I tried myself to get into the gallery of the Supreme Court on Thursday morning to watch the proceedings, but found the gallery filled to overflowing— such was the intense interest in the case.

eral issues around liquor sales in Canada, for instance the desire of craft distilleries for a cut in the excise tax they have to pay, similar to the discounts enjoyed by small wineries and craft breweries. I spoke in favour of a private members bill that proposed such a measure, but the Liberals voted down the bill last year.

After all this talk of alcohol, please be careful this holiday season and don’t drink and drive.

Yet, now we have an unelected premier and unelected ruling coalition that is going to force us to change the way we elect our government.

They are stacking the deck to ensure their “democratic” vision is the way forward.

But success for them does not mean success for the rest of us.

So I would like to take the pro-life/anti-abortion, prochoice/pro-abortion, discussion in a more personal direction. I am pro-life/anti-abortion. I am because everything I have read, understand and experienced about human rights demands that we respect and value every human being—without exceptions.

Whether it is the UN’s International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights or the Universal Declaration on Human Rights or countless other human rights treaties, covenants and traditions, the bottom line is every human being has an inherent right to life.

Further, the only standard that should be applied to who is a human being, is a scientific/biological one. Religious, philosophical or even legal pronouncements, about when a “soul” enters a human, or what humans should be bestowed personhood, should not trump scientific facts.

Historically, when people try to separate the reality of a flesh and blood human from the legal concept of “personhood” legal protection and respect, terrible atrocities have resulted.

Modern biology declares with no reluctance or qualification that human life begins at conception. That’s good enough for me.

Maybe I am wrong. Maybe someone can explain my error of thinking. If so, I would appreciate being corrected.

Letters Replacing one imperfect system with another Readers have been subjected to numerous writers extolling the advantages of proportional representation. The reality is that they are pushing to change an imperfect system for another imperfect system.

A recent writer harkened to a past minority government that he believed had to listen and/or work with another party that supposedly hastened the introduction of medicare and other social innovations.

Ironically, the writer reverses course and says this is why we should change the electoral system. Yet, obviously this small example showed how our present first past the post system works.

Similar writers lament citizen participation in the present electoral process, yet there is no proof that other systems have substantially higher voter engagement, especially for those who belong to no particular special interest party that is the essence of many proportional representation systems.

Activists being activists, they will always find fault with the system that denies them power. Interestingly, they push a more “democratic” agenda, I wonder if it is the same more democratic agenda that Maduro and his cronies have sprung on the Venezuelan people, who have shed lots of blood to oppose that hijacking in word and action of what we previously deemed a fairly understandable term.

Thanks to the pantomime Re: Alice in Nelsonland not family friendly (Letters, Dec. 6) I trained as a nurse in Yorkshire in the 1950s when we worked on open wards each holding 30 patients. I soon learned a fact of life — that every group holds a Moaning Minnie. I remember one patient yelling at another, “Put a sock in it, you miserable old bugger. If it was Florence Nightingale herself you’d complain her bloody lamp was too bright.”

Pantomime is a labour of love Re: Alice in Nelsonland not family friendly (Letters, Dec. 6) I understand that the Capitol Theatre’s annual pantomime isn’t for everyone, but I did want to say thank you for starting the conversation.

Although I’m sorry you and your family didn’t enjoy the show, I was happy to see and hear the opinions of others who did. I know everyone we know who saw the show had lots of positive feedback, but it is something else to hear from community members who maybe aren’t so biased.

As an extended member of the panto team this year (two of my family members were involved), I know how hard the actors and crew worked to put this show on. Many hours were put in by volunteers and the Capitol staff to get this production off the ground, and it was a true labour of love. Love of the theatre, love of the Capitol, and love of the people of Nelson and Nelson itself.

At its core, this is an effort to raise money to support the ongoing operations and upkeep of this beautiful historic theatre that we are so lucky to have in this little town, as well as entertain and celebrate the community of Nelson. We are all so lucky to live in such a

Through twelve comment boxes placed throughout town, and an online survey, residents were invited to anonymously share their experiences with poverty, however they chose to define the term, and to relay what has helped them when they’ve felt most trapped by their circumstances. 126 people responded.

These responses were given to the project’s artists to use as inspiration for a piece of artwork in whatever medium the artist chose. The community responses, along with the works of art, will be displayed together at the Capitol Theatre Saturday evening.

“There will also be a table sponsored by the Kootenay Art Therapy Institute where the public can express themselves on these topics if that appeals to them,” said Purcell, “Seeing the human condition mirrored through creative expression can be so rich and rewarding.

“Why not take a break from the hubbub of the season and pop in?”

The event is free, and takes place 6 to 8 p.m. at The Capitol Theatre, Saturday December 16th.

Give Hope Wings over the mountains of British Columbia SUBMITTED Nelson Star

In January, two former Nelson residents will take off from Kelowna Airport on a 32,000-km odyssey that will circumnavigate Central and South America.

They’ll be flying in a high performance homebuilt aircraft, raising money for Hope Air, a Canadian charity that provides more than 1,000 free medical flights per month to healthcare far from home for financially-disadvantaged Canadians.

Dave McElroy, who left Nelson 50 years ago, is commander of the two-ship formation. His father Art was proprietor of McElroy Motors, which operated in the current Nelson Chrysler premises on Baker Street.

The other adventurer, Bob Vance, now of Victoria, departed Nelson a few years earlier. He’s the son of Vern Vance, the General Manager of Kootenay Forest Products during the 1950s and 1960s.

They will be joined by two other

aviators, Russ Airey and Harold Fast, for the 60-day expedition.

They’ve dubbed the flight Give Hope Wings.

“Being aviators, we had a natural affinity for Hope Air’s mission,” says McElroy.”

He says Hope Air has provided more than 11,500 flights for Canadians in the past year and demand is growing by 15 per cent each year.

“Hope Air is the most effective and cost-efficient charity we’d ever seen,” McElroy said. “Only 12 cents of every dollar raised goes to administration. And they do all this with only nine full time employees, plus dozens of volunteers.”

He said he hopes the flight will raise both money and awareness for Hope Air, and provide a stimulating flying experience.

So the pair divided the 20,000 mile itinerary into eight segments and advertised for philanthropists to occupy the right seat of McElroy’s aircraft for each segment.

Vance was the first to sign up.

“He quickly committed a large donation to join the crew, and wholeheartedly plunged into the fundraising mission. He’s raised tens of thousands of dollars in addition to his own, and he’s truly our fourth crew member in every sense of the term.”

Vance, at age 81, says he’s had an adventurous life, and this trip will be his chance to “give back.”

So far the crew has raised just over $400,000 in total donations.

“We need to push that well above our $500,000 target in order to fund more than 2,000 medical flights,” said McElroy.

“That’s our commitment and we are determined to exceed it.”

The Nelson Junior Leafs found a cure for a mid-season stumble on Saturday night at the Nelson & District Recreation Centre with a 4-1 win over the Grand Forks Border Bruins.

The Leafs came into the game still smarting from a 9-3 thrashing at the hands of the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Friday night in Fruitvale, the team’s third loss in a row. Getting back on track on Saturday night was vital and the result keeps the Leafs atop the Neil Murdoch Division standings.

“It’s huge for us,” Leafs goaltender Josh Williams said after the Saturday win. “It was important to get back at it right away so we can see what can happen when we play our game. It worked out well tonight.”

The Leafs opened the scoring four minutes into the game when Jackson Zimmermann beat Grand Forks starter Quinn Yeager to make it 1-0. A feisty first period ended with the Leafs killing penalties for most of the last six minutes and Williams standing tall in the home side’s goal.

Just over five minutes into the second period, Leafs forward Ryan Piva picked up a loose puck and made the score 2-0.

Grand Forks pushed back and two minutes later defenceman Logan Klatt’s shot from the point managed to find its way through traffic beating Williams and cutting the lead in half.

After sitting in the penalty box watching his team kill a two-minute hooking call, Zimmermann hopped back on the ice with nine minutes remaining in the middle frame and scored on a long shot that Yeager misread to make it 3-1 for Nelson. At that point in the game, the Border Bruins held a 22-15 advantage in shots.

“Even when we were under pressure, most of the shots were coming from the outside,” said Williams, who ended up stopping 30 shots in the game to pick up his 13th win of the season. “The guys were cleaning their forwards out of the way so I could see everything. It was awesome.”

The Leafs faced further adversity late in the period when defenceman Michael LeNoury hit Border Bruins forward Brair Whyte in an exchange that would send the latter to the hospital via ambulance.

“Josh is the best goaltender in this league, bar-none,” Leafs coach Mario DiBella said after the game. “Josh does more than stop pucks, he has a great ability to move the puck, he always makes sure that dump-ins are handled and making those small plays that make a defencemen’s job a lot easier.”

Though the Leafs snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory, DiBella was not ready to let his troops off the hook for two tough losses to Castlegar and a thumping by Beaver Valley.

“It’s an issue of heading into Christmas break a little early and not understanding what it takes to consistently win in this league,” DiBella said of the stumble.

Forward Nicholas Wihak was the top player for the Leafs as he scored a pair of goals and was named the game’s second star.

The Nitehawks took advantage of undisciplined play by the Leafs to score five powerplay goals, including a pair of man-advantage markers in the first ten minutes.

The game was a feisty affair with the Leafs collecting 61 minutes in penalties, including three misconducts, while the Nitehawks were only assessed 18 penalty minutes including one 10-minute misconduct.

Intensity will be vital for the remainder of the month if the Leafs hope to hold off the redhot Castlegar Rebels who have won eight in a row.

Four out of the five remaining games this month are against division opponents including a much-anticipated tilt with the Rebels this coming Saturday night at the NDCC. The Leafs will travel to Sparwood on Friday night to take on the Fernie Ghostriders.

Paul Saso releases Kootenay Inspired at Touchstones Nelson JAKE SHERMAN Nelson Star

Paul Saso says magic brought him to Nelson, and he may very well have a book written about his own life one day.

But rather than tell his own story, for the last eight years the local environmental consultant and massage therapist has been recording and telling the life stories of the people in our community who inspire him.

“Basically I just went around asking people: who inspires you?,” said Saso, speaking to about 75 people at Touchstones Nelson on Thursday during the launch of his book, Kootenay Inspired.

“And I came up with a huge list, because there really are so many amazing people here. So I went through and asked people whether they would be interesting in chatting.

I was surprised and delighted that most of them were interested in my project.”

The book features the life stories and portraits of the late Mary Woodward, Ricardo Hubbs, Karuna Erickson, John Cooper, Tanya Wilson, Lucas Meyers, Marilyn James, Jon Meyer, Luanne Armstrong, Brian Cross, J.J. Verigin, and Mary Ann Morris.

Saso says he came up with the idea for the book because he regularly hitchhiked up to Whitewater and would meet these incredible people along the way who were open and willing to share with him.

But hitching was nothing new to the man who had recently made Nelson his home, about a decade ago.

Saso’s been hitchhiking since he was 18-yearsold. He’s hitched across

India, the world and Canada.

And he says he’s learned more doing it than he ever did in university.

He was in Yellowknife when someone finally put his education into perspective for him.

“In school I took geography, writing and psychology,” said Saso.

“It never made much sense to me until at one point this guy in Yellowknife 15 years ago said, ‘that’s so you can write about crazy people and places.’ It was always in my head, and then it just happened.”

A number of years later, after spending time exploring India, he came back to Canada with a vague notion that he would like to settle in the Kootenays.

It was the first time the Ontario native had been back in B.C. in years and he was in Vancouver when a job in his field — environmental science — opened up in Nelson.

Five days later he was here.

About a year later he came across a book called Hope and Shadows that combined images and short biographies and it occurred to him that that was a medium that he’d be able to explore the inspiring people in our community through.

He contacted photographers Louis Bockner and Kari Medig to help capture some portraits of the people who had ended up on his list of inspiring people, and the project was born.

Now eight years after contacting Bockner and Medig, and about a decade after the initial inception of the project, Saso has released his book capturing the diverse perspectives of the people who make this mountain community

so special.

He writes that it was easy because of how eclectic the community is, and the fact that no one here is ambivalent about what they do.

“I really wanted to keep a good variety, because I think that is one of the things that is important about the Kootenays and interests me,” said Saso.

“There are a really diverse set of people and perspectives. And I think the work is representative of the Kootenays and a neat way to show people what life here is about through learning about our stories.”

And those diverse perspectives have been captured skillfully by photographers Louis Bockner and Kari Medig.

Saso said Bockner has a really great way of connecting with people in a short amount of time and

that the portraits are reflective of that.

Bockner said that the experience was nothing short of amazing and he’s become good friends with some of his subjects, who he had not known before.

“Paul’s incredible. This has been eight years in the making and he did it all by himself. So to finish something like this is pretty amazing. Lots of people start these kind of projects, not everyone finishes them.”

Kootenay Inspired can be purchased for $25 from Saso, at Otter books, the Enlightened Coconut, and Leaf Cross Health Society.

50 per cent of the proceeds will be donated to Wildsight’s environmental education program for kids and Tipi Camp’s Wilderness Immersion for Self-Esteem program.

Breakfast gives big boost to Nelson kids $1,000 and 800 toys, books collected SUBMITTED Nelson Star

Early risers raised more than $1,000 and donated at least 800 new toys and books for Nelson kids in need.

The first annual Adventure Hotel and White LeBlanc Wealth Planners Christmas Toy Drive Breakfast, held on November 26, drew more than 400 people to a free community breakfast.

Everyone who attended donated a toy, children’s book or made a cash donation.

“We were overwhelmed by the support. It’s so nice to see such an amazing community like Nelson come together to help support such a good cause,” said LeBlanc partner Colin White.

The toys go to the Salvation Army Christmas Hampers, the children’s books will be donated to the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and the cash donations will go to the Nelson Food Cupboard.

The Christmas spirit was in full giving mode at the Adventure Hotel and White LeBlanc Wealth Planners Christmas Toy Drive Breakfast.

Vous êtes nombreux à vous exprimer sur ces changements et c’est d’une voix commune avec celle du conseil d’administration que je vous écris aujourd’hui.

Voilà maintenant presqu’un an et demi que je préside l’association. Lors de mon arrivée, l’AFKO avait le vent dans les voiles. Elle rêvait de nouveaux locaux, d’une garderie, de créer un centre communautaire francophone réunissant les bureaux de l’association, une garderie et l’école francophone.

Notre dynamisme était, et est toujours malgré les transformations, reconnu par nos pairs francophones de la province.

Nous créons des projets culturels innovants riches en patrimoine et nous créons des liens forts avec plusieurs réseaux dans la communauté des Kootenay Ouest. Nous sommes heureux de vous compter dans notre réseau et c’est pourquoi il est nécessaire pour nous aujourd’hui d’apporter des précisions sur les changements d’horaire de l’association et sur le plan des ressources humaines et du bénévolat.

Nous vivons une restructuration entamée il y a plus d’un an et nous avons, après analyse de leur part, reçu le support du Columbia Bassin Trust pour embaucher un conseiller francophone qui pourra nous aider à répondre aux besoins pendant ce remodelage. Cet octroi de fonds a ralenti notre processus de réorganisation mais s’avérera bénéfique. Ce réaménagement vise à augmenter le nombre d’employés permanents de l’association, à leur offrir de bonnes conditions de travail et à mener à bien le mandat de l’association. Animer l’espace public de la vie francophone, contribuer au rayonnement culturel et favoriser la médiation culturelle sont pour nous des cibles importantes.

Nous avons perdu des fonds précieux pour l’embauche de personnel. Depuis septembre, les portes de l’association sont fermées de 10h à midi. Fermer pour mieux rouvrir? Là est le

Michèlle-Ange avait six ans. Elle était la fille d’un riche marchand. Jean était le fils d’un pauvre chômeur. Ce jour-là, Michèlle-Ange faisait le tour des grands magasins avec ses parents afin de compléter une liste d’étrennes de Noël. Le chauffeur de la Cadillac des Desmarais avait emprunté une ruelle dans le but d’éviter un embouteillage sur la rue principale. Assis sur la première marche de l’escalier devant une mansarde délabrée, un garçonnet à peu près du même âge que la fillette tenait dans sa main une tasse en métal qu’il faisait sautiller au

passage des gens. Jean quêtait des sous.

L’image du jeune mendiant s’est fixée dans la tête de Michèlle-Ange. Elle a même remarqué le nom et le numéro de la ruelle où il vivait.

Dans un magasin chic de la ville. La fillette avait choisi un cadeau très spécial qu’elle serrait dans ses bras. « C’est pour qui ce cadeau ? » demanda sa maman. « Ha ! Ça, c’est un secret », répondit-elle.

La maman de la fillette n’insista pas, mais elle était curieuse.

La veille de Noël arriva. Michèlle-Ange

demanda à son papa s’il voudrait bien la conduire en ville. Son papa était ébahi.

Il ne comprenait plus rien. Comme sa fille insistait, il a cru bon de ne pas poser de questions. Michèlle-Ange le conduisit à l’adresse qui était restée collée dans sa tête. Une fois-là, elle alla déposer son étrenne dans le tambour de la mansarde. Elle regagna la Cadillac à la course. « Allons-y papa ! » Monsieur Desmarais avait tout de suite deviné le beau geste que venait de poser sa fille. Il se pencha vers elle et lui donna un tendre baiser en disant : « Joyeux Noël ! »

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of a beautiful soul. Lorraine passed away peacefully with her family by her side Dec. 3, 2017 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Throughout her illness, she always maintained her unforgettable laugh and sense of humor.

Lorraine enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and was happiest surrounded by family. Countless meals and gatherings were shared at her home.

Family, or not, you were treated as her own. She loved spending time outdoors gardening, bird watching, camping and especially drinking her morning cup of coffee!

Lorraine will be lovingly remembered by her son Garth (Denise) Allen, daughters Dee (Lorne) Spate and Debbie (Ron) McCartney; grandchildren Courtney Allen, Krista Krahn (Spate), Kris Spate and Ainsley McCartney; great grandchildren Noah and Lincoln Krahn; siblings Del (Bettie) Feller, Shannon (Gerry) Hill, Murray (Beth) Feller, Chris (Bill) Funk, Theresa (Bruce) Ward and Linda (Gary) Pringle as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Lorraine was predeceased by her loving husband George, her parents Lois and Helmut Feller and brother Levi Feller.

Kate Bridger started creating art 30 years ago in Northern Ontario because she says there was nothing else to do in the winter. Three decades later the award-winning local fabric artist is selling her art to clients in locales as distant as Paris and Los Angeles.

“One went off to Paris recently, another went to California,” said Bridger.

“They go all over the place. It’s really nice.”

Bridger just opened an exhibit at the Nelson Library showcasing her work for the month of December. As a fabric artist she says it took a really long time to receive recognition.

“It’s taken a while to be accepted because this medium is not one that people are familiar with,” said Bridger, speaking to the Star at the Nelson Public Library.

“And certainly when I

started 30 years ago I was denied entry to all the art shows and clubs because I wasn’t painting.”

That feeling of rejection led her to experiment with the subjects of traditional painters, and to portray landscapes, streetscapes, wildlife, and abstracts, within her own medium.

And though her career as an artist has involved having to constantly prove that she belonged in the room, Bridger says now that she has a reputation firmly developed as an artist here in Nelson people have become interested in her practice.

“People know what I do and its accepted, and what they generally like to say is — ‘oh it looks like a painting’ — and then they’re comfortable,” she said.

“I think people tend to be just not sure that it is an acceptable art form.”

And though her work requires a great deal of attention to detail from

both the artist and the viewer, Bridger says her medium isn’t about making some kind of profound statement.

“I am not saying anything with my work.

I simply am not,” said Bridger.

“I am capturing an image that I think is interesting and then seeing if I can make it work. I enjoy the process, and most of the time I enjoy the result.”

Bridger also teaches workshops around the West Kootenay.

She says that she had a fabulous turnout recently across the lake in Boswell, and that teaching reminds her that working with fabric is not something that is as intuitive to everyone as it is to her.

Bridger’s work has been exhibited at Touchstones in the gift shop for the last two years, and can be viewed there as well as at the Nelson Public Library until December 31.
